What was it that Elizabeth Taylor did that made her eyes pop!?

And her body is amazing compared to women these days, famous women included. What gives??

by Anonymousreply 14June 21, 2018 7:33 AM

She had some genetic condition that gave her a double row of eyelashes. When she went for one of her first film auditions the director thought she was older than she was because of her sexy eyes. Ppl thought she had eye makeup on when she didn’t. That same condition may also have caused her many of her other health problems throughout her life.

I wish it were possible to see what she looked like in her prime in color HD: those violet eyes are super rare!

by Anonymousreply 15June 21, 2018 7:51 AM

Earrings and caftans

by Anonymousreply 16June 21, 2018 7:56 AM

Seriously R15?

I’ve heard a lot about her over the years - but never have heard that before!

What is this rare genetic condition called?

People usually go overboard describing her ‘violet’ eyes. But they just look like a very deep blue shade. Maybe towards purple-ish on the colour wheel - but not actually violet. Anything that makes them look that way is probably a colour filter/lighting while being photographed.

Anyway - she certainly had striking colouring - her deeply coloured eyes against creamy, porcelain skin when young - framed by the dark (possibly mutated, double-thick!) lashes looked gorgeous and photographed beautifully.

I have a friend - known her since our teens - both Middle aged now. She has green-ish/hazel eyes - and very similar colouring and hair to the young Taylor. My friend isn’t as gorgeous - she was always a bit chubby - and had an even weaker chin than Liz. But holy cow she looked great when we were young - masses of thick, black curly hair and these really thick, black lashes framing pretty eyes. I don’t think they were weirdly genetic mutation lashes - but they did have an effect similar to la Taylor’s.

When my friend eventually fell in love and married The One - one of the many things about her he was crazy about - was that he claimed that when she cried - she actually looked pretty. She didn’t blotch up - and big fat tears would tumble from lashes that looked even thicker and more fetching than when dry. It really did look like Hollywood special effect crying (and wtf do straight men sign in for? she was ‘pretty when she cried’ - Urgh! I’ll never understand heterosexuals!)

by Anonymousreply 17June 21, 2018 8:15 AM

She was just naturally beautiful, with a stunning face, those unreal eyes, and a really amazing figure when she was young - very small and slight, yet with startling curves.

For a few years, anyway. I think she took her natural beauty for granted, no unnatural beauty lets themselves slide the way Liz did! No, it took hard work for them to get beautiful, and god damn they're going to keep putting in the work to stay beautiful if it kills them.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 18June 21, 2018 8:20 AM

Women were allowed curves in those days, which are more dramatic than the slabs of today's females.

by Anonymousreply 19June 21, 2018 8:27 AM

Liz’s body from when she was young till she started to thicken up in her thirties was actually pretty good. She was short legged, etc and certainly had some flwas - but when young she was relatively slender with great jugs - and it really suited the fashion and looks of the late forties and fifties. She was gorgeous in Father of the Bride - and even young and slender - she was still likely to have been corseted to within an inch of her life to achieve photographic perfection.

Then she got a bit older - and liked to eat and drink. And she got a bit bloated - and then huge. It happens. Grace Kelly was slender and lovely - till she hit menopause - and that coupled with the booze - saw her thicken up and get matronly. It’s a rare metabolism or an awful lot of willpower and exercise that keeps slim into middle age and beyond...

Look at that Aguilera clip for Candy Man - holy cow! Her body is amazing! Just perfect - and then look at her now. Abd douvt she’s anyway near menopausal! It’s a constant struggle...

by Anonymousreply 20June 21, 2018 8:27 AM

What did Liz do to make her eyes pop? Later in life she used a horrific amount of purple eye shadow to give herself fake "violet eyes", but early on she just used a lot of black eye liner and black eyebrow pencil. That was all she needed, with her lovely pale skin. That kind of "high contrast" look is out of fashion right now, nowadays all the girls seem to be trying to get their skin and hair to be the same color ("low-contrast"), but the opposite was what worked for Liz.

And yeah, her eyes are really a dark blue. This picture is from before she started wearing too much purple and having her pictures retouched.

Yes her eyes were dark blue

by Anonymousreply 22June 21, 2018 8:31 AM

by Anonymousreply 23June 21, 2018 8:32 AM

Here she is with minimal makeup and her natural eye color, which I suppose is a blue-gray rather than a true blue.

She didn't need a lot of makeup, but damn - she needed some conditioner!

R17, R15 is right. I think we both saw the same “Autopsy” program. She had a genetic condition that is very rare.

[quote]Taylor's twin-set of lashes are thought to be the result of a genetic mutation at the FOXC2 gene. ... An extra row of eyelashes is known medically as distichiasis (pronounced dis-tic-key-i-asis) and it's a rare disorder. Eye specialists refer to it as an "accessory row" of eyelashes.

by Anonymousreply 34June 21, 2018 9:16 AM

It had appeared to be a sensational find. Just days after the death of one of the world's most photographed women a unique picture surfaced: a young and beautiful Elizabeth Taylor posing fully nude. That the star had allowed herself to be pictured naked raised eyebrows among fans and Hollywood historians as part of her allure was an unwillingness to be involved in explicit shots. But now it has emerged that the picture is almost certainly not of Taylor - and may well have been taken when the actress would have been eight. The naked "star" of the photograph is believed to be a minor Hollywood dancer, who had to be persuaded to strip for the shot by a photographer who went on to become one of the key chroniclers of the era of Hollywood glamour.

Last night the American photographic agency which released the picture said it had suspended its distribution while there was a "possible challenge to the veracity". And the widow of the photographer who took what appears to be the original photograph in 1940 said it was an "absolute falsehood" that it was Taylor.

R24 That is the most beautiful I have ever seen her look.

Absolutely gorgeous. I never cared for the black hair/white skin/red lips sort of beauty, but your photo shows me she was much more than that.

by Anonymousreply 36June 21, 2018 9:19 AM

She was GORGEOUS. The booze did her in, along with sunbathing, and smoking.

I knew a young woman who resembles her. Naturally stunning. She drinks, smokes, parties with blow, and I inadvertently ran into her Instagram account the other day, and she has aged in doble time, due to her lifestyle.

You can’t do all of that, and expect to keep your good looks.

by Anonymousreply 37June 21, 2018 9:29 AM

Always thought Shetilyn Fenn’s stylists modeled her on the Taylor look - and if anything - Fenn had even better features - certsinly more of a chin!

Elizabeth Taylor was a beautiful woman. She is known as a "great beauty" only because she wes an international star. There are probably a couple beautiful woman in your daily orbit now. I am a professor so every year another couple e of beautiful young men and beautiful young woman arrive on campus. If you work in a big office building, there will be a couple. Not many. Maybe only 1 stunner.

by Anonymousreply 39June 21, 2018 11:41 AM

Her eyelash mutation may have caused her heart defects and lymphatic issues, which could have influenced her bloating/circulation/weight problems. I didn’t realize the violet eyes thingwas a fib. I just thought that film color processing (and film’s graininess/lack of definition with comparison to today’s ultra 8k digital technology etc) meant that her eyes looked different in every photograph and movie and no single one of them was a definitively accurate rendering. But yeah, they were dark blue. Very lovely, striking eyes anyway.

Richard Burton was an asshole, wasn’t he?

by Anonymousreply 45June 21, 2018 3:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 46June 21, 2018 4:06 PM

She is stunning when photographed from the waist up or in close up. But she was very short and after giving birth to three children, she had a mother's body. Fashion always favors long and lean, but Liz did will on short on voluptuous.

I attended the preview of the Christie's auction of items in her estate. There were scores of caftans. Little short caftans. And platoons of shoes. The shocking thing about the shoes was that they were all sizes 9 and 10. She had big feet for such a short woman.

But when photographed in portrait, no one could touch her.

by Anonymousreply 47June 21, 2018 4:32 PM

r26 - that's your idea of a bad body? Geez. I realize she put on weight as she got older - but as a young woman she had the kind of body most women want, with big boobs and a teeny waist

by Anonymousreply 48June 21, 2018 4:36 PM

She had lymphedema of the legs. I worked with someone who had that. If she dieted and stayed super thin, her legs looked ok. But if she gained weight, her legs became enormous. It was like she had two different bodies.

by Anonymousreply 49June 21, 2018 6:13 PM

One of the most stunning faces ever. The eyes, the nose, the mouth, their alignment, her coloring. I saw her in person a couple times, both times she was in one of her thinner phases- in the 80s. She was tiny and she was spectacularly beautiful. Could not take my eyes off her. Much better in person than in pics.

She was probably wearing a severe Merry Widow under her dress, R64 etc., something that cinched in her waist with slightly less force than a whalebone corset. Her natural waist was very small, as you can see in the swimsuit shots above, but no woman has a natural waist that small.

All the actresses of the 1950s wore pretty severe underwear under their New Look gowns. Heavy bras and girdles that went from thigh to rib cage if not the thing in this picture.

I met and talked to her at Reagans Inaugural Ball in 1981. We were at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. That particular Ball was for Virginians, Texans and some other state. I told the whole story on here a while ago.

But basically my takeaways : she had a beautiful voice, stunning eyes, and horrible skin. Crackled looking. I was standing right next to her, dishing about her rude husband and the very drunk Robert Goulet attempting to sing. She was just furious with him. I said I would leave her alone and she asked me to keep talking to her. (Hundreds of party goers were just staring at her.) It had to be at least a half hour. Finally, Senator Warner returned to us, she glared at him, thanked me for talking to her and they left. They left before President Reagan and Nancy made their big entrance. Which was probably a big no-no.

But they were two unhappy people. I just googled to see if I can find a photo, here is one of the couple earlier on that day. Doesn't look like she was too happy then either.

I really don't know. I just remembered being surprised by it. My mother smoked most of her life and she did not have it. Died at 85. My guess would be sun. I'm glad I got to meet her. She was so mad but she deserved to be. He humilated her in front of all those people.

By the way, I am a Democrat. We were there because my brother was an intern in Senator Laxalt's office and he was handed free tickets to every Inaugural event. So I went to the First Ladies event and then the Inaugural Ball. I figured I never get that chance again. Meeting Elizabeth Taylor was not something I would have ever expected to happen that night.

I have shared this story here before. Here it is again. I was at the National Portrait Gallery's exhibition of Taylor photographs in London years ago. Two American women were looking at the exhibit next to me. They were yakking away and I couldn't help but overhear. One was a friend of Sally Burton, they seemed to have met professionally, in publishing. She told her companion that in his final days, Elizabeth kept ringing the house in Switzerland, asking if Richard wanted to speak with her. He refused to take her calls.

by Anonymousreply 114June 25, 2018 7:46 PM

Well, wait just a minute. I thought that R Burton died of a massive cerebral hemorrhage. Those who die of such don't have "final days." Once it happens, then they're done - even if they linger for several days it's not as if they're awake and coherent, etc. I call BS on the two yacking ladies story.

by Anonymousreply 115June 25, 2018 8:31 PM

r104 The size ten shoes in the exhibit are from her obese and water bloated periods. I've seen her at in the early 1990s, back when she toured with her last husband promoting the perfume. She was petite and gracefully aged in person back then. No way were her feet any bigger than size eight.

by Anonymousreply 116June 25, 2018 9:00 PM

it was the color of her eyes. I went to school with a girl that had violet eyes and black hair. The combination was stunning. All you could do was stare at her because it was just beautiful

Taylor was of the generation where doctors prescribed pep pills — today known as amphetamines — to their patients on a very regular basis. The doctors thought they were doing a favor to these women who needed help with low energy, feeling sluggish and general malaise. Now they’d really be able to do all of that housework AND have an18” waist. Unfortunately, their natural metabolism was wrecked by the amphetamines and they gained significant amounts of weight when they went off the pills. Happened to at least four women I know of that generation.

A very pretty girl, but not much character to her face. Weakish chin.

by Anonymousreply 131June 26, 2018 2:06 AM

Which biographies or autobiography would be the best to read about Elizabeth Taylor?

by Anonymousreply 132June 26, 2018 2:28 AM

r131 "Weak" chin? Science says Liz's small lower face and full lips contributes to her hyper femininity aka beauty that men likes.

Science of Beauty: What Made Elizabeth Taylor So Attractive?

"She also had a feature that most people wouldn't think of as contributing to attractiveness, but really does, which is a small, gracile jaw," she said. "Which means a jaw that is kind of small and very hyper-feminine."

In puberty, men's faces develop brow ridges and square jaws, but women's features remain less pronounced in those areas, she said.

"If we think that one sign of beauty, and there are many others, is hyperfemininity, then she has that exaggerated lower face with large lips and a small jaw," Etcoff said. "That's one aspect of beauty that's very noticeable in her face."

r149 Marilyn was very pretty in her early 20s, but are you sure about her aging better than Liz? Marilyn was only 31 filming Some Like It Hot in 1958. On top of the massive weight gain her face was going too. It's like the lovely soft features she once had were hardening. It could be that she had more cosmetic surgeries. The planes had definitely shifted even then. The lower teeth were also shifting from smoking at least.

by Anonymousreply 164June 28, 2018 10:30 PM

[quote]I always thought Liz was much more beautiful than Marilyn.

Liz was absolutely boring and bland on screen, no personality, no charm, something that you could never say about Marilyn.

by Anonymousreply 165June 28, 2018 10:33 PM

I must concur with R163. There is simply no comparison in terms of facial/head beauty. Elizabeth Taylor was almost a freak of nature for her beauty. I had read in a biography written about Monty Clift a statement made by one of the men he knew in New York during the early 1950's - a straight man, actually. He was quoted in the book as having said "It was like someone giving you a hard knee to the stomach to see her (Taylor) in person for the first time. She was so beautiful. My God, she was so beautiful." I have also read that as beautiful as she was on screen and in photographs, she was even more beautiful still in the flesh - seeing her in person. R165 - Yes, I suppose so. After all, that's why Marilyn Monroe won two Academy Awards and Elizabeth Taylor didn't win any (sarcasm).

by Anonymousreply 166June 28, 2018 10:36 PM

Liz was like Charlize Theron, an actress who learned on the job, and went from being bland and pretty, to being inconsistent with occasional brilliant performances.

Because while Liz gave some good performances and a few excellent ones, she never became consistently good. From her heyday to her post-heyday to her days of occasionally doing a bit of acting if she felt like it, most of her performances were indifferent. She just wasn't that interesting in the craft of acting.

by Anonymousreply 177June 28, 2018 11:20 PM

Marilyn had quite a different body from Liz. She was always fleshy, even when young. She had good sized thighs and a VERY big behind. In "Some Like It Hot" she was plump due to overeating and pregnancy (she lost the baby shortly after filming wrapped). In "Let's Make Love" she was also heavy. But in her last movie, the uncompleted "Something's Got To Give", she was quite thin. She looked like a pale, thin ghost.

by Anonymousreply 178June 28, 2018 11:21 PM

I know when she was born R177. Photos from a movie set with makeup don't count as we all know how professional makeup can cover problems.

by Anonymousreply 179June 28, 2018 11:23 PM

* at R173. She did not age well. Her beauty was in large part due to the lusciousness of her coloring and form. ET did have a nice heart shaped face and a beautiful nose and a pretty full mouth. But Elizabeth Taylor was too short and ill proportioned to be the great beauty of all time. She lost her looks very young, after Cat on A Hot Tin Roof. She was 27. Of course she remained facially beautiful but she was decidedly bloated and heavy lidded ever after. She had no neck and no calves, very short arms and her facial contours were lovely when very young but she didn't hold onto them for long. She had a nice everything lift and short sobriety and pretty renaissance in the 1980s. But she didn't compare to how women in their forties and fifties can look today. Taylor lived a good life and was very self indulgent. It showed. She's a pisces. They bounce back a lot until they don't. (see Liza)

by Anonymousreply 180June 28, 2018 11:26 PM

r166 I agree especially with the part about her being more beautiful in person. I got to see Liz up close in the early 90s promoting the perfume. She was already in her early sixties but still looked so beautiful in person, her publicity stills are all inferior to the real thing. And no, her head was not large in person, and the big puffed hair still looked good on her. Though even as an old lady her waist was a lot smaller than what's on camera. She was truly a non-photogenic beauty, and the camera did her no justice.Had it not been her brain tumor and crumbled back destroying her physically I think she would really have remained beautiful up to her death.

Marilyn was lovely in print in her twenties. But even at the height of her beauty and fame, there were reports that she could walk around NY city unrecognized -- unless she turn on the MM mannerism, then people noticed. This really means that Marilyn's appearance in person did not make her stand out from the pedestrians. Robert Mitchum I think also mentioned how Marilyn in person did not attract attention the way she was on screen, and that she was super photogenic.

And even on camera, the non-photogenic Liz still looked more beautiful than the photogenic Marilyn when you compare them around the same ages. There is a level of difference between them.

r173 and r174 I recognize from the 1968 film Boom! Taylor was around 36 there.

Marilyn in Something's Got the Give was 35 going into 36, with her birthday taking place during filming. The hardships and drugs showed. Yes, she thinned, but she looked haggard already. Her plucked hairline had further receded, making the long fringe necessary. And I think she had a face lift pulling the outer corners of her face up.

I hate the pictures of Marilyn from Something's Got To Give, and those Bert Sten pictures. She looks so used and broken down, and she's depending on heavy makeup. Yes, she was skinnier than ever before, but her appeal was never skinniness and she looks sickly. I don't think women necessarily look better the thinker they are. Liz looked great much longer, even fatter she had an earth appeal. Marilyn was adorable when young, Liz was gorgeous for life.

Ava Gardner and Vivien Leigh were both far more beautiful and finely formed than Liz. They all shared striking coloring and a certain feline beauty. But Taylor was a fat old cat with a pretty face. The other two were exquisite looking women. All of them, along with Marilyn and Grace are five of the greatest beauties of the screen. Liz grew too hard looking very young. Marilyn never looked hard, but she looked ill in the last two years of her life. Monroe's loveliness was more ephemeral and everlasting. Taylor turned into such a shrill ridiculous hag, but she had some stunning moments over the years, even until pretty late in life. Her helmut hair and severe pull backs did her no favors. She couldn't do chic, and should have resisted trying to look like Audrey Hepburn with udders.

r197 "Her helmut hair and severe pull backs did her no favors. She couldn't do chic, and should have resisted trying to look like Audrey Hepburn with udders."

See that's the thing. Liz was famously known as the worst dressed most beautiful woman. However, a person's aesthetic taste is separate from her physical beauty. Liz was a top beauty whenever she was styled right, even in her notorious frumpy 40s.

r200 Marilyn still looked good in a professional photoshoot at 30, yes. As did Liz around that age. Yet by age 31 in 1958 her true physical decay was revealed in Some Like it Hot. The heavy makeup, dark eyeliner and fringe cannot hide how that face was haggard dry, and that her hairline had receded further.

by Anonymousreply 209June 29, 2018 1:18 AM

Elizabeth was well-known to be a terrible dresser. She had lousy taste in clothing. But she managed to acquire some terrific art over the years. She knew that gaining weight aged her. She was originally told to lose weight for 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf', but insisted she'd look older if she gained weight. Like many brunettes (including me) she started getting random grey hairs early in life. Her performances varied greatly. When she was good, she was amazing. And I remember someone (maybe Liz Smith, maybe not), saying that when she entered a room, it would go quiet, as a hush took over the crowd, dumbfounded at her presence.

I'm not sure why Marilyn figures in this argument, but she had a knack for communicating a sexiness and vulnerability that made both men and women want to shelter her and befriend her. Heck, I'm a Gold Star Gay, but I just feel like being her girlfriend and steering her away from the mean guys when I watch her.

Elizabeth, on the other hand, could have an imperious quality. I admired that, in her, because she was a child star, who had to take charge of her life. She still managed to have a big life, and her children turned out great, which I think is a testament to her. It had nothing to do with her beauty, of course, but we recognize different qualities that make a person beautiful. Elizabeth is one of the only (maybe, the only) celebrities for whom I cried when her death was announced.

by Anonymousreply 211June 29, 2018 1:24 AM

by Anonymousreply 212June 29, 2018 1:33 AM

Liz and Marilyn are frequently compared because they were two of the screen's great beauties. Some say Liz was better looking, some say Marilyn. Actually, both of them had their ups and downs lookwise throughout their careers. But if I had to pick one I'd say Liz was the more classically beautiful. Marilyn, while an attractive girl in her early youth, had to work at becoming a great beauty, bleaching her hair blonde, getting a nose job and a jaw implant. Liz was born with a fabulous face.

by Anonymousreply 213June 29, 2018 1:49 AM

R211, R212, Thank you! I have an admiration for Elizabeth and her legacy that pretty much anyone on DL will mock. I don't care. You notice I call her Elizabeth instead of Liz. That's because she didn't like being called 'Liz': She preferred 'Elizabeth'. Much of her life is available in tell-all books, but she still managed to have a private life. Her children had a few run-ins with the law, but everything seems to be sorted out, and her grandchildren continue to be advocates for people with HIV and AIDS. She was, of course, amazingly beautiful. Bu there was a a lot more thee. She had character, and was a devoted friend.

"Ava Gardner and Vivien Leigh were both far more beautiful and finely formed than Liz. They all shared striking coloring and a certain feline beauty. But Taylor was a fat old cat with a pretty face"

Ava and Viv aged even worse than Liz did

by Anonymousreply 219June 29, 2018 2:54 AM

Oh, R218. Well, no wonder there's such a strong resemblance then.

by Anonymousreply 220June 29, 2018 4:48 AM

Liz did not age well but most Hollywood beauties age did not fare better. They were a boozing, drugging, chain-smoking bunch, many of whom suffering mental problems to boot. Liz was always picked out as aging badly because of her fluctuating weight and bloat, but her face also survived far longer than most. While having bad taste in clothes she did have great taste in cosmetic surgeries. Even in her late 50s, she was simply more natural-seeming than the 50 somethings of today like Sandra Bullock and Nichole Kidman.

Bullock and Kidman didn't start as very beautiful girls and young women.

by Anonymousreply 224June 29, 2018 3:29 PM

I thought bullock and especially kidman were most beautiful actresses of the early nineties?

by Anonymousreply 225June 29, 2018 3:32 PM

What she did was be born with beautiful eyes. Roddy McDowell said that when she was a kid she had double rows of eyelashes.

She was a hairy woman, but when you groomed that shit, she had terrific high contrast coloring - porcelain skin, beautiful nose, beautiful eyes, beautiful lips (today she'd have started in on injections in her teens to make everything even "more"). She had a ton of black hair on her head. Great boobs. Kind of chicken-legged (you can see that in the famous picture of her kissing Burton on a boat during their affair), short legged, pot-belly a bit if she gained any weight. It was really her face and her upper body. I also think she had tremendous energy when she was young (1950s) that translated to her being vibrant, fun. I saw her in a movie with Van Johnson where he started out with her sister but gravitated to her. In most movies it would be because she was the star, but in this movie it was more "Who wouldn't want to hang out with her instead?" Even in a stupid movie like "Elephant Walk" where she replaced Vivien Leigh, it was kind of like, oh girl, you are way too much fun to hang with neurotic Peter Finch in this movie.

I think Cleopatra was the turning point. She was matronly by 33, started moving and talking in a kind of alcoholic bar hound way, got super tan so lost the femininity of her coloring, did about nineteen layers of eyeliner, and her personality changed into this flat thing. I wonder if she was on pills even when working because she completely lost the vibrancy of her studio days.

by Anonymousreply 226June 29, 2018 3:34 PM

I think it's also the 60s stylings. The eye liner and thin harsh brows completely obscured her eyes and brows, which were her best natural features. The teased hair don't compare with thick curls on her. That and the waist cinch was going out of style, and empire waist was in, which is totally wrong for buxom women. That said, there were still moments when she was stunning in the 60s 70s, as evidenced by the pictures above.

One more from 1973's Ash Wednesday. She could do delicate vulnerable even that late in life.

Watching "The V.I.P.s" on Filmstruck this morning. By 1963 she already had gotten portly and jowly. Lots of kids, and more boozing to keep up with Burton were among the causes.

by Anonymousreply 228June 29, 2018 4:12 PM

During the 1960's, a fuller figure woman was more appreciated than in contemporary times. Some men, black men especially, actually prefer some extra weight on women. Kelly Rippa, Sarah Jessica Parker and such would do nothing for some men as far as physical attraction goes. They want softness and lots of curves. Taylor's Mother, Sara, once stated "It's true. Elizabeth has no idea how beautiful she is." Taylor, herself, is quoted as saying "I see better looking women then me walking down the street every day." During her prime, however, she was certainly something to behold.

I don't think she let herself know. I think she was very lonely. Denial can be a very powerful thing.

by Anonymousreply 235June 29, 2018 4:28 PM

We must remember that Liz is a lot older than MJ, and that MJ too was a child to someone of her generation. That and they both were child stars with screwed up childhoods. I think she saw MJ as being this "broken young man" who wanted to relive the childhood he lost. I don't think she was deluded, just that she looked at MJ through a sympathetic POV. She did understood firsthand how a destroyed childhood can stunt a person's growth and deform the mind. I can see Liz seeing MJ as more the victim than the monster the media stories painted him as. I can also see her believing MJ was trying to connect with the boys for companionship instead of sex.

by Anonymousreply 236June 29, 2018 5:21 PM

r232 That was a bad pic of Liz. Nichole Kidman Sandra bullock etc would only look even worse in their sixties. These later generation screen beauties are already deformed by surgeries as they are now.

by Anonymousreply 237June 29, 2018 5:25 PM

I'm the one with the bunches of eyelashes instead of rows. Yes, my mother was stopped many times on the street and women would say, "Jeepers creepers, where'd you get those peepers?" I grew up knowing I had pretty eyes. There's no other word. But it's only a freak accident.

On MM vs, ET, I always like the underdog. So Marilyn's desperate childhood moves me. Liz was always treated like a princess. Don't say anything against my Marilyn!

by Anonymousreply 238June 29, 2018 5:44 PM

Liz was not always treated like a princess. Nor was she priviledged in background like some media story says. The Taylors faked middle class back when they were barely even. When Liz was a child and Sara tried to break her into the child star biz, Sara couldn't even afford a pair of stockings. So, she painted a pair onto little Liz. And Liz paid a heavy price to get where she was. National Velvet's horse broke her back leading to a lifetime of crippling health problems and painkiller addiction. The art Daddy Taylor bought for Liz he bought mostly with her salary too. Liz was a strong woman and a self-made and enduring success so don't say anything against my Liz!

by Anonymousreply 239June 29, 2018 6:33 PM

LOL at the painting stockings on her legs story.

It was the war, there was no silk outside of the parachute plants, and every girl painted a seam down the back of the leg to foster the illusion of silk stockings.

Yes, she fell off of Pi and broke her back, but Marilyn's stepdads broke her vagina.

Interesting quote from Elizabeth on Marilyn from IMDb:

"She seemed to have a kind of unconscious glow about her physical self that was innocent, like a child. When she posed nude, it was 'Gee, I am kind of, you know, sort of dishy,' like she enjoyed it without being egotistical."

THAT'S why I love Marilyn, even her rivals admired her and couldn't hold it against her.

by Anonymousreply 240June 29, 2018 7:37 PM

r240

You "love" Marilyn but decide to pit her against Liz in a Liz thread. Okay.

Supposing tumblr-style oppression points is a greater sign of an actress's worth than acting skills + looks then I guess Marilyn would be remarkable. Though by this ranking scheme someone like Dorothy Dandridge would still have her pwned.

And for someone coming from such a desperate childhood Marilyn sure did CHERISH those precious acting opportunities she SUPPOSEDLY fought so hard for. Even before she she famous she showed up on set hours late and NOT remembering lines, inconveniencing cast and crew both. The infamous 40+ retakes per scene every scene was an unbeatable record in Old Hollywood. Ironic how Marilyn with her SOB roots turned out to be far more unprofessional than all those privileged, had-it-easy princesses of Old Hollywood. Imagine that.

by Anonymousreply 241June 29, 2018 8:17 PM

Oh god I summoned the Dorothy Dandridge troll. Sorry about that.

by Anonymousreply 243June 29, 2018 9:08 PM

Liz was an idiot when it came to Michael Jackson. She said he was "the most unweird" man she'd ever met. They had a bizarre relationship. He worshipped her and wanted to BE her. She enjoyed the adulation and especially the expensive baubles he gave her. Although they were "dear friends" he always had to buy her diamonds to get her to show up with him at award shows and what not. Once he had to ask her to return a necklace that he hadn't actually bought but was only on loan. He had a lawyer make the request. Liz was not pleased.

So she gave him an elephant from India to add to his zoo at Neverland, huh? I think that constituted animal cruelty, to take an animal out of its habitat to be used as a source of amusement for an entitled celebrity. I wonder what happened to it? Probably it died of neglect.

by Anonymousreply 244June 29, 2018 9:20 PM

In a way Liz was correct about MJthough. Given his horrid child star upbringing it was not weird at all that MJ turned out like he did. Since they were friends of course she could try to phrase it so MJ was cast in a positive light.

And the gifts. Please they are multi-millioniares even back in the 80s. Gifting a jewelry is a courtesy gesture when you are that level of rich. And Liz did gift him back an elephant. From what I've read they stayed friends for as long a s MJ lived.

Also, and exotic animals are legit pet-material to the rich back then. Liz was from an era where environmentally friendly was unheard of, and actresses flaunt fur coats in movies.

I love that photo R282. I was born in the 1980s but I know that Elizabeth Taylor lent her name and fame and energy to HIV and AIDS early on and with sincerity. She didn't operate exactly like real people but she knew how to be a real person. She was a grand star who was very well connected and a famously earthy woman who liked gay men (different than loving "her gays") Her contribution to the cause is probably immeasurable. She was far from stupid, but I think it's fair to say she lived a self indulgent and pampered life. Her dedication AND don't fuck with me attitude was pretty damn cool. She had a third act to her public life. She made it count.

No, she divorced him because living the life of a Senator's wife was too boring for her. I don't think she was so stupid that she didn't know what his political leaning were before she married him. She knew he was a Republican. His politics didn't matter to her.

As Republicans go, John Warner was relatively unoffensive. And what "homophobic tool" behaves like this:

In March 2007, after Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Peter Pace spoke out about his views on homosexuality and the military, Sen. Warner said, "I respectfully, but strongly, disagree with the chairman's view that homosexuality is immoral."

The problem was, much like our other favorite La Collins, Taylor thought she had to marry every man she had an affair with, that's what a lot of women thought back then.

Supposedly Mike Todd was the real love of her life. Burton was in second place and he knew it.

Fun fact: Burton eye fucked and then hit on a very beautiful friend of my mother's in Puerto Vallarta back in the Stone Age. She always claimed that she declined but I have my doubts.

by Anonymousreply 307July 3, 2018 7:39 AM

Taylor had mega-fame and extraordinary, legendary beauty. She could have any man she wanted whenever she wanted them. How much of a slut would YOU be if you were in the same position?

by Anonymousreply 308July 3, 2018 11:19 AM

There's a huge difference between a slut and a whore. A slut is someone who enjoys sex with multiple men, all of whom they find attractive. A whore is someone who submit to trolls for either green or career advancement. Had Liz been a whore she would have married Howard Hughes, who offered her a film studio plus a million for her hand. Sara even pressured Liz to marry the tychoon. But nope. Liz stood her ground. All of Liz's husbands were either famously attractive or charismatic. Liz was maybe a slut but never a whore, unlike some others mentioned in this thread.

by Anonymousreply 309July 3, 2018 7:52 PM

When asked about the suitability of the previous husbands of Liz, Burton had this to say about Mike Todd: "Perfect, but he's dead." He did seem like the perfect mate for Liz. Of all her husbands, I think he was the only one who could really handle her.
