Did YOU watch the TV movie Alexander the other side of Dawn in the 1970s?

Was this film at the time seen as a pro-bisexual/gay film? Or a negative film about bisexual and gay men? Or was it not as popular since it didn't have Eve Plumb/Jan Brady as the starring role like the first film Dawn portrait of a teenage runaway did?

A gay friend of mine said how as a then closeted teenager living in Los Angeles in the 1970s, this film gave him a glimpse into the gay and bisexual scene, and he later came out as an adult in his early 20s. He was never into hustling, or trying to bed famous closeted gay and bisexual actors and celebrities.

At the time all that mattered was that it starred Leigh McClosky

It totally made me want to be a hustler when I grew up. And, no, I'm not kidding. Though once I moved to L.A., I never went that far -- though I did hang out on the blvd and pretend (and at Numbers too).

Leigh! Yeah I recognized him from watching Dallas in syndication. His character was smug, but he was nice to look at. His filmography is a lot longer than I had expected. Sexy guy.

I was a preteen and remember that I wished that I'd had a big, masculine athlete who would want to have sex with me, even if I wasn't sure what all that would involve.

Alan Feinstein, sexy closeted football player, seduces the hustler. Great scene.

You can find almost anything on Youtube. I imagine people were taping everything on TV on their Betamaxes or VCRs, and they ended-up in a box in the attic or basement.

This is true, R7 - except that Youtube is constantly perused for those looking to enforce copyright infringement and therefore a lot of content does not last all that long.

Pro-bisexual/gay? Have you seen the movie OP? It was about homeless teenagers who turn to prostitution to survive. You honestly think homeless teenagers turning to prostitution are all gay or bi? What do you think the straight ones do?

He was so hot on Dallas.

Wasn't he also in that movie Just One of the Guys? (sounds like a gay porn, but it's not!)

by Anonymousreply 10June 24, 2018 12:44 AM

R9, the straight ones do anything but sell their bodies, including stealing food, begging for cash, etc.

R10, "It's alright it's alright! He's got tits!"

by Anonymousreply 11June 24, 2018 1:30 AM

I thought Alan Feinstein was so hot...even back to his days on "Edge Of Night".

by Anonymousreply 12June 24, 2018 1:34 AM

As I recall, the film made it urgently clear that the protagonist was straight and in love with hooker Jan Brady, he tricked with men purely for survival.

Never realized the celebrity trick in "Alexander" was also the asshole professor in DL classic "Looking for Mr. Goodbar". Great actor.

Is this the movie where Earl Holliman plays a gay social worker? I wonder if the rumors about him started because of this. Always thought he was unconventionally hot.

R13 if the character was hetero/straight how was he seduced by the football player character? It's not as though bisexuality was unknown in the 1970s. The film also has the male prostitute character being kept/picked up by older women.

by Anonymousreply 16June 24, 2018 2:35 AM

R16 - are you asking how a homeless teenager is seduced by someone who shows him some kindness? How a homeless teenager is seduced by someone who provides him with food and shelter? The movie is not about a kid making choices based upon his sexual orientation. It's about a kid with no choices.

by Anonymousreply 17June 24, 2018 9:30 AM

Spot on, r17

by Anonymousreply 18June 24, 2018 10:28 AM

Was the hustler shown having clients other than men, because that would really have been a stretch.
