I have noticed an abundance of celebrity news pieces and pointless hot bod porn threads. I mean, is there nothing else to talk about? I know for a fact that most people who are drawn to this website are in reality very sad and/or lonely individuals. We're all looking to connect, but I doubt it'll be in a Shawn Mendes's hot mussy thread. Yes, people are adults and they are going to do whatever the hell they want (we must all make our own choices in life) but I believe that there's an inordinate amount of pointless threads that talk about celebrities who will add nothing of value to our lives in comparison to self affirming, useful threads. I almost feel like the majority of datalounge has been hypnotized by the death of celebrity pieces on here. I have to often dig through the front page filth to find something worthwhile. Who else shares the same sentiment? There's a lot of depression and loneliness in the gay community...and celebrity posts aren't helping the status quo. However, I sense that this is what makes the most money for DL owners so they will keep encouraging this.
Datalounge And Fantasy - Sad, Really

Honey, if thinking about dick don't make you happy nothing will.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 9, 2018 9:13 PM |
What part of "gossip and pointless bitchery" don't you understand, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 9, 2018 9:20 PM |
Mendes, if nothing else, is a balm for the brain in the era of Trump.
More Mendes. Less Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 9, 2018 9:22 PM |
Don't fall for this idiot. He's made numerous threads and posts about the gay community being depressed and lonely.
And really, is there anybody more depressing and lonely than a troll who spends a Saturday afternoon trolling on a gay gossip board?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 9, 2018 9:22 PM |
If you don't like the threads, post something about a topic you DO like.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 9, 2018 9:23 PM |
OP is the Michfest killer.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 9, 2018 9:26 PM |
R2, you took the site's tagline literally. Logical people tend to do that. In essence, however, what I've learned is that people are primarily looking to connect, to be understood and appreciated, and to love and be loved. Even under the raging anger and bitchiness that's on full display here, most just want to genuinely connect and feel good. There aren't many gay forums that are this large, so it would make sense for the mods to encourage healthy discussions about being gay.
Side note - there are some really unhinged people on here. I am talking 5150. Really unfortunate. I am talking full on paranoia and psychotic responses and behavior. Lost in their minds, out of their minds. I wish they hadn't shut down the asylums. Bring them back. That's all.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 9, 2018 9:26 PM |
r8 there is skill involved in picking a Sure Jan gif! That is the low res slow version, not the smooth version.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 9, 2018 9:28 PM |
The lack of paragraph breaks in your post are making me sad, unhappy, and dizzy, Op.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 9, 2018 9:29 PM |
[quote]most just want to genuinely connect and feel good.
Biggest load of crap I have ever read on here, and I should know.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 9, 2018 9:29 PM |
I had similar thoughts as the OP. I can't remember the exact formula but it is something like "trash talk about people and things" "educated talk about ideas". It struck me how many of the threads were just pointless diarrhea about forgettable celebrities and how few threads were really about ideas and what that said about the people on the site and maybe gay people or just people in general.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 9, 2018 9:30 PM |
The Jacob Tobia thread, the Jazz Jenning and the two Bunnika/queer enby threads have all been deleted in the last few days. DL hath decreed dead and or closeted celebs it is.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 9, 2018 9:31 PM |
The OP is right
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 9, 2018 9:31 PM |
R5, he can complain AND post constructive threads. One doesn't have to exclusively do one. Nothing wrong with speaking one's mind. Everything doesn't have to be compartmentalized and orderly. And I actually think "whining" elicits interesting answers and may be a catalyst for change.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 9, 2018 9:31 PM |
DL has always inhabited celebrity and gossip world. I've been coming here since 2002.
(And FWIW, yes, it's a lovely Saturday afternoon. I'm not OP. I have a theatre date and late supper plans ahead of me, so I'm not some tragic obese shut-in.)
I miss the demented creativity of the old DL: let's be a Stevie Nicks video! Sumerian housewives! Ginny in Billing! All of it fluff, but quite entertaining and inspired fluff.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 9, 2018 9:33 PM |
Yeah, r15, and so far I'm not seeing any constructive threads from the OP?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 9, 2018 9:33 PM |
Oh my god your sanctimony is killing me.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 9, 2018 9:34 PM |
r15 but OP is posting this in order, presumably, for some sort of solution. He didn't mention any threads he posted that were ignored by people in favor of the celebrity threads. And as OP is entitled to his opinion, I am entitled to mine, so take your own advice there.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 9, 2018 9:34 PM |
Post an interesting thread that you have started OP, and then link here.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 9, 2018 9:34 PM |
There's hardly any gossip or wit left. DL is as lowbrow as it gets (I had no idea that so many gay men ardently watch reality TV!).
Aside from that, DL is a very murky place and I would not recommend it to anyone who deals with depression. This has nothing to do with being thin skinned, because nothing posted here can be taken personally; it's just the underlying nastiness of the place (some days are worse than others).
There is a number of unwell people who use DL (forums in general) to distract themselves from their pent up misery They seem to think that social norms do not apply when no one knows your name.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 9, 2018 9:35 PM |
r15 thinks there will be a "catalyst for change" from one whiny and judgmental thread. I feel my DNA changing! Changing... changing!!!
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 9, 2018 9:35 PM |
[quote] There is a number of unwell people who use DL (forums in general) to distract themselves from their pent up misery They seem to think that social norms do not apply when no one knows your name.
Your English is bad, and very weird.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 9, 2018 9:36 PM |
Who looks for deep connections on an anonymous message board? The OP wants something this medium is not able to provide.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 9, 2018 9:38 PM |
Following social norms = not telling people to kill themselves
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 9, 2018 9:38 PM |
So glad I polished my breastplates the other day, you never know when an OP like this will scale the wall.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 9, 2018 9:42 PM |
R24, you're reading too much into the OP's observation. Not deep human connections, but a sense of...brotherhood? Or sisterhood? Not cutting each other down at the slightest perceived provocation. The mods know that they can control the narrative and what goes on this forum. But, if they did that, and made it nice (hey tacky Dorinda) people would leave in droves. Ugliness and drama brings in more money...but at what cost?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 9, 2018 9:42 PM |
r27, WE LIKE IT THIS WAY.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 9, 2018 9:45 PM |
LOL. R21 is triggered and sockpuppeting on the "Russian men have tiny dicks" thread. You can tell by his overuse of parentheses.
[quote] [R86] Not sure where the triggered comes from, as I haven't even mentioned the murderer (until now). All I said is that the victim was fugly. And she fucking was (see further proof below).
[quote] Boy, that election has sure broken the brains of Americans. Not that they ever knew what they were talking about, but the level of incoherence and insanity is now unsurpassed, and it's not limited to the Right anymore. For example, if I were triggered by you people saying that Russians have tiny meat, why would I post a map proving just that point?
[quote] Americans, so unicellular.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 9, 2018 9:47 PM |
r27 I agree trolls suck, but I think this site probably barely makes enough money as-is without affording a full-time moderator. They've deleted some of the more interesting and hilarious threads lately, like the ENBY thread, so I think they already have kind of a heavy-handed approach when it comes to that. What you're asking for would require a light touch and a much more active moderator.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 9, 2018 9:49 PM |
[quote] in comparison to self affirming, useful threads.
Dafuq I look like to you, Stewart Smalley?
FOH!
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 9, 2018 9:52 PM |
r30, your moderate and even-handed reply to the OP neglected to tell her to fuck off.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 9, 2018 9:53 PM |
What are some examples of these affirming, useful threads you guys are speaking of? Just curious.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 9, 2018 9:53 PM |
Well, the meatloaf threads are pretty good.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 9, 2018 9:55 PM |
I loved the thread with film of NYC at the turn of the century
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 9, 2018 9:56 PM |
I come here for the threads like the New York Social Diary threads, Tasteful Friends (real estate wags), Tasteful Possessions of the Upper Classes sort of stuff.
Also I enjoy the Ethel Merman threads (old time movie stars).
Pretty much topics that my friends and acquaintances don't cover because none of us are New England or New York socialites.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 9, 2018 9:57 PM |
R35, which one?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 9, 2018 9:57 PM |
I also like the threads where we snigger at the misfortunes of incredibly stupid people--like the Teacher from Ontario thread.
BTW, what happened to the DL poster who used to post poems in every thread? I loved that guy.
(Again, I do have a life and friends, but none of them know anything about fashion, the arts, old movies, etc. I also LOVE Mathra Stewart/Ina Garten-type threads.)

by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 9, 2018 10:00 PM |
What r2 said.
This isn't a dating website OP. It is anonymous and we can't even message each other. You seem to want DL to be something it is absolutely not meant to be.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 9, 2018 10:00 PM |
OP, is the sad, depressed troll desperate to find someone for a suicide pact so he can claim that he made someone kill himself.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 9, 2018 10:00 PM |
If you want deep connections OP, then you start the kind of thread that inspires that instead of sitting on your high horse. I'm always surprised by what threads I find fascinating here, it's never the ones I expect. I was enthralled by a thread on comic book artists a while back, and thoroughly impressed with the level of knowledge by posters here.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 9, 2018 10:05 PM |
Hunny-Bunny, Op, you need to brush your hair, put on some blush, lipstick, earrings, and a dab of perfume, and hustle your pretty self over to visit the DL "Pasta Draining," "Pound Cake," and the "My Neighbor is a Gargoyle" threads!
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 9, 2018 10:07 PM |
DL is what you make of it. There is enough of a variety to cover a wide range of topics. If you find yourselves depressed because you're on some Instaho thread, you are to blame since you made your way there.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 9, 2018 10:08 PM |
My English is fine, R23.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 9, 2018 10:10 PM |
[quote]. In essence, however, what I've learned is that people are primarily looking to connect, to be understood and appreciated, and to love and be loved.
NOBODY is coming to Datalounge for any of those things, ffs. That is what real life is for. Here, "gossip and pointless bitchery" are not just a tagline, they are the actual reasons we visit this site.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 9, 2018 10:11 PM |
r46 sums it up.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 9, 2018 10:13 PM |
[quote]The mods know that they can control the narrative and what goes on this forum. But, if they did that, and made it nice (hey tacky Dorinda) people would leave in droves.
Exactly! So what would be the point of doing it, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 9, 2018 10:14 PM |
DataLounge- for homosexuals who are as aspirational as the deplorables.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 9, 2018 10:14 PM |
Sometimes people do come here for life advice, when they're feeling low, etc, and I have seen many kind Dlers try to help them. But most of us are here for laughs.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 9, 2018 10:14 PM |
Where is the gossip, R46?
Bitchery without humor is tiresome.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | June 9, 2018 10:15 PM |
Can someone start a thread about this His Dark Materials tv show coming to the BBC soon? Squee!
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 9, 2018 10:16 PM |
OP, are you new here. DL has been like this forever.
There are actual many different types of topics here, you can simply avoid the porn and celebrity threads. It's not all that difficult. Personally, I enjoy the old products threads and the threads about defunct stores, such fun. I guess the 'youth' here cannot relate? They need to see endless threads about popstars, reality show freaks and large cocks. If you're not interested in those threads, there's sure not a gun to your head forcing you to read them.
Your focus should be on why there are so many pro-ReThug threads here since Dump got elected. Actually, these threads started before the election. You should be wondering about that, you know, something very serious. DL is now permeated by way too many hateful alt-right vile idiots.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 9, 2018 10:19 PM |
Not really, R47. There are frivolous topics to be had, but I have seen many interesting, thought-provoking threads on this site, as well as threads that really touched my heart. This is real life, spanning the spectrum, as it were. I would like to see more threads of intelligent discourse since we aren't all as shallow as you and R46 appear to be.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 9, 2018 10:19 PM |
R50 is right, there's plenty of heart here when need be. The recent "Goodnight DL" thread displays that beautifully.
OP, direct your sanctimony elsewhere and leave us, now.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 9, 2018 10:22 PM |
And look how that Goodnight DL op took advantage of our good nature!
by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 9, 2018 10:25 PM |
R56 What happened to him? Did he top himself
by Anonymous | reply 57 | June 9, 2018 10:33 PM |
People here were overwhelmingly kind and showed up for the OP of "Goodnight DL." From the sidelines, who knows what he ended up doing. Still I was struck by the replies, which were overall very warm and encouraging to him.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 9, 2018 10:35 PM |
R58 Agree, was very sweet.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | June 9, 2018 10:36 PM |
I ignored that thread because I figured what it was would be depressing.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | June 9, 2018 10:38 PM |
Op, why you mad?? Fix ya face, ain't my fault they all be jokin' !! (Keep Up !!) -
by Anonymous | reply 61 | June 9, 2018 10:38 PM |
R27 is OP.
Why are you talking about yourself in the third person?
Pussy.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | June 9, 2018 10:39 PM |
Ha! Good catch, R62. OP is talking to himself. Sounds like he is the unhinged one who can use an insane asylum.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | June 9, 2018 10:43 PM |
Sorry OP but I'm not lonely or depressed. Are you new here because it sounds like you have no idea what the DL is or how it works.
Gay male here and I've been coming to DL since 2004 when it was funny, funny, funny and there were a lot of very sharp and witty posters on Datalounge. Now - not so much because they are all gone.
Datalounge has always been a matter of selecting the threads that interest you and moving on from the threads you aren't interested in. Now... I've been as nice as possible to you and haven't called you a cunt, but don't push it.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 9, 2018 10:46 PM |
r64, the OP reads to me not like a person who needs an insane asylum, but rather a thirteen year old with a term paper due.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | June 9, 2018 10:47 PM |
[quote]Where is the gossip, [R46]?
The recent celebrity suicide threads have been pretty good.
[quote]Bitchery without humor is tiresome.
True, but there are still some funny, bitchy people here.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | June 9, 2018 10:51 PM |
I really don't get why people complain about there being no "worthwhile" topics? This a message board, if you want to discuss something "worthwhile" then you are more than welcome to pay your dues and start a thread! I know I post whatever the fuck I feel like and if others want to jump on, or not, I don't really care.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | June 9, 2018 10:55 PM |
I like you, R68. I really like you.
I can’t say “love” you yet, cause I don’t know if you’re rich.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | June 9, 2018 10:58 PM |
I would rather look at pictures of big, beautiful cocks than go on yet another message board that's geared towards teaching me a lesson or everything ending up in a debate.
Those threads I don't care for, I either skip or block. Perhaps you might try that, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | June 9, 2018 11:02 PM |
OP are you Todd?
by Anonymous | reply 71 | June 9, 2018 11:07 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 72 | June 9, 2018 11:13 PM |
R72 nope, try again!
by Anonymous | reply 73 | June 9, 2018 11:26 PM |
r73 your post doesn't make any sense. I clearly corrected myself, were you confused?
by Anonymous | reply 74 | June 9, 2018 11:32 PM |
It's the non-gossip threads that make DL so interesting.
Like someone will post something about the Byzantine Empire and there will be a valid scholarly discussion about the Byzantines and I'll learn something new.
It's easy enough to avoid threads you have no interest in OP
And yes, many of the posters on here are lonely and there's some serious Rip van Winkle-ism-- as if they went to sleep in 1987 and woke up last week and have zero reference point for anything that's happened in the past 30 years.
But indulging their nostalgic tendencies on DL is not a bad thing either. It helps them feel connected.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | June 9, 2018 11:40 PM |
R74 I'm clearly neither - if you checked.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | June 9, 2018 11:48 PM |

Crazy World, full of crazy contradictions, like a child
First you drive me wild, and then you win my heart with your wicked art...
by Anonymous | reply 78 | June 10, 2018 12:00 AM |
(oh r78 let me pick this up.)
And then you win my heart
With your wicked art.
One minute tender, gentle,
Then temp'ramental as a summer storm.
Just when I believe your heart's getting warmer,
You're cold and you're cruel,
And I, like a fool, try to cope,
Try to hang on to hope.
Crazy world,
Ev'ryday the same old roller coaster ride.
But I've got my pride,
I won't give in,
Even though I know I'll never win.
Oh, how I love this
Crazy world.

R65 "Gay male here and I've been coming to DL since 2004 when it was funny, funny, funny and there were a lot of very sharp and witty posters on Datalounge. Now - not so much because they are all gone."
They're gone everywhere else, too. People aren't as funny. It happens when they're looking at a tiny screen all day instead of talking to people. Or reading. People don't get a lot of the jokes any more because they have no points of reference to know what's funny.
And the demographic has changed, too: in a couple of weeks 2004 will be fifteen years ago. You are right - they are all gone.
