They are scrambling in the face of huge backlash, even on Fox News, about taking kids away from asylum-seeking parents.

Presenting at a border and seeking asylum is not a crime. It is provided for by international treaties that the US is a party to.

I think what the Trump border patrol are doing is letting them cross the line but arresting them before they can make it to the place to request asylum.

Has the possibility of being one of Trump's larger dumpster fires - Huckabee did NOT want to do this conference, asked (practically begged) for Nielsen to attend in order to take away some of the heat from herself, the administration scrambling to get everyone on the same page after disparate comments, and of course Trump's blatant lies of placing the blame on the Democrats.

White House says postponed till 5:00. And that Homeland Security will take some questions. It's all up to the WH press corp now. How hard do they press?

So am I understanding that the parents who are being separated from the children are people who have been arrested? If so, then what other choice is there but to separate them from their children? When a US citizen is arrested, their children are not allowed to accompany them to jail, right? What am I missing here?

This “crisis” is nothing more than the Trump administration choosing to follow existing immigration laws as written by Congress. The same laws which were ignored by previous administrations, including Obama’s.

If you don’t like what’s going on, Congress can change the laws at any time... as was stated multiple times during today’s press conference.

Nielsen was asked over and over by @kwelkernbc: where are the girls? where are the toddlers? She never answers.

Also, 10000 of the 12000 children who are being held... arrived in the US unaccompanied by their parents. They were sent solo on a dangerous journey, at risk of being abducted by traffickers.

Question about these press conferences. I see reporters I know from ABC, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, etc. April Ryan, etc. Are there ever Faux News people there? I never see them in the press pool.

R54, asylum seekers are vetted. They have to prove their claim that they need asylum. They get put in administrative holding (detention) sometimes for years. They never set foot on US soil. If a judge rules in favor of asylum, they will then get work authorization, a social security card.

Yeah but note how he's not pressuring the Trump administration to do anything about it. Instead, he is proposing legislation that will almost certainly not pass and that Trump has said he will veto. There doesn't seem to be a specific law that says children have to be separated from their families when being detained for illegal border crossing, which is technically just a misdemeanor. Why are they doing this now when they were keeping kids with families before?

Basically, they're trying to get by fiat what they could not get by legislation: a closing of the U.S. borders to immigrants and asylum seekers.

Any who returned to fighting against US interests could have then be tracked and fired upon if deemed worthy of the expense of a cruse missile. Also a great source of intelligence.
