Pearl Jam's "Jeremy"
For decades, I thought this song was about a bullied boy who ends up shooting his classmates, and I thought that was what the music video was about, too.
I heard it on the radio today, and looking up the backstory, found out it was a real life kid, Jeremy Wade Delle, who shot himself to death in front of the whole high school class. A sad, tragic story, and a haunting song.

Didn't they pull this video from MTV around Columbine?

I thought it was about Jeremy Renner shooting his fangurls!

He doesn't shoot his classmates in the video. He blows his brains out and his blood spatters all over his classmates.

Yeah, I remember the director making that clear when he won his MTV award. I guess he was sick of people misreading the blood and frozen reactions from the kids -- though easy mistake as shot. He had the actor who played Jeremy (well) up there with him too and pointed out he was alive and fine. Still a great song and still a great video.

Should have explained it earlier. I thought it was a Columbine type thing.

I was obsessed with the band as a young kid and of course this song (to my knowledge it was their biggest hit and perhaps the pinnacle of their popularity) back in 1993 or so. MTV played this song incessantly and none of us could get enough of Eddie back then. Actually, Pearl Jam had quite a few hits before it (on the indie/college charts back then) and somewhat coasted into the spotlight on Nirvana's coattails. I owned this album maybe 1 to 2 years before "Jeremy" became this smash hit. Sadly, this song, this band and almost all of the grunge music that I used to idolize just didn't hold up well over time for me. Perhaps my opinion will change but I honestly have no interest anymore. Certain eras can be nostalgic, but for me - grunge is not one of them.

They did a great version of "Crazy Mary" for a tribute album. It will always remind me of a younger friend who died in the '90s in a car wreck. He loved that song.

I think it's a ret-con. "But we unleashed the lion"?? "King Jeremy the wicked ruled his world"? How could this be about anything but a school shooting?
