This reminds me of something David Sedaris wrote. He was in High school and there was the usual popular clique in charge at his school. Kids everyone envied and looked up to and could make your life hell if they decided you are a fag. And then he went to some other town and the kids there were speaking in reverent tones about whoever was at the top of *their* high school social stratum. But David didn’t know who they were so he didn’t give a shit; they had no power over him.

The Carters have influence over a certain subset of the population. They have no influence in my sphere; just because people know who they are doesn’t mean we buy what they’re selling or care what they think. And I could say the same about Billy Graham (until recently) or Crispy Ronaldo.

The album would have easily done over $300k if it were released in a normal fashion. Those are still good numbers in 2018 for an album that was released in the middle of the tracking week with no free streaming options. Everyone's sales are way down except for a couple artists. Consumers stream now instead of buy.
