How the Hell Did ‘Law & Order’ Get Cancelled?

One of the best things that ever happened to TV. Whenever there’s a marathon on, I can’t help but procrastinate my life away by watching it.

by Anonymousreply 338July 16, 2018 8:29 AM

OP it was on for 25 years. Everything has a shelf life get over it. One or two of the sequels are still on the air.

by Anonymousreply 1June 13, 2018 6:08 PM

[QUOTE]OP it was on for 25 years.

So what? Crime stopped being compelling?

by Anonymousreply 2June 13, 2018 6:12 PM

They've been filming the show since the Coolidge administration. Enough is enough goddamn it.

by Anonymousreply 3June 13, 2018 6:13 PM

Yes. Crime stopped being compelling. Tastes change. You aged 25 years during the show’s run. It’s not the early 90s anymore.

by Anonymousreply 4June 13, 2018 6:14 PM

There a million eps to watch and it is still on all the time. You need more?

by Anonymousreply 5June 13, 2018 6:18 PM

[QUOTE]You need more?

YES!

by Anonymousreply 6June 13, 2018 6:20 PM

I've never watched one single episode.. voluntarily 😑

Same kinda recycled crap throughout the years along the lines of Perry Mason and Matlock. No thank you, I'll pass. RIP already 👋

by Anonymousreply 7June 13, 2018 6:27 PM

And yet, 35 episodes of "100 Centre Street" was better.

by Anonymousreply 8June 13, 2018 6:27 PM

actually it was on for 20 years. A deal was in place to renew for year 21, to break the record set by Gunsmoke.

But the two sides couldn't come to an agreement on the licensing fee. In addition Dick Wolf wanted a full season renewal or 22 episodes. NBC countered with only 8, no more.

So the deal fell apart

by Anonymousreply 9June 13, 2018 6:29 PM

You have SVU - isn't that sufficient?

by Anonymousreply 10June 13, 2018 6:29 PM

[QUOTE]You have SVU - isn't that sufficient?

NO! Sensational garbage. Never liked it. Law & Order was all meat and potatoes.

by Anonymousreply 11June 13, 2018 6:30 PM

r1 YOU get over it. L&0 was one of the greatest shows ever. Too bad Americans prefer its trashy jerry springer version, SVU.

by Anonymousreply 12June 13, 2018 6:31 PM

There is no evidence of that, R12.

The original had higher ratings and won more emmys than svu

by Anonymousreply 13June 13, 2018 6:35 PM

[quote] The original had higher ratings and won more emmys than svu

The ratings are irrelevant, it is the demo that counts - women 18- 34 and SVU scored higher on that demo. L&O skewed older

by Anonymousreply 14June 13, 2018 6:40 PM

Not sure how that proves ‘Americans prefer its trashy Jerry Springer version, SVU’

by Anonymousreply 15June 13, 2018 6:43 PM

Those last seasons, they had finally put together a cast with no real duds out of the 4 ADAs and detectives (OK, maybe Anthony Anderson was just tolerable, but he didn't drag the show down when he was on camera, unlike a couple of former cast members).

by Anonymousreply 16June 13, 2018 6:47 PM

I love Law and Order, but that last season was pretty shitty. It was the season with Jeremy Sisto and Anthony Anderson. Some of the lines they had to say were outright embarrassing and super cheesy

by Anonymousreply 17June 13, 2018 6:51 PM

I think the strongest cast was at the midpoint as Schiff was exiting.

Schiff

McCoy

Carmichael

Van Buren

Briscoe

Curtis

by Anonymousreply 18June 13, 2018 6:51 PM

Ha Ha, OP ! I bought the DVDs of the entire 20 years. Saw this coming..

Snicker

by Anonymousreply 19June 13, 2018 6:53 PM

What years, r18? 1998-2001 or so?

by Anonymousreply 20June 13, 2018 6:53 PM

R20:

1998-99 & 1999-00 seasons

Well you don't have a job OP, you've nothing else to do/w your time. Or evenings? Hell, I can't even sneak a peek at work. Therefore not bothered Craig's List Personals are gone.

by Anonymousreply 23June 13, 2018 6:55 PM

Actually, only 1998-99. It was still amazing in 1999-00 with the only change being Ed Green for Rey Curtis

by Anonymousreply 24June 13, 2018 6:56 PM

Homicide: Life on the Street was a better program.

by Anonymousreply 25June 13, 2018 7:07 PM

No it wasn’t, R25, you fucking liar.

by Anonymousreply 26June 13, 2018 7:08 PM

I wish Dianne Wiest had stayed on, instead of bringing in Fred Thompson

by Anonymousreply 27June 13, 2018 7:09 PM

R26 = Sic Looserino

by Anonymousreply 28June 13, 2018 7:10 PM

I agree with R25. I just bought the whole series of Homicide for a reasonable price.

by Anonymousreply 29June 13, 2018 7:16 PM

Does it have closed captions, r29?

by Anonymousreply 30June 13, 2018 7:16 PM

No, R9, that’s not what happened. The show was the sacrificial lamb to get Wolf’s Law & Order: Los Angeles on the air. And that show was an utter disaster. I was on the crew of L&O. We totally had the rug pulled out from under us. We all wrapped the season expecting to do at least one more.

by Anonymousreply 31June 13, 2018 7:20 PM

I so agree with you OP. Just to hear the beginning music when i'm in another room makes me swoon with happiness. If there is a marathon on, and when isn't there, I leave my tv on day and night. No DVDs for me. I want it in real time in my house as I go about my dusting and organizing.

by Anonymousreply 32June 13, 2018 7:21 PM

R31 didn't the network cut the episode order, and that is why the deal fell apart. That is what the trades said. Wolf wanted 22 episodes and the network would only commit to 8

by Anonymousreply 33June 13, 2018 7:23 PM

Deee'tective Munch on Homicide so outshone the Law and Order cast they poached him.

Besides which Munch has also appeared on X-Files, The Wire, The Beat, and Arrested Development.

Why is SVU “trashy” and “jerry springer?” Because it covers sex crimes? Really?

by Anonymousreply 35June 13, 2018 7:31 PM

I think the cop side of homicide was as good or possibly better, but the courthouse side of homicide cane nowhere close

by Anonymousreply 36June 13, 2018 7:32 PM

Elizabeth Rohm was the worst actor in history.

by Anonymousreply 37June 13, 2018 7:35 PM

I used to encounter reruns, but seldom the first season with Chris Noth and George Dzundza. Those were great.

As the show progressed, I began to really dislike Sam Waterson. Just as I disliked Alan Alda on MASH.

To add insult to injury - look at the home page on imdb.

THE PICTURE SHOWS THE DUO FROM SVU!!! Should be the mothership cast.

by Anonymousreply 38June 13, 2018 7:37 PM

There were a few seasons where the show really lost steam, the ones with Winnie from "The Wonder Years" and Dennis Farina. Also, Annie Parisse didn't do much for me, she was merely adequate without leaving much impression whatsoever. The show really rebounded with the cast of Linus Roache, Alana de la Garza, Sisto, and Anderson and, then, it got pulled off the air while we were stuck with the SVU garbage. Say what you want, but the original L&O at its worst never trawled at the same depths of awfulness like L&O:SVU - remember Christine Lahti, Sharon Stone, the Speed Weed years, etc?

by Anonymousreply 39June 13, 2018 7:46 PM

[QUOTE]I think the cop side of homicide was as good or possibly better, but the courthouse side of homicide cane nowhere close

Therefore it wasn’t a better program. Case closed!

by Anonymousreply 40June 13, 2018 7:51 PM

I absolutely love the crossover episodes where Briscoe & Munch team up.

Those two had such amazing chemistry

by Anonymousreply 41June 13, 2018 7:56 PM

[quote]There were a few seasons where the show really lost steam, the ones with Winnie from "The Wonder Years" and Dennis Farina.

What the fuck are you talking about?

by Anonymousreply 42June 13, 2018 8:00 PM

The only decent episode was the one where I starred as a favor to my then-paramour. I still regret lowering myself to do television.

by Anonymousreply 43June 13, 2018 8:01 PM

I've watched so many episodes over the years... actors/characters i really enjoyed but didn't last include Dennis Farina, Diane Wiest and Michael Imperioli.

I really liked the episodes with Farina and Imperioli.

I know that's probably a minority opinion, but those two guys were excellent together.

What a thrill it can be to actually catch episodes from the first three or four seasons... no computers or cell phones, NYC looking very gritty.

It should have been cancelled years ago. No tv retains its quality when it's been on for decades. Now if they would only cancel The Simpsons. That show REALLY needs to die, too.

by Anonymousreply 47June 13, 2018 8:54 PM

Don't even get reruns on ion tv anymore except on Wednesdays. So I watch very little ion.

by Anonymousreply 48June 13, 2018 9:05 PM

I actually liked L&O:LA.

by Anonymousreply 49June 13, 2018 9:10 PM

Fridays, r48....you MUST watch ION on Fridays......

by Anonymousreply 50June 13, 2018 9:11 PM

Loved Corey Stoll on LO LA and the woman DA but that's about it, rest of cast was weak.

by Anonymousreply 51June 13, 2018 9:12 PM

[quote]I think the cop side of homicide was as good or possibly better, but the courthouse side of homicide cane nowhere close

Homicide: Life on the Street didn't have a "cop side" and "courthouse side" dynamic. It was about the Fells Point, Baltimore, murder po-leece, and the partnerships that formed there. "The courthouse side" wasn't even in the opening credits, was it?

by Anonymousreply 52June 13, 2018 9:15 PM

I loved L&O: LA. I was more disappointed to see it go than L&O.

by Anonymousreply 53June 13, 2018 9:15 PM

There's a reason Skeet Ulrich doesn't have a career and it was painfully obvious on L&O:LA, as much as I loved Corey Stoll and Alana de la Garza.

by Anonymousreply 54June 13, 2018 9:17 PM

Jerry Orbach WAS Law and Order and it really started to go downhill after he died.

by Anonymousreply 55June 13, 2018 9:17 PM

Network TV is SO over.

by Anonymousreply 56June 13, 2018 9:18 PM

r7, You, Sir, are an idiot. The Original "L&O" was light-years ahead of the shows you mention, in stories, acting, social commentary (See: "Aftershock," S6, E23), and dialogue.

However, there really was no point in watching post-Jerry Orbach.

L&O:LA was the peak of Skeet Ulrich's hotness.

by Anonymousreply 59June 13, 2018 9:22 PM

I remember when Skeet Ulrich was in ALL the magazines, being shrieked about in "25 under 25" after "25 under 25" article. I never got it. But in L&O:LA, I didn't think he sucked.

by Anonymousreply 60June 13, 2018 9:25 PM

He came across as incredibly bland, particularly in comparison to Stoll who, even though he wouldn't be classified as stereotypically attractive just has that something that Skeet will never have.

by Anonymousreply 61June 13, 2018 9:27 PM

Terrence Howard was pretty weak as well in that Executive DA role on LA

by Anonymousreply 62June 13, 2018 9:29 PM

I’ve always loved Alfred Molina, but he just slept walked through two different roles.

by Anonymousreply 63June 13, 2018 9:32 PM

I wish BBC America would put more UK shows on than just Top Gear and Star Trek. What's the point? I'd love to watch L&O UK.

by Anonymousreply 64June 13, 2018 9:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 67June 13, 2018 10:34 PM

Jerry Orbach was great, it didn't matter who he was partnered with, he had chemistry with every partner.

by Anonymousreply 68June 13, 2018 10:36 PM

[quote]I wish BBC America would put more UK shows on than just Top Gear and Star Trek. What's the point? I'd love to watch L&O UK.

I agree, BBC America had some amazing cop and mystery shows when the first came on. I enjoyed the cop show with Ken Stout and Caroline Catz. Silent Witness was another great cop show, I also saw Luther on BBC A before it was on PBS. Britz was another get series, only 2 episodes, but so good. I discovered Riz Ahmed through that series, he's amazing.

Now all BBC America seems to air is crap like Star Trek? Why? Because a British actor is in the series?! I haven't watched this channel in ages. Is Graham Norton still on?

by Anonymousreply 69June 13, 2018 10:43 PM

I'd watch Space 1999.

by Anonymousreply 70June 13, 2018 10:56 PM

Because Anthony Anderson (fabulous on "Blackish") and Jeremy Sisto were terrible and had ZERO chemistry and they stated getting more graphic with the crime scenes turning off long time fans.

by Anonymousreply 71June 13, 2018 11:03 PM

R 64. No thank you. Torrents is littered with viruses. And frankly I can't afford to put one more penny into media. So I prefer the station I already receive and pay for provide better selections. Oh and television or lack thereof doesn't make me moan doll.

by Anonymousreply 72June 13, 2018 11:20 PM

R69 Graham Norton still has a show with pretty good guests. He did a George Michael show by himself that is on you tube. Sorry to derail the thread. I'll shut up now.

by Anonymousreply 73June 13, 2018 11:31 PM

R73, there was one Graham Norton episode where Matt Smith talked about getting stung by bee on his dick while having sex outside, it was hilarious! Then, Sting came on and IIRC Graham asked Sting if he was also stung be bee on his dick! The entire guest panel was great, it was one of Graham's funniest shows.

by Anonymousreply 74June 13, 2018 11:45 PM

Orbach should have been replaced with Richard Belzer

by Anonymousreply 75June 14, 2018 12:00 AM

[quote]Jerry Orbach was great, it didn't matter who he was partnered with, he had chemistry with every partner.

Even he could not elevate "Rey" (Benjamin Bratt) above "annoying Catholic pest."

by Anonymousreply 76June 14, 2018 12:03 AM

That occurred to me, too, r75. More than once. I hated Farina.

by Anonymousreply 77June 14, 2018 12:04 AM

[QUOTE]Orbach should have been replaced with Richard Belzer

Dennis Farina did a fine job stepping into his shoes.

by Anonymousreply 78June 14, 2018 12:04 AM

Dennis Farina was the only actor more annoying than Benjamin Bratt.

by Anonymousreply 79June 14, 2018 12:06 AM

After Trump was elected, I downloaded the entire LO universe, over 3,000 episodes between the various iterations. I really just needed Jerry Orbach in my life at that time (like comfort food) and I was surprised to realize he didn't come on until a few seasons in. I had missed the entire first few seasons.

by Anonymousreply 80June 14, 2018 12:26 AM

He succeeded George Dzundza and Paul Sorvino as Logan's partner.

by Anonymousreply 81June 14, 2018 12:29 AM

While the original was my favorite I'm grateful to have SVU. It's better than nothing.

For me though I watched L&O till the last episode, it was never the same without Orbach. I know he wasn't there the first couple of seasons but he really was the show. Still, what's the show to do. He died. They didn't fire him.

by Anonymousreply 82June 14, 2018 12:31 AM

I am about to drop a bomb in here. I am going to say something and then just saunter away.

I love LO Criminal Intent.

I love D'onofrio.

by Anonymousreply 83June 14, 2018 12:33 AM

L&O: CI was really just "Murder, She Wrote" but with a better cast and scripts.

by Anonymousreply 84June 14, 2018 12:38 AM

I didn't watch the show but Farina was great playing cops and tough guys. He retired from the Chicago PD as a detective and then went into acting.

I can see though the oh so woke L&O franchise might have been a poor fit for someone with actual police experience.

by Anonymousreply 87June 14, 2018 1:21 AM

[quote]I can see though the oh so woke L&O franchise might have been a poor fit for someone with actual police experience.

No it was the writing. The character was ludicrous. He would get in everyone's face and he wore suits and coats that coast thousand s of dollars and bragged about it.

by Anonymousreply 88June 14, 2018 1:21 AM

[quote] The show really rebounded with the cast of Linus Roache, Alana de la Garza, Sisto, and Anderson.

I completely agree - in fact I started watching again when Roache and Sisto joined the cast.

by Anonymousreply 89June 14, 2018 1:28 AM

Roache was splendid.

by Anonymousreply 90June 14, 2018 1:32 AM

Did we ever find out where Farina's character got the money for his wardrobe?

by Anonymousreply 91June 14, 2018 1:43 AM

Jill Hennessey was the best. Elisabeth Rohm was like a talking wall.

by Anonymousreply 92June 14, 2018 1:43 AM

I know that many will disagree with me but I would give Angie Harmon an edge over Jill Hennessey. I'm on the opposite end of the political spectrum from either Harmon or the character of Abbie Carmichael but the tension between her and Jack McCoy wascompelling and not in the romantic but professional sense.

by Anonymousreply 93June 14, 2018 1:48 AM

[quote]oh so woke L&O franchise

Law and Order was very pro-cop and pro-establishment. Occasionally some officer we didn’t know might turn out to be corrupt, but you didn’t ever see innocent people sitting in Riker’s for months because they couldn’t make bail or getting beaten up or killed by the cops. And our heroes always got the right man in the end. If the DA was prosecuting somebody, then you pretty much knew they were guilty.

by Anonymousreply 94June 14, 2018 1:49 AM

[quote] but you didn’t ever see innocent people sitting in Riker’s for months because they couldn’t make bail or getting beaten up or killed by the cops.

Not so sure I would make such a blanket statement. There were a number of episodes which dealt with the fact that the legal system often operates within the grey area between the existing law and the sense of what justice should really be.

by Anonymousreply 97June 14, 2018 1:54 AM

Farina had no chemistry with Jesse Martin and was just to hammy which explains why he didn't last. He just wasn't good for the show or as much more than a character actor overall. I'm not sure this has anything to do with his previous life as a cop.

I still wish we could have seen Belzer in the role with Martin.

But I agree about Angie Harmon I liked her better than Hennessey (who I liked too). Rohm was an acquired taste (very pretty though). I also liked Richard Brooks, wish he could have stayed on the show longer.

by Anonymousreply 98June 14, 2018 1:57 AM

Alana and Linus had a nice chemistry.

by Anonymousreply 99June 14, 2018 2:08 AM

by Anonymousreply 100June 14, 2018 2:19 AM

Because Wolf went on to fire and police shows. He has all these Chicago fire, Chicago pd Chicago lesbo shows.

by Anonymousreply 102June 14, 2018 2:25 AM

[quote]He would get in everyone's face and he wore suits and coats that coast thousands of dollars and bragged about it.

[quote]Did we ever find out where Farina's character got the money for his wardrobe?

Are you serious, do you know many cops and detectives are corrupt?!!

I worked with this extremely annoying woman who bragged that her narcotics detective husband was stealing a lot of the drugs he confiscated during the raids. He would sell the drugs to friends and then became a cokehead! Last I heard, the douchebag husband went on permeant disability and all gets a pension for his addiction! Our tax dollars at work for something this idiot did to himself. It's not as if he injured himself catching a suspect or whatever. Crap like this makes me pissed off.

This woman was a not mess. Typical Long Guyland yappy frau. Who the hell brags to people at work that their detective husband was stealing evidence?!! The husband also had connections for expensive designer clothes and accessories, she was always dressed in very expensive items. She also bragged that she worked because "It's something to do."

by Anonymousreply 103June 14, 2018 2:37 AM

If only I got promoted to the main show....

....Mariska doesn't appreciate me. And even when clothed I'm better than she ever will be.

by Anonymousreply 104June 14, 2018 2:47 AM

Agree about Angie Harmon. Carey Lowell was really good too. She stood out as unique from that revolving door.

Rohm was no doubt the worst of that second chair crew, but I think the actor who played the one and only female detective was the overall worst. I recall Jesse L Martin seeming pained trying to work opposite her.

It’s a shame they didn’t find someone better. Didn’t enough, I think S Epatha would have kicked ass in a detective role

by Anonymousreply 105June 14, 2018 3:19 AM

R98, I completely disagree about Farina and Martin... they didn't have the time to continue developing that character's relationship, Jessie left for part of the season to shoot the movie Rent. That's when the writers decided to have Martin's character shot and then Imperioli showed up as a temp.

Farina's character definitely had possibilities... the clothes, the car, the wad of cash. How was it possible? Was he crooked? Did he inherit money? Anita always seemed suspicious about him and Ed was just perplexed. That lack of explanation make him interesting.

For me, all of the Chicago programs pale in comparison to L&O. Wolf seems to be sleepwalking through them with ridiculous scripts and incredibly annoying characters. Is Epatha so hard up for cash that she accepted the role on Chicago Med?

by Anonymousreply 106June 14, 2018 11:59 AM

I liked Lupo and Bernard. Did not like Green. Lennie Briscoe was funny but could also be annoying.

So I don't think the later episodes are necessarily worse.

Dramatic.

by Anonymousreply 109June 14, 2018 12:13 PM

The 1st season of Law & order was the greatest. So real, and so new york. Plus I love all the guest stars of people who would go on to be stars.

by Anonymousreply 110June 14, 2018 1:14 PM

Loved all of the Law & Order ensembles. True, I preferred the ones without Rohm but they were all watchable thanks to the rest of the actors.

Have seen a few of L&O CI and can't stand Vincent D'O. I'll watch the Chris Noth and Jeff Goldblum ones though.

L&O SVU is unwatchable. Don't need to see rape of the week stuff. The actors were over the top. Same with V D'O, don't need to hear all about their messy personal lives.

I've seen a few eps of the U.K. version. Liked the actors. The British version of the Miranda warning has scary implications.

by Anonymousreply 111June 14, 2018 1:43 PM

Logan: Geez, Lennie, with all the loooove for you, you'd think Max and Phil were chopped liver!

Briscoe: What can I say, Mike? I'm the schmaltz!

by Anonymousreply 112June 14, 2018 1:50 PM

[QUOTE]Loved all of the Law & Order ensembles. True, I preferred the ones without Rohm but they were all watchable thanks to the rest of the actors.

That’s what made Law and Order so great. No matter who they put in there, it was still watchable. I didn’t like the Rohm character either but like you said, everybody else was so great and the stories so interesting that it didn’t really matter.

This show should still be running.

by Anonymousreply 113June 14, 2018 1:54 PM

[quote]Is Epatha so hard up for cash that she accepted the role on Chicago Med?

Yes. She should not work instead of work. Your logic is impeccable. And who knows, maybe she enjoys hanging around with her TV doctors. I know I would take a job if it meant doing scenes with Nick Gehlfuss, Colin Donnell, and Oliver Plath.

by Anonymousreply 114June 14, 2018 3:58 PM

Elisabeth Rohm was OK on L&O, but she was actually quite good in two recent David O. Russell movies: "Joy" and "American Hustle."

by Anonymousreply 115June 14, 2018 4:05 PM

I actually think the second season was better than the first.

by Anonymousreply 116June 14, 2018 4:09 PM

I did not mind Elizabeth Rohm. Fred Thompson, OTOH...

by Anonymousreply 117June 14, 2018 4:09 PM

Angie Harmon and Carey Lowell were the best. Didn't care for Rohmbot.

by Anonymousreply 118June 14, 2018 4:11 PM

[QUOTE]Fred Thompson OTOH

You didn’t like Branch? I don’t hear that too often.

by Anonymousreply 119June 14, 2018 4:53 PM

If there is a show that could easily be rebooted and remain contemporary it's the original L&O. There not obligated to bring back all an aging old cast under unrealistic circumstances; people will have moved on, been promoted, retired, etc. The cast is an ensemble that doesn't have to rely on star power so there wouldn't be that albatross around the neck to potentially ruin its success. And there's a plethora of topics to choose from or rip from the headlines. A certain real estate magnate and the unsavory characters surrounding him could provide many, many plot lines.

by Anonymousreply 120June 14, 2018 5:34 PM

Art Branch was an interesting character that reflected the reactionary hawkish mentality after 9/11, even in places like NYC.

by Anonymousreply 121June 14, 2018 5:35 PM

Crime is down in NYC. They should make a show about one of those horrible flyover states. Lots of crime there. Good chance for fat, ugly actors to get cast!

I just caught S7E23 ‘Terminal’ on the Sundance marathon

That was definitely peak mothership

by Anonymousreply 126June 14, 2018 9:27 PM

The writing was excellent in the first 6 or 7 seasons. And the guest defense attorneys had flair and could act.

by Anonymousreply 127June 14, 2018 10:12 PM

Why does ION only broadcast the post-Mike Logan L&O episodes?

by Anonymousreply 128June 14, 2018 10:37 PM

They're probably packaged that way -- networks/stations buy the rights to certain packages.

by Anonymousreply 129June 14, 2018 10:40 PM

Well, their packaging is stupid.

by Anonymousreply 130June 14, 2018 10:41 PM

In Canada, the only episodes of L&O:SVU that are shown in syndication are the ones from the periods 1999-2006 and 2015-2017, which is odd. They keep cycling through those, completely skipping almost a decade between them.

by Anonymousreply 131June 14, 2018 10:53 PM

S8E3 ‘Navy Blues’ guest starring Kate Walsh as the disgraced navy ‘top gun’ is on Sundance right now!

by Anonymousreply 132June 14, 2018 11:03 PM

Patti Lupone as a defense lawyer. "HOW DARE YOU!! HOW FUCKING DARE YOU!!!!!"

by Anonymousreply 133June 14, 2018 11:13 PM

She did it r132.

by Anonymousreply 134June 14, 2018 11:17 PM

😂 Damn, I spent all day watching the marathon on Ion yesterday now here we go again.

by Anonymousreply 135June 14, 2018 11:18 PM

Isn't this the show Christopher Meloni and his buxom, ample buttocks were on? I saw parts of a few episodes only to see if they would show his ass and damned if all the camera shots of him were from the waist up or he had a loose fitting jacket on obscuring his buttcheeks. Just for that I always hated that show. If only there had been an episode where Chris fucks up and as a penalty everyone, man or woman, gets to cop a feel of and/or smack that booty of his.

by Anonymousreply 136June 14, 2018 11:40 PM

Harmon was the worst. Just bitchy. Hennessy and Lowell were excellent. I liked Farina and Thompson was surprisingly good and consistent. I couldn’t stand watching Sisto.

Sam Waterston and Jerry Orbach really shined in their roles.

Law and Order got cancelled because Meloni left the show.

by Anonymousreply 143June 15, 2018 12:23 AM

Meloni was on SVU, not the mother show. He left after season 12, which is when the show really started going to crap. He allegedly left over a salary dispute but there were a lot of rumors that he had had enough of Mariska.

by Anonymousreply 144June 15, 2018 12:27 AM

[quote]Isn't this the show Christopher Meloni and his buxom, ample buttocks were on?

No, Chris was on Law & Order: SVU with Mariska, not the original L&O series. There were actually FOUR L&O series.

R114, you wrote, in repsonse to my post, "Yes. She should not work instead of work. Your logic is impeccable."

Okay, I stand, somewhat, corrected. It's true she should keep working... it's just that I find it hard to believe that Chicago: Med is ALL that she has been offered! If the people who create programs are not offering her roles in better programs, it's a real shame.

Yes, there's a lot of male eye-candy on Med (a hospital where every orderly, nurse, tech, or surgeon) has there their work outfit (or scrubs) tailored to an inch of the actor's body. Another ridiculous aspect of a crap program.

I loved Elizabeth Rohm. Her final line when fired was..."Is it because I'm a lesbian?"

by Anonymousreply 151June 15, 2018 3:02 PM

R151... I think that line caused every head of a L&O fan to simultaneously explode... never had Serena's character even been implied that she was gay.

God, i think that was some of the crappiest writing ever on the program!

by Anonymousreply 152June 15, 2018 4:06 PM

r152, From Wikipedia:

Röhm left the show in the middle of the fifteenth season, and made her last appearance in the episode "Ain't No Love." She was replaced by Alexandra Borgia (Annie Parisse).

Her departure was noteworthy due to a surprising[3] conversation between Southerlyn and Branch in the very last scene of the episode. At the close of the show, Branch dismisses Southerlyn because he feels she is too sympathetic toward defendants, and that her emotions get in the way of looking at the facts. A stunned Southerlyn pauses for a moment, then asks, "Is this because I'm a lesbian?" Taken aback by the accusation, Branch protests, "No. Of course not. No." Her final line is "Good.... Good."[4]

This is the first and only instance that Southerlyn's homosexuality was ever explicitly mentioned,[3] although there had been subtle hints in earlier episodes.

In the 2003 episode "Mother's Day," Southerlyn is asked out for coffee by the female defense attorney, and later the same woman asks her out for drinks.[5] In the 2004 episode "Gov Love," she is uncomfortable with a case in which McCoy successfully seeks to have same-sex marriage declared illegal in New York in order to get testimony from a gay defendant's spouse. Southerlyn had objected to this and refused to assist McCoy, but her sexual orientation was never mentioned.[6]

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 153June 15, 2018 4:13 PM

There was also an episode where Southerlyn protests when McCoy threatens to out a teen in open court to compel her to testify.

While you don’t have to be gay to find that tactic questionable, it certainly fits the narrative of dropping hints about her sexuality.

by Anonymousreply 154June 15, 2018 5:09 PM

Anybody remembers Michael Moriarty, the original DA? Well, it turned out he was Roseanne before Roseanne:

[quote] Today, Moriarty's interest in right-wing politics is as intense as ever, and he is actively campaigning for the total abolition of abortion in the United States and the repeal of the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion.

[quote] Moriarty says he now lives happily away from the limelight: he contributes a weekly column to Enter Stage Right, a Canadian webzine of conservative political commentary. Moriarty’s views gain even wider exposure in Andrew Breitbart’s ultra-conservative Big Hollywood webzine.

by Anonymousreply 202June 16, 2018 9:01 PM

I worked on the L&O crew on and off during its entire run. Waterston was an insufferable, snobby little prick. Only deigned to speak to the other actors in his scenes. Epatha had big time potty mouth but was friendly. Bratt was OK. Jill Hennessey was delightful. Angie Harmon less so. Carey was a stick of wood. Ro could often be a pain in the ass and we always bitched behind her back how the only reason she wasn’t fired after her disastrous first season was that Wolf was very good pals with her rich daddy. Roache and De la Garza were wonderful. Fred Thompson never bothered to learn his fucking lines. Dianne Wiest was miserable from Day 1 and tried very hard to hide. Anthony Anderson was an obnoxious piece of shit who brought in one of his “boys” to be his stand-in and the guy was dumb as a bag of rocks. And Chris Noth was, at least, consistent-he was a complete and utter asshole the entire time he was on there. They finally canned him on CI because they had enough of his shit.

What about Jesse L Martin & Jeremy Sisto, R203?

by Anonymousreply 206June 16, 2018 9:29 PM

R203, I've worked with some famous people over the years, I work I advertising.

Sometimes it's best not to know too much about how a celebrity acts in real life. Because, for many, knowing too much does change a fan's opinion about them. When a person hears how horrible a celeb is in real life, it makes them start to dislike the celebrity's acting or musical talent. We need to try and separate the two.

It's usually best to never build up the people we admire, most of us will be incredibly disappointed. These people should not be held up to higher standard to begin with, we should simply enjoy their talent. Never meet your heroes has always been a motto of mine.

Thanks for your behind the scenes info anyway.

by Anonymousreply 207June 16, 2018 9:29 PM

R206, Jesse Martin was GREAT. A real charmer and a very nice guy. Sisto was fine. Farina knew he wasn’t a good fit for the show-he might as well had CHICAGO emblazoned on his forehead and L&O was a NEW YORK show. We all coveted his character’s incredibly beautiful pale blue coat, though.

by Anonymousreply 208June 16, 2018 9:33 PM

And Jerry was, of course, beloved by everybody. He was just the consummate professional and a fine human being. I had the terriblly dubious distinction if being on the set of the very last day he ever worked. This was on Law & Order:Trial by Jury. He could barely walk, hardly eat and his complexion had a tint of green to it. They had to totally scrap that entire days footage. So sad. Scott Cohen was on set as his “replacement” a week later. Jerry passed away about six weeks after his last day of work. A legend. As was Gregory Hines, who was a defense attornney for several episodes on the Mother Ship. After he died they painted a tiny circle under the defense table in the courtroom set and if you looked real closely you could see “Gregory Hines danced here.”

by Anonymousreply 209June 16, 2018 9:44 PM

R203, have you worked on anything else filmed in NYC, like an HBO series, such as The Night Of? British actor Riz Ahmed gets a lot of extremely positive press. People go on about him being extremely intelligent and always nice to everyone on the sets he's worked on. He seems too good to be true. Hard to believe anyone in showbiz is that decent to everyone. To me, he gives off a pompous vibe.

by Anonymousreply 210June 16, 2018 9:44 PM

R210, I’ve worked on TV and film projects here in NYC over the past 40 years. I didn’t work on The Night Of, though, sorry.

My absolute favorites among actors on sets in terms of being lovely, nice, friendly people have been Roache, de la Garza, Hennessey, Dianne Neal (SVU), Emma Thompson, Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Hugh Jackman. These are the ones who stand out for me. Most actors are fine and I give them a lot of leeway in terms of friendliness. They often are dealing with a lot of shit.

by Anonymousreply 214June 16, 2018 10:28 PM

R214, Hill was largely a blank. He was neither nasty nor friendly. He was just THERE. I think he was a rabbi, too, so had to be off the set by sundown on Fridays. That was often a pain in the ass.

Speaking of pains in the asses Patti LuPone was being considered as the next DA after Hill left. Glenn Close turned it down. LuPone was nixed after the crew openly voiced their objections about her to Wolf. Waterston lobbied for Wiest and he got his way. Wiest didn’t do her homework on what her role would be like on the type of show L&O was. Every single scene was going to be her listening to the ADAs and advising them on what they should do. No histrionics, no tears, no drama, nothing. Wiest staggered through the season, blew up like a balloon and left as soon as she could.

by Anonymousreply 215June 16, 2018 10:38 PM

Yes R203, I heard Julianne Moore is a doll. In fact, she was at some art NYC gallery event a few months ago with a male friend and was hanging with Riz Ahmed, so maybe he is actually a good guy. John Turturro also gets props for being a nice guy and he bonded with Riz during The Night Of, they are now friends. Riz calls John his "Italian uncle". I saw John at Riz's concert at Webster Hall last year. John and his wife live in Brooklyn. Think one of their sons is gay.

Yes, R228, he was technically born in Manchester (because his father was doing Coronation Street up there) but a few years afterward he, his mother and little sister Vanya moved back to London. Linus went to primary school in London and then boarding school in Chichester. Neither are anywhere near Manchester. Vanya sadly passed away a few months ago. Linus is a really lovely guy. He’s happily married to a British actress named Rosalind, they now live in upstate NY and they apparently never had any interest in having children. His father really did a number on his first wife and kids-in his autobiography they’re hardly mentioned. It took a long time for Linus to reconcile with him.

by Anonymousreply 230June 17, 2018 6:02 AM

R203, Of course, I realize London and Chichester are not near Manchester. I simply posted where Linus was born. I'm British, I no longer live there, but I know a bit about my country. LOL

by Anonymousreply 231June 17, 2018 11:43 AM

Hah, OK, R231. I was just correcting whoever posted he was “from Manchester.” I wish Linus would go back onstage. I’d love to see him on Broadway. He did a large amount of work with the RSC but stopped to concentrate on film and TV.

by Anonymousreply 232June 17, 2018 1:44 PM

I would have been his altar boy in 1994. If only he had asked.

by Anonymousreply 233June 17, 2018 1:58 PM

Roche was great in Middletown a few years back. Surprised he does not do more plays.

by Anonymousreply 234June 17, 2018 2:00 PM

Roche was boring.

by Anonymousreply 235June 17, 2018 2:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 241June 17, 2018 5:41 PM

[quote]LuPone was nixed after the crew openly voiced their objections about her to Wolf.

Fun fact: "Lupo" means "wolf" in Italian. And later on, Jeremy Sisto's character was named "Lupo."

by Anonymousreply 242June 17, 2018 7:26 PM

r242 As Hill left in 2000, I doubt Lupo got to opine on the hiring of Lupone.

by Anonymousreply 243June 17, 2018 7:30 PM

Jeremy Sisto made his first appearance on the show playing a defense attorney in the final episode of season 17. He was back as Lupo in the very next episode, the season 18 opener.

Julia Roberts was a cunt on set that time she did a guest spot because she was getting banged by Bratt. And Elaine Stritch was even cuntier-we felt so sorry for the production assistants who had to put up with her. I can never unsee Stritch pulling down her tights to give herself an insulin injection-at THE DEFENSE TABLE IN THE COURTROOM SET.

by Anonymousreply 247June 17, 2018 8:36 PM

Oh, my R247!

I must say though, she was great as the feminist lawyer for Felicity Huffman who was on trial for murdering a John from her suburban Frau escort service!

by Anonymousreply 248June 17, 2018 8:49 PM

[quote] I was just correcting whoever posted he was “from Manchester.”

Why are you "correcting" true information?!

Linus was BORN in Manchester, Why argue about the truth? The initial post mentioning Manchester was not about where he was raised, lived or went to school. The initial post simply stated he was from Manchester, because that is exactly where Linus was born. This is such a absurd argument. Most celebrities, and regular people, don't always stay in the cities of their birth.

by Anonymousreply 249June 17, 2018 8:50 PM

On another note, is it true S Epatha was leaving after season 20 regardless and Kat Erbe as Eames was set to slide over and be the new Lt at the 27th?

by Anonymousreply 250June 17, 2018 8:51 PM

Yes, 250. She told Wolf and the other producers a year before her contract was up that she wouldn't be returning and they showed their appreciation for both her heads-up and her years of sterling performances by giving her that cancer story arc the final season.

by Anonymousreply 251June 17, 2018 8:58 PM

That was one hell of an arc, r251.

by Anonymousreply 252June 17, 2018 9:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 253June 17, 2018 9:05 PM

Saw Idris Elba on an old L&O this morning, he was barely on for 5 minutes.

I really enjoy watching the older episodes and recognizing so many performers who went on to become very famous. I remember an episode with Viola Davis as an insane cop, or was it an auxiliary cop? The character was so evil. What amazing acting.

by Anonymousreply 254June 17, 2018 9:06 PM

No. She wanted to play a character who has her own real first name, Sharon.

R203 Did you ever work with Chris Meloni? What was he like? I loved him on Oz, but I could never warm to him as Stabler. He seemed miserable the last few seasons he was on SVU, but I was still surprised when he turned down all that money and quit.

by Anonymousreply 257June 17, 2018 9:21 PM

Whatever R254, this thread is getting way too anal. Yeah, we know, you worked on the show for a million years, how many times have you mentioned that already?

If you're not the same person who keeps posting the L&O gossip, well, not all of us can remember the minute details about which L&O these performers worked on specifically, most of us have actual lives.

by Anonymousreply 258June 17, 2018 9:23 PM

by Anonymousreply 263June 17, 2018 9:32 PM

Yes, R257, unfortunately. He’s an asshole. He threw a chair once in the squadroom during a temper tantrum once. I guess his frustration over being “stuck” in a procedural show was getting to him.

George Dzundza was fired from the Mother Ship for being a troublemaking bastard. Richard Brooks was fired for being a stick of wood on camera despite being very handsome-he wasn’t told that he’d be returning for another season until about a month before it started up again. Not cool. Everyone hated Paul Sorvino-he’d suddenly burst into an operatic aria on your ass at the crafty table as you toasted a bagel. Thank God they got rid of him. Moriarty was fine but definitely troubled. It was well known he’d been hospitalized for a nervous breakdown back in the early 70s. He called Janet Reno “Hitler” on a CNBC talkshow following Waco and was told never to do anything like it again. He went right ahead and did it again. Bye bye Ben Stone.

by Anonymousreply 264June 17, 2018 9:42 PM

Too bad about Meloni. Maybe there are some experiences that just aren’t worth the money. That’s no excuse to be an asshole though.

Thanks for all the good gossip R203!

by Anonymousreply 266June 17, 2018 10:17 PM

[quote]I know it's just a story, but I'm glad they gave her closure and a cure.

Yeah cause it seemed the producers really didn't like their own characters, lots of them had bad endings. I know it's a drama show but I thought they would kill her off too. S. & Ernie Hudson deserved Emmys for that arc.

R 249, yes, many people do not stay in the place they were born. That is why even though Roche was born in Manchester, it is not really accurate to say he was from there. You cannot assume that someone is from the city they were born in.

I myself was born in France, but came to the US as an infant. I cannot speak French, have never visited France (since I was 4 months old), and do not really know the culture. I was born in France, but I am not from there.

by Anonymousreply 268June 17, 2018 10:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 270June 17, 2018 10:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 271June 17, 2018 10:49 PM

Yet again, this statement makes zero sense, especially this: "You cannot assume that someone is from the city they were born in." WTF does that even mean?

The place where you were born is usually when you are originally from. I was born in London, mostly raised in Brooklyn. If someone asks where I'm from, I tell them, I was born in London, because that's where I was born. It is as simple as that. Over the years I've been back there several times. Brooklyn is not my hometown, even though I grew up there, it's not my birth place. How difficult is that to comprehend?!

London is where I am originally from and France is actually where you are originally from, no amount of spin is going to chance those facts. LOL

by Anonymousreply 273June 17, 2018 10:53 PM

The Roche Manchester team is going to bore us to death if it's the last thing each of them ever does.

by Anonymousreply 274June 17, 2018 10:55 PM

No, R273. You’re wrong. I was born in NYC and spent my childhood/teen years on Long Island. I would never say I was “from NYC.” Give it up, already.

Poor Annie Parrisse. They fucking fried her hair daily to give her a look they thought was attractive and because she dared to speak her mind to Wolf they gave her character that grisly exit. Awful.

by Anonymousreply 275June 17, 2018 11:12 PM

I thought Annie Parrisse was ok on Law & Order

I didn't really like Erbe on Criminal Intent. I didn't hate her, but I didn't like her. I didn't like Angie Harmon. She is pretty but I thought she was not believable in the role.

by Anonymousreply 276June 17, 2018 11:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 286June 18, 2018 1:13 AM

Hah, R286, I loved Mickey on The Comeback but I’m a tad more svelte. And a helluva lot more butch.

I don’t give a shit if any individuals out there think I made anything up. I haven’t. These are my perceptions from my experiences. If you don’t care for them then block me, bitches.

One enduring Epatha memory was when she dressed up as Santa Claus for our annual holidays lunch the last day before our break. She was hilarious and always managed to work in stuff about her menopausal hot flashes which seemed to be torturing her over a period of several years.

by Anonymousreply 287June 18, 2018 1:21 AM

R203, if you're still reading this thread, maybe you can share a bit more about the show... I have a friend who many years ago was a stand-in in NYC and worked on a number of L&O episodes - this was around the time when Angie Harmon joined the cast.

One reason why my friend enjoyed working on L&O was that so many of the guests and cast members were musical theater people that there was often singing of pieces from shows in between shooting - true? She enjoyed the comraderie Jerry and Jessie and others shared.

by Anonymousreply 290June 19, 2018 6:04 PM

Regular L&O.

Right now these are also the last two episodes before the arrival of Jack McCoy, who comes on at 5pm EST. Season 5 episode 1, “Second Opinion.” Originally premiered September 21, 1994.

This show was much weaker without Sam Waterston.

by Anonymousreply 291June 19, 2018 7:02 PM

R288, to be honest I don’t remember any guest stars singing and dancing between takes. God knows Patti LuPone wasn’t because she was too busy whining at the prop department that her briefcase was too heavy.

One wonderful moment happened on Trial by Jury, though-Bebe Neuwirth had hip replacement surgery and was using a cane between takes. One time, before he became too ill, Jerry took her cane and performed a soft shoe routine for us. Damn, he was a special guy.

by Anonymousreply 292June 19, 2018 7:27 PM

Thank you so much for your stories, r292 r203.

by Anonymousreply 293June 19, 2018 9:12 PM

Michael Moriarity was awful. Sam Waterston must have been a breath of fresh air when Jack McCoy came into the picture. He was a gem from the first episode.

by Anonymousreply 294June 19, 2018 9:33 PM

S. Epatha Merkerson recounted enjoying Orbach and Jesse Martin singing show tunes between takes.

by Anonymousreply 295June 19, 2018 10:42 PM

Jesse is homosexual, yes?

by Anonymousreply 296June 20, 2018 12:41 AM

Is Jessie Martin a B'way performer? I didn't know that if he is. As a youngster, Orbach I saw many times on stage and adored him. I just knew he would be one of the rare actors who was a wonderful off as on. I appreciate those stories about him very much too. They don't make them like him anymore, haven't for decades. What I once read about Martin is that he's godfather to the son of the soap actor Roger Howarth. That was a surprising connection, that they even knew each other. I think it said Howarth's son was born in the early 90s so they must have been friends before either got well known on TV.

by Anonymousreply 300June 20, 2018 3:03 AM

I liked Michael Moriarty on the show. He was so serious. I’d rather watch the early Waterston years, though.

by Anonymousreply 301June 20, 2018 3:13 AM

Next marathon starts at 11 on Ion. Fast forwards 10 years to the Dennis Farina episodes.

by Anonymousreply 302June 20, 2018 1:35 PM

Haven’t watched any L&O today. Looks like I’m finally tapped out. 😂

by Anonymousreply 303June 20, 2018 7:09 PM

No more Dennis Farina for me. Plus I have to finish season 2 of Goliath.

by Anonymousreply 304June 20, 2018 8:00 PM

The ION reruns aren't really a marathon as we usually think of one. ION's regular schedule is to strip-run episodes of various shows on a regular weekly schedule. Monday and Tuesday is Criminal Minds, Wednesday is L&O, Thursday is Blue Bloods, etc. Up to 14 episodes a day, in order. When you go through that many in one day, you go throw the whole show fairly quickly.

The problem with ION's L&O reruns is that they start with season 13, Ohrbach's next to last season. Nothing earlier.

by Anonymousreply 305June 20, 2018 8:29 PM

by Anonymousreply 307June 20, 2018 8:45 PM

The crew must have loved the episode where she got blown up and you last see her being wheeled away by the paramedics with her face covered by a mask.

by Anonymousreply 308June 20, 2018 8:58 PM

Here’s something interesting I vaguely remember posting a few years ago on another thread:

In 2001 there was going to be a Law & Order miniseries with the casts of the Mother Ship, SVU and CI all included. There was to be a chemical attack on the NYC subway. Green (Jesse Martin)’s dad was to be among the dead. It was to emerge that the attack was carried out by Arab Muslims but funded by a wealthy South African woman (to be played by Natasha Richardson) who was enraged about Bush’s failure to live up to his promise to help AIDS sufferers in Africa. It was supposed to start shooting in early October. 9/11 happened and that was that, the miniseries was scrapped. By the way there were no L&O series shooting on 9/11-very few things were shooting in NY on that day because a writers strike had forced many productions to postpone their start dates until late September/early October. I think only the NBC series Ed and some cable series produced by Sidney Lumet was shot that day and neither were anywhere near Ground Zero.

by Anonymousreply 334July 15, 2018 10:42 PM

Sometimes, in the beginning, Rohm would emphasize the wrong word in a sentence. I don’t know whether she got better.

by Anonymousreply 335July 16, 2018 12:22 AM

Rohm's best acting was on one of those cable ghost shows where famous people talk about their encounters with the supernatural.

I forgot her full story, but it was really dramatic. She moved into a haunted house, it was a rental. Her dog started acting really bizarre, that's how she initially knew the house was haunted. Wish I remembered the name of the series. Think it was on A&E or Destination America. It was just her telling her story, the reenactments were with a real actress. LOL

[quote]Rohm's best acting was on one of those cable ghost shows where famous people talk about their encounters with the supernatural....I forgot her full story, but it was really dramatic. She moved into a haunted house, it was a rental. Her dog started acting really bizarre, that's how she initially knew the house was haunted. Wish I remembered the name of the series. Think it was on A&E or Destination America. It was just her telling her story, the reenactments were with a real actress. LOL

It was "Celebrity Ghost Story" and she did a follow up on "The Haunting Of...." It wasn't a rental, she bought a summer home in The Hamptons and it was haunted.
