Raggedy Man (Maybe Eric Robert’s best too)

Too many great ones to choose from (Badlands, Carrie, 3 Women, Coal Miner's Daughter, Missing, Raggedy Man, Crimes of the Heart, 'night Mother, The Straight Story, In the Bedroom).

There's a great, underrated film from 1990 called The Long Walk Home. It's Sissy and Whoopi as a wealthy white Southern woman and her black housekeeper/nanny, set in Alabama in 1955 (about 5-10 years before the time The Help was set). It's really well done--everyone is great in it--and it doesn't sugarcoat how blatant the racism was. Sissy is able to show her character's arc in a very nuanced way and I am always fascinated by her when I watch it (I've seen it multiple times).

Came out 19 years before The Help novel was published (just sayin').

Sissy is good in al the above-mentioned movies. But Carrie is iconic!!

R9 agree. Saw it in the theatre with my mom. Limited release not out long.

Whoopi was very good too though I know we hate her around here...

She is good in Carrie, but I love genre films like that anyway so it is hard to separate that from her performance.

But with CMD...I despise country music and am not a LL fan. And yet that movie still reels me in.

That is the mark of a stellar performance.

Another vote for "Raggedy Man"...featuring a young pre-"ET" Henry Thomas.

My SECOND favorite Sissy performance was Crimes of the Heart. She rarely got to show a comic side...... and in a smaller role, she was great as Richard Farnsworth's mentally-challenged daughter in The Straight Story.

Saw her a year or two ago in Bloodline on Netflix. That nose is nightmare-inducing.

I can't choose between "Badlands" and "Carrie"; it's like trying to chooses between "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Chinatown" for Dunaway. Equally great performances!

That really is a jaw-dropping filmography posted at R8. Good-to-great performances, every one.

I love her and Piper Laurie as sisters in The Grass Harp.
