Is Addams Family Values the best movie sequel ever?

Brilliant, Oscar-worthy performances by Christina Ricci and Joan Cusack, great script and very funny scenes. I prefer it to the first film.

This scene is my favourite.

by Anonymousreply 1July 6, 2018 5:25 AM

A holiday favorite!

by Anonymousreply 2July 6, 2018 5:27 AM

I love it when Wednesday decries the script as lacking in the Aristotelian unities.

Watch it at least once a year ! "My name is Fester,it means to rot"

Mannequin 2>>>>>>>

But Debbie ... [italic]pastels?[/italic]

by Anonymousreply 6July 6, 2018 5:31 AM

No.

Batman Returns

Godfather 2

Aliens

All are infinitely better films.

by Anonymousreply 7July 6, 2018 5:47 AM

Terminator 2

by Anonymousreply 8July 6, 2018 7:05 AM

Yes, it is.

by Anonymousreply 9July 6, 2018 7:20 AM

They got my MAILIBUUUUUUUUUUUUUU Barbie. It wasn't who I was. They had to go.

by Anonymousreply 10July 6, 2018 7:38 AM

Oscar worthy.... OP No wonder you think AF2 is the best sequel. You wouldn't know good script and performance if they came up and gave you a surprise anal. Each.

Why don't you just say you liked it.

by Anonymousreply 11July 6, 2018 7:50 AM

Should have been nominated and won for Best Picture.

[italic] Schindler's List [/italic] was a little bit of a downer if you ask me!

by Anonymousreply 12July 6, 2018 7:55 AM

Schindler's List would have been better if they used more pastels.

by Anonymousreply 13July 6, 2018 7:56 AM

I thought it was good but the best ever? I don't know.

by Anonymousreply 14July 6, 2018 7:58 AM

Schindler's List is all done with trick photography and fast cuts, like Chicago. And it's drab. Was there a sequel?

by Anonymousreply 15July 6, 2018 7:59 AM

It is the rare sequel that is better than the original. (see discussion of this in Scream 2)

Godfather 2, Aliens (debatable) are the others usually mentioned.

by Anonymousreply 16July 6, 2018 7:59 AM

Aliens was not better than Alien.

by Anonymousreply 17July 6, 2018 8:00 AM

Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo

by Anonymousreply 18July 6, 2018 8:07 AM

It was pretty good, but it was lopsidedly Wednesday-heavy. And the writing for her was sort of funny, but not that great.

After the third or fourth obvious "set up / punchline" it became so predictable that she stopped being funny.

by Anonymousreply 19July 6, 2018 8:14 AM

Lesbos II: The Ovum's Return

by Anonymousreply 20July 6, 2018 8:15 AM

^^^ which is not to say I don't still enjoy it, but the first one's still better.

by Anonymousreply 21July 6, 2018 8:16 AM

I agree, Lesbos: the Quivering was better.

by Anonymousreply 22July 6, 2018 8:19 AM

Dumb and Dumber was better than the original Dumb and Dumb.

by Anonymousreply 23July 6, 2018 8:29 AM

[quote] Is Addams Family Values the best movie sequel ever?

I don't know about this. The [italic] Nutty Professor 2 [/italic] is a historic and cultural landmark. It was just entered into the National Film Registry.

I think Aliens was one of the best movie sequels, but Alien was still better. Maybe not one of the best, but X2 was way better than X-men.

by Anonymousreply 25July 6, 2018 1:23 PM

Agreed about Aliens. I think that and Terminator 2 are probably the best sequels ever made.

by Anonymousreply 26July 6, 2018 1:30 PM

I had the biggest crush on Christina Ricci as a little dyke, first of all in AFV and later on in CASPER and also NOW AND THEN. She was so smart and soft and together then, like a tough but sweet femme dream.

I wanted to be Kat’s girlfriend in CASPER so damn badly. Fuck Devon Sawa and his lips.

It is. I love this movie. Everyone in the movie has great lines. Excellent writing.

by Anonymousreply 28July 6, 2018 3:27 PM

I love Debbie. Best villain death scene. And her multiple attempts to off Fester, and her practicing her crying in the car. "But officer! My husband was in that house!"

by Anonymousreply 29July 6, 2018 3:31 PM

That is a *QUEEN* *ANNE* *CHANDELIER*!!!!!! Great sequel. So many quotable lines. I’d probably rank it second best sequel after Superman II.

by Anonymousreply 30July 6, 2018 3:38 PM

Love that movie; Joan Cusack is brilliant but everyone is great.

by Anonymousreply 31July 6, 2018 3:43 PM

I loved wednesday messing with those teenage frau bitches at camp.

by Anonymousreply 32July 6, 2018 3:44 PM

I'm just like any modern woman trying to have it all—a loving husband, a family ... I just wish I had more time to seek out the dark forces and join their hellish crusade.

by Anonymousreply 33July 6, 2018 3:47 PM

MIss Debbieeeeee

by Anonymousreply 35July 6, 2018 4:05 PM

R13, true horror comes in color.

by Anonymousreply 36July 6, 2018 4:08 PM

My favorite line is when Gomez tells Fester, "You ... are ... MISTER DEBBIE!"

It's a rare sequel that's better than the first. I've only seen the original once and didn't care for it, but this one...this one's hysterically funny. Joan Cusack should have been nominated for something for her performance.

by Anonymousreply 41July 6, 2018 6:38 PM

"The Bride of Frankenstein" is the best movie sequel ever. It surpasses the original.

by Anonymousreply 42July 6, 2018 6:43 PM

"We love playing with the baby."

"Especially his head."

by Anonymousreply 43July 7, 2018 12:03 AM

Deb about Gomez: Isn't he a lady killer.

Gomez: Acquitted.

by Anonymousreply 45July 7, 2018 1:39 AM

In addition to the sequels mentioned - and I agree Aliens is better than Alien - there are these two from Sam Raimi:

Evil Dead II and Spiderman 2

by Anonymousreply 46July 7, 2018 1:44 AM

The producers of the Broadway musical should have just paid up and used the screenplay as the foundation for the show.,it would have been a hit.

by Anonymousreply 47July 7, 2018 1:49 AM

It is a very funny movie and the performances are universally great. Also a fan of Aliens. Of course, everyone slobbers all over Godfather II but I would watch either of these other two over it any time.

by Anonymousreply 48July 7, 2018 1:55 AM

OP is wrong (Godfather Part II, Empire Strikes Back, Before Sunset, etc.), but “Addams Family Values” is probably the best sequel to a comedy.

Then again, comedy sequels are usually so dire that “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me” counts as one of the better ones.

by Anonymousreply 49July 7, 2018 2:02 AM

LOVE that movie. Love it to DEATH.

by Anonymousreply 50July 7, 2018 2:07 AM

The Broadway musical was so awful. It had Morticia fearing aging. Morticia would love to age and rot and have her body get closer to death.

by Anonymousreply 51July 7, 2018 3:04 AM

I found the first Addams Family movie very endearing for its knowledge of the original New Yorker cartoons, well-acted and visually superb, but the sequel is a laugh riot from beginning to end and there is simply not a dud performance or line in the whole thing. From what I have heard, Debbie was supposed to have been revealed in the final joke as a drag queen, but the producers felt that would be a step too far.

Aliens is an amazing film, but not better than Alien - for the simple reason that they are completely different takes on the genre. Alien is a horror film, Aliens is an action film. Both are masterpieces of their type.

by Anonymousreply 52July 7, 2018 3:19 AM

Yes. The sequel was better than the first.

by Anonymousreply 53July 7, 2018 3:19 AM

Joan Cusack's monologue at the end better be in her lifetime achievement award reel one day.

It's definitely one of the few sequels that's better than the original. Raul Julia's scene at the police station, Angelica Houston's "Pastels?", and pretty much every scene with Debbie or the kids are all so iconic. I don't think there's any scenes from the first movie that are as memorable.

by Anonymousreply 54July 7, 2018 3:30 AM

R54, there were many very funny scenes and the role of Dr. Pinder-Schloss, as well as the wonderful ballroom scene at the family dance. But I agree that "Values" was funnier on a line by line basis

by Anonymousreply 55July 7, 2018 3:35 AM

"I'll be the victim! I'll be the victim!"

"All your life."

by Anonymousreply 56July 7, 2018 3:40 AM

R54 I remember nothing from the first movie

by Anonymousreply 57July 7, 2018 3:57 AM

R56, the girl who said the victim line grew became Harmony from “Buffy” and “Angel.” So it turned out to be her life and her afterlife.

by Anonymousreply 58July 7, 2018 4:28 AM

R58, I should have realized that before! She looked just like she did as a little girl but I never put the two things together.

by Anonymousreply 59July 7, 2018 4:29 AM

I am a turkey. Eat me.

by Anonymousreply 60July 7, 2018 4:31 AM

While looking at baby Pubert:

Gomez: He has my father's eyes!

Morticia: Gomez, take those out of his mouth.

by Anonymousreply 61July 7, 2018 4:52 AM

I watched it over Halloween. It's even funnier to watch as an adult than as a kid. Definitely an improvement on its predecessor. The only misstep in the casting is Pugsley, but in fairness, he isn't actually given much to do (possibly because Wednesday is such a great character).

Anyway, how do you interpret the hand that shoots up from the grave at the end? Has Debbie been resurrected, even though she was reduced to ash? Or is another member of the family helping Wednesday play a prank on Joel? It can't be Thing because it has a forearm.
