Only two cities are bidding for the GOP 2020 Convention.
From electoral vote.com This news is a few days old, but I didn't see it on a thread here. Thought I would share it. Note: Las Vegas is one of the cities. Can anyone say emoluments clause?
Generally, cities like national political conventions. Tens of thousands of people show up, staying in hotels, eating in restaurants, and generally pouring money into the city. However, relatively few cities bid for the 2020 Republican National Convention, mostly because there is a good chance the convention will renominate Donald Trump. He is not popular in cities and no small town has the tens of thousands of hotel rooms needed.
Nevertheless, there were a few bids, and the RNC has now whittled the choices down to Las Vegas and Charlotte. Neither city has ever hosted a Republican convention, but Charlotte hosted the 2012 Democratic National Convention, so the RNC knows it is capable of it. On the other hand, Donald Trump has a hotel in Las Vegas and he could make a lot of money by encouraging delegates to stay there. On the third hand, the average high temperature in Las Vegas in the summer is 102 Fahrenheit. Las Vegas was in the running for the 2016 Republican convention, but when evangelicals discovered that the Las Vegas telephone book contains 64 pages of listings for escort services, the city withdrew its bid. Whether Trump sees this aspect of Las Vegas as a feature or a bug is not known. The Democrats are not as far along in the process yet. (V)

Las Vegas is the best choice. They have the facilities and hotel rooms to accommodate such a large convention. I was just there. The 101 degree heat wasn't that bad but found myself walking through the casinos to keep out of the sun and heat.

This is not that big of a convention that most cities couldn't handle it, even smaller cities where the GOP would be welcome. Recall the 2016 shitshow and on the evening that he accepted the Republican nomination, they blocked about a third of the arena with that humongous stage and screen. And even then, there were empty seats.
Trump's Vegas hotel is not conveniently located to either the convention center or the Thomas and Mack Center, and it doesn't have a casino or the draw that the strip hotels do. I frankly think anybody staying there would be doing so solely to kiss Trump's ass, so yeah, it will be booked. Not that it will matter; unless the Democrats take back the House, Trump will get away with selling off our national assets to the highest bidder.

When I was a teen, I used to play in a tennis tournament in a small town in a CA city. The locals would house all the players. It was a major yearly event for the town. The Dems should have their convention in a smaller red city in a red state. Get closer to the Deplorables and give the city a kick in their economy.

R18, weird, as soon as I saw this thread, I thought to myself that the Dems should have their convention in Houston. Texas is considered a red state, but Clinton lost Texas by fewer percentage points than some of the purple states. I think she was only 5% behind Trump and a huge improvement over Obama's showing in '08 and '12, so a city in Texas makes sense.
