Are any of Tony Bennett's contemporaries alive?

God bless Tony. Still hanging in there, still making music, still successful well into his 90s. Are any of his contemporaries from music (the classic standards / jazz / cabaret) singers still around?

So young.

by Anonymousreply 1July 4, 2018 9:47 PM

He's the last of the hard-school NYC saloon singers.

by Anonymousreply 2July 4, 2018 9:50 PM

I love his singing with Garland.

Actually r1 I had an 80 something store owner call me young after asking me how old I am.

I'm 57.

by Anonymousreply 5July 4, 2018 9:54 PM

Here's a list for you, OP, though some may no longer qualify since it hasn't been updated for over a year...and it lists quite a few more than 10, so the title is a misnomer.

Amazing singer!

by Anonymousreply 7July 4, 2018 9:58 PM

I've heard that Madonna still performs occasionally.

by Anonymousreply 8July 4, 2018 10:02 PM

Ah, to the good ole days of show business!

by Anonymousreply 9July 4, 2018 10:03 PM

Annie Ross is still around, and Jon Hendricks was until last October.

I guess Jack Jones is a little later, but he's still performing.

Doris Day, of course, but she doesn't perform.

by Anonymousreply 11July 4, 2018 10:44 PM

Steve Lawrence would be considered a contemporary.

by Anonymousreply 12July 4, 2018 10:46 PM

Jeez, he even outlived Frank Sinatra, Jr.

by Anonymousreply 13July 4, 2018 11:29 PM

Nancy Wilson is 81. Although she retired from performing in 2011.

Johnny Mathis is still going strong at 82.

by Anonymousreply 15July 5, 2018 5:10 AM

Peter Lemongello is still alive. I'm old, bored and barely alive so you'll have to google this 1970s wunderkind on your own.

by Anonymousreply 16July 5, 2018 5:22 AM

He smokes weed everyday and has for most of his life.

by Anonymousreply 17July 5, 2018 5:44 AM

Barbra is older than Tony and a semi invalid but she still attempts to sing if there's a lot of cash involved.

by Anonymousreply 18July 5, 2018 5:47 AM

r11

You don't know what I do, so how about a good dose of shut the fuck up.

by Anonymousreply 19July 5, 2018 6:35 AM

Charles Aznavour, 94

by Anonymousreply 20July 5, 2018 6:38 AM

Who can ever forget Tony's incredible dramatic performance in *The Oscar", starring DL fave Stephen Boyd?

by Anonymousreply 21July 5, 2018 8:26 AM

Al Martino died in 2009. Vic Damone died in 2018, but retired in 2001. Johnny Mathis is just a baby.

by Anonymousreply 22July 5, 2018 8:37 AM

Harry Belafonte

Marilyn Maye is from Tony Bennett's generation, and is still actively performing. (She's appearing in Provincetown this summer.) She's 90.

Dame Shirley Bassey is 81 and semi-retired.

Shirley Jones? Although she was not really the same kind of performer.

by Anonymousreply 27July 6, 2018 2:20 AM

After all this hemming and hawing, yes, Tony is the last of his species.

by Anonymousreply 28July 6, 2018 3:01 AM

The last of his species if you choose to ignore Johnny Mathis, yes. OP merely asked whether any of his contemporaries are still alive.

by Anonymousreply 29July 6, 2018 1:49 PM

Sonny Rollins is still alive.

by Anonymousreply 30July 6, 2018 2:01 PM

Rip Taylor

by Anonymousreply 31July 7, 2018 4:52 PM

I admire Bennett's career, but have always found him to be a very bland singer.

by Anonymousreply 32July 7, 2018 5:22 PM

R6, Tony Bennett is not a "jazz musician." Neither were his now dead contemporaries like Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Rosemary Clooney, Perry Como, Vic Damone, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin or Sammy Davis. They were all popular vocalists - singers of popular songs of their day.

Harry Belafonte is a true contemporary of Bennett's, almost exactly the same age. Jack Jones, Johnny Mathis, Shirley Bassey, Streisand, Viki Carr, Nancy Wilson - all in the ten years later group.

by Anonymousreply 33July 7, 2018 5:39 PM

Thanks for sharing, R33--you might want to notify the person who put the list together in the link since Bennett was included on that list. I'm also the person who added Belafonte at R23 and R24.
