Emma Stone a very old Jo or a young Marmee?
Meryl as Aunt March?
Maybe a film would be less slow moving than the recent BBC version.

I know some here hate Winona Ryder, but it would be difficult to improve on the 1994 version directed by Gillian Armstrong. Ryder isn't a perfect Jo, but she does well and the rest of the cast is perfect, including a very charming and appealing Christian Bale (and when was the last time you would use those words for one of his performances?).
Plus the marvelous location photography and beautiful score.
I tried watching the BBC version but it was mediocre.

Let’s not forget about Claire Danes.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 29, 2018 7:04 PM |
I agree r12 but since it's happening just wish Streep wasn't in it. All this talk about inclusiveness in Hollwood yet Meryl is still getting all the older woman parts. Not that the US has a lot of great actresses but come on.

How many roles did Kate and Miss June Allyson share?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 29, 2018 7:06 PM |
R3 is correct about the age issue. The girls are teenagers in the story, and none of the actresses in the article are teenagers or believable as the mother of teenagers. They should be looking at main actresses in their teens and early twenties, and a fortyish Marmee.
Okay, Ronan passed as a teen in "Lady Bird", but Stone is 29 already and she'll be 30 by the time the cameras role! Bitch, please, a 30-year-old Jo will not do.

Clare Danes is 39, old enough to play Marmee. That's the age range they should be looking at, early forties or able to pass as such, and that means people around Danes' age - Rachel McAdams, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Chastain, Amy Adams, Charlize Theron, etc.
I nominate Kate Winslet. She's always good.

I like this movie when it came out, but I can no longer abide Susan Sarandon and want to throw something at my TV at the sight of her, so this one is off the table.
I didn't think the BBC version was so bad - the guy that played Laurie was pretty good and I thought Maya Hawke was actually serviceable as Jo. They changed some parts that took away from the story, like Beth's death scene, but given all the ugliness in the world, LW was sort of a sweet break from it all.
That said, this idea stinks; this bunch would be like some scenery chewing, over-dramatizing nightmare
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 29, 2018 8:50 PM |
In the name of gender equality, I think it would be good if they did an all-male version of Little Women.
Brian Dennehy as Daddy, Vin Diesel as tomboy Jo, Jeremy Renner as the one who dies, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp as the other sisters. Christian Bale could reprise his role as Laurie and Jeremy Irons as the professor Jo marries.

Kate Hepburn was the best Jo March. Best Mary Tyrone. Best Tracy Lord.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 29, 2018 10:24 PM |
Who could play Aunt March? Maggie Smith? Can't think of a suitable elderly American actress.
And probably Christopher Plummer as Laurie's grandfather as all Plummers American contemporaries are dead.
If Tim O'Tay is about why not Armie as the prof? They could throw in a few lingering looks and maybe some skinny dipping for the pair........
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 29, 2018 10:37 PM |
If there was ever a Kate Hepburn role, it was Jo.
Meryl can't play Marmee - she's 20 years too old!
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 29, 2018 10:47 PM |
Kathy Bates as Aunt March? She's officially 70, and does grumpy no-bullshit well.
Gawd, some of you are thinking way, way too old, as are the casting agents! Meg, Jo, and Beth should be in their late teens or early twenties for real, Marmee should be late thirties to early forties, and Aunt March should be 70s, not 90s.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 29, 2018 10:50 PM |
R45, Hepburn really works as Jo March--a New England tomboy playing a New England tomboy--that hyper, energetic quality of hers is the best thing about the early version. She gets Jo in a way no later performer has. Otherwise, my favorite LW cast is the Gillian Armstrong version--Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes and Christian Bale are all strong in their roles. Trini Alvarado's forgettable, but not bothersomely so. Winona Ryder's okay, but she doesn't embody the part the way Hepburn did.
Weirdest cast--June Allyson as Jo, Elizabeth Taylor as Amy in a blonde wig. Mary Astor, who was Marmee, was a bit snarky about the whole experience in her memoir. She got fed up playing "mothers for Metro"--she really enjoyed doing DL favorite Desert Fury though.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 29, 2018 10:51 PM |
Meryl Streep will be almost 20 years older than Edna May Oliver was in 1933 when SHE played Aunt March to starchy sapphic perfection.

[quote]Why is Gerwig recycling “Little Women”? There are so many true stories about inspiring women that could be produced.
Here's what's depressing about this to me (other than the fact that the world does NOT need another goddamn Little Women adaptation): Auteurship is extremely tough for female directors to maintain - look at the number of them who make a successful breakout film based on their own original scripts, then end up being directors for hire or directing for TV after their next film flops. Gerwig - whether or not you think she deserved it - received enormous acclaim for Lady Bird, and it feels like a squandered opportunity for her to use that cachet to do something as tired as a Little Women adaptation, when she could keep going with her own original stuff. (And yes, I know she wrote this adaptation.) There's also a long history of female directors having enormously successful first films that they wrote themselves, then choosing to adapt someone else's work for their next film - and it throws them off creatively for a long time, sometimes never to really recover. So many female directors would kill to be in her shoes, and she does this. It's boring and uninspiring.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | June 30, 2018 12:25 PM |
Maybe despite the acclaim for Lady Bird this is best Greta is offered. There have always been very limited opportunities for female director's.

Looking at the imdb page, Sarah Polley has a screenplay credit. She was also a hot director after "Away from Her", like Gerwig is now. I wonder why she is not directing, and also what is with every hot young female director having to do a new version of "Little Women"? Yes, I'm exaggerating, but we need another version like we need Pence as our next President
by Anonymous | reply 93 | June 30, 2018 9:48 PM |
I agree that Danes was terrific in the '94 film, the best Beth of all.
The Hepburn film is very creaky and I find her mannered at times but she gets the tomboyish aspect very well. The 1949 version is not worth bothering with.
I hope Polley does a better job here than with the very overrated ALIAS GRACE, which drowned in all that voiceover narration. I hoped for better given her excellent work on AWAY FROM HER.

R87, exactly. You pretty well summed up what I’ve been feeling. It’s pretty difficult to follow up a big success with another just like it. I feel for her. It seems right that she’d stick to woman-centered works, but this is a bad misstep. There has to be some other work she could direct.
Personally, I love Sofia Coppola’s movies and think Gerwig should lean in that dicrection.

How many times has “Little Women” been filmed? There are not only Hollywood movie versions, but TV movies and miniseries. There are so many other powerful stories about women to film and Gerwig choses “Little Women”. Why is she afraid to take risks?
by Anonymous | reply 101 | July 2, 2018 9:43 PM |
Timothee will be the prettiest of the sisters; Amy (played by Ronan) will be wildly jealous and likely try to burn his i-Pad in fit of jealousy, though later will fall through a pond and drown, so it all works out since no one liked Amy and her little pig nose and ratty curls. Beth will be played by the chubby friend in Lady Bird and will likely die of gastric surgery gone horribly awry. Jo will find her dream job coaching ladies basketball at UT. And Meg will...well, Meg was always sort of boring so maybe she can move out early in a huff over having to wear an old gown to the rave.

Streep is actually good casting for Aunt March. But if they’re thinking they can get away with making her Marmee, that will be ludicrous.
I’d like to see Ronan as Jo. Emma Stone is just too young for Marmee, but she’s really too old for one of the girls.

Streep is too old to play anything except Aunt March Meg is certainly not the focus of the story, and Stone, at 30, is also too old to play her. She might have made a good Jo....in 2008. It's being made for modern audiences, many of whom have never seen the version from 24 years ago. Get over it

I'm fine with a remake, I suppose, but enough with Meryl. I can't stomach her anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | July 3, 2018 4:59 AM |
Audiences don't need to run to imdb pages to see the actresses' ages - they can see it on the screen! Streep will be 70 years old next year.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | July 3, 2018 5:01 AM |
Left and right actresses are being cast for roles they are 20-30 years too old for but poor Barbra gets stoned for wanting to play Gypsy.

This will be "Little Women" for the #metoo generation. Marmee (Streep) has raised her daughters not to kowtow to men or wait for any man to ask for dance. The March women will do as they please, thank you very much. Sisterhood!
by Anonymous | reply 135 | July 3, 2018 5:07 AM |
Yeah - let them make the movie and stop complaining
by Anonymous | reply 136 | July 3, 2018 5:11 AM |
R123 is correct. Stone might have been an okay Jo ten years ago, she does play awkward misfits well even if I've never seen her play a tomboy. But she's too old now.
And yes, the girls who play the March sisters really do have to be young, teenagers or early twenties, NOT thirty! Thirty year olds don't put on plays with their sisters in the attic or "come of age", and they can definitely cope when their Marmee leaves town. And in 1860 they don't work entry-level jobs and whine that they want to be writers, hell, they were lucky if they weren't grandmothers by that age.

Trini Alverado was late 20's when she played Meg.
No one in the production was harmed.

Marmee should be someone in her early 40s at most. Like Reese Witherspoon, but less of a cutie-pie MILF. Like Jenna Fischer or Elizabeth Banks or Linda Cardellini.
Thank Christ they didn’t smoosh Jennifer Lawrence into this shit show.

WW for R139. On this note, stop asking about threads for this French lamb. DL is not the platform for him. Deal with it. And I agree with R140. Imagine JLaw in Emma’s place....ugh.

The Susan Dey mini series allowed more of the story to be showcased, but I always sensed that Meredith Baxter would have been better as Jo and Susan as the often flummoxed Meg.

Greta is making the same mistake that Sophia did with The beguiled . Remaking the classic with straight A list white actors is not where it's at in filmmaking.

The Clint Eastwood BEGUILED is hardly a classic. I watched it again recently and there's a fair amount of bad acting in it, much of it by the star.

by Anonymous | reply 155 | July 4, 2018 4:18 PM |
Sorry, but a film about white girls is totally where it's at--the forced diversity of a Wrinkle in Time has limited appeal. I expect to see more diverse films--so more black films, more latino centered films--but the wedging a black family member just to be "diverse" feels contrived. Meanwhile, there's a quiet insurrection led by women in this country. Or not so quiet. Plenty of women will take their daughters to this film. Think of how successful Frozen was.
Part of the reason Little Women is being remade is because pretty much every film of it has been a success (don't know about the TV film.)
That said, Emma Stone and her low voice would have made a great Jo years ago. And actually JLaw would have made a good Jo back when she was a teen-ager.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | July 4, 2018 9:26 PM |
Jennifer Lawrence is too sexy to ever have played Jo. Emma Stone could have been a good one 10-12 years ago, she does do intelligent misfits well.

Exactly how many adaptations of Little Women do we need? This woman was just being hailed as a visionary female director earlier this year., and her next project is the 7th remake of a tired property.

It will be impossible to see this film and not compare it with the one made by Winona Ryder, Claire Danes and the handsome Christian Bale. It will be better? We'll see, Mrs. Gerwig bets on a strong cast counting on Meryl Streep, Saorise Ronan or Timothée Chalamet.

I understand the decision to cast the Marches with white actresses (so they can all appear believably related) but I think prof baehr could easily (and probably should) be cast with a poc because he's meant to be 'foreign' anyway and changing his country of origin wouldn't alter the story much

That was basically the Susan Sarandon version. They should have called it Little Women: I Am Woman Hear Me Roar!
The most recent version was dreadful. Even Angela Lansbury couldn't see her way through it.
Alas, I think Miss Alcott will be like Charles Dickens and we will see 10,000 productions of Oliver Twist with everyone trying to put their stamp on the genius stories.

That modern version looks horrific. If they really wanted to update it, they should have Jo fall for a woman in college. God knows the lesbian subtext is there with her dis of Laurie and her being matched up to a sexless older guy at the end of the book.
by Anonymous | reply 191 | August 15, 2018 8:32 PM |
This is filming in October i wonder whether Emma stones part will be small because I'm sure she will be spending most of the winter and fall doing promotion for her Netflix show and then for her likely awards contender film... (ronan , pugh and chalamet have fall/winter release films too )

I know this is an ensemble cast but which characters are the main ones?. No, I haven't read the book nor seen the movies.
by Anonymous | reply 194 | August 17, 2018 11:31 PM |
R191 is correct about how to update it, but this is a story that doesn't need updating. One of the more charming things about the book is that it's a wonderfully detailed slice of life in another era, when life was both similar to our own and different. It's always interesting to watch the March girls try to impress their peers on a budget, just like modern girls, but to be shocked to realize that chicken was once more expensive than lobster!
And R194, the main characters are the four March sisters, with their mother and the boy next door as the main supporting characters. But Jo March is the POV character, everything is seen through her eyes.
by Anonymous | reply 195 | August 18, 2018 12:05 AM |
I'm playing Amy, for heaven's sake.
And if I'm in a good mood I may let G play Mr. March. She's still got her Albert's Nob costumes. Wears them all the time, Patti sez.
by Anonymous | reply 196 | August 18, 2018 12:12 AM |
I think this adaption is to focus on the girls teen/adult years with flashbacks so while jo will still be the main character they could also really focus on Amy or Meg too
by Anonymous | reply 197 | August 18, 2018 4:49 AM |
[quote]r195 Jo March is the POV character, everything is seen through her eyes.
That character's the closest to the author's own personality, and got a sequel of sorts in LITTLE MEN, but neither story's told from her point of view.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | August 18, 2018 6:13 AM |
At this rate they should title it Little Old Women.
by Anonymous | reply 200 | August 24, 2018 9:31 PM |
How about a big screen version of Designing Women instead? M could play Bernice Clifton and James Norton could either be Mary Jo’s hot ex-husband or Charlene’s Bill. Laura Dern as Julia Sugarbaker.
by Anonymous | reply 201 | August 24, 2018 10:35 PM |
Watson would be replacing Stone--so I'm guessing that this is Jo, but Saoirse Ronan's also supposed to be involved, so maybe not. Meg, maybe? With Florence Pugh as Amy?
by Anonymous | reply 202 | August 24, 2018 11:19 PM |
I presume that Stone is playing Jo, Ronan is playing Beth, and that Watson will be left with the boring role of Meg. Frankly, they're all about ten years older than they ought to be.
Still, they could do worse than Stone, who did a decent job of butching it up in "Battle of the Sexes". She succeeded in playing someone who looked totally wrong in feminine clothing.
by Anonymous | reply 203 | August 25, 2018 6:13 AM |
Stone's out--scheduling conflicts--Watson, according to the Hollywood Reporter, is replacing Stone--so is she Jo or Meg? Saiorse Ronan does leads these days--I doubt she'd be Beth. She might be Amy, who's nearly as strong-willed as Jo.
by Anonymous | reply 204 | August 25, 2018 6:18 AM |
Ronan as Amy? Amy is supposed to be what, twelve when the story begins?
by Anonymous | reply 205 | August 25, 2018 6:22 AM |
Saoirse is Jo. Stone, now Watson is Meg. Pugh is Amy. The actress playing Beth is still unknown.
by Anonymous | reply 206 | August 25, 2018 6:25 AM |
Thanks R206--that makes more sense. Saiorse has a stronger screen presence than Watson.
R205, the film is supposed to be focused on the sisters when they're older.

Saoirse Ronan- Jo March Emma Watson- Meg March Florence Pugh- Amy March Eliza Scanlen- Beth March Meryl Streep- Aunt March Laura Dern- Marmee March? Timothée Chalamet- Laurie James Norton- John Brooke? ( Meg’s husband)
Where’s my gourgeous Friedrich Bhaer?

R214, Because she's available. She's a last-minute replacement for Emma Stone. Not the end of the world, Saiorse Ronan's playing the main character and she should be good.
Re: Twitter--fuck Twitter. Professor Bhaer's a German emigre and should be played by someone who can look German. Period.
by Anonymous | reply 216 | August 25, 2018 9:56 PM |
Jesus, again with this? Dear Hollywood, please stop remaking this movie (also Spider Man).
I don't know that I have a favorite version; I guess the Susan Sarandon one, where they wisely had two actresses play Amy. The '33 Katharine Hepburn version is ridiculous because Joan Bennett plays Amy, who's 12 at the beginning of the book. Bennett was 24, towered over the other actresses, and was pregnant to boot and she still plays it as as 12-year-old (realizing this was not her decision); it's kind of mortifying to watch. The '49 version with June Allyson is pretty much a scene-for-scene repeat of the '33 one; same screenwriter, and Allyson seems to be copying Hepburn's mannerisms, and her Jo just seems annoying.
Just read the book; it's wonderful.

It's not good, R222.
From what I've seen Stone is a much better actress than Watson, she's proven her ability to play slightly butch, and she can do an American accent without even thinking about it.
by Anonymous | reply 225 | August 29, 2018 8:13 PM |
I agree with R225. I don’t like Watson either. She’s plain in everything she does. She’ll always be Hermione in my eyes.

But Stone and Watson were cast as Meg, who's very feminine. The slightly butch one is Jo played by Saiorse Ronan.
Watson should be fine, not as interesting as Stone, but it's a supporting part.

R227 They just chose Watson because of her fanbase. They’re more leaning towards a commercial movie.
by Anonymous | reply 229 | August 29, 2018 8:24 PM |
I also think Watson will be fine. Emma backed out because she realized her part would be very small (or she is on drugs again).
by Anonymous | reply 230 | August 29, 2018 8:34 PM |
CDAN says Emma Stone backed out because the script was bad (allegedly). I thought it was weird she agreed and then she backed out because of “promotional” duties for The Favouite. Wouldn’t her people know in advance whether or not she was available? Seems sketchy.
by Anonymous | reply 231 | August 29, 2018 8:44 PM |
R231 And...you believe CDAN? Okayy....The script isn’t bad. She just changed mind.
by Anonymous | reply 232 | August 29, 2018 8:47 PM |

R233 But you cited it as if it were a reliable source...Anyway, the rumours go like this: she was already seen in preproduction this summer with Meryl and from other sources she was on board with the project, but something came up. What that “something” is, that is still unknown. Overall, even without Stone, the movie still has a strong cast so I have high hopes for this movie, even though as many other users said the story has been recycled to death.
