Splash was Daryl Hannah's big break, but she basically wanders around New York like a lost Amish toddler.
She was miscast and embarrassingly bad in Steel Magnolias.
Why do think she is still so well-known and cast in such prominent roles?

There are a lot of people in the rock world who groaned when she started dating Neil Young. She's considered somewhat of a black widow.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 19, 2018 5:01 AM |
Has she been in anything since Kill Bill?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 19, 2018 5:02 AM |
She is a cult or fetish actress and there are enough arty farty cineastes that hire her.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 19, 2018 5:04 AM |
"As a child, she was so shy she was diagnosed as borderline autistic. Even today, she says she likes to just sit in a corner and just observe people."
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 19, 2018 5:04 AM |
She had her 15 minutes with "Splash" and then soon drowned in a sea of schlock.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 19, 2018 5:04 AM |
She was in Sense8....a small part, but still.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 19, 2018 5:05 AM |
Splash was huge.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 19, 2018 5:05 AM |
Sense8 was terrible.

"Daryl Hannah is my favorite actress"
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 19, 2018 5:06 AM |
She is not so "well-known."
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 19, 2018 5:09 AM |
She has had a few iconic roles - Splash, Blade Runner, Kill Bill. And she is very attractive. That is enough to keep her career going.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 19, 2018 5:09 AM |
John Candy was so hilarious in "Splash": he stole that movie from Hannah & Hanks.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 19, 2018 5:11 AM |
She's always been mystifyingly around.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 19, 2018 5:12 AM |
she coasted on her looks, and has connections to the biz.
untalented, she wanders yes blithely thru roles...
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 19, 2018 5:19 AM |
She comes from money....
Has that aloof dull snobbery that that entails.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 19, 2018 5:20 AM |
She opened up about her autism a few years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 19, 2018 5:22 AM |
Yes she's autistic but when will Darryl come clean about being born a man? That's a man Maury.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 19, 2018 5:23 AM |
They wanted me for "Splash" but I chose "Out of Africa" instead, and waited decades to work with Tom in the more serious and penetrating "The Post". Daryl was cute, but was totally unable to convey the schizoid torment inherent in a mermaid's psyche.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 19, 2018 5:26 AM |
[quote]Why do think she is still so well-known and cast in such prominent roles?
What prominent roles?
I don't know how much family money went to Daryl Hannah (her mother's second marriage was to a wealthy man), but her half sister Tanya Wexler is definitely loaded.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 19, 2018 5:26 AM |
Seriously though, was there a moment in Splash or Steel Magnolias that wasn't amateurish?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 19, 2018 5:27 AM |
Not that she had that much to do in Blade Runner but her part in it was terrific. And to this day, when I blunt-cut some of my ornamental grasses I consider that I’m giving them the Pru treatment.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 19, 2018 5:30 AM |
R20 I liked her in both. And also in "Legal Eagles"!
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 19, 2018 5:30 AM |
Summer Lovers was the first time I saw her.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 19, 2018 5:31 AM |
R1 you left out the part about her dating Neil Young while he was married and helping to break up an almost 40 year marriage.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 19, 2018 5:33 AM |
She was acceptable in Splash with the help of Tom Hanks, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, but her performance in Steel Magnolias was a joke.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 19, 2018 5:33 AM |
Dating JFK Jr. bought her at least a decade of fame.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 19, 2018 5:35 AM |
she was more famous when she was JFK jr. girlfriend. She should have married him
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 19, 2018 5:35 AM |
I love Reckless. Aidan Quinn was sex on a stick in that. And Hannah was good to as the vapid white girl tempted by him.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 19, 2018 5:44 AM |
For an actress of limited ability, she has appeared in a surprising number of distinguished films and worked with some great directors. In addition to those already mentioned:
The Fury
Roxanne
Wall Street
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Granted, a couple of these were cameos and she was miscast in Wall Street, but it's a more interesting filmography than, say, Brie Larson's.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 19, 2018 5:44 AM |
She was wonderful in Footloose.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 19, 2018 5:47 AM |
R28 I remember dancing like that as a teen at Mudd Club
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 19, 2018 5:49 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 19, 2018 5:49 AM |
Thing is she wasn’t even particularly pretty - perfect example of someone who was considered so only because she was tall and blonde.
When I saw her sister Paige in the movie Shag - who isn’t attractive at all - you could see they both had the same horse face and looked a lot alike.
Long blonde hair can hide a lot.

Jackie didn't like her; that's why they didn't marry. I seem to remember she went to Jackie's deathbed with roller blades on. Johnjohn was forbidden to marry her, and then he went on to find rough lookalike CBK and married her quickly.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 19, 2018 6:11 AM |
Jackie inadvertently spared Daryl a watery grave.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 19, 2018 6:14 AM |
Her Playboy pictorial was clearly an attempt to cash in on the sex tape / pussy flashing trend.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 19, 2018 6:18 AM |
R35 Oh please, Miss thing Geneviève de Fontenay, that was a pretty American girl!
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 19, 2018 6:21 AM |
If she got over being an object of desire and her little baby girl voice, she could probably play a good transgender role.

She was also robbed of an Oscar for her performance as Elle Driver in Kill Bill.

She came from money like lots of uninteresting actors.
Now she is with Neil Young, she is happy, I think
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 19, 2018 6:47 PM |
Was she much of an actress? No. Was she beautiful when she was young? Absolutely. Her beauty was what made her career. She was good in Kill Bill, though.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 19, 2018 7:05 PM |
Now she would be a youtube star posting videos of herself taking selfies and doing her makeup
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 19, 2018 8:54 PM |
Streep. Blanchett. Winslet. Mirren. Hannah.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 19, 2018 9:03 PM |
One of my favorite 80s movie is Wall Street. She was good as a vapid interior designer.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 19, 2018 9:06 PM |
She would have killed as the lead in Terms of Endearment instead of that fucking nobody in a tracksuit Debra Winger.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | June 19, 2018 9:17 PM |
She was affecting and exceptional in SPEEDWAY JUNKY, as was Jordan Brower. But I always say that.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 19, 2018 9:42 PM |
Her sex scene with a neanderthal in "Clan of the Cave Bear" should be on her highlight reel.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | June 19, 2018 9:50 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 60 | June 19, 2018 9:51 PM |
She played a lesbian in The Hotflashes—a movie about middle-aged women playing basketball to raise money. Her plastic surgery was distracting.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | June 19, 2018 9:57 PM |
It would be cool to see a Splash sequel in present day with Daryl walking around topless in Manhattan with a mermaid fin.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | June 20, 2018 12:27 AM |
R57 but they both got to star in that classic Legal Eagles.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | June 20, 2018 12:35 AM |
I wonder how many parts have been handed to her. It's hard to imagine her auditioning better than someone else.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 20, 2018 5:17 AM |
She would slay in Handmaid's Tale and Homeland.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | June 20, 2018 6:17 AM |
She's actually a good choice when you need a cipher character, or a female at one remove from society in some way (i.e. prostitute, killer, mermaid).
Perhaps her good performances are accidental, or directed. But some entries on her IMDB certainly are good and we Queens can't take that away from her.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | June 20, 2018 7:07 AM |
R28 reminds me how much I fucking love Romeovoid. BENEFACTOR was a great album.
And could Debora Iyall be any cooler? Now there's an interesting woman in the performing arts.

I thought her break out roll was Summer Lovers? I always wanted to go to Greece after that and have a 3 way for the summer. With guys that is.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | June 20, 2018 7:20 AM |
If you watch her interview on Howard Stern with Quentin Tarantino it's shocking.
I believe the stuff about her being semi-retarded. Not mention how drugged up she appeared to be.

by Anonymous | reply 71 | June 20, 2018 8:40 AM |
r69 Summer Lovers was a flop when it came out. It only became a hit on cable as the years went by.
I would think Blade Runner was the film that really launched her.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | June 20, 2018 8:45 AM |
Yes r20, it was an awful film and I don't know why women and gay men love it so.

I liked The Pope Of Greenwich Village.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | June 20, 2018 8:55 PM |
You wonder if there was some sort of Harvey Weinstein action going on for her to get all of those roles without having much talent.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | June 21, 2018 4:40 AM |
I think her heyday was before Harvey Weinstein's time.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | June 21, 2018 4:48 AM |
There was always a Harvey Weinstein in Hollywood, and there were and are still plenty of them.

She must have had some scarlet pussy for JFK Jr. to choose her over every other woman on earth.

She's got to be the most successful autistic actress ever.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | June 23, 2018 7:02 AM |
R71 "Roxanne" was a big summer hit, but I didn't think Hannah's role and performance amounted to much, and the movie was, if not schlocky, kind of borderline corny and sappy. I prefer Steve's earlier movies. The mountain town was beautiful, though.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | June 23, 2018 2:48 PM |
She seems like she would be really into adult coloring books.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | July 4, 2018 5:22 AM |
I'm Wall Street, she was a character still pervasive in modern-day Manhattan: a "pretty", clueless, social-climbing retard girl getting by on blowjobs.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | July 4, 2018 5:32 AM |
You wonder why a vacuous blank slate like her wasn't scooped up by Tom Cruise or John Travolta to prop up at premieres and red carpet events.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | July 4, 2018 5:34 AM |
The gills and mermaid costume could not have helped her in the vag odor department.

I loved the movie "Reckless." Haviland Morris as Mary Pat Sykes stole the show. If it hadn't been for that movie, I'd have probably never heard the song "Never Say Never." Anyone notice Jennifer Grey in the movie?
I so much wanted someone to just take me away like that.

Summer Lovers was a stink bomb of a script. The only reason Barbara Rush and Carole Cook did it was for the free trip to Greece.

by Anonymous | reply 93 | November 16, 2018 4:45 PM |
She had that Amazonian big-lipped look the 80s adored. Like Kelly LeBrock.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | November 16, 2018 7:31 PM |
I liked Reckless a lot too, whenever I mention it (and the burning hot scene between her and Aidan Quinn in his tighty whities) to anyone, they tell me they've never heard of it. Maybe because it came out in 84 (I think), which was before the Brat Pack moved in and took over with some help from John Hughes.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | November 17, 2018 10:41 PM |
Doesnt she come from money ?

She and Uma Thurman look like a pair of drag queens. They don’t look like they were born female. Can’t stand her as a actress but she was good in Kill Bill. Agree with the poster who said she’s good in playing outsider roles.

R70 Shocking how? Any juicy highlights?
by Anonymous | reply 107 | August 4, 2019 6:13 AM |
I like her. Daryl was in a lot of movies so, for some, she is remembered for the nostalgia: She was a constant presence in the '80s: Summer Lovers, Blade Runner, Splash, Reckless, Legal Eagles, Roxanne, Wall Street, Steel Magnolias.
I liked her in Crazy People, an underrated comedy from 1990 with Dudley Moore. She was also in the Grumpy Old Men films. And played the mom in A Walk to Remember, the Mandy Moore weepfest.
And she was excellent in Kill Bill. Quentin Tarantino got the best performance from her. She should have rode the buzz and critical acclaim she got from that film, but she continued with straight-to-video B films and bad plastic surgery.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | August 4, 2019 6:47 AM |
She looks a bit like French actress Emmanuelle Seigner. And a little bit like Robin Wright too.

Even before she opened up about her autism, I met her at the post-screening for "Silver City "at the 2004 TIFF. She's physically quite striking in person, but she was just standing there, barely interacting with anyone, including her castmates and the director, looking at her feet. It was very odd and, years later, when she talked about her autism, I wasn't surprised at all. It was obvious there was something quite off with her in terms of being comfortable around people.

Steel Magnolias is an awful movie in general. My mother, having given birth to three sons and no daughter, was quick to inculcate me in the art of the chick flick. I never ever took to Steel Magnolias. Shelby was the author of her own misfortune and the other ladies should have been allowed to say so.

I hate Steel Magnolias. I would have loved to have seen Catherine O'Hara in the part instead, she was close to getting it but I think she would have upstaged everyone.
Daryl is only good in weird parts. She was really good in Kill Bill and I think if they would have cast her as villains it would have been a great use of her. Unfortunately she fucked up her face with bad cosmetic surgery and she's done. Do none of these former starlets have friends who say 'Don't!' or are they all sabotaging each other for the same roles?

Forgettable actress. Magnolias is a mess--despite being a southerner (well from Atlanta), Julia Roberts is a weak link as is Shirley Maclaine who was in her peoriod of playing brittle versions of the daffy women she played in the 60s.
