The equipment you need for hanging is readily available pretty much everywhere out side a jail cell. You don't have to drive to bridge, or acquire a lot of drugs, or buy a gun. It doesn't take has long as slitting your wrists. It can be done very impulsively.

The couple's parents and grandparents and extended family members had said at least they didn't suffer.

All this fuss about him leaving his 11 year-old daughter. Doesn't she have a mother to take care of her? Hard for a kid to lose her dad, of course but, somehow, he doesn't strike me as the good father type.

The trouble with suicide is that the sure fire methods that guarantee death are often messy and painful.

The "painless" and clean methods like pills and carbon monoxide poisoning are just as likely to turn you into a Terri Schiavo. Which would be even worse than death.

I have read a lot about suicide over the years, esp. suicides from the Golden Gate Bridge. This story stuck with me:

Two women, one in her early 20s, the other in her 40s, both came to the bridge to jump. They didn't know each other. They both climbed over the rail, sat on the chord, and chatted. When responders came to the scene to attempt a rescue, one jumped, and the second followed shortly thereafter.

Didn’t Robin Williams and Michael Hutchence also die this way? It seems a not unheard of celebrity mode of suicide.

"Suicide tends to be impulsive. If you can get a person through the moment of impulse, you may save their life.

A suicidal person needs a reality check reminder. Not “you have so much to live for” because that falls flat. Instead think of pushing guilt trigger buttons. “You will kill your mom. You can’t leave your kids without a dad. Your friends will blame themselves for not doing enough to help.”

Strangely, these statements work because you aren’t telling them that they have something to live for. Instead these triggers work because they still love their family and friends and don’t want to hurt them.

Remove any guns from the house and stay by your friend ‘s side. When someone is suicidal, you need to get them through that singular moment. Then, when you’ve gotten through the first moment, you need to get them through the next moment, and so on and so on until they begin to see their value again or they let someone help them.

Once you know your friend is contemplating suicide, you need to get the contact numbers of their mental health team. If they have a therapist or psychiatrist, let the people who are trained know what is going on. Friends/spouses of my clients worry that I am going to think they are being invasive and/or manipulative. You are not. I want to know.

I have clients that have tried to commit suicide. I’m not going to lie; I felt like a failure. But universally, when I have asked them why they didn’t reach out to me for help, they all have said, “Because you would have stopped me.” They intentionally didn’t reach out to me because they knew I would help them. So… CALL ME. Get them help.

If they do not yet have a therapist, get them to the doctor to ask for an antidepressant. Help them take the steps to find a therapist. They may be unable to take this action themselves and may claim they don’t need it. Remember: one of the signs of depression is exhaustion and the inability to do the things that will make you feel better. A good friend will take those steps with them."

The way most of them do it is not painful. They just put the noose around their necks after having taken enough drugs to render them unconscious. As they go unconscious the body goes limp, the noose tightens and they strangle to death never even knowing it. Very few people who hang themselves put a noose around their necks and jump off something high so that their bodies are no longer touching the ground.
