Marches are about as useful as 'thoughts and prayers' but it makes some people think they are helping. It makes me think of the lyrics to an old Buffy Ste. Marie song, "...love junkies want to change the world, it quickly stays the same". Sad but true :(
by Anonymous | reply 1 | July 1, 2018 2:04 AM |
I went. I live in Austin. I didn't go with the expectation that this rally, any rally or my attending will change our current situation. In fact, I suspect that TPTB see the rallies as a confirmation that everything is working as planned. The deplorables will see the whining by the snowflakes as a sign that their big tough alpha president is hurting them good. As you can probably tell, I have been incredibly cynical and deeply depressed about our current situation. So, I guess I went despite my feelings and in hopes that collecting with like-minded individuals may spark a renewed fight in me. I'm not sure it accomplished that , but it did give me some hope that younger people may be fired up enough to fight and just maybe energized to vote in November. I have gone to a number of these rallies in the last year and this one definitely skewed younger. We need that. The young are the ones that don't vote.

Let's be honest: it was a grab for attention. More stupid bullshit and did about as much good a long toenail.

by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 1, 2018 3:13 AM |
I couldn't make it. I had brunch, then a mani/pedi and then hot yoga.

Because keeping kids with law-breaking child abusers is low on my list of priorities. The kids are probably better off in foster care and I don't want to encourage more people risking their children's safety to "find a better life" at my expense.
Do you know anything at all about the condition of American citizen children in need in the foster care system? Have you been to any rallies for them lately?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 1, 2018 3:18 AM |
How many people that attended this truly care about the "issue" at hand? It was all about the FARCEbook post to please the SJW friends. I'd rather go to a festival...at least they sell beer and you can reconsider buying that artistic wind chime from China that you considered purchasing three festivals ago.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 1, 2018 3:39 AM |
I went. I wanted to see/be among the people who are likewise angry instead of just reading about them online. I vote. I'm going to donate more. The media covers marches and they all have more participants than attendees at Trump's inauguration so I like rubbing that in.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 1, 2018 3:54 AM |
I went to about five marches last year. I didn't march today because I went to a wedding. It was a really fun wedding.
I will march again in the future. For the most part I send recurring donation to groups like the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and Democratic election campaigns.

I don’t associate with anyone who is the kind of person who would participate in a protest. I’ve been adjacent to a rally to gawk at people, but that’s it
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 1, 2018 4:03 AM |
I’m with R6.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 1, 2018 4:10 AM |
These rallies are just a way for white-guilt liberals to feel good about themselves and post on Facebook about how woke they are. After the rally's over, they stop to pick up a $7 latte and go back to their Beaver Cleaver neighborhoods, the thought of actually housing a desperate migrant family never crossing their privileged minds.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 1, 2018 2:58 PM |
I did. At least two thousand attendees, very hot. Heart-breaking accounts from asylum seekers

On the other side of the spectrum, the Right had some kind of prayer rally in Portland yesterday, Antifa showed up, fighting ensued, police had to intervene and break up the "riot". Antifa got demolished, some knocked out cold.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 1, 2018 3:08 PM |
I admire all of you who attended. If I lived in the US I would have.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 1, 2018 3:13 PM |
Here’s the thing, bitches
1. No one, I mean, no one chooses to be an asylum seeker, these are not joy riders just getting on a greyhound bus
2. It’s not a crime to seek asylum.
3. Children should never ever be separated from their parents if the parents are seeking asylum. This is entirely immoral
4. Sorry, the US is MUCH richer than you cunts are making out. It can take all the asylum seekers it can, and then some. It’s the responsibility required of being a very large wealthy nation
5. Dentention centers are making a killing, more than 700 dollars per child each night, more than staying at the trump plaza. These dentention center CEO are all big campaign contributors to Trump.
6.No one posting on this thread is a full blooded quechua or Lakota, so shut the fuck up!

First and foremost, no. But please do make this the center of the Democratic platform. *eyeroll*

Oh please. There are asylum seekers in Europe who openly admit to being just that. They come from the Balkans and apply for asylum in the north of Europe to get free room and board for a few months.
Then there are the others (Arabs/Africans) who pretend to be actual asylum seekers, but the fact that they've crossed many safe countries to get to a prosperous one tells you that they're not.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 1, 2018 4:59 PM |
Have any asylum seekers who traveled through Mexico explained why they didn’t seek asylum in Mexico, if safety was the reason for their leaving their country? It would refreshing to hear an asylum seeker state that, yeah, it’s about money.

We are not the United States of the World. We have borders for a reason. We have enough citizens of this country to help before citizens of the other countries. I hope the Wall is built and people have to go to only certain points to seek asylum or gain entry. Caught coming over the wall you are just dropped right back over or sent right back where you came from to get in line at an official entry point.

by Anonymous | reply 70 | July 2, 2018 2:40 AM |
Lets see: kids in cages!! oh noes!
Detention centers getting $700 per night per kid from the government.
Well which is it? I posted about the very attractive centers I saw on TV and was treated as though I was retarded for believing what I saw.
They truly DID look like a high end kids' camp,,,even though that phrase was spoken by Laura Ingraham rendering it bullshit.
The kids were never in cages. They were in gigantic caged areas as they were being processed in. Then they went to the plush colorful dorms with TVs, video games, toys galore and dining halls. $700 a day folks.
I guaran dam tee that 80% or more of those kids thought they had died had gone to heaven once they cleared in processing and arrived in one of the spanking new air conditioned dorms. Considering many were living in tar paper shacks, the dorms seemed like the Ritz Carlton to them.

My local Indivisible group of about 450 marched in a small college town near me, which is in the vicious (dark) heart of Trump country.
There was considerable verbal abuse of the protesters, and even one incident of severe harassment of an elderly woman using a walker. There were minor dustups started by the Trumpers. They were in your face and cowardly, lying to local media that the protesters were bussed in, and that they were violent. Liars.

I just would like to know how these people are supposed to be integrated into a first-world economy. Automation keeps growing and will continue to replace many jobs. The US no longer has a manufacturing base. There is already a severe problem with poverty among native-born citizens. I just don't see how the huge influx of unskilled, non-English speaking, illiterate or barely-literate people is going to be absorbed into a modern first-world country where technology and automation are just going to keep changing the fabric of society.

I don't know or care why they didn't seek asylum in Mexico.
Maybe because Mexico is not a place that will keep them safe?
Or maybe they want to be here for a better future.
Either way, torturing them and their babies for it is deeply fucked up mentally and ethically and so I protested that upjumped incel Stephen Miller and Orange Hitler for what they did.

As for the heat, I read(on a non-biased site--not FoxNews) that the government spent 15 million dollars just to install sufficient air conditioning systems throughout the containment areas.
Do you think Mexico would do that? Think about what Mexican prisons are like? That is why I was not kidding when I said that the actual dorms that are strictly for residency and not holding areas, likely seemed like a 5 star hotel to the majority of those in asylum quarantine.
Remember, the majority of them have just spent months crossing treacherous desert land with no water, a/c or beds and food. You going to tell me that the housing doesn't seem quite comfortable to them?

Wow! As the big sister in a pre-adoptive (good, loving) foster family I I have seen first hand just how traumatic it is for children to be removed from even the worst parents. R6, R70 and R73 are moral monsters. And by the way those worst parents retain their due process rights because this is America where the Constitution defines us, not brain dead nativism.
Taking children from their parents without due process is kidnapping whether the man in the van works for ICE or is a free agent. Putting children with loving parents in Foster care is social engineering and a waste of my American taxpayer dollars. Wasting taxpayer money to engage in stare sponsored anti-family lawlessness is not a conservative value.
I marched yesterday with about a hunded people from one primarily Republican municipality to another. The response from cars and onlookers was overwhelmingly positive. There was no violence.

But, oh no! There are drug cartels and drug gang danger in Central America! Hello...Chicago.)
Asylum was never intended for those who want a better life. You may hate that, but it is true legally. You have to be able to prove that you are being persecuted by the government to be granted political asylum. It has never been about the standard of living, or for those starving. Why? Because if we set a precedent for taking starving people in, where do you draw the line?

by Anonymous | reply 154 | July 3, 2018 3:06 AM |
I agree, r154. All immigrants at this time, even with tons of cash and great resumes, go through lots of bureaucracy in order to gain a visa, I know personally. Hiding in the US is possible, but you still pay taxes. And if you ever very get caught in a crime, you are immediately in deep doodoo. Immigrants are mostly the most law abiding residents. these yahoos wouldn’t know an immigrants from Santa Claus
by Anonymous | reply 155 | July 3, 2018 3:27 AM |
R154 I appreciate you responded to another list but the message that immigration helped build America, immigrants contribute to the US etc (all true of course) is coming out at these rallies, not just “don’t separate families.” So there is a push for more pro-immigrant policies more broadly.
You’re not being honest in my opinion if you’re acting as if that’s not the case, so you can just forget about the “open borders” straw man and acknowledge that this policy exists because more people want to enter the US than the US should ever sensibly take. It’s designed to dissuade attempts to immigrate and of course it should be abolished immediately, but “keep families together” isn’t the only message being put out there during this issue getting airtime. It’s possible to deplore this policy and at the same time support strict border controls (the same poster across multiple threads gives themselves away by not being able to spell one of the words in this sentence).

Ms Merkel admitted 1.5 million + immigrants WITHOUT allowing a vote in Parliament on it. A decision that profoundly changed German society was OUTSIDE the democratic process.
Imagine a US President, admitting 6 million immigrants (the equivalent by population) of mostly young men, mostly with a marginal education, to enter the US in one year, WITHOUT allowing Congress to vote on his/her decision.
Impeachment would follow immediately

America takes in more refugees and immigrants numerically than any other country, but as a percentage of our large population, we are WAY down on the list.
As a percentage of population, immigrants make up 14% of our population. Ahead of us are Sweden, Germany, Canada, Austria, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and many of the wealthier countries of the middle east. All together, more than 60 countries have more immigrants residing in their borders as a percentage of their population than we do in the US. Another 30 or so, mostly countries in Europe, are close to us in percentage (anywhere from 10-14% of their populations). This includes France, the UK, Norway, Belgium, Greece, etc. Spain, Denmark and Italy are lower - about 8%. for Italy and Denmark, and 9.5 for Spain. The really poor nations of the world have very few immigrants - which makes sense. Why would someone desperately poor emigrate to somewhere desperately poor?
Mexico is not particularly strict in regard to border control and immigration, as any American citizen who has walked over the border to Mexico knows first hand. (No one stops you, no one looks at your passport). . It's easy for Americans of a certain economic level to become Mexican citizens. What Mexico doesn't do (because it is a poor third or second-world nation) is give easy citizenship to poverty-stricken immigrants.

by Anonymous | reply 188 | July 5, 2018 12:59 PM |
R180 I want to clarify what I said in my post in order to assure you all that I did not come here recently from Reddit or any other site.
I used the term "upvote" because frankly that is what Wit & Wisdom has come to mean in this iteration of Datalounge. Formerly it was an honor above honors, and most of us were fortunate to receive one or two per year. Now, and I ask you to excuse what appears as boasting, I usually find that I have anywhere from 15 to 35 when I log in each day. Of course, I post in a very wide array of thread subjects---politics and Trump represents the lesser end of the conglomeration.
I used the term upvote because I feel it is just a bit less pompous than using W&Ws, which makes it sound like I said something incredibly profound and brilliant. No, I merely said something that perhaps 8 people agreed with.
And the idea that I have multiple accounts and browsers is hilarious. I can barely handle this one(with my thirty plus active threads.) It also seems a bit paranoid on the part of the accuser. Does he really believe that there are Dataloungers who are so invested in their ideology that they will turn some fun commenting on a gossipy board into a job?? Who would do that?
