Jennifer Ehle and her alter-accents

People talk about Madonna and others, but J. Ehle is the freakiest.

She lived in London for years and had a very healthy career there and had a very nice local accent, as you can hear from the following clip.

Then she moved back to the USA, where she was born and where she partly grew up, and her accent seemed to change at some over night. Not slightly, but TOTALLY, as you will see from the second clip @ R1.

It's freaky.

Wow, huge difference. I suspect the English one was the most fake. According to Wikipedia, "She was raised largely in Asheville, North Carolina."

by Anonymousreply 2July 12, 2018 12:44 AM

I like her Mom.

[quote]I suspect the English one was the most fake.

It doesn't sound fake, it's terrific.

by Anonymousreply 4July 12, 2018 12:45 AM

How ridiculous to have more than one accent.

by Anonymousreply 5July 12, 2018 12:48 AM

Angela Lansbury uses the same accent all the time in real life.

by Anonymousreply 6July 12, 2018 12:49 AM

Maybe she spoke with a Brit accent because she was doing a British play and she’s a method actress.

by Anonymousreply 7July 12, 2018 12:50 AM

She’s a brilliant actress.

by Anonymousreply 8July 12, 2018 12:51 AM

[quote]Maybe she spoke with a Brit accent because she was doing a British play and she’s a method actress.

She spoke with the English accent for years in England and in interviews.

by Anonymousreply 9July 12, 2018 12:52 AM

She lived in NC with her British father and American father until she went to drama school in London.

by Anonymousreply 10July 12, 2018 12:54 AM

She may be wanting to get more American work now so she is speaking with the American accent.

by Anonymousreply 11July 12, 2018 12:54 AM

Rosie confronted her about her accent. She was still using the British one here >

Watching her definitive Pride and Prejudice I assumed she was a British actress. Many Brits can do American accents but rarely can an American convincingly do British.

Of course Gregory Peck came close.

Gillian Anderson is binational and she switches between English and American depending where she is. Her English cadence or inflection seems heavily affected by American English, though.

Longer Gillian-as-Brit clip.

Gillian Anderson and Kim Cattrall are the same.

Anne Bancroft did an excellent British accent.

Yes.

Ehle's is the most extreme because it sounds so totally natural. In fact her American sounds a little peculiar.

by Anonymousreply 18July 12, 2018 1:06 AM

Ehle’s American accent sounds like Sharon Stone.

by Anonymousreply 19July 12, 2018 1:10 AM

Meryl Streep can do a convincing British accent.

by Anonymousreply 20July 12, 2018 1:11 AM

Careful, R20, the people here will eviscerate you for saying a kind word about Meryl Streep.

by Anonymousreply 21July 12, 2018 1:11 AM

[quote]Meryl Streep can do a convincing British accent.

It's hit and miss, quite frankly.

Ehle's knocks her out of the ball park.

by Anonymousreply 22July 12, 2018 1:18 AM

She's very talented and has aged very well.

by Anonymousreply 23July 12, 2018 1:21 AM

I'm from London. When I was at acting school in NYC I used to teach people how to talk with an English accent. We used to exchange skills. Where Americans go wrong is they sound silly and jumpy when they do the English accent....all that "pip.pip" nonsense. Where the hell does that come from? I used to say - SOUND BORED, even if you're excited.

by Anonymousreply 24July 12, 2018 1:25 AM

And here she is winning 7 years later with a different accent.

My mom was from Germany, from Bavaria to be specific. She moved a little northward to study cooking, and developed a Schwabian accent. Mainly because the two dialects are so different, it is hard to understand each other. Bavarians sound TOTALLY different than Schwabians do. My dad was Schwabian. He spoke German with that accent.

When mom would have a phone call with someone from Bavaria, or if we had visiting company from Bavaria, she totally lapsed back into her Bavarian dialect. But as soon as a Schwab came around and the dialect was getting thrown about, she was just as comfortable going back to that

I don't see this as an affectation or putting on airs. It is simply expedient and comfortable.

[quote]I don't see this as an affectation or putting on airs. It is simply expedient and comfortable.

You're not one to judge, you're clearly extremely affected yourself, Miss Mary.

by Anonymousreply 27July 12, 2018 1:34 AM

I always wonder with these people "Which accent do they THINK in?"

by Anonymousreply 28July 12, 2018 1:38 AM

thyhrty

[quote]I don't see this as an affectation or putting on airs.

No one said it was.

[quote]It is simply expedient and comfortable.

Oh, crap!

by Anonymousreply 30July 12, 2018 1:43 AM

Why isn't Ehle working in higher profile projects? She is a brilliant actress and there's always been something so warm and engaging about her.

by Anonymousreply 31July 12, 2018 1:48 AM

I completely agree, R31. I wish she was in more stuff.

by Anonymousreply 32July 12, 2018 1:50 AM

She should go back to England. She did her best stuff there.

Here she is doing a posh 1940s English accent. Even the English cunts don't bother doing period accents these days.

Not when she does the American accent. It's rather alarming.

by Anonymousreply 34July 12, 2018 1:55 AM

r33, what is that from?

by Anonymousreply 35July 12, 2018 1:57 AM

Her American accent is FAR from cozy.

It's from Camomile Lawn. Nick-named Camomile Porn because everyone kept takng their clothes off. Ehle's tits caused quite a storm.

She did a guest role on The Blacklist opposite James Spader a couple of years ago, and was amazing. I haven't seen her in anything since but confess I haven't sought her out so I probably missed several engaging performances.

She's lovely in that little Brit film called Bedrooms and Hallways as the fag hag friend of Kevin McKidd and his bf James Purefoy.

Who are the actors at r39? Was it a gay storyline?

by Anonymousreply 43July 12, 2018 2:13 AM

Obviously Camomile Lawn didn't get a release in the USA for some reason.

No, R43, they're twin brothers sharing HER. Sorry.

Toby Stephens showed his peen, several time, I seem to remember, but I can't find a pic.

by Anonymousreply 44July 12, 2018 2:20 AM

Jennifer had a very nice body. It's weird to think Hollywood would consider her obese.

by Anonymousreply 45July 12, 2018 2:31 AM

Was the film called Contagion? I loved seeing her outshine all those movie stars in it.

by Anonymousreply 46July 12, 2018 2:42 AM

She was really great in that.

by Anonymousreply 47July 12, 2018 1:20 PM

Seriously, complaining because actors are good at accents?

by Anonymousreply 48July 12, 2018 2:44 PM

This is the kind of shit gays should be discussing, not "the T."

by Anonymousreply 49July 12, 2018 2:46 PM

[quote]Seriously, complaining because actors are good at accents?

You have comprehension issues. Clearly.

by Anonymousreply 50July 12, 2018 2:51 PM

Quite possibly, r50. I only read the OP. What did I miss?

by Anonymousreply 51July 12, 2018 2:53 PM

R51, it’s that she is suffering from Anderson/Barrowman syndrome. Takes on a different accent depending on where she is.

by Anonymousreply 52July 12, 2018 5:25 PM

You like us best when we're docile huh, R49.

by Anonymousreply 53July 12, 2018 5:36 PM

Love her. When I saw ZERO DARK THIRTY, I was much more engaged with her character than the one played by the overrated Jessica Chastain. But then Ehle is a far better actress.

by Anonymousreply 54July 12, 2018 6:35 PM

Plus, Ehle is an excellent stage actress most of the time (she did a bad revival of DESIGN FOR LIVING at the Roundabout and wasn't good, but the two men weren't either).

After the horrific revival of THE HEIRESS, Chastain should retire from the theater for good. She was dreadful.

by Anonymousreply 55July 12, 2018 6:40 PM

No, r53. Interesting.

by Anonymousreply 56July 12, 2018 9:05 PM

I don't generally prefer English accents to American - but HER English accent is warm and sweet and her American accent is hard and horrible.

by Anonymousreply 57July 12, 2018 9:11 PM

Loved her in Pride and Prejudice. Thought she was English at the time. She goes for understated parts in good movies.

by Anonymousreply 58July 12, 2018 9:22 PM

In Pride and Prejudice, her tits looked like inflating and deflating ballons as she inhaled and exhaled. Downright bizarre.
