Horrible movie. Just a bunch of scenes strung together. The sum of its parts doesn't make a corherent movie. And there were no character development, all cardboard cutouts, including the boyfriend and those embarrassing excuses for movie friends. Unsympathetic, unresponsible main character. Just throwing your phone in the fountain and ghosting your boss is not a way to quit your job. She should be blacklisted. Couldn't believe she would get a good reference based on how she acted.

I love this movie! *hangs head in shame* It is a guilty pleasure of mine, I've seen it at least 5 times.

I told myself, go ahead, hire the smart, ....fat girl

I'm NOT your baby.

The boyfriend is awful.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 30, 2018 4:12 AM |
I agree the boyfriend was terribly miscast. What happened there? Did someone owe his Dad a favor or something? No chemistry with AnnE at all, they weren't believable as a couple.

Oh I loved it. M was superb.

It's a fantastic movie; one of Meryl's best roles. The two montage scenes of Miranda and the coats/purses and Annie and the changing outfits walking to work are both super effective.

I don't mind whathisname from Entourage as the bf. It's a thankless role anyway. M is sublime. I would have preferred Rachel McAdams instead of AnnE. She would have been more believable as someone who would actually be able to wear a sample size.

I am with R7. Love it! Streep made the movie for me.

Today Miranda would be the Harvey Weinstein of magazines. The shit she pulled on her staffers would make those type headlines today.

Anne was a smart lady. She had her contract to let her keep all the clothes and accessories she wore in the film.
Also the film was educational. That's how I learned about ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐. And I'm a much better person for it.

I love that movie. Meryl is fantastic.
Didn't Emily get a nomination for her role? So did Meryl.
Did Anne get one?
I loved that Chanel necklace that Andy wears. Gorgeous.

This and Adaptation are the only movies I like Meryl Streep in. I quote the same line as OP all the time.

Emily whatshername was the best thing in the film. Gisele was surprisingly good, too.
I watched it on a plane and skipped all AnnE/boyfriend scenes, which were super dull.

Simon Baker was super sleazy with his invisible harmonica wedged between the teeth smile.

Emily did not get a nomination but she got something much more important - a movie career in the US. The character wasn't even supposed to be a Brit - they changed her from American to Brit because Emily's audition was so fabulous.

R17 And Blunt was so good (and it was the first thing I remember seeing her do) that I still have a difficult time when she plays a nice or likable character--I know she isn't the bitch she played in Prada, but she is so indelibly etched in that role for me.

It's on HBOGo, and because you guys talk about it, I'm watching it so that I'll hopefully understand the inside jokes.

By all means move at a glacial pace, you know how that thrills me.

Fashion adjacent... I read an article about Valerie Steele from f. I. T. She sounds insufferable. I knew Richard Martin well and even he admitted that his job was pretty flaky.

I finished the movie. I now know where the references from the movie come, but I'm not seeing why it's quote worthy.

When I finally got around to watching it I was surprised at how dated it felt, like a 1990s movie, not 2006. And trying to pass off the friends and boyfriend as basically good people who were right to try to drag Andy down was cringey. That part was ripped off from Reality Bites, anyway.

" And trying to pass off the friends and boyfriend as basically good people who were right to try to drag Andy down was cringey."
Exactly. Those 3 characters distract a lot from the strong performances by Streep, Blunt and Tucci. Maybe it was the script.

None of the friends or boyfriend were developed characters. You never believed they were friends anyway. They just seemed like stock characters from a bad movie. This whole movie was a mess. It was all just quotable scenes strung together without plot or direction or narrative. This would have been better as a sketch show. Just show random sketches of Miranda dealing with stupid Andy.

I liked it for the fashion porn and Miranda was funny. I could have done without the rest.

Emily has the one terrific moment in the movie that shows she's not the cunt she appears to be. When she's in the hospital a sweet looking orderly bring her lunch in on a tray and she stops bitching to Andy for a second, smiles and him and mouths thank you. As soon as he exits she goes back to being her cunty self. I love that one small moment because it gives the character a soul.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 22, 2018 8:36 PM |
Another Emily moment was when she thanked Andi for remembering the Ambassador's name.
