Jennifer Ehle and her alter-accents
People talk about Madonna and others, but J. Ehle is the freakiest.
She lived in London for years and had a very healthy career there and had a very nice local accent, as you can hear from the following clip.
Then she moved back to the USA, where she was born and where she partly grew up, and her accent seemed to change at some over night. Not slightly, but TOTALLY, as you will see from the second clip @ R1.
It's freaky.

Wow, huge difference. I suspect the English one was the most fake. According to Wikipedia, "She was raised largely in Asheville, North Carolina."

How ridiculous to have more than one accent.

Angela Lansbury uses the same accent all the time in real life.

Maybe she spoke with a Brit accent because she was doing a British play and she’s a method actress.

She’s a brilliant actress.

She spoke with the English accent for years in England and in interviews.

She lived in NC with her British father and American father until she went to drama school in London.

She may be wanting to get more American work now so she is speaking with the American accent.

Rosie confronted her about her accent. She was still using the British one here >

Watching her definitive Pride and Prejudice I assumed she was a British actress. Many Brits can do American accents but rarely can an American convincingly do British.
Of course Gregory Peck came close.

Gillian Anderson is binational and she switches between English and American depending where she is. Her English cadence or inflection seems heavily affected by American English, though.

Anne Bancroft did an excellent British accent.

Yes.
Ehle's is the most extreme because it sounds so totally natural. In fact her American sounds a little peculiar.

Ehle’s American accent sounds like Sharon Stone.

I'm from London. When I was at acting school in NYC I used to teach people how to talk with an English accent. We used to exchange skills. Where Americans go wrong is they sound silly and jumpy when they do the English accent....all that "pip.pip" nonsense. Where the hell does that come from? I used to say - SOUND BORED, even if you're excited.

And here she is winning 7 years later with a different accent.

My mom was from Germany, from Bavaria to be specific. She moved a little northward to study cooking, and developed a Schwabian accent. Mainly because the two dialects are so different, it is hard to understand each other. Bavarians sound TOTALLY different than Schwabians do. My dad was Schwabian. He spoke German with that accent.
When mom would have a phone call with someone from Bavaria, or if we had visiting company from Bavaria, she totally lapsed back into her Bavarian dialect. But as soon as a Schwab came around and the dialect was getting thrown about, she was just as comfortable going back to that
I don't see this as an affectation or putting on airs. It is simply expedient and comfortable.

Why isn't Ehle working in higher profile projects? She is a brilliant actress and there's always been something so warm and engaging about her.

She should go back to England. She did her best stuff there.
Here she is doing a posh 1940s English accent. Even the English cunts don't bother doing period accents these days.

It's from Camomile Lawn. Nick-named Camomile Porn because everyone kept takng their clothes off. Ehle's tits caused quite a storm.

She did a guest role on The Blacklist opposite James Spader a couple of years ago, and was amazing. I haven't seen her in anything since but confess I haven't sought her out so I probably missed several engaging performances.

Love her. When I saw ZERO DARK THIRTY, I was much more engaged with her character than the one played by the overrated Jessica Chastain. But then Ehle is a far better actress.

Plus, Ehle is an excellent stage actress most of the time (she did a bad revival of DESIGN FOR LIVING at the Roundabout and wasn't good, but the two men weren't either).
After the horrific revival of THE HEIRESS, Chastain should retire from the theater for good. She was dreadful.

I don't generally prefer English accents to American - but HER English accent is warm and sweet and her American accent is hard and horrible.
