Greatest Songwriter Of All Time?

In Your opinion, who is the best songwriter? I love Dolly Parton’s Songs. Although, I love Jon Bon Jovi/Richie Sambora, and Elton John.

Wow difficult to choose just one.

Who is the unhinged loon who thinks Stevie Nicks matters?

She is a very minor footnote in pop music history.

by Anonymousreply 32June 29, 2018 1:02 AM

"Fleetwood Mac blew up in the Seventies thanks to three top-notch singer-songwriters — guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, bluesy songbird Christine McVie and the gypsy queen herself, Stevie Nicks. Her "Rhiannon," "Sara" and "Gold Dust Woman" were full of post-hippie witchy imagery, but under the gossamer surface, they were deceptively tough-minded accounts of heartbreak and betrayal in the L.A. heyday of free love and hard drugs. She and Buckingham were a couple when they joined Fleetwood Mac, but some of her greatest songs came out of the wreckage of their relationship — including the Number One "Dreams." "We write about each other, we have continually written about each other, and we'll probably keep writing about each other until we're dead," she told Rolling Stone last year. She remains undiminished as a writer, as she proved on her 2011 gem In Your Dreams. But her most famous song is still "Landslide," her acoustic lament for children growing older, written before she'd even turned 30. "I was only 27," she said. "It was 1973 when I wrote it, about a year before I joined Fleetwood Mac. You can feel really old at 27."

Elton John and Bernie Taupin . Having a top 40 Billboard hit every year for 27 straight years is quite an accomplishment. But mostly , I like the diversity of their songs from simple ballads (Your Song, Daniel) to fun pop (Honky Cat, Island Girl) to R&B (Philadelphia Freedom, Bennie and the Jets) to straight-up rock and roll (Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting, The Bitch Is Back) to the bombastic torchers (Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me, Someone Saved My Life Tonight) to instrumentals (Song For Guy,Funeral For A Friend). Really talented duo.

r64 Seconded on Steely Dan, but I'd add Larry Carlton's name with them. AFAIK, he did his own solos, and he was their arranger for a lot of their best songs; that can morph into writing fairly easily.

If you're interested in a deep dive, Rick Beato is a producer/musician who has a YouTube channel with a "What Makes This Song Great" feature where he breaks down classic rock/pop songs. The quality has gone down a lot because he got take down notices and demands to alter content, but the intact ones are good. He doesn't even play the whole song, just parts which is clearly fair use but Fagan (and oddly Radiohead and Joshua Homme) are dicks about it. This is the one they left up/unaltered from Steely Dan.

Someone in pop music who is probably one of the best songwriters ever is Max Martin. He's not a household name like a lot of other people in the business, but he's been responsible for the pop sound of the last twenty years. He's written 21 #1 songs (behind only the Beatles), sold over 135 million records and has been responsible for most of the careers of the biggest names in music (Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Katy Perry, Kesha, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Ariana Grande and many, many more). This only goes until 2012, but this video is just a taste of how many hits he has had. It's really remarkable he's so press averse considering how massively successful his songs are. Every DLer has heard at least one of his songs. Not every writer has that to their credit.

Cold blue steel out of money

One eye for the beat police

Sweet Fire calling

"You can't deny me

Now you know what you need"

Underneath the jungle gym

Hollow grey fire escape thief

Looking for sweet fire

shadow of Lady Release

"Come with me

I know the way" she says

"It's down, down, down the dark ladder

Do you want to contact somebody first

Leave someone a letter

You can come now

Or you can come later"

A wristwatch, a ring, a downstairs screamer

Edgy-black cracks of the sky

"Pin cushion prick fix this poor bad dreamer"

"Money" cold shadows reply

Pawnshops crisscrossed and padlocked

Corridors spit on prayers and pleas

Sparks fly up from sweet fire

Black soot of lady release

"Come with me

I know the way" she says

"It's down, down, down the dark ladder

Do you want to contact somebody first

Does it really matter

If you come now

Or if you come on later?"

Red water in the bathroom sink

Fever and the scum brown bowl

Blue Steel still begging

But it's indistinct

Someone's hi-fi drumming Jelly Roll

Concrete concentration camp

Bashing in veins for peace

Cold blue steel and sweet fire

Fall into Lady Release

"Come with me I know the way" she says

"It's down, down, down the dark ladder

Do you wanna contact somebody first

I mean what does it really matter

You're gonna come now

Or you're gonna come later"

I'm on your side, when times get rough / And friends just can't be found

Like a bridge over troubled water / I will lay me down
