Helen HATES singing "Ruby Red Dress (Leave Me Alone)" and refuses to sing it anymore. I guess I can see why becaue it's so fucking repetitive, but it was such a big hit back in the day.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 20, 2018 8:16 PM |
It's a great song, though!!!
Back in the Seventies, although I LOVED hearing Helen's songs on the radio, my Mom would turn them off. She said they were always about insane women (Angie, Delta Dawn).
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 20, 2018 8:18 PM |
Jesus Christ NOT ANOTHER Helen Reddy thread! Do a fucking search!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 20, 2018 8:21 PM |
That's why it says "NEW" R6!
Believe it or not, in 1994, Gap sold items almost identical to what Helen is wearing in her 1972 video for "I Am Woman"!
The striped sweater vest was definitely at Gap in Fall 1994!
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 20, 2018 8:24 PM |
OMG I could not stand her then and I cannot know. Talk about banal.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 20, 2018 8:37 PM |
She's a [WHISPERS] leeeeeeesbian.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 20, 2018 9:12 PM |
I loved her take on disco with “I Can’t Here You No More”
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 20, 2018 9:35 PM |
My ex-husband used to sing "You And Me Against The World" to me...
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 20, 2018 9:38 PM |
I love her.
I wish she would record some new material she still has the voice.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 20, 2018 9:40 PM |
R3 your mom could have been my mom. Very same attitude toward Helen Reddy.
R2 it looks like in OP's video she hated performing it even when it was new.

Really?

That dick and balls at the beginning of that "Angie Baby" video!!!!!!!
That AIRED on 'Carol Burnett' in 1974??????????
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 21, 2018 1:06 AM |
That nasal monotone voice. That horrible behavior with her husband Jeff "Mr. helen Reddy" Wald. A veritable bad acid flashback from the 70s.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 21, 2018 1:16 AM |
I have looked everywhere for a live performance (not that cartoon) she did on Carol Burnett show. She was front center stage and behind her was a set of 4 rooms in a house. People acted out various scenes in the rooms to the lyrics. I often think it was the nascent birth of MTV in which a song was a accompanied by the singer and action going on in scene.

Why does Helen seem so happy when Leave Me Alone is such a sad song?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 21, 2018 1:36 AM |
I saw her in concert in 1973.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 21, 2018 1:43 AM |
If my memory serves me, Helen performed her Candle on The Water for the Oscars. She started singing, and it appears either she or the orchestra started wrong. She stopped, apologized, and they started the song over. I vaguely remember, and it could of been another award show. Candle in the Water is one of my personal faves. Her acting in Pete's Dragon, not so much.

When it comes to superfluous lyrics, it's hard to top "Sometimes sitting down."
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 21, 2018 7:39 PM |
Ruby Red Dress. Not a favorite, in fact I was not a fan of the crazy lady songs.

That song brings me back.. to high school.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 10, 2018 12:36 AM |
I just assumed, as a child of the 70s, that she belonged in the same club as Kristy McNichol and Jodie Foster.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 10, 2018 12:37 AM |
This May 1975 version of "Angie Baby" features some groovy facial expressions and movements by Helen.

Like Karen Carpenter, Helen has that easy, effortless voice.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 10, 2018 12:47 AM |
I never get tired of this one - great arrangement that sounded amazing on my Dad's Marantz stereo. Takes me right back....

I haven't heard these songs in ages.. thanks for posting! Really takes me back..

02/02/1973 "I AM WOMAN"!
The first episode of 'The Midnight Special'!
by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 10, 2018 12:59 AM |
She seems like she is very intelligent.
I wonder what happened to her psycho husband Jeff Wald?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 10, 2018 1:04 AM |
April 9, 1976 - Helen once again is hosting 'The Midnight Special.' Here she introduces Fleetwood Mac, with Stevie Nicks performing an electrifying version of her classic song, "Rhiannon"!
Listen to how Helen says "debuted"!
by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 10, 2018 1:08 AM |
R35, Love that song.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 10, 2018 1:11 AM |
R5, but did Reddy ever appear on a Gap In-Store playlist? Inquiring minds need to know
by Anonymous | reply 42 | July 10, 2018 1:31 AM |
I never could stand her songs.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | July 10, 2018 1:35 AM |
R42 Not from 1992 to 2006, she did not.
Gap started using music services in the Early 1970s, so I'm sure Helen was on one of those.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 10, 2018 1:36 AM |

When I hear the dress song, I substitute the words “eat my asshole” for “leave me alone”.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 2, 2018 10:33 PM |
What a horrible singer.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 2, 2018 11:31 PM |
her husband was the biggest coke dealer in LA and I always wondered if that was the reason for her success because she was average looking and an average singer and her material was bland - I believe he was sent to prison. there's a recent clip of her in Vegas doing "Angie Baby" and she can't remember the lyrics so she calls the songwriter up on stage and they finish the song together. He's the late Alan O'Day
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 2, 2018 11:40 PM |
Sad.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | December 2, 2018 11:42 PM |
Yes, the millions of people who bought Helen Reddy's albums and singles did so because of her cocaine-dealing husband.
You wondered correctly. No more wondering for you.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 2, 2018 11:43 PM |
I like Angie Baby. I have some of her shit downloaded. Guilty pleasure.

Helen sang "Delta Dawn" with emotion in her voice, unlike TT's faux hick vocals.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 2, 2018 11:55 PM |
R35 What the FUCK is she singing? She'll wake the sun up giving him a wind cup?
What the fuck does that mean?
It sounds like Michfest poetry.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 3, 2018 12:05 AM |
R60 And Helen took Delta Dawn to #1
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 3, 2018 12:23 AM |
I enjoy her vocalizations on “Brazzle Dazzle Day”
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 3, 2018 12:25 AM |
Strange tone to her voice. Odd
by Anonymous | reply 64 | December 3, 2018 12:34 AM |
R53, I don't think he was buying the stuff to sell. He was a huge consumer of coke. He also was quite dangerous.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | December 4, 2018 12:34 AM |
She doesn’t do “No Sad Song” any more?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | December 4, 2018 3:00 AM |
R9 Ex huh? So I guess in the end it was not you and me against the world and just me against the world?
by Anonymous | reply 67 | December 4, 2018 3:53 AM |
No, r67. You and me against the world was about her daughter and her. Helen came to the U.S. With her three year old daughter and something like $250 in her pocket.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | December 5, 2018 2:48 PM |
r2
Yeah who would sing such a repetitive song?
by Anonymous | reply 69 | December 5, 2018 2:59 PM |
r61 I love Helen's version of Peaceful, but she changed the lyrics and destroyed the whole meaning of the song
The original lyrics are
I had a son, while on the run, and his love brought a tear to my eye
And somehow I know, if he had lived to grow, he'd have been a really nice guy, oh my
She changed it to
And maybe someday he'll up and say "We had a pretty nice time"
The whole song is about a man who is in a cemetery and instead of being upset, he's fine and peaceful about his son's death. By changing that one line, she made it sound like the aftermath of an all night booze up.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | December 5, 2018 3:05 PM |
Towards the radio he's bound
Never to be found...
by Anonymous | reply 71 | July 2, 2021 11:57 PM |
Helen had a nice relaxing, not great, voice. She had 3 number 1 songs: I Am Woman, Delta Dawn, and Angie Baby. People forget that the song that put her on the map was I Don't Know How To Love Him. Her version and Yvonne Elliman's were on the charts at the same time.
I remember once she guest hosted the Tonight Show when Johnny Carson was off. Although her singing was fine, she was the worst guest host ever. She did not get one laugh the entire 90 minutes. I'm not exaggerating...not one. It was painful to watch.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | July 3, 2021 1:11 AM |
I'm sad she's gone.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | July 4, 2021 2:40 PM |
Newsday’s Saturday crossword puzzle (a much tougher puzzle than the Saturday Times, btw, had this clue: “Anthem turning 50 next year”. I figured it out that it was “I Am Woman”.
