After dating a few actors in NYC, I can date them no more.
Is being intensely selfish and self- important standard in actors?

Yes, especially when an actors ego is bigger than his stature.

Even the constantly unemployed actor thinks he’s God’s gift to the world.
Years ago I dated an actor for a bit. I helped him with his lines and went to his shows.
Two months into the relationship, we were at a party. Someone asked him what I do for a living. Without hestitation, the actor said, “I have no idea.”
I ended it that night

I have 3 actor friends, one that decided to try it after the age of 50! The youngest one in his thirties is actually getting real work and paid well for it and ironically he is the most humble of them all. The other two are so fucking into themselves its unbelievable To the point of getting together has to involve "actor" type game exercises. Like lets all do improvy shit at a party. So desperate to make it, but not getting anywhere one has basically cast off all his non-actor friends in one of those simplistic quotes about "only surround yourself with more successful people than you are" kind of crap. EVERYTHING revolves around them and their career even if they don't have one. No loyalty or interest in anyone who cant is some way benefit their career.
Bonus points if they have already fired one manager become they are not getting the parts they thought they should with such great talent.

They have to always be the center of attention. Relationships with actors work if you would rather be a wallflower

Have actors always been the narcissistic or only since successful actors have gotten so rich and famous (mid 20th century)?

Society looked down on actors before the 201th century.
They were equated with whores (some of them were) and street peddlers or beggars. In ancient Rome, they were refused certain privileges of the citizen -- I don't remember exactly.
In Medieval Europe, the Catholic Church would not allow actors to be buried in Catholic cemeteries.
