Back in the Born in the USA days, there were plenty of rumors he was gay. Those rumors seem to disappear after the Julianne Philips/ Patty Scialfa saga unfolded.

by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 6, 2018 1:55 AM |
He's only gay or bi on DL. In reality, he's straight with a strong fetish for red-headed women.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 6, 2018 1:58 AM |
I was bruised and battered, I couldn't tell what I felt. I was unrecognizable to myself.
Saw my reflection in a window and didn't know my own face.
Oh brother are you gonna leave me wastin' away On the streets of Philadelphia?
I walked the avenue, 'til my legs felt like stone, I heard the voices of friends, vanished and gone.
At night I could hear the blood in my veins, It was just as black and whispering as the rain, On the streets of Philadelphia.
Ain't no angel gonna greet me. It's just you and I my friend. And my clothes don't fit me no more, I walked A thousand miles Just to slip this skin.
Night has fallen, I'm lyin' awake, I can feel myself fading away, So receive me brother with your faithless kiss, Or will we leave each other alone like this On the streets of Philadelphia?

Wasn’t he thrown out of the house by his father? So he most likely was a male hustler at that time. I don’t think he ever worked a job outside of being a musician, and most likely hustling.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 6, 2018 2:02 AM |
A lot of people here who want every celebrity to be straight uses that tired old "only gay on DL" nonsense. I don't know if Bruce is Bisexual, but as I said at R7, there's been rumors about him for years.

The born-again twats tried to make hay with the "Springsteen is gay" stuff by sniggering and giggling over that very famous photo of Springsteen onstage, leaning back on his knees and kissing Clarence Clemmons on the mouth.

by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 6, 2018 2:09 AM |
I hold you in my arms
As the band plays
What are those words whispered baby
Just as you turn away
I saw you last night
Out on the edge of town
I want to read your mind
To know just what I've got in this new thing
I've found
So tell me what I see
When I look in your eyes
Is that you baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
I heard somebody call your name
From underneath our willow
I saw something tucked in shame
Underneath your pillow
Well I've tried so hard baby
But I just can't see
What a woman like you
Is doing with me
So tell me who I see
When I look in your eyes
Is that you baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
Now look at me baby
Struggling to do everything right
And then it all falls apart
When out go the lights
I'm just a lonely pilgrim
I walk this world in wealth
I want to know if it's you I don't trust
'Cause I damn sure don't trust myself
Now you play the loving woman
I'll play the faithful man
But just don't look too close
Into the palm of my hand
We stood at the alter
The gypsy swore our future was right
But come the wee wee hours
Well maybe baby the gypsy lied
So when you look at me
You better look hard and look twice
Is that me baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
Tonight our bed is cold
Lost in the darkness of our love
God have mercy on the man
Who doubts what he's sure of

It still amazes a few of Springsteen’s band members that he never held a job. He was always able to get by playing in the Jersey bars. I read an autobiography of Bruce. He had his share of the ladies in the beginning of his career.

No idea when his career started or how old he was at the time, but he frequently played at this small pillhead bar in Asbury Park, NJ; that was back in 82/83. Saw him play there many times; also his drummer, Max Weinberger, played at the college I attended; William Patterson University. The bar is called the stone pony; no idea if anyone from that age/area ever heard of it. Bon Jovi also played there.

by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 6, 2018 2:33 AM |
He wasn't thrown out by his father. His father and mother moved to CA. Bruce chose to stay behind in NJ, living in his parents' house because he had just started a band and was playing gigs in the NYC area.
I've never imagined him to be anything but straight, but he's always been gay friendly and then vocally pro gay-rights. He's talked a lot about feeling like an outcast growing up and how much he appreciated the acceptance he found in the clubs and bars of Asbury Park, including the gay bars, and how he drew inspiration from them.
GROSS: And the - you know, Madame Marie and all of the - like, all of the boardwalk regulars. You made great stories out of those characters, great songs out of those characters. But what appealed to you about knowing them and writing about them?
SPRINGSTEEN: It was just my location at the time. I didn't move to Asbury with the thought of - you know, it wasn't an anthropological...
GROSS: But you connected in some way.
SPRINGSTEEN: ...Reason. But I went, and I just fit in there. Asbury was down on its luck but not as bad as it would get. And so there was a lot of room to move. You know, clubs were open till 5:00 a.m. There were gay clubs. In even the late '60s, it was a bit of an open city. So as young ne'er-do-wells, we fit very - you know, we fit very comfortably in that picture. And then when I went to write, I just wrote about what was around me. It fired my imagination. It was - of course, was a colorful locale.

April 19, 2010. Much as Bruce Springsteen has tried to avoid being gossip fodder, his off-stage love life has grabbed many a pun-tastic headline.
With the Monmouth divorce trial in which the Boss was named as the other man coming to an end, let's take a trip through the Bruce Springsteen tunnel of love.
Karen Darvin (1975) Model Karen Darvin was on the Boss' arm in the 1970s, frequently joining him on tour.
She later had a relationship with musician Todd Rundgren.
Lynn Goldsmith (1978) Goldsmith dated Springsteen while serving as concert photographer for the 1978-1979 Darkness on the Edge of Town Tour.
Already well-established as a photographer, Goldsmith went on to publish a the book Springsteen , which featured 90 color photos from the tour.
Joyce Hyser (1981) The actress best known for her role in the 1985 cult classic Just One of the Guys dated the Boss in the early 1980s.
Dancing in the Dark (1984) Okay, so maybe nothing happened between Bruce Springsteen and Courtney Cox, but their flirtatious fun in The Boss' "Dancing in the Dark" video helped launch Cox's career.
Julianne Phillips (1984-1988) Phillips, an actress and model who hailed from the Midwest, didn't share Springsteen's working class roots, but the pair struck a love match when they met in October 1984.
They married six months later.
According to People , Phillips was supportive of Patti Scialfa's role in the E Street Band, aware that being the only woman in the group could be difficult. The marriage started to slide, however, and many of the songs in Springsteen 1987 album Tunnel of Love exploring relationship conflicts are believed to have been inspired by marital discord. Patti Scialfa (1988-present) During the Tunnel of Love tour, Scialfa took center stage with Springsteen and the chemistry between the pair didn't go unnoticed. Tabloids began reporting on the pair's relationship, and after the tour ended, Springsteen and Phillips filed for divorce.
Scialfa, with her Jersey roots and experience in the recording industry dating back to the late 1970s, seemed to have more in common with Springsteen than the younger, blonde former cheerleader from Illinois. Scialfa gave birth to the pair's son in 1990. They married in 1991 and went on to have a daughter and another son.
Affair rumors (2006, 2009) Springsteen's 19-year marriage to Scialfa hasn't been immune to tabloid rumors of infidelity. In August 2006, the New York Post reported that Springsteen was leaving Scialfa for a Sept. 11 widow he met while organizing the September 11 telethon, "America: A Tribute to Heroes." The report led Springsteen, who is reluctant about discussing his personal life, to issue a statement on his website denying the rumors: "Patti and I have been together for 18 years- the best 18 years of my life. We have built a beautiful family we love and want to protect and our commitment to one another remains as strong as the day we were married."
Springsteen's love life became a hot topic again last year when Arthur Kelly accused him of having an affair with his wife, Ann Kelly, in papers filed during the Kellys' divorce proceeding. Arthur Kelly alleged that his wife "has committed adultery with one Bruce Springsteen, who resides in Rumson, N.J., and Colts Neck, N.J., at various times and places too numerous to mention."
Springsteen declined to comment on Kelly's accusation and pointed to the 2006 statement on the strength of his marriage to Scialfa.

Asbury Park Mark Blogging about Life and Real Estate in The Best Jersey Shore Town on Planet Earth!
TUESDAY, APRIL 10, 2012 Asbury Park: A Gay History A Brief Gay History Chronology of Asbury This post is a very brief and high level overview of some of that history. For the sake of brevity, many people, stories and establishments are not included.
During WWII, British soldiers were billeted at the Berkeley Cartet Hotel on Sunset Ave. Some of those soldiers were gay, and they frequented establishments along with locals and men from New York and Philly such places as Fox's and The Plantation. The Plantation was a straight bar that was 'gay', one night a week. Both located in the area of Summerfield and Lake. At that time, Summerfield ran all the way to Lake Ave, and did not stop at Cookman.
During the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, if you were gay, Asbury Park was a place that you come to to "be yourself", It was a place were people could feel relaxed and not 'intimidated'. In the 40's and 50's, here men were able to dress casually in the bars, and not wear the suit, tie and hat that they did in the bars in New York City and Philadelphia, This is that story.
The Blue Note was one of the most popular establishments in Asbury Park during the 60's. Lines outside and down the street were not at all unusual. Originally a straight Jazz club, the owners soon made it a very successful gay bar. Located on the east side of Bangs, between Bond and Monroe, it had a piano bar and a lounge. The old police station use to be just down the street. The Blue Note was closed for 6 months in 1965-66 by the State of NJ Alchohol Beverage Control (ABC) for "catering to homosexuals". After it re-opened, the doorman was responsible for circulating through the crowd to make sure men were not touching or kissing each other.
The Owl & The Pussy Cat opened as a lesbian bar on the corner of Main and Cookman. The building where Brando's Citi Cucina restaurant is today. In 1981, it moved to The Albion Hotel on Kingsley. The Albion was a lesbian hotel with 4 bars, a restaurnt, 65 rooms, and a pool. It operated until 1989.
The Rainbow Room neon sign that hung at The Albion during it's hay day (pre-gay) now hangs at the Asbury Park transportation center.
The Colony Baths were located at 500 Summerfield or the southwest corner of Summerfield and Grand. It burned down on Halloween in 1980. Another bath house operated for 1 year in an old hotel on Kingsley.
The Loading Dock was a lounge and dance bar located on south side of Cookman Ave, between Main and Bond, in the middle of the block. The front door was on Cookman, however, many men didn't feel comfortable walking inside from such a visible location as Cookman Ave. So they walked down the alley and entered through the back door. Management and patrons, found this much more discreet.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | July 6, 2018 4:36 PM |
The Bond St. Bar was a lesbian bar on Bond St. that operated between the 70's and 80's.
Chez Elle (french for "her house"), opened around 1965 at the corner of Summerfield and Cookman. It was owned and operated by one of Asbury Park's most legendary women, Margaret Hogan. In 1967, Manny's Den, (later The Den in New Brunswick) and Val's in Atlantic City went to the State Supreme Court to challenge the states ability to to deny and/or revoke a bars liquor license for serving "apparent homosexuals". They were victorious. Court documents showed that ABC agents testified that they could identify "fruits" "by the clothes they wore". "Such as tight jeans, turtleneck sweaters, gaily printed pants, very casual shirts, sneakers, moccasins, and boots".
It was not the local police who raided bars or harassed it's patrons. Instead it was agents from the State of New Jersey Alcohol Beverage Control. In fact, locals, including the police and politicians - for years - had a live and let live attitude. Pretty much responding only to complaints of lewd or rowdy behavior.
Danny's was located across the street from Chez Elle, on the south side of Cookman Ave. Danny's was always rumored to have been mob owned. The straight owners owners also owned several bars in New York, pre-Stonewall. It was only open 1 - 2 years. Danny's had a bouncer named "Murphy". He was one of the original "Stonewall 9" from New York City.
The Moroccan Room was on the corner of Kingsley and 1st. It was a large straight club, but it had 2 rooms for 'gay dancing' and shows.
The Atlantis was a totally upscale bar and restaurant that featured performers such as Eartha Kitt. Fire destroyed the interior in the early '80's,and it re-opened as Visions, and later as Down The Street.
The Empress Hotel on Ocean Ave was built in the '50's as a family hotel, and was a favorite of Judy Garland when she would perform at The Paramount, or the Garden State Arts Center (now PNC Arts Center).
Shepp Pettibone bought the hotel in 1988 after it had been abandoned for many years, opening the dance club Paradise.

"Diane Lobito, Karen Darvin, Lynn Goldsmith, Joyce Hyser, Julianne Philips, Patti Smith, Rachel Sweet, and his, wife confirm him as a heterosexual."
Patti Smith?! Bruce NEVER fucked that bag of bones. Their only connection was "Because The Night", a rather mediocre song that became Smith's only hit single. It began as a substandard song written by Bruce; he wasn't satisfied with it an wasn't gong to finish it because he considered it a forgettable love song. Jimmy Iovine gave Smith a tape of the song, she fiddled with it and it was included on her album Easter. It was never released on any of Bruce's studio albums but he would perform it in concert using his own lyrics. And that was all that was between Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith. They were never really even friends, much less lovers.
I don't believe he did anything with pudgy Rachel Sweet, either. Doesn't seem like his type at all.

He saw Lynn Goldsmith in the audience at one of his concerts (she had as much right as anybody to be there) and for some reason he became enraged and dragged her onstage, shouting "this is my ex-girlfriend!" I wish she'd kneed him in the balls in front of all those people or clawed his face. It would have served him right. Feeling macho and triumphant he went backstage singing and strutting only to find his girlfriend Joyce Hyser being comforted by Jackson Brown. Seems she thought Bruce had said "this is my girlfriend" in reference to Goldsmith and was upset by that. Seeing Hyser in Jackson Brown's arms, The Boss bellowed "what the hell is going on here?!" Poor little man. Anyway, he behaved like an absolute asshole.

Did Lynn Goldsmith fuck all of her subjects?
by Anonymous | reply 94 | July 7, 2018 1:16 PM |
. I remember her saying things like, “…everyone in Hollywood has been so nice so far. They’ve been messengering scripts over to our suite at the Sunset Marquis,” and, “I should have invited you to come with us to that screening the other night. I could have fixed you up with Nick Nolte!”
A cat fight between her and Lynnie (as she liked to be called by close friends), was inevitable. No disappointment there; an ongoing one ensued complete with letters including pictures of voodoo dolls and raging insults went back and forth through the growing grapevine. Lynn was not a good sport about losing Bruce, and this was no secret.
Professionally, I was constantly reminded that Lynn had all of the great pictures of Bruce taken over the last few years, and everybody wanted them. Since permission was needed to print photos, we were forced to do an enormous amount of work with LGI for years to come. All of the tension between Lynn and Bruce (and the rest of us) peaked one memorable night at Madison Square Garden. Not coincidentally, Lynn would not go quietly.
Bruce was appearing for five successive nights at the Garden along with Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Petty, and lots of the biggest acts of that year, 1979, for the No Nukes Benefit Concerts. Lots of preparation was necessary for such a big event and we all worked overtime for months. Everything was well organized including the many photographers shooting the shows.

"Since Bruce’s relationship with Lynn had been over for a year and things were still unpleasant between them, we decided it was best to politely ask her not to shoot during Bruce’s set each night.
There were plenty of other bands and since we would never otherwise ‘restrict’ her activities, that seemed fair enough to us. Inevitably, however, trouble began the first night during Bruce’s set. Apparently, Lynn wanted the last word.
The much-coveted photo pass allowed photographers to shoot anywhere from the pit to the first ten rows.
A few songs into the set, Lynn showed up and started taking pictures from the eleventh row. As if that wasn’t enough, and even I wouldn’t believe this if I didn’t see it with my own eyes — she was taunting him — making faces and sticking out her tongue!
None of us could believe it as we stood there on the side of the stage wondering what Bruce would do. It was pretty impossible to ignore. Lynn continued, undaunted, even when a couple of security guards tried to stop her. She just smiled and flashed her photo pass.
Bruce continued playing amazingly, as usual, but we could tell something was about to happen. In the middle of a song, his adrenaline pumping, he jumped from the stage into the audience, grabbed Lynn by the hand, and literally dragged her on stage! “THIS IS MY EX-GIRLFRIEND,” he explained to the audience. He then looked at her and said something like, “Are you happy now?” A stunned and embarrassed Lynn was promptly escorted off the stage and out of the Garden.
Note: there were several more pages to this story. I can’t find them at the moment, so this is the end for now

I don't believe the story about Lynn Goldsmith making faces at Springsteen while at one of his concerts. It sounds like a tale concocted to exonerate Bruce for his awful behavior.

by Anonymous | reply 108 | July 9, 2018 3:05 AM |
r101 he got away with it because the elitist rock press were sucking his dick from day one. They made him into this creepy working class saint/hero lyric god.
A lot of middle class average white guys who wanted to be the jock or Prom King, but never would, so they substituted the next best thing--the burly working class outsider persona. Either that, or they were the esoteric "this isn't *real* music" types who had Trout Mask Replica on their greatest albums of all time lists.
Many of them were misogynists themselves.

I don't see his actions as being abusive or awful. He didn't hit her or harm her in any way. Did he humiliate her by announcing she was his EX girlfriend? Sure but he probably just wanted her to get it thru her head.= It's long past over. Move on.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | July 9, 2018 11:35 AM |
Pulling Lynn onstage like that was a dic move. And Bruce himself has owned up to his history of being an awful boyfriend and husband. But don't doubt for a second Lynn didn't know what she was doing by abusing her press pass and taunting him from the audience. The one thing everyone who's ever met Bruce knows is you don't fuck around when he's onstage. Prince once gave an interview where he talked admiringly about watching Bruce in concert. Prince said at one point someone in the band messed up (I forget how exactly) and that Bruce turned around and gave the guy a LOOK. Prince said the guy quickly got right back in line and no more mistakes the rest of the show. Prince was impressed that Bruce was so in charge and respected that all it took was a look. The only way anyone could pull off those mammoth 3+ hours shows night after night was to run a tight ship like that and be laser-focused. Lynn was the official photographer for one of his tours, she knew exactly what performing meant to him.

There's never been anything to indicate that Springsteen is "bi." His onstage kisses with Clarence Clemons was just stage theatrics. And he's ALWAYS had a woman. I don't think he's ever done without one for even short periods in his life. The Boss has always been a pussy hound, but he seems to be a one pussy at a time kind of guy, that is, not promiscuous.

by Anonymous | reply 159 | October 20, 2018 7:18 PM |
I know he lives to perform and basks in the adoration of females in the audience, but he would actually allow female fans to run onstage. jump him, and KISS him. On the mouth. He once commented on a "little girl", maybe 15 years old, "with braces on her teeth", who rushed him and french kissed him: "she had her tongue so far down my throat I almost choked." He obviously allowed this kind of thing to happen, which made me think he must be kind of crazy. French kissing fans? How utterly gross.
