Alan Dershowitz laments being ‘shunned’ on Martha’s Vineyard

"One downside to publicly defending President Trump? The liberal elite on Martha’s Vineyard won’t like you anymore.

At least, that’s what renowned Harvard lawyer Alan Dershowitz is lamenting.

In an op-ed piece for The Hill published last week, Dershowitz said his friends on Martha’s Vineyard are “shunning me and trying to ban me from their social life” because he has defended Trump’s “civil liberties.”

Dershowitz reportedly moved to the Vineyard after retiring from his Harvard Law professor job in 2014. He even offered pal John Kerry advice on how to fit in on Martha’s Vineyard when Kerry swapped his Nantucket home for one in Chilmark.

But Kerry might want to rethink taking any advice on how to be popular on the island after reading Dershowitz’s recent piece. The renowned defense attorney wrote that even though he’s politically liberal and voted for Hillary Clinton, “that is not good enough for some of my old friends on Martha’s Vineyard.”

One of those friends, described by Dershowitz as an academic at a distinguished university, “has told people that he would not attend any dinner or party to which I was invited.” Other friends have “demanded ‘trigger warnings’ so that they can be assured of having ‘safe spaces’ in which they will not encounter me or my ideas,” Dershowitz said.

But ever the optimist, Dershowitz said the whole ordeal has a silver lining: It has taught him “who my real friends are and who my fairweather friends were.”

“From a personal point of view, I could not care less about being shunned by people whose views regarding dialogue I do not respect,” he wrote. “I will not change my views as a result of these attempts to ostracize me, but there are some who may remain silent for fear of being shunned. Silence is not my style. Cowardice is not my philosophy.”

The anecdote supported an argument Dershowitz was making about Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who had called on supporters to harass Trump and members of his administration.

“Right now I am speaking up in disagreement with Maxine Waters,” Dershowitz wrote in the op-ed. “She — like those who shun me on Martha’s Vineyard — is part of the problem rather than the solution.”

Dershowitz has recently surprised many by becoming an outspoken supporter of Trump’s legal positions, arguing that a special counsel shouldn’t have been appointed and claiming there’s no evidence that the president has obstructed justice. He has even become known as a sort of “Trump whisperer,” gaining the president’s ear after making his opinion on the special counsel case known on national TV news networks."

Yes, one would certainly have to be a member of the "liberal elite" to want to avoid this Trump-loving POS.

by Anonymousreply 3July 2, 2018 11:24 PM

Doesn't realize he's shunned on MV because he's 1: insane. And 2: a Jew.

by Anonymousreply 4July 2, 2018 11:25 PM

Thoughts and prayers.

by Anonymousreply 5July 2, 2018 11:25 PM

The poor dear.

by Anonymousreply 6July 2, 2018 11:26 PM

Maybe he just overtakes the conversation and people don't want to be backed in a corner. It's exhausting to be overtaken by the person who thinks he's the smartest one in the room. Insight goes a long way.

by Anonymousreply 7July 2, 2018 11:27 PM

My, life is certainly not a bowl of cherries for him, is it?

by Anonymousreply 8July 2, 2018 11:28 PM

His arguments for Trump are a subtle combination of small truth and principle and a large amount of falsehood and disingenuousness.

by Anonymousreply 9July 2, 2018 11:28 PM

[quote]Other friends have “demanded ‘trigger warnings’ so that they can be assured of having ‘safe spaces’ in which they will not encounter me or my ideas,” Dershowitz said.

Never happened.

by Anonymousreply 10July 2, 2018 11:30 PM

He should have been shunned back when he was defending torture.

by Anonymousreply 11July 2, 2018 11:32 PM

He defends Trump solely because Trump is up Israel and Netanyahu's ass. The law, the constitution and anything remotely decent be damned according to this "law professor."

by Anonymousreply 12July 2, 2018 11:33 PM

“...overtaken by the person who thinks he's the smartest one in the room.”

He is most likely the smartest person in the room at most gatherings.

Not a fan, but denying that he is brilliant is beyond stupid.

by Anonymousreply 13July 2, 2018 11:38 PM

womp womp

by Anonymousreply 14July 2, 2018 11:40 PM

I think he is brilliant, and he uses that brilliance for nefarious purposes.

by Anonymousreply 15July 2, 2018 11:40 PM

Which really isn’t all that brilliant...

by Anonymousreply 16July 2, 2018 11:42 PM

He still has one friend to hang with on the Vineyard

by Anonymousreply 17July 2, 2018 11:43 PM

If he were truly brilliant then he wouldn't be writing that essay. Couldn't he see the back of that bus?

by Anonymousreply 18July 2, 2018 11:47 PM

He's being shunned because he's amoral trash.

by Anonymousreply 19July 2, 2018 11:50 PM

Why exactly do people like Ingraham hangout in "blue" country? Shouldn't these assholes who make their living bashing "liberal elites" be hanging out in Branson with the "real 'muricans"?

by Anonymousreply 20July 2, 2018 11:51 PM

His arguments are not well thought out and well reasoned as they were in his heyday. He's in the same category as Rudy.

by Anonymousreply 21July 2, 2018 11:51 PM

I feel like Dershowitz is a lot like Salman Rushdie in that they dine out on the one thing that made them famous. And they spend the rest of their lives being impressed with themselves and acting like everyone is supposed to be impressed.

by Anonymousreply 22July 2, 2018 11:53 PM

Dear Alan, I don't really care. Do u?

by Anonymousreply 23July 2, 2018 11:55 PM

He's a piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 24July 2, 2018 11:56 PM

There's more to brilliance than just knowing the law. Brilliance might be knowing when to STFU and stop annoying the neighbors.

by Anonymousreply 25July 2, 2018 11:57 PM

I'm was planning a day trip next week to Martha's Vineyard. If I see him on the nude beach , which he is rumoured to visit, I will shun him also. I know. Nude beach. Ewww.

by Anonymousreply 26July 3, 2018 12:01 AM

Trump and his “well-heeled” defenders love the Deplorables as long as they stay over there and out of sight. Imagine if Dershowitz had to actually—gulp—socialize with a Trump voter. The horror!

The Red Hen Incident should be happening to all of these amoral demons.

by Anonymousreply 27July 3, 2018 12:03 AM

I really don’t care, do u?

by Anonymousreply 28July 3, 2018 12:09 AM

He is a great man

by Anonymousreply 30July 3, 2018 12:28 AM

R27

It’s a strategic mistake.

Every incident of “shunning” only results in MORE people deciding to come to his defense.

Even my BernieBro date this weekend admitted that it wasn’t productive to the November Message.

by Anonymousreply 31July 3, 2018 12:30 AM

Oh Alan, go dine with Dinesh D'Souza (who(m) Trump pardoned) who retweeted the hashtag #BurnallJews. Y'all could probably have great convo.

by Anonymousreply 32July 3, 2018 12:32 AM

Lie down with dogs ...

by Anonymousreply 33July 3, 2018 12:35 AM

Dershowitz is a long-time POS. His first wife Sue Barlach discovered that he was having an extramarital affair and destroyed some important legal papers in retalization. She had to be hospitalized after he beat her. Dershowitz then sued for custody of their two kids. The mental and physical abuse allegedly led her to commit suicide.

by Anonymousreply 60July 3, 2018 11:23 AM

Can someone here tell me the story about his first wife, Sue Barlach? I've seen alot of references to her in comments sections but google seems to have scrubbed most information. Is anyone here old enough to know the story? I've heard it involves domestic abuse.

by Anonymousreply 62July 3, 2018 11:31 AM

Alan Dershowitz is a scummy lawyer and Donald Trump water carrier that twists logic to defend Trump on news shows regardless of the indefensible acts. If this were 1930s Nazi Germany he would be defending Hitler too.

by Anonymousreply 63July 3, 2018 11:35 AM

Trump is a reincarnation of Joe McCarthy. Stephen Miller is a reincarnation of Roy Cohn. Dershowitz licks the assholes of these scum.

by Anonymousreply 66July 3, 2018 11:42 AM

Dershowitz has made a lucrative career defending cold blooded killers, he's a disgusting Zionist and zealous Trump defender (and liar--that "triggered liberals needing a safe space" remark is complete bullshit).

And now he's whining they're not being nice to him where he vacations in the summer.

He figured out a way to throw out evidence that convicted Claud von Bulow for murdering his wife. Is that something to be proud of? An effective sleezebag?

On what planet is Donald Trump not the most deprived and incompetent POTUS in history? If the slippery smart lawyer has friends, as he says, why does he care about the “liberal elite” on the Vinyard. by Anonymousreply 83July 3, 2018 2:49 PM

R82 It's difficult because of his support of Israel. He is basically supporting Trump because of that one issue. He is jettisoning any liberal instinct he has because of his Zionism. He will do everything to deny Trump has violated the laws of this country due to his Israel obsession - particularly in defense of the far-right, racist govt in place now. by Anonymousreply 113July 3, 2018 7:32 PM

I don't know enough about obstruction of justice to know if Trump is guilty or not. Dershowitz has had some opinions I agreed with, disagree with and don't understand. I do admire his respect for the US Constitution. For example he is pro gun control but thinks it has to accomplished by repealing the 2nd Amendment. I have no idea what his position on the Takings Clause is about. He seems to be pro-Israel but I'm not clear on exactly what his position is. Honestly not that interested at this point. For example he supported the People's Mujahedin of Iran being removed from the terrorist organization list. I'm not fond of his idea that non-lethal torture is OK provided the state gets a warrant. On the other hand I'd rather the state be required to get a warrant than be able to put someone on a plan to parts unknown for the CIA to torture.

I don't think he is complaining about missing beach parties. I think he is making an observation that we see here on DL all the time. Look at the vitriol that was hurled at anyone who supported Bernie Sanders or even people who pointed at the flaws in Hillary Clinton's campaign, actions or policies. No discussion.

As far as his activities as a criminal lawyer - that's the way our system works. We have an adversarial system where the defendant is entitled to a vigorous defense.

I'm part-Palestinian and this asshole who believes in "laws" thinks he or any other person -particularly white Jews- should have more rights there from the moment they step foot than my generations of relatives. The current defense secretary is a Moldovan ex-bouncer who has been there for like 20 years and thinks my family should be ethnically-cleansed. DOn't attempt to sanitize Dershowitz despicable viewpoint. He's an absolute racist douchebag. He attacked Obama for insufficiently groveling to the Likud despite the increase in welfare they got under his presidency.

I'm disappointed that "shunning" was the best that MV could muster up for poor social pariah Alan. I bet the fine citizens of Hyannis would happily burn him at the stake.

by Anonymousreply 117July 3, 2018 7:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 120July 3, 2018 8:40 PM

Why hasn't Trump been more linked to Epstein? Trump obviously has a predilection for young girls given his statements in the past.

by Anonymousreply 121July 3, 2018 8:49 PM

R122, well and there was a lawsuit against Trump accusing him of raping a 13 year old girl. He’s guilty. Pedophile.

by Anonymousreply 122July 3, 2018 8:52 PM

R122 oh YEAH I forgot about that. Fingers crossed Cohen has the dirt on that and is going to give it to Mueller.

by Anonymousreply 123July 3, 2018 9:06 PM

The media was noticeably silent about Epstein during the campaign, which was interesting given their obsession with sensational stories and the fact that he was linked to both Trump and Bill Clinton. Just one of the things they weren't supposed to talk about.

by Anonymousreply 124July 3, 2018 9:25 PM

The media wanted Dump and still wants Dump. Make no mistake. It is all for show. He bashes them, they rail against him. By the time the election comes around, watch the talking points change. The Dem, whoever it is, will be boring, or (add idiotic media language) and they'll ignore all the shitfest that has gone on for so long.

The news should not be for profit!

by Anonymousreply 125July 3, 2018 9:31 PM

R125 So true. It's funny how the NYT and their head cunt in charge , Maureen Dowd, went aggressively after Clinton during the election. And now they ,and so many other media outlets who did the Same thing , have the nerve to whine about Trump.

by Anonymousreply 126July 3, 2018 9:40 PM

Those same "liberal" media outlets writing Deplorable "hurt feewings" articles every other day.

by Anonymousreply 127July 3, 2018 10:05 PM

It is true, R125. They might build the Dem up if they can create some antagonism in a way they like, then give more time to Trump for ratings.

by Anonymousreply 128July 3, 2018 10:13 PM

R115 I love you're comment because it's so true. Trump was foisted upon the public for decades in America until NBC finally gave that asshole a show on their network.

That trashy show legitimized trump enough that he's now the president of America now!

I'm glad you said what you said, because it's so fucking true. He was desperate to make himself happen.

by Anonymousreply 129July 3, 2018 10:17 PM

Enough with the pedophile shit. It sounds like nut case crap that can never be proven, and possibly put out by the right wing.

by Anonymousreply 130July 3, 2018 10:18 PM

Thank Mark Burnett, that asshole. He has all the tapes from the TV show where Dump uses the N word a lot, harasses women, and makes him look really bad in general but he won't give them to the media or Dump. He knew Dump was a despicable man yet continued to let him on TV. Burnett is supposedly very Christian as well. LOL.

by Anonymousreply 131July 3, 2018 10:21 PM

His visits to Epstein's island of jailbait are well known (right, as his lawyer, sure) and there are direct allegations by the woman currently suing Maxwell and Epstein for pimping her out as a young woman. Where did they find her? Mar a Lago? What does she say? That Dershowitz was one of many who used her for sex at the urging of Epstein and Maxwell. Coincidence that she was found working as a towel girl in a Trump establishment? Maybe. Maybe not.

by Anonymousreply 133July 3, 2018 10:31 PM

Why do the rich and powerful always get away with shit like this? Though the 15 year old babysitter from my area who got preggers from the 10 year old she was babysitting also got off easy (10 years). But she had 3 of his babies. Yes, 3. She had his baby when he was 10, 11 and 12. Her parents said they didn't know who the father was. Maybe it was her age.

The Martha’s Vineyard crowd strikes back at Alan Dershowitz

“You thereby gave Trump an opportunity to use you and your positions in his own defense, to wave you like his pom-pom. How unfortunate for all of us,” wrote Teller, a partner in a Beverly Hills law firm. “You defended and gave cover to this president who relentlessly disrupts and destroys all that we value and causes massive and lasting damage to our political system, our courts, our standing in the world, the environment and more. In all of that you are complicit.”

Teller’s e-mail, shared with the Globe by one of the many island residents to whom it was forwarded, also attacked Dershowitz personally, saying he has a quenchless appetite “to be in the public eye, to have a seat at the table, even if the table is at Fox News, Mar-a-Lago, the White House, with Bibi (Netanyahu).”

Why doesn't he move to Florida where he belongs? He doesn't belong in Martha's Vineyard and he knows it. If he's shunned, well that's his own fault. Of course no one is going to socialize with a jew who promotes Israel or/and trump! WTF does he THINK?

by Anonymousreply 149July 4, 2018 1:01 PM

There is not much on the internet in respect to his first wife Sue Barlach.

From the linked article:

"Other independent, anonymous sources have now come forth to corroborate the story of how the ambitious, controversial lawyer, known for defending wife-beaters, wife-killers, the use of torture, and the apartheid militant Jewish state of Israel, was responsible for beating his first wife Sue Barlach so badly that she had to be hospitalized, and how Dershowitz then used his formidable litigious clout to intimidate local and nationwide news sources, including CNN, from publicizing the wife-beating event and her subsequent suicide, apparently by jumping off a bridge in New York (the Brooklyn Bridge, to be exact, according to one anonymous source).

"In fact, Dershowitz had been so thorough at snuffing out the memory of Sue Barlach, his first wife, that an internet search using Google came up with absolutely nothing about his first wife, unless you already knew her name. "

^should be shunned.

by Anonymousreply 156July 4, 2018 5:08 PM

His hair used to be curly. Has he Timberlaked himself?

Also, r95, I don’t understand it, either. Just noticed this among some people I know who are wealthy and young! One example is a 30-something year professional woman who works at an extremely prestigious organization. She spends a small fortune on herself, but her teeth are yellow-brown and a few look sort of decayed. She and her husband make a ton of money and aren’t afraid of spending it. I don’t know why she doesn’t get them whitened, at least a few shades. She grew up wealthy.

Another is a 40-something woman, same deal. Her teeth are white but they’re small and have space between all the teeth, something like a jack-o-lantern. Her father is a legit billionaire and she could have been given braces (her sister has perfect teeth).

Perhaps it’s that sort of “I don’t need to impress anyone” thing that the very wealthy do.

by Anonymousreply 157July 4, 2018 5:10 PM

Dershowitz is a schmuck. He's what my father would call 'a real Jew.'

by Anonymousreply 158July 4, 2018 5:15 PM

Hair texture can change as you age, r157.

I'm inclined to believe that many of his MV neighbors (and people elsewhere) have found him increasingly tiresome and self-regarding over the years and this was just the last straw. Most intelligent adults understand that everyone's entitled to due process and whatever, but Dershowitz tends to make it about himself, as he did in The Hill piece and subsequently in a letter to the Boston Globe: he essentially portrays himself as braver and more honorable than others for doing what he does. Most people figure out early in life that it's best to let others praise you that way.

He was a schmuck in Cambridge in the late 60s--early 70s, so nothing's really changed except his contemporaries' tolerance for him.

by Anonymousreply 159July 4, 2018 5:16 PM

Fuck the Boston Globe for adopting wingnut lingo like "liberal elite."

Alan Dershowitz’s dance card full amid outpouring of support--Shunned for Trump opinions, legal eagle now man in demand

Legal scholar Alan Dershowitz is a Trump pariah no more on Martha’s Vineyard, after news that he was being shunned by the island’s summering elites prompted a flood of invitations from people across the political spectrum — and he’d like to air the issue in a public forum.

“I’ve gotten invited to like 25 4th of July parties,” Dershowitz told the Herald yesterday. “I have more people welcoming me now than ever before.”

Dershowitz said the ostracization he experienced is part of a broader intolerance on the political left for any dissenting views. Dershowitz said he wants to hold a discussion on the nation’s bitter partisan divide in a public venue on the Vineyard.

“I’m happy to respond,” he said, about any criticism of his defense of Trump.
