I've tried vitamin c serum, and hydroquinone, they lightened a bit, but not much. I use sunblock and avoid the sun religiously. What to do?
DL skin experts, what can be done to get rid of age spots and freckles?

see a dermatologist

Where do you think I got the hydroquinone from r1?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 6, 2018 8:31 AM |
Hydroquinone will only lighten dark spots, not get rid of them. Depending on your age, skin type and location of the spots, you can try one or more chemical peels.

I recommend a Benozyl Peroxide lotion or gel. You will need to build up tolerance very gradually and wear a lot of SPF every single day. Expect redness and peeling until tolerance is developed.

Also look at Korean and Japanese skincare. All do whitening lines, they are the experts in that field really. Korean brand La Neige is quite affordable. Buy a 'White Dew' trial sizes set on amazon and see how you like it.

Laser removed of age spots - worked well for me ...
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 6, 2018 8:45 AM |
What type of laser r6?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 6, 2018 8:48 AM |
I have the opposite problem, instead of dark age spots I have white spots. Some people call them liver spots but they have nothing to actually do with that. Probably from sun damage, I cant find anything on the google that says they can be treated. Anyone else have this problem? Just on the arms for some reason.

Stay inside if you want to be a Nifty 65 year old who looks 29 😂
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 6, 2018 8:59 AM |
R8 I have them on my arms and legs. Sometimes called sun mushrooms, they are due to a combo of sun damage and age. According to a couple of dermatologists, nothing you can do about them, something to do with absence of pigmentation. Slather on sunscreen as prevention.

It also has the possibility of being vitiligo, R8.
Mine really shows up when I’m near a blue light scanner, like the ones the use to check counterfeit bills.

The white spots are not Viteligo, that usually takes over in large patches. In my case, I used to have several salt water fish tanks. I had to stick my hands and arms in there every day to clean up after feeding. The lights for the corals is VERY UV intense. Its what they require to thrive. It never occurred to me that a few minutes each day would do so much damage. I suspect that's where it came from.

I have a few of those white spots and I avoid the sun like it's the plague and use zinc sunblock religiously. They're on places that are always covered by clothes too.

Sunblock can cause cancer though.

Tell the derm you want IPL, that will erase everything. If you don't scrupulously use SPF, spots do return in a few years as their imprint is deep in your skin now, so behave afterwards and you will be great for decades. you will need a few hundred or thousand dollars, insurance does not cover laser.

TCA peels, you can buy various strengths on line. 10% is mild, refreshes the skin. Over 20%, it will seriously take off age spots, your face will peel after three days. Plan on hiding out for 5 days. Since its self administered, it's easy to mess up and do real damage so read up/watch YouTube videos beforehand. Other peels like glycolic & lactic, are for younger skin maintenance. They don't do anything for freckles or age spots.

Not zinc and titanium sunblock r15.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 6, 2018 5:16 PM |
My insurance paid for laser at the dermie. Reason is some brown spots can turn cancerous, or so he said.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 6, 2018 5:31 PM |
Not to be too Debbie Downer, r19, but the zinc and titanium particles in those sunblocks are nanoparticles. They penetrate the skin surface and are suspected carcinogens.
The only safe alternative is the actual white or colored opaque zinc block, but obviously no one's going to wear that stuff.

I read once that ginger and plain yogurt would do it. They didn't say if it was ground, grated or what but I'd try ground first

I’m 64, and except for my age spots, I look late 30s

"zinc and titanium particles in those sunblocks are nanoparticles. They penetrate the skin surface"
This is a disproved myth r21.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 6, 2018 6:55 PM |
First of all, don't listen to the person saying sunscreen causes cancer. Wear spf30 every single day.
At night, put on a cream or serum with glycolic acid. I like the gly-luronic serum from Makeup Artists' Choice

[quote] What type of laser
my dermatologists used two different lasers: one for for brown age spots on my hands and face. And another for red spots on my face. Most of the brown spots went away. A couple of stubborn one had to be zapped twice. The red spots also went away for the most part. I had two 20/minute treatments. I think I was charged $135 treatment. It was wonderful to see my hands without the brown spots. They look years younger.

Laser is probably your best bet. I started growing tufts of hair on my shoulders and my sister dragged me to a laser hair removal place to laser that shit off. It killed the hair and also zapped some brown spots I had on my shoulders.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | July 7, 2018 6:21 PM |
My derma guy removed brown spots on my hands and back by spraying on a freezing liquid. They fell off in a day or two.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 7, 2018 6:27 PM |
But if you just laser spots, doesn't your skin look uneven afterwards? Does it leave lighter spots?

R30 I believe iirc that I've heard they can help, but there is no cure for rosacea.

I have melesma on a bit of each cheek. Hate it. I keep out of the sun, I’ve done a couple of at home peels but it hasn’t made much difference. 😫
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 10, 2018 3:51 PM |
I have vitiligo. It started out as tiny white spots on my skin that spread over time. I certainly didn't wake up one day with large white areas of skin around. It's an autoimmune condition. No one else in my family has vitiligo, but I have autoimmune thyroid disease. If you have one autoimmune disease, you're susceptible to having more autoimmune problems like vitiligo.

R34, I've had some melasma and spots for year and tried all sorts of high end products, peels from MUAC, etc and had very little to show for it. Just had my second round of IPL, and I'm so mad at myself for waiting so long and spending so much money on products that didn't work. There's a huge improvement already.
