NHL star’s wife accuses teammate’s girlfriend of shocking harassment

This is quite the story.

The wife of Senators captain Erik Karlsson has taken legal action against the girlfriend of one of his teammates for alleged social media posts wishing death and pain upon their family.

Melinda Karlsson, who wed Erik last August, filed an order of protection last month against Monika Caryk, the longtime girlfriend of winger Mike Hoffman, accusing her of threatening and harassing the couple before and after their unborn son’s death in March, according to the Ottawa Citizen. The peace bond application — which is similar to a restraining order — said Caryk had been using social media to target them since November 2017, the same month the couple announced they were expecting their first child.

Melinda revealed the disturbing details of Caryk’s alleged harassment in a sworn statement to the court.

“Monika Caryk has uttered numerous statements wishing my unborn child dead,” Karlsson said. “She also uttered that she wished I was dead and that someone should ‘take out’ my husband’s legs to ‘end his career.’

“Monika Caryk has posted over 1,000 negative and derogatory statements about me as a professional.”

Modal Trigger Hoffman and Karlsson convene during a 2016 game.Getty Images The Senators announced on Tuesday they have opened an investigation into the Karlssons’ accusations.

“We are investigating this matter in co-operation with the NHL and will take whatever steps are necessary to protect the safety and privacy of our players and their families,” the team said in a statement.

It’s unclear why the Karlssons are convinced that Caryk is behind the cyber attacks.

Hoffman, Karlsson’s Senators teammate of seven years, passionately denied the allegations, when reached by the Citizen, and offered to help track down the perpetrator(s).

“There is a 150-percent chance that my fianceé Monika and I are not involved in any of the accusations that have been pursued (that are) coming our way. We totally understand there’s no place for cyberbullying,” Hoffman said in a statement. “We’ve offered to cooperate and do anything it takes to find out who is doing this, and support (the Karlssons). Obviously this is a tough time that they’re going through, and we want to find out who is doing this, because for some reason it’s coming into our court, and it’s 150 percent that it’s not us.

“We have nothing to hide. We’re willing to cooperate in any way to solve this and figure it out, and prove that it wasn’t us.”

One of the social media posts under question came the day Erik Karlsson revealed on Instagram that he and Melinda had lost their unborn son, whom they planned to name Axel Michael. In the comments section, a user with the handle @sanddandy45 blamed the boy’s death on Melinda’s taking painkillers during pregnancy, which Erik quickly shot down with an accusation of his own.

“I feel bad for the baby he didn’t have a chance with Melinda popping pain killer medication everyday,” the comment read.

“How dare you,” Erik Karlsson replied in the March 21 post. “You have been making fake accounts and buying hacked ones for months to harass me and my wife but this is an all new low even for you. You are a disgusting person.”

A separate account, by the name of @petersonmegan51, was also used to harass Melinda Karlsson in reference an anti-bullying event, according to the newspaper.

Karlsson, one of the league’s top defensemen at 28, could soon be on his way out of Ottawa with his contract set to expire after next season and trade rumors swirling. Meanwhile, Hoffman, also 28, has proven himself as one of the Senators’ best scoring threats and has two more years left on the four-year, $20.75 million extension he signed after the 2015-16 season.

If wishing someone's child were dead was a crime, well....

by Anonymousreply 1June 13, 2018 5:02 AM

Why does the woman have such a problem with Erik and his wife?

by Anonymousreply 2June 13, 2018 5:02 AM

It's weird because there's no motive, unless there's a jealousy issue between the guys. Maybe some Canadians can shed more light on this. Either way, if I was her fiancé I would run the other way.

by Anonymousreply 3June 13, 2018 5:08 AM

Hoffman continuing the sportsmen's tradition at being crap at math.

by Anonymousreply 4June 13, 2018 5:15 AM

Breeder drama.

by Anonymousreply 5June 13, 2018 5:30 AM

I blame Andy Cohen and all the Real Housewives

by Anonymousreply 6June 13, 2018 5:44 AM

Yes discussed on the NHL thread.

The woman sounds batshit, but I wonder if they went public with this to get in front of the accusation the womanmade that she allegedly has a painkiller addiction, and that's why they lost the baby.

I'd heard rumours about that separate from this situation.

by Anonymousreply 7June 13, 2018 6:53 AM

Also, the fact that the bond wasn't granted is interesting. It has to reach a threshold of a fear for safety, not just a particularly intense Mean Girls drama.

by Anonymousreply 8June 13, 2018 6:55 AM

I don't know what to think about this one. They both have terrible ratty extensions.

by Anonymousreply 9June 13, 2018 7:05 AM

I assume they won't be playing on the same team next season. I wonder if Hoffman was in it on it with her, if true of course.

by Anonymousreply 10June 13, 2018 4:42 PM

Rich white people problems

by Anonymousreply 11June 13, 2018 4:45 PM

I said this in the other thread, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that the wife was sending those threats and messages to herself for sympathy/attention.

by Anonymousreply 12June 13, 2018 4:49 PM

The fiance/accused looks mean in that picture with him. They both look like harpys. It's pretty sick to stalk someone and blame them for the death of their child.

by Anonymousreply 13June 13, 2018 4:55 PM

Unless it’s true.

by Anonymousreply 14June 13, 2018 4:58 PM

Why would it be, R14? It doesn't sound like the women knew each other well enough to be familiar with each other's drug habits.

by Anonymousreply 15June 13, 2018 4:59 PM

I have the hots for Erik Karlsson big time. For a couple years, and it was very sad when his son was stillborn, because he was so ready to be a dad.

by Anonymousreply 16June 13, 2018 5:08 PM

I always find it a little bit suspicious when someone takes a really roundabout way to say that they didn't do something rather than simply say they didn't do it.

by Anonymousreply 17June 13, 2018 5:08 PM

Who the hell cares? They're all breeders aka BORING.

by Anonymousreply 18June 13, 2018 7:34 PM

R12, BINGO.

by Anonymousreply 19June 13, 2018 7:42 PM

How did Karlsson know they were hacked accounts that were purchased?

This reminds me of one of those 48 Hours Mysteries where a woman set up another woman and claimed she was stalking and threatening her. The “stalker” went to prison for it, but her parents did some legwork and proved that the “victim” was the one sending the threats.

Crazy stuff. It’s possible.

by Anonymousreply 20June 13, 2018 8:13 PM

Oh come on, she lost a baby she already has sympathy. No way the wife sent those messages to herself. They could easily track it back to her too.

by Anonymousreply 21June 13, 2018 9:27 PM

Those messages were sent before the baby was stillborn, R21.

by Anonymousreply 22June 13, 2018 9:43 PM

R21, I’m just saying some people (especially women) are bugfuck crazy. The “victim” was the new girlfriend. She HAD the man, but still wanted to hurt the ex and set her up. Why?

The people who do this shit don’t have a rational motive, either. She lost a baby, which I can’t even imagine.

Anyway, maybe it’s what it seems. It just sounds like it could be one of those hoaxes.

by Anonymousreply 25June 14, 2018 1:27 AM

That second picture of that thick-lipped whore of a girlfriend made it very clear she's guilty as they say. Plus she has crazy eyes.

by Anonymousreply 26June 14, 2018 1:56 AM

Down-low ho's

by Anonymousreply 27June 14, 2018 1:57 AM

R24, read the article again.

[quote] The peace bond application — which is similar to a restraining order — said Caryk had been using social media to target them since November 2017, the same month the couple announced they were expecting their first child.

The messages began in November of 2017. I find it very strange that she was allegedly sending messages hoping for the death of the baby, and then the baby died??

I think the wife used socks and sent those messages to herself.

by Anonymousreply 28June 14, 2018 2:06 AM

I took an interrogation course and the instructor said when someone uses inflated percentages like 150% you can be pretty sure somethings up. He either knew about it or suspects that the girlfriend actually did it.

by Anonymousreply 29June 14, 2018 2:10 AM

R28, I think that’s a strong possibility. I’d love to know what the source of the acrimony is. There’s a lot more to this than what’s being discussed.

by Anonymousreply 30June 14, 2018 10:28 AM

Awww, too bad. Let's post photos of the menzes without shirts!

by Anonymousreply 31June 14, 2018 11:29 AM

why do so many athletes marry cheap looking women? they're all interchangeable, they have that ridiculous hair, they are vaguely attractive, but just barely - and dress like whores. Is that the appeal? what happens when the varnish rubs off?

by Anonymousreply 32June 14, 2018 12:08 PM

That's what happens, OP, when a love affair hits the rocks. A woman scorned...

by Anonymousreply 33June 14, 2018 12:45 PM

R33, do you think one of the women was involved with the other’s man?

If it all started with the pregnancy announcement, it makes perfect sense. Women get very weird about pregnancy. When I got pregnant, the women in my workplace treated me diffently. The women who were mothers welcomed me into their little sisterhood and sort of adopted me. Some of the older women who didn’t have children grew a little colder. One completely stopped speaking to me, which was difficult because we worked closely together on something; she sent email and left post-it notes but wouldn’t say a word to me unless it was absolutely urgent.

Women who want babies and can’t have them - it’s a very primal female thing. I really don’t think men can understand that particular thing.

Monika has been with that guy for ten years and still not married. Melinda was married and having a baby. She was also the wife of the captain. Monika was jealous and frustrated that this woman was getting everything she wanted. The pregnancy probably triggered her.

Or, Melinda is a psycho and wanted more sympathy. But of the two scenarios, jealousy is most likely.

by Anonymousreply 34June 14, 2018 1:55 PM

So Melinda starts getting messages wishing harm to her baby in Nov. of 2017, and then the baby ends up dead? That's far too coincidental in my book, especially if she did have an issue with drugs/addiction to painkillers. It's also odd how they're accusing this Monika but refuse to say what evidence they have against her. As far as the support from the other NHL wives and girlfriends goes, who knows what story they told and how many of these messages Melinda showed them, and apparently the two women supporting her aren't even in Ottawa anymore. This sounds like a hoax.

by Anonymousreply 35June 14, 2018 2:28 PM

[quote] I’m just saying some people (especially women) are bugfuck crazy.

We agree!

by Anonymousreply 36June 14, 2018 2:57 PM

R35, are you saying Melinda knew her baby might die?

I think it smells like a hoax, too, but can also see where there would be enough motive for it to be true. I absolutely believe that Melinda could have set herself up as a victim. It’s been done plenty of times - I have a bit of a fascination with the phenomenon and this one jumped out at me. People will do outrageous harm to themselves and blame it on someone they hate (usually women).

The thing that stuck out to me is that Karlsson said that someone purchased hacked accounts to send the messages. How did he know that? I am not too savvy with this stuff, so I didn’t know it was possible. (Did you guys know?) Do they have a private investigator on this?

I’d love to know more. I don’t think this is as straightforward as it seems.

by Anonymousreply 37June 14, 2018 3:00 PM

R36, I’m not talking about violent crime, which is overwhelmingly perpetrated by men. I’m talking about the “soft” assassination women do.

And I’m a woman. Nobody does psychological warfare like we do - especially against each other.

by Anonymousreply 38June 14, 2018 3:05 PM

Bitches be crazy. None more so than the wives/girlfriends of sports figures.

by Anonymousreply 39June 14, 2018 3:42 PM

Who do we cast in the Lifetime Original Movie - WORDS THAT KILL.

by Anonymousreply 40June 14, 2018 8:25 PM

R34, I meant the two women were, having an affair.

by Anonymousreply 41June 14, 2018 8:35 PM

R12 that’s what I’m thinking

by Anonymousreply 42June 14, 2018 8:44 PM

How do you say white trash in Canadian?

by Anonymousreply 43June 14, 2018 8:53 PM

R41, oh that’s a twist. Not where I was going, but it’s certainly possible.

by Anonymousreply 44June 14, 2018 11:14 PM

Note that the thrust of the DM article is that other team wives and girlfriends have publicly come out in support of Karlsson and one says that Caryk's actions "aren't surprising." If anybody has the real skinny, it would be these women.

by Anonymousreply 45June 14, 2018 11:52 PM

Those women are Melinda's friends, R45, and so far only two of them have come out to speak on her behalf and both of those women moved from Ottawa last November, exactly when these messages began.

Are these women Canadian or American imports?

by Anonymousreply 48June 15, 2018 12:13 AM

r46, the Ottowa Sun article you linked to says "several" and the DM article says "many" and quotes tweets from three.

by Anonymousreply 49June 15, 2018 12:21 AM

Both women look cheap, plastic and trashy, with monika looking worse. But a few posters on reddit who went to school with monika agree that she is a raging bitch.

by Anonymousreply 50June 15, 2018 12:55 AM

Bump for original thread.

by Anonymousreply 51June 15, 2018 12:38 PM

I’m waiting for more information on this. Anyone know?

by Anonymousreply 52June 15, 2018 12:57 PM

Here’s a comment on the story from The Ottawa Citizen, back in March:

“ Dixie Cooper Ownership and Esthetician at Beauty & The Brows This woman has also been harrassing me for years along with other women. I had contacted police about her while I was pregnant and she was telling me to get an abortion. I truly hope something is FINALLY done with her so this can all end!!!! The sad part is she has a little daughter and pregnant....”

by Anonymousreply 53June 15, 2018 1:26 PM

Wait, so Hoffman has kids with this woman? She sound deranged if all this true.

by Anonymousreply 54June 15, 2018 4:28 PM

R54, the thing about this comment is that it was 12 weeks ago. The article never mentioned Monika by name.

So Dixie Cooper knows whoever “sandydandy45” is? Is she just talking shit?

These comments followed the one I posted:

“ Cory Huff-Hay Parts Dept. at Hunt Club Nissan That’s horrible Dixie. Is this the same one that you were talking about a few months ago? Either way that’s disgusting Like · Reply · Mark as spam · 12w

Dixie Cooper Ownership and Esthetician at Beauty & The Brows Cory Huff-Hay yes unfortunately Like · Reply · Mark as spam · 12w”
