Research indicates Half or Men Shave/Trim Their Leg Hair

Recently, a Men’s Health editor noticed that more than one guy at the gym had shaved legs. Which made us wonder: Is this a trend? Are guys everywhere starting to do this now?

Obviously bikers and swimmers do it for very specific reasons: wound-healing and aerodynamics, respectively. But we wanted quantifiable results on whether average guys might be cleaning up down there.

The majority of men are not completely shaving their legs, but more than 33 percent admitted that “I don’t shave clean, but I do use a trimmer to cut it down.” And 15 percent are shaving completely. So that adds up to nearly half of the men we surveyed doing something about their leg hair.

And what do the women think of the idea?

Related: You Know More About What Women Want Than You Think

Our friends at Women’s Health asked their Facebook followers, “What do you think about guys shaving their legs?” The results: Nearly 30 percent of women like “a man who trims leg hair down,” and 22 percent “love a man with clean shaven legs.” That means more than half of the women responding like it when a guy does a little legscaping.

If you're not shaving your legs currently, or at least trimming, you might be surprised to know that you're just barely in the majority, according to our poll. So in the event that you want to experiment, here’s our guide to everything you need to know before you take a razor to unchartered territory.

Why do guys do it?

Male image consultant Aaron Marino, based in Atlanta, explains the phenomenon like this: “Most guys are not interested in completely shaving their legs, but they will take the length and bulk down with a groomer attachment. Just so the leg hair isn’t crazy, bushy and long,” he said. “It becomes kind of a hair-management situation.”

He adds: "For me, it’s purely aesthetic. When I started working out, I shaved my arms so you could see more definition. In the fitness world, it’s not as taboo for men to remove body hair.

So I kept doing it, and then started shaving my legs, too. I prefer the look, and I feel like it’s cleaner. Hair isn’t one of those things I need.”

How do they get rid of it?

There are salons all across the country that aren’t just for women anymore.

In New York City, you can walk into the Dyanna Body Spa and get a full leg wax on both the left and the right for just $75.

Waxing lasts longer than shaving, and it’s more complete. Painful, yes, but still very complete.

If your pain threshold is high and your wallet is full, this is a good way to go.

Then again, shaving your legs with an actual razor is something you can tackle at your own convenience.

Related: Manscape Your Eyebrows without Looking Like You Manscape Your Eyebrows

Get a good gel cream, a disposable razor, and have at it.

To avoid deep shin slices, keep the blade parallel to the floor. In other words, shave upward from your ankle to your thigh. Keep your knees straight while you’re at it, because razors don't easily navigate around bony bent knees.

How will they look when I’m clean-shaven?

There are some parts of your body that no matter how hairless they are, they will never sparkle. Like, say, your balls. But your legs? Assuming you can complete the task without any major cuts and nicks, your skin should shine when you’re done.

Body oils can increase the shine factor, but any body lotion is good for locking in moisture. (We’ve got a few suggestions for The Best Moisturizers for Your Skin. The science behind these products is a little mysterious, but they basically break down the bonds in the hair so it is weakened and can be wiped away. But the trouble is that the cream may work well on fine hair, but less so on coarse hair. So your results will be patchy, at best.

Plus, to be honest, they sting like a mother.

And according to the Nair for Men website, you have to wait 72 hours between uses. So if you have a last-minute date you’re prepping for, but you just depilatoried yesterday morning, by the time you get in the shower, and then carry the one, you’d have to wait until... you know what? Forget it. Just shave.

Crazy.

Men wanting to act like women.

I’ve seen a lot of men at the gym with shaved pits.

Women I know don’t like hair on a man, and they say so, and a lot of men shave to get their attention.

I do not approve. I encourage men to look as they are, without constantly trying to be what they’re not.

Yeah younger people think hairy male bodies are gross

I have to admit I do it trim but only because I have super hairy legs. They looks hairy even after I trim. Otherwise I like my body hair. I really hate shaved pits on men though.

by Anonymousreply 7June 15, 2018 11:18 AM

Woman hate men's bodies when it really comes down to it. They hate lots of body hair, they hate big bushy beards, they hate men's testicles. Throw on a speedo in your late 30's with a slight belly and walk up and down the beech just like women do. You will get more daggers thrown at you through woman's eyes and self righteous expression of disapproval than you will from men. Chubby women i n a form fitting one piece that shows everything are big beautiful and should not be body shamed. The equally chubby man in a speedo will get called gross, disgusting, a loser, a pedo, and F-AGG.

Woman are more sexist than men if you think about it.

It is totally the internet porn influence.

Do some of you really believe this?

by Anonymousreply 10June 15, 2018 11:35 AM

I love the natural look hairy or smooth. Shaved legs, no. My partner is naturally very hairy he likes to shave and trim in the summer but I tell him no don't shave since I like it that way.

by Anonymousreply 11June 15, 2018 11:41 AM

One of my gal pals, who is blonde and gorgeous love hairy men. She like the soft feel of chest hair. She married an Indian American.

by Anonymousreply 12June 15, 2018 11:42 AM

I like the smooth buff muscular look

by Anonymousreply 13June 15, 2018 11:53 AM

If even the slightest bit of a man suggest he has a bulge, women get all bent out of shape and complain. This guy got kicked out of the pool for some very modest shorts. And before you say he is a chub, how many chubby women ever get kicked out of a pool with their big basket ball boobs hanging out?

by Anonymousreply 14June 15, 2018 11:55 AM

I trim my leg hairs with a 2 guard mainly in the summer when I’m at the pool a lot. I’m blond so the hair is very fine and a few strands can get weirdly long. Trimmed looks better with a tan and the hair seems to get blonder.

We have a crisis. We have too much time to think and we don’t think about anything of any real consequence, and so we end up with people warring over leg hairlessness and overweight body acceptance, pronouns and policing one another’s words, etc. Who cares? Why can’t we just do what we want to do and let others do the same and realize that it has no fucking bearing on anything at all in this world aside from further factionalizing people and building tension based on nothing at all?

The hairy Tom Selleck was a big crush for women

I have heard of straight men telling girlfriends to shave all of their body hair. I think the younger set is really influenced by online porn.

I guess the guys who are long beard types are fighting this but it often looks hipster douche, and it also becomes an internet image.

That's the problem, unless a man is ripped with a six pack, he gets body shamed at the beach mostly by women if he wares anything more revealing than board shorts. In fact, I just watched a show the other day about the best beaches in the world. The hosts, who were both female predictably commented that men in America should not wear tight swim trunks or speedos like they do in Europe because it's so gross. They then said hot guys wear board shorts. Basically you are a loser if you show a package. Then they did a montage of women in supper small bikinis as if that makes the beach better some how. Totally sexist.

by Anonymousreply 25June 15, 2018 12:37 PM

That's right, R23, you were the one who brought it up, and that discussion is taking place HERE. - in Gay World. Expect gay men in a Big Gay World talking about how bizarre women and their "men are icky" attitudes are. Very sad news indeed for us who love hairy blokes! I have noticed at the beach, and my health club many a shaved pit, but was unaware of the penchant for leg trimming/shaving. Stay hairy gentlemen!

They hate men to show their bodies in tight anything. They are the only ones allowed to display their sexuality in public- tiny bikinis, micro-mini skirts, tight tops with their tits spilling out all over the place is fine though.

by Anonymousreply 32June 15, 2018 1:45 PM

[quote]Stay manly, don't shave.

There's manly and there's "gay manly".

Gay men pluck and shave and cut their hair short, not a hair out of place, bleach their teeth, go on weird diets, over workout at the gym, not an inch of spare fat - then photograph themselves in the mirror at the gym and are greatly admired by other gays who do exactly the same.

Gay men who do not, are sneered at or ignored, at best.

What a life!

I thinned mine out using at-home light pulse hair removal. Have to do it regularly. It feels better w/o so much. Feels sexy. Yeah, quite a few guys shave their legs now.

by Anonymousreply 36June 15, 2018 2:32 PM

I love leg hair.

by Anonymousreply 37June 15, 2018 2:33 PM

Shave anything, just don’t shave the bush!

by Anonymousreply 38June 15, 2018 2:34 PM

I like blonde leg hair if it's not too thick and long. It's nice. Anything else is kind of sucky.

Pubes have got to be trimmed or shaved - it just looks nowadays to have a full thing down there. Holes need to be shaved for sanitary reasons, I think.

by Anonymousreply 39June 15, 2018 2:35 PM

Are you a man R39?

by Anonymousreply 40June 15, 2018 2:38 PM

I’ve been a hairy dude since high school, not only my legs but my bum and chest. I was self-conscious about it and tried waxing, but it hurt like hell and irritated my skin for weeks afterward. Trimming / shaving regularly became too high maintenance, and I just decided to embrace being hirsute. I think it gives my body a more masculine, mature appearance.

by Anonymousreply 41June 15, 2018 2:48 PM

Everybody is Star Bellied Sneetch and wants what they don’t have.

I’m not a hairy guy but always wanted a lot of body hair.

Imagine. Guys wanting to look like me. Mind blowing!

by Anonymousreply 42June 15, 2018 2:48 PM

It’s not just women that hate men’s body but men hate women’s as well.

This is def an instance where gays and lesbians rise above. The way I’ve heard lesbians/gays talk about other women’s/men’s bodies is way more accepting than the way straight people.

by Anonymousreply 43June 15, 2018 3:03 PM

The male aesthetics, bodybuilding, and fitness model movement is the biggest single influence today in what is considered hot in men, and the message they send is smooth is hot. You don’t see hairy guys on the cover of Men’s Fitness magazine.

by Anonymousreply 50June 15, 2018 4:51 PM

Ingrown and otherwise traumatized follicles ain't exactly free of pathogens-and the aerodynamic argument bicyclists and swimmers use is hilarious..where's the research? And who fucking cares, anyway?

Shaving legs is really weird to me... I would find that a bit of a turn off probably (I don't remember ever encountering it). Also, it grows back prickly - so do they keep doing it?

I am pretty hairy... and I occasionally clip / trim in certain areas - but never shave (my skin gets razor burn anyway).

The only thing is with arm pits - I have to clip them very close otherwise my deodorant situation is a mess. I know people above commented on that but if you had my armpit hair, you'd understand.

by Anonymousreply 88June 17, 2018 8:49 AM

NOPE, R84 , you're still being obtuse. Body hair is a secondary sex characteristic brought about by male hormones. Men are supposed to be hairy because that's what masculinizing hormones do. Women aren't supposed because nobody wants to fuck virile-bodied hairy women who have too many masculinizing hormones.

Also, this is a gay men's message board and I don't care if women think men ought to have to shave and wax just because men expect the same of them. Don't give even one fuck; their opinions mean nothing.

Men without body hair telegraph that they don't have sufficient masculine hormones running through their bodies to be sexually interesting. Men who go to lengths to remove, suppress, or deny the natural state of their secondary sex characteristics are doubly uninteresting. They're maladjusted adolescents when it comes to male sexuality, including their own, and they despise the natural sex characteristics of grown-up male bodies, including their own. They run from it like terrified 10 year olds who just got their first glimpse of what puberty has on tap for them.
