Why didn't Shani Wallis get good work after "Oliver!"?

She's so fine as Nancy--she's perfectly appealing looking, and she's got a great voice. Why didn't she do at least lots of work on Broadway and the West End afterwards?

I loved her in this. I cried like a baby when Bill killed her.

Wallis was Ok in the part, but her voice lacked essential maternal strength and grit. Too arch and studied--more Walt Disney than musical hall. It should've been Georgia Brown, the original Nancy.

She married her manager or agent, and I believe he was LA based; I saw them do a joint interview some years ago -- it sounded like he didn't want to move, but it seems to me like he wasn't the best agent for her career. I thought she was terrific in the film and wondered why she didn't work more over the years. She had started out in London and was hired for "Oliver!" after having been seen in the musical "A Time For Singing" based on the movie "How Green Was My Valley". It didn't run very long, but it was supposed to have had a very nice score. I recall that she did a regional production of "Oliver!" back in the early 80s or so that she was on a local commercial for -- at Westbury or Westchester Premier or something like that.

To add, "A Time For Singing" was on Broadway.

They even thought of using Shani for Mark Lester as well. She doesn't mention her suicide attempt.

She was in Follies in the Long Beach revival playing Sally and no one knew who she was and she didn't register at all.

Don't often hear an actor say that the reason they didn't work much was because they were living in L.A.

Her husband apparently said he wanted to live in LA, that's it. But then he couldn't get her gigs.
