Hall must elect Janet

Two words can describe the success of Elvis Presley and Madonna — white privilege. Both stars, especially Madonna, don’t have any real type of musical talent. They just know how to market themselves. Elvis marketed himself by ripping off black music and culture. Madonna marketed herself by ripping off gay black culture and not giving back. They should not be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Then, there is Janet Jackson — a major musical talent who created the template for women in the music business. Before Janet, there was no such thing as a woman in control of her career. Before Janet, a woman owning her own sexuality was considered taboo. Janet simply created the modern day concert that so many performers copy. But she’s not in the RRHOF? Why?Cause she’s black! It’s really frustrating — there is one white woman who has been praised by the masses for her sexual exploration, but Janet has been condemned just for accidental revealing of a breast,” Jimmy Jam, one of Janet’s famous co-producers, tells us. (Terry Lewis didn’t want to be interviewed for this.) Of course, he’s talking about Madonna without actually naming her. Madonna, if you remember, kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, just five months before Janet’s breast reveal at the Super Bowl. The white girls were all praised. But the black girl was boycotted everywhere. Double standards? You bet!

by Anonymousreply 133June 27, 2018 11:25 PM

To make things worse, Madonna and Elvis never wrote any of their own songs. In contrast, Janet Jackson has written most of the music and lyrics to every one of her hits. And she’s had more notable hits than Madonna or Elvis Presley. She has also been a bigger influence on people of different cultures and races. Janet’s Rhythm Nation album, for example, is seen by many civil rights activists as the album that broke all racial barriers in the music industry. Madonna and Elvis had some notable albums, but neither artist risked singing about social issues. Madonna exploited those with AIDS while Janet sang “Together Again” as a tribute to all her friends lost from the disease. She (along with Lady Gaga) are the gay icons of our time. Not Madonna.

We are asking that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame delete Elvis and Madonna from their roster and replace them with Janet Jackson. If the RRHOF doesn’t, we demand that Madonna opt out and ask to be replaced by Janet. It would be a great way of using her white privilege to help out a minority singer who has been repressed by the industry for so long. Janet Jackson is simply one of the most talented musicians of all-time and deserves respect, not repression.

Thanks to columnists Touré and Todd “Stereo” Williams for contributing to this article.

Elvis Presley could sing and in many different moods. He was a gifted singer. He was a good live stage performer, as well. Madonna, well, let's just say she sang, and for a couple years in the beginning, she sang her heart out. Not a gifted singer, but.

Janet CAN NOT SING.

[quote]To make things worse, Madonna and Elvis never wrote any of their own songs.

And yet Madonna is at #56 among Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time:

[quote]56 - Madonna. Before she was a star, Madonna was a songwriter with a sharp ear for a hook and a lyrical catchphrase, playing tracks like "Lucky Star" for record companies in the hope of scoring a contract. Her earliest hits honed the electro beats coming out of the New York club scene into universal radio gold. But songs like her greatest statement, "Like a Prayer," can also summon an anthemic power to rival Springsteen or U2. Madonna has enlisted numerous collaborators en route to selling more than 300 million albums — she started working with longtime writing partner Patrick Leonard after he brought her "Live to Tell" in 1986, and from Shep Pettibone and William Orbit in the Nineties through Diplo, Avicii and Kanye West on 2015's Rebel Heart, she's worked successfully with producers across many genres. Through it all, her songs have been consistently stamped with her own sensibility and inflected with autobiographical detail. "She grew up on Joni Mitchell and Motown and. . . embodies the best of both worlds," says Rick Nowells, who co-wrote with Madonna on 1998's Ray of Light. "She is a wonderful confessional songwriter, as well as being a superb hit chorus pop writer."

Revisionist bullshit. Since her debut to the present, Madonna has been called slut, tramp, whore, cunt... every name you can throw at a woman who flouts society's standards. She has been threatened with excommunication. She has been condemned by conservative groups. She has suffered career backlash after the Sex book, etc. It hasn't exactly been smooth sailing for Madge. Janet's mistake was revealing her breast on network television during a big All-American event. Much different than showing tit in books and magazines. But so what? Like Madonna, Janet has endured the slings and arrows and continues to have fans. I don't understand the need to pit one against the other, and demean or diminish one's accomplishments in order to praise the other. It's pointless and puerile.

by Anonymousreply 13June 20, 2018 1:36 AM

R12 how is that possible if Madonna never wrote a single song? And if Madonna is #56 where is Janet? I'll bet she's in the top 10.

Yeah, OP, Janet can be inducted after Kate Bush, who is infinitely more talented, has always written her own music, without needing the assistance of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, produces her own albums, and has been a role model for women in music since the late 70s.

I don't dislike Janet, but Kate Bush is on an entirely different level.

by Anonymousreply 17June 20, 2018 1:43 AM

OP or Janet, girl, please don’t forget to take your medications.

by Anonymousreply 18June 20, 2018 1:49 AM

Does the RNRHOF take into consideration ticket sales and cancellations? Does playing State Fairs help or hurt the nomination process?

by Anonymousreply 19June 20, 2018 1:53 AM

The CEO of the Rock Hall even thinks Janet should be in. Her credentials and influence qualify her to have been a shoo-in her first year of eligibility. The rock hall has always slighted black women, but Janet not being in yet is utterly ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 20June 20, 2018 1:56 AM

I'm sure he says that about every nominee. Is he going to say that someone nominated shouldn't be? Yeah, I don't think so.

Yassssssss! We need a Katebot!

by Anonymousreply 24June 20, 2018 2:14 AM

OP, wth are you talking about? A lot of what you said is just made up garbage. MADONNA is widely considered the first woman to have complete control of her career, not Janet. Madonna is the world's biggest selling female artist and in the 80s, she inspired tons of imitators, none of whom survived the 80s. The music industry kept trying to make new Madonna's and failed. Janet is very influential but in comparison to Madonna, she will always be in 2nd chair.

by Anonymousreply 25June 20, 2018 2:17 AM

Janet will never get in, for really having only one great album (RN), she can't or won't sing live, didn't her boyfriend write a lot of her songs and never received credit or something? Then the Superbowl thing, and she still pretends it was an accident?

Though based just on her body of work alone, she probably should be in, but then again the RNR hall of fame looks at the whole picture. But then again, who really cares about it anyway?

by Anonymousreply 26June 20, 2018 2:22 AM

And writers of the article/OP, seriously, more memorable hits than Madonna or Elvis? You're nuts. There is a reason The Immaculate Collection is the biggest selling compilation album by a solo artist and Design of a Decade isn't. The majority of the songs on The Immaculate Collection are still played on the radio and remembered today. And regarding "racism" about Janet's nipple slip and Madonna getting away with things. You clearly don't remember the SEX book. After that, Madonna's career was (rightfully) on life support until Ray of Light. She toned down her sexual image considerably after that. Why else would she follow up Erotica with a ton of (mostly forgettable) ballads. The fact that Janet was dumb enough to flash her nipple at a family event isn't Madonna's problem Not to mention--did the authors forget to note that Janet was very sexual starting from around 1993 onwards? There was no backlash against her until she showed poor planning and flashed her nip. Whoever wrote this article is just trolling and forgot to mention that Madonna DID co-write most of her hits, at least officially. Before Madonna and Michael Jackson, it was not common for pop stars to co-write their hits, it was more common to have a song-writer give you material. Really, the author of this article (and by extension, OP) are like those morons who were pissed when Adele won the Grammy award this year. Get over it. If you care that much about the Rock and Roll hall of fame/the Grammy's you need a life (and you probably have bad taste in music).

by Anonymousreply 30June 20, 2018 2:26 AM

R29, both the OP and the writer's of the article are trolling. They are no different from those cry babies who got mad when Adele won Album of the Year and requested she HAND OVER the award to Beyonce....or, going years back, those people who thought Kanye was justified in being an ass to Taylor Swift at the VMAs (and I can't stand Taylor).

by Anonymousreply 31June 20, 2018 2:28 AM

Also, Whitney and Michael Jackson broke down racial barriers FAR earlier than Janet (not to mention Donna Summer). When will people realize Janet did not have a big impact outside of the United States? Unlike Whitney, Madonna, Mariah and Celine, she is only really popular in the United States. She never had a single album sell more than 20 million copies globally. Madonna and Celine have three albums that did while Whitney and Mariah have two. So much for "shattering barriers" worldwide.

Janet’s obviously had more influence than Madonna as a whole. Every hot artist today continues to name check Janet as an influence, and her work is seen in just about everything they do. Britney worships her, Bruno loves her and covers her music, as have Kelly Clarkson and Robyn, Beyonce has given Janet props several times and has looked up to her since she was a kid, Rihanna loves her and has copied Janet’s looks and stage shows on occasion, Gaga has called her a genius, Usher loves her, Ciara idolizes her, as does Kelly Rowland, J-Lo got into the business because of her, the late Aaliyah idolized her as well, P!nk, TLC, Backstreet and NSync, the list goes on and on...

by Anonymousreply 38June 20, 2018 5:39 PM

I volunteer to be Katebot AND Steviebot.

by Anonymousreply 39June 20, 2018 5:51 PM

R38 people name check her because she proved you didn’t need a good voice or song writing ability to get radio hits and make dumb people like you stans.

by Anonymousreply 40June 20, 2018 5:58 PM

R40, agreed. Britney, Pink, Beyonce, Rihanna, etc. have also name dropped Madonna at times so it's not like Madonna doesn't have influence. Not to mention, in the 80s, TONS of artists were created by record companies in the same mold as Madonna and they all failed.

R37, you're right, I should have included Prince in that comment.

by Anonymousreply 41June 20, 2018 6:10 PM

Janet is more influential than Madonna? Fuck off. From which planet? Read and comprehend R33 than we talk.

She’s nobody outside of US. And in US and the world call madonna queen of Pop for a reason. Her influence is massive and unmatched by any artists. Only Michael can rival her on that aspect.

Jan fans are so thick and idiotic. Well blacks generally are not bright so it shouldn’t come as a surprise

Madonna can't touch this!

by Anonymousreply 45June 20, 2018 6:59 PM

R42, your statement was great until you added the part about black people. Madonna is sooo much more important to music as a whole. In terms of solo artists, only Elvis and Michael Jackson are as iconic as she is (and I say this as someone who wants ISIS to hack her instagram account and destroy it in the process). And really, those people going on and on and on about how Rhythm Nation was such a brilliant concept album. How??? The issues on the album are basically shallow things beauty pageant types get from the local news. It's not like Janet proved that she was an international affairs reporter with the album! I like the album but lets not pretend her album is more significant than it is. The best songs on the album are the non-issue related tracks.

by Anonymousreply 46June 20, 2018 7:03 PM

R42 keep my name out of your fat grubby fingers racist cunt

by Anonymousreply 47June 20, 2018 7:08 PM

The R&R Hall is a joke. Janet should definitely be admitted.

Can she fill the venue for the induction would be my question. Are tickets free?

by Anonymousreply 50June 21, 2018 12:56 AM

I know that there is a Janet Jackson fanatic on these boards but I don’t even know where to begin in terms of correcting the history referenced here. I always assumed the Janet Jackson fan was older but the history stated is so off here that I’m going to guess he is under 30

by Anonymousreply 51June 21, 2018 12:59 AM

R50, what the fuck are you talking about? She doesn't give away free tickets.

by Anonymousreply 52June 21, 2018 1:00 AM

No, R51, it just has a pathological need to lie.

by Anonymousreply 53June 21, 2018 1:01 AM

Fuck yes. Janet is more influential than Madonna, and to hell with anyone who thinks otherwise. In every decade since she became a superstar, there have been gobs of artists who have shown and told how much she’s influenced them. In the ‘80s, after CONTROL hit, every record company wanted to create the next dance-pop diva of color (i.e. the next Janet), which is why we got a rapid succession of solo albums from Jody Watley, Pebbles, Nia Peeples, Vanessa Williams, Paula Abdul, Karyn White, etc. Hell, after Janet performed in videos and onstage wearing that headset mic, everyone from Madonna to Bobby Brown was seen sporting one onstage.

And then the ‘90s came, and artists like TLC and Salt N Pepa had tomboy-to-sex siren transformations similar to Janet’s legendary 1993 coming-into-her-womanhood transformation, a period which begat what is arguably THE most famous and mimicked photo of a female pop star of all with Janet’s 1993 Rolling Stone cover.

In the new millennium, a veritable A to Z list of young artists, male and female, patterned their images and careers after the blueprint that JANET helped to create. Rock artists have given her props and wanted to work with her (Tommy Lee, Lemmy Kilmister), as have pop, R&B and hip hop artists at home and abroad, a testament to the reason she remains the only artist to ever be nominated in the diverse Grammy categories of Rock, Pop, R&B, Dance and Hip Hop. She was the first artist to do so many things in the industry that I would be here forever naming them, suffice it to say some of them being: Janet was the first woman to have five consecutive #1 albums on the Billboard 200, the first woman to have a single debut in the Hot 100 top 10, and the only artist with seven Top 5 singles from one album, the first woman to sweep an awards show, the only singer/actor whose first three films topped the US box office...

As for the dolt upthread who dared question RHYTHM NATION’s current relevancy, get a fucking clue. All one has to do is listen to songs like “The Knowledge” and “Livin’ in a World (They Didn’t Make)” to realize that the album’s subject matter (suicide, illiteracy, racism, mass public shootings) are more relevant today than they were when the album was released. She is a perennial icon whose hit song “Nasty” incited a feminist movement in the last presidential election without her even having a hand in it. And for the other noob who insists that Janet never made an impact outside of the US—YouTube and Google are your friends, but I’m mighty afraid you’d be disappointed that your frivolous little theory would be debunked in a heartbeat. Janet has sold out arenas and stadiums on 6 of the 7 continents. She has Russian fan clubs, a big following in The Netherlands, a strong German fanbase, a large following in Africa, South America and Australia, a HUGE Asian following, and a big following in the UK. So get a clue. Read an article. Watch any one of the myriad of YT videos showing just how strong Janet’s following is overseas. And think sink into the knowledge that you’ve been irrefutably, undoubtedly proven wrong.

by Anonymousreply 54June 21, 2018 1:02 AM

I'm sorry but who is this? I've never heard of her.

by Anonymousreply 55June 21, 2018 1:03 AM

Hey OP— The first five sentences of paragraph two Are all incorrect. The idea that she might not have been inducted because of the Super Bowl performance is an opinion so I guess you get away with sentence number six But everything that came before that in the paragraph is factually wrong

by Anonymousreply 56June 21, 2018 1:04 AM

Its talking to itself again.

by Anonymousreply 57June 21, 2018 1:05 AM

Hasn't the time for her to be inducted kind of passed? Others of her generation were inducted at least a decade ago. Why didn't she and her team push for an induction at that time?

by Anonymousreply 58June 21, 2018 1:05 AM

Welcome to planet Earth R55.

by Anonymousreply 59June 21, 2018 1:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 60June 21, 2018 1:10 AM

by Anonymousreply 61June 21, 2018 1:10 AM

^You looked up Monica?

by Anonymousreply 62June 21, 2018 1:12 AM

R54, I'm sure she does have fan clubs in other countries--so what? I'm sure Toni Braxton still has fan clubs in other countries todays. That doesn't mean shit. The sales of Madonna's best selling albums and singles SLAUGHTER that of Janet's. It's a fact. Globally, Janet has never been much of a seller. In terms of global popularity, she never was in the same league as Madonna, Whitney, Celine and Mariah. Anyone who says otherwise is just dishonest and going off their "feelings".

OP - The way that you string together facts, opinions, carefully sliced statistics, and incredibly loose connections to pop culture history Is impressive.

She probably belongs in the Hall of Fame because why not? She is one of the top selling female artists ever and had a wildly impressive career. The music was good too.

There’s nothing wrong with being a super fan. But I think what happens is you wildly overstate her historical importance and you overestimate her impact on pop-culture/music business and then you end up getting a lot of pushback on these boards. By constantly asserting that she is somehow the number one anything you end up inspiring a lot of disagreement instead of appreciation for all of her great music and career accomplishments.

If you say she was the first person to ever wear a head microphone, I’ll believe you but Madonna didn’t wear one because Janet did, she wore one because it was a new available technology. And it’s not like Janet invented the microphone in the lab somewhere. And it’s cool that her first three movies were number one at the US box office, but I’m pretty sure the nutty Professor 2 Would have Been a blockbuster without her. Again, Your asserting a lot of stuff that is completely irrelevant.

TLDR: If you just stopped arguing that she was the number one female artist of her time, you probably would inspire more conversations that appreciate her career and musical contributions

Not to be the Katebot R68, but it is pretty well documented that Kate Bush's use of a headset microphone during her Tour of Life was considered groundbreaking. Her sound guy created the prototype using a wire hanger.

Again, not trying to bash Janet as I love some of her music, and I liked her on Fame when I was in junior high.

by Anonymousreply 69June 21, 2018 12:28 PM

I think OP is having a little fun spoofing JanBot, because this thread is even more ridiculous than the nonsense JanBot usually posts.

by Anonymousreply 70June 21, 2018 12:45 PM

to compare her and madge in same breath is bozo....

she more in toni braxtons category....couple of hits. done.

WTF WITH HER FACE?????

by Anonymousreply 71June 21, 2018 1:18 PM

Good god she is dumb as fuk

seen her bein interviewed?????

by Anonymousreply 72June 21, 2018 1:19 PM

Elvis was a very good singer, and if you like that type, good-looking, too. Madonna, totally uninteresting and a product of the 1980s, shittiest decade ever (1970s being the darkest).

by Anonymousreply 73June 21, 2018 1:22 PM

[quote]Before Janet, there was no such thing as a woman in control of her career.

I think Dolly Parton has had control of her career for a long time. And with her always wearing costumes that emphasized her cleavage, I don't think she worried too much about her sexuality.

I think Carole King has had control of her career. Probably Joni Mitchell as well. Surely, Bette Midler. Nobody pushes Aretha Franklin around.

You sure about that?

Jane Jacket will never be forgotten.

by Anonymousreply 76June 21, 2018 3:46 PM

Two words can describe the success of Janet Jackson: Nepotism & Lip-syncing.

by Anonymousreply 77June 21, 2018 3:48 PM

Janet Jackson should not be in the RRHOF before Kate Bush.

Out on the wiley, windy moors with you, OP!

by Anonymousreply 78June 21, 2018 4:09 PM

And then he said to her, "She should be in there." And then she said, "You tell such lies." Well, who's to say who gets through? Who's to say who lives or dies? No,no, no, no, no, he says. Walk on, baby. Just keep walking. Oooh, Rhiannon. She does two things . . .lip-synch and dance. . oooh.. .Janet. . ..

by Anonymousreply 79June 21, 2018 4:17 PM

Princess of Pork Rinds...

by Anonymousreply 80June 21, 2018 4:42 PM

Well Janet Jackson will make it before long forgotten George Michael. Hell Taylor, Janet, Rihanna and Beyoncé will get in before George Michael and I'll beat my savings on that.

by Anonymousreply 81June 21, 2018 4:53 PM

And Rihanna and Beyonce will get in before Janet!!!

by Anonymousreply 82June 21, 2018 5:17 PM

How can the students get in before the teacher? FALSE!

by Anonymousreply 83June 21, 2018 5:24 PM

To compare Toni Braxton to Janet is ludicrous and obvious troll bait. Toni is lovely and has cultivated a wonderful and long career as an R&B songstress, but Janet Jackson is a pop icon. She’s been nominated for an Oscar, starred in #1 movies, has a fan base that transcends race, culture and age, has had timeless styles, photos, songs and music videos over a 40 plus year career, has dabbled in just about every form of media. There IS no comparison. They are friends, however.

Yes, Toni can sing.

by Anonymousreply 86June 21, 2018 5:56 PM

[quote]To compare Toni Braxton to Janet is ludicrous

Agreed. Toni sings original songs...not just new lyrics laid on top of older, popular songs by Joni Mitchell, The Supremes, Sly & The Family Stone, James Brown, Carly Simon, America, Glow....

by Anonymousreply 87June 21, 2018 6:24 PM

[R87] And yet we did this and were inducted into The Songwriters Hall of Fame . Before Prince and George Michael the committee chose us, so there's hope for Janet.

Janet is an icon. Toni is a very successful R&B singer. There’s a difference.

by Anonymousreply 89June 21, 2018 10:44 PM

[quote]How can the students get in before the teacher? FALSE!

Easy, when they don't play State Fairs, let alone bankrupt them. When they aren't forced to degrade themselves for $9.99/ticket. When they actually sell records and have an International following....

Is that the end? Edit!

by Anonymousreply 90June 21, 2018 10:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 93June 21, 2018 11:03 PM

Janet is def an icon and shouldn’t be compared to Toni. Toni can sing, so do millions out there. Toni is nowhere near Janet’s level and it’s a fact. You can say the same when Janet is compared against Madonna. She’s nobody when the queen of pop is around.

by Anonymousreply 94June 22, 2018 3:36 AM

by Anonymousreply 102June 23, 2018 12:48 AM

You won't get Janet elected by dragging other performers. Elvis was a gifted singer in a variety of genres. Madonna doesn't have the greatest voice, but it's still her voice (not stunt singers) and she's helping write her songs, working with the photographers and videographers she chooses, and helping choreograph her act. Janet is a flimsy act with that whisper-coo voice and those cheerleader dance moves that Paula Abdul taught her. I won't bother arguing, since you live inside your own fantasy world. BTW, I don't hate Janet, not one tiny bit. I just don't think she's special.

by Anonymousreply 103June 23, 2018 12:48 AM

BTW, We always here how weak Madonna's voice. It really isn't, but the key in which she sings makes it difficult for her to achieve much power. Try listening to 'Rescue Me', and see how strong her voice can be. And yes, that's her voice, not a double.

Funny you mention Madonna’s cultural appropriation, OP. There was a woman on my FB page the other day taking about how Madge (as she called her) stole vogueing from the black underground balls and pageants and never gave credit. Heck, Jody Watley was vogueing and whacking in videos before Madonna was.

Raven Symone is a Janet stan. She was beside herself and nervous backstage at the awards tonight.

I call Janet's music, "Experiment IV" because it's the sound that can kill someone from a distance.

by Anonymousreply 109June 23, 2018 2:43 AM

she would never be elected cause she is just the sister of someone bigger anda a real talent,....and gaga is not a real gay icon. she is just a fraud

by Anonymousreply 110June 24, 2018 4:02 PM

I think Elvis actually had some natural musicality there. Madonna is a product of the times. She had a knack for picking the right songs and selling it to the masses. And she sold sex dam well. She might not be a natural vocalist but her pop songs had infectious melodies.

by Anonymousreply 111June 24, 2018 4:12 PM

Oh do fuck off, OP. Your stupidity is embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 112June 24, 2018 4:14 PM

I think Janet is talented in a way and was highly influential for today's pop/R&B singers but come on if she was not MJ's sister would we have ever heard of whispercoo?

by Anonymousreply 113June 24, 2018 4:28 PM

Madge kissed two women on cable tv. Whispercoo flashed her tittie during the superbowl on primetime television. Hardly the same comparison. And are you saying lesbianism is the same as public nudity.

by Anonymousreply 114June 24, 2018 4:30 PM

No one will ever forget Jane Jacket!

by Anonymousreply 115June 24, 2018 4:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 116June 24, 2018 4:54 PM

R116, exactly. When Madonna isn't nervous, she actually sounds good live. Can Janet even sing live without lip syncing? I say that as someone who likes her (bu thinks she will always be second to Madonna).

by Anonymousreply 117June 24, 2018 5:25 PM

Ms. Jackson doesn't sing. She whispers. Please get it right. and she might grunt if she's nasty.

by Anonymousreply 118June 24, 2018 5:26 PM

R10, Prince is in the RRHOF

by Anonymousreply 119June 24, 2018 6:02 PM

To be honest, Donna Summers really deserves the credit for crafting the sexy female personna that today's popstars emulate. Madge just happen to come out at the right time, with the explosion of music videos.

by Anonymousreply 120June 24, 2018 6:06 PM

R!20, I'm not sure about that. Donna Summer hated her sexy image and eventually became "born again". Madonna, on the other hand, embraced the sexual image, and ran with it. She marketed herself that way. Unlike Donna who was more put into the role due to "love to love you baby".

by Anonymousreply 121June 24, 2018 6:17 PM
