Adam failed to capitalize on the success from American Idol. He was in a unique position, an openly gay singer who was widely embraced by middle America, whose performances thereafter seemed to reaffirm every gay stereotype. I'm all for performers being true to themselves, but Adam came across as trying too hard to be edgy. The arty thing doesn't really work when your producing generic pop music. Bowie and Alice Cooper experimented with their self image, but they were also pushing the boundaries of popular music while they were at it. Lambert had the singing chops but was obviously no songwriter.

Statements like these just advertise how desperately insecure he is. He could be a serial dater privately, but it's nothing that should be advertised. I used to be a fan of his and would constantly defend him but even I can tell he's lost his shot at relevancy years ago.

Adam was out in his personal life for a decade before Idol. He grew up in a very supportive, liberal family and lived in WeHo for many years. All of his friends were artists and performers. With all that support and acceptance, he had limited experience with homophobia. Adam fatally overestimated the extent to which the wider world was ready to embrace an out and proud gay Idol.

I saw him with Queen earlier this year, and he's amazing. His voice is strong and he gives a great performance. I'm not a fan of the makeup being worn by gay men like Adam, Frankie Grande, and even some guys I've seen just walking down the street (yes, I'm in California), but otherwise he's a valid performer. I do wish Lambert had signed on to play Hedwig on Broadway though; he would have been f'ing fantastic!

I hate to introduce her name into this discussion...but I believe Ann Rice wrote a book that had nothing to do with vampires, but was set in Italy and was about a castrato. It was a real bodice ripper type story, but I remember it as being good in a melodramatic way. Now if Adam wanted to make a period film he could definitely play the lead.
