Found dead in Paris hotel room.
by Anonymous | reply 606 | June 8, 2018 9:05 PM |
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Anthony Bourdain, a gifted storyteller and writer who took CNN viewers around the world, has died. He was 61.
CNN confirmed Bourdain's death on Friday and said the cause of death was suicide.
"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," the network said in a statement Friday morning. "His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."
Bourdain was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series. His close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning.

Drug Addict. Heroin. But that was in his past...wink, wink.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 8, 2018 11:25 AM |
I immediately assumed drug overdose.
He committed suicide?! That shocks me.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 8, 2018 11:25 AM |
Not surprised. He seemed rather too full of himself.

I'll just say it:
I get that many have mental health issues but this doesn't pass the sniff test.
He either OD'd or someone KILLED him.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 8, 2018 11:26 AM |
Sounds like another doorknob-and-scarf deal.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 8, 2018 11:27 AM |
Wow, all these suicides
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 8, 2018 11:27 AM |
I always thought he had a screw lose, I could never get into his shows. Suspension confirmed.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 8, 2018 11:27 AM |
Oh holy fuck. Did he relapse? Bourdain was sober from heroin for many years. I just cannot believe this. Two high profile suicides in a week.
WTF is happening? Why???
People, depression is a SERIOUS illness. If you have it, please seek help. It can be alleviated. Sometimes it cannot, but please try everything possible before either relapsing into drugs and alcohol and/or taking your own life.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 8, 2018 11:28 AM |
A suicide? Really? What a pretentious asshole, in life and in death.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 8, 2018 11:28 AM |
His girlfriend also seems a bit mental. Was it suicide?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 8, 2018 11:29 AM |
10 to 1 he was still using drug, and ODed.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 8, 2018 11:29 AM |
I really am sad. He was amazing! I want to cry. He was my spirit animal!
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 8, 2018 11:30 AM |
Let that be a lesson to y'all.
You can get paid tons of money to travel the globe and eat for a living, and still be unhappy.

'Suicided' for disobeying the commands of his NWO masters....or for seeing/hearing something he shouldn't....or maybe planning to tell the truth about something on the air?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 8, 2018 11:30 AM |
Suicide when you are not dying of a real physical illness is a selfish act. Fuck your bitches, I mean my fans, I am out!
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 8, 2018 11:30 AM |
Sometimes you just want it all to stop. And that he did.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 8, 2018 11:30 AM |
If it was an accidental OD it wouldn't be getting reported as a suicide. Clearly his body was found in a state where he killed himself, either hanging, cut wrist, or something like that.

He was not just a casual drug user, in his own words from a book "seemingly endless use of drugs. Bourdain used everything—psychedelics, pharmaceuticals, amphetamines, cocaine, and heroin. Eventually, he did enter rehab."
Yeah, he hung himself, but thats one of many ways people off themself when they are high and depressed.

I never cared much for his show. For a professional chef and food critic he had an amazingly limited vocabulary when it came to describing food ("This is good, this is really good!"), but I loved the book he wrote about his early days in the restaurant business.

He almost certainly relapsed. I’ve known people who were sober and suicided, but it is quite rare.
Probably heroin. Fuck, what a waste. I didn’t love his show, but I was genuinely happy for him to have found success after all of his struggles with drugs and booze.
I would not be able to do something like that with a child. Never. No way could I leave a child behind.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | June 8, 2018 11:57 AM |
I never understood his popularity. Before CNN his show show was so boring and unenlightened. Always in some kind of slumy part of the world eating some gross shit people called food and raving about it's authenticity as he bloviated about life. Typical egotistical New Yorker, he always assumed everyone else was just as much an ass hat elitist like himself.

I loved his early shows, they were funny and informative and honest about the weirdness of travel, and "Kitchen Confidential" was an excellent and unique book. And he was hot when he was younger! But for the last few years he's lost the sharp sense if humor he had, I thought it was because he was older, but he probably had more serious demons.
Still, I'm having a very hard time believing that someone with a kid of eleven would do that. It's not always about you and your feeeeelings.

I have no sympathy for rich people who commit suicide. They have no clue how the rest of the world is struggling daily just to find their next meal. While you can still struggle with depression when you are rich, the reality is you don't have to worry about where your next meal comes from, if you can pay the rent, if they are going to turn off the power, how you can pay the bills for basic survival.
Bo ho, you're sad, your Asian snatch was cheating on you. Looks like the only answer is to get even with guilt and kill yourself.

R92, are you implying that the ex girlfriend is at fault? She wasn’t. Also, yes, she left him. Older men need to get a grip and realize that while a younger woman might find them interesting at first, younger women want younger men. No one wants to fuck someone who is old enough to be their father.
Did I date older men when I was younger? Yes. Was I truly, 100% really into it sexually? No. I don’t blame her. People want to be with people that are closer to their age. She dated him because he was interesting, and had cash. Sexually, she wanted someone who was her age. No matter what a young woman says about older men being great, sex is the one thing that is lacking, and it will be the one thing that leads to a breakup, or divorce.

Lately he's been some to real hellholes on the show (like One of the Congos, Beirut, Madagascar) that would make even the most optimistic idealist despair. For an (ex-)junkie, dumped by his girlfriend, and tired of seeing so much shit in the world, it's not a surprise that he would take his own life, or risk killing himself.

Stop projecting. He loved traveling to those places. He travled to France frequently as a child and loved it. His rebellion or attempt to prove he was not a spoiled child was to go to all the shit holes in the world. He loved shitty Asian food. About 80% of his show are about Asian food and eating live animals or toasty bugs.

The logic of some people here astounds me. Or should I say, lack of logic.
Bourdain was drinking, traveling, and somewhat isolated due to constant traveling. He is admittedly an ex junkie, and the chances of him having relapsed are pretty damn good. He killed himself. There may have been a note, which is why they are certain of his suicide.
JFC, not everyone who is wealthy is caught up in some imagined Clinton pedo-gate conspiracy, coinciding with Harvey Weinstein being taken down for being a rapist. Stop going for the most convoluted, ridiculous theories, and get a grip.

Anthony Bourdain was most assuredly creative. He was a novelist, memoirist, chef, and TV producer with a very ambitious crew working in sometimes very difficult conditions, offering an unusual take on unusual destinations.. No matter what you think of his output, he was a creator.

R236, stfu already. No one here gives a shit what you think, or about your categorization of who is deemed worthy of suicide, and who isn’t.
People don’t fucking kill themselves because they are living hand to mouth. Most homeless people who are living in the manner in which you describe, and have been doing so for long periods of time, either resolve their situation by getting into government assisted section 8 housing, or die from malnutrition, lack of medical intervention for diseases that they may be aware or not aware that they suffer from, or die from exposure to the elements, or a combination thereof. How exactly would a homeless person kill themselves? They live nowhere, so there is no privacy, no door knob to hang from, and no money to buy a gun and shoot themselves.
You’re more of a pompous asshole than those struggling with depression, and kill themselves. You must also be a poor Rethug, if you honestly believe that attaining a certain amount of money and success, is the answer to all of life’s problems.
Your bills are paid for when you have lots of money. You can get on a plane and go anywhere, and you can buy anything you want, and do, for about a year. Then it’s back to reality. Not much changes when you become upper middle class or wealthy. Everyday, you must still, wake up, take a shit, get dressed, and do something, even if that something is doing nothing.
Money helps a whole fucking lot, but it doesn’t make you happy, asshole.

I always thought of Bourdain as a writer more than a chef. His milieu was the world of food but he really wrote about life. A writer is a creative person and fuck you for saying otherwise. Listen to his narration on his shows as he ruminated about the joy and commonality food provides us. He was definitely a creative person.
We live in such a crass and ruthless society I know I shouldn't be shocked at people's lack of empathy or compassion over a celebrity who took his own life, but its still troublesome to see the comments here knowing that they are simply a microcosm of the way people in a Trump world think these days. Depression is a killer. Those saying that its a selfish act to leave your kid just because of you feel bad obviously have no conception of what depression can do to one's brain, where you live in a state in which you convince yourself that you are actually no good for your child; that they would be better off without you. It is a cruel and merciless force in your head and it is relentless.

See, a lot of us think Bourdain was crass and ruthless too, sarcastic and hostile and the typical white guy acting superior for eating "weird" things native peoples had been eating for centuries. He was pretentious and rude to other celebs, sometimes just out of petty jealousy (or that tiresome "I'M a real chef, unlike the awful people on television" attitude of his) and it was grating.
I get that you're a fan but your lengthy moral scolding at DLers is unwarranted. DL isn't going to pull punches just to spare your feelings.

There are 100% romantic pics of Asia and this Hugo guy walking around holding hands. Over the last few weeks. I’m guessing this was a tipping point. And perhaps he relapsed.
Question: do the suicide hotline phone numbers being shared help people? What happens when you call? Besides being talked down. Hopefully you’re set up with a therapist or emergency medical treatment?

The sad truth is that no amount of luck, wealth, or happiness can make a depressed person save him from his depressed point of view. That will always be around and taint everything he experiences. That and the need of others telling you that you are indeed worthy of other people's respect and admiration fuels people to look for outside approval and ignore the actual approval that really matters: Your own. And in the end it's "OMG, what have I done and for what?" and the shame, the guilt, and the anger of your own actions push you over the edge.

I have a morbid question. If you discover a person who’s hung/hanged themselves and you know they’re dead, should you cut them down or release the noose? It seems like the natural reaction and the thing most of us would do. But would that be tampering with evidence? Like, maybe it was a murder made to look like a suicide (especially those doorknob hangings). But then would it look suspicious if you just left them there and called 911?

From Page Six:
Authorities in France said Bourdain killed himself at the Le Chambard hotel in Kaysersberg-Vignoble, near the border of Germany.
“We learned this morning about the death by hanging of an American chef at a luxury hotel of Kaysersberg, Le Chambard,” a prosecutor in Kaysersberg-Vignoble told French newspaper Dernière Nouvelle D’alsace. “At this point nothing suggests the intervention of a third party.”

He was more good than bad. though clearly conflicted.

Evan Benn, Miami Herald editor:
In 2010, I covered a @Bourdain book-tour stop at #stl’s @TheFoxTheatre where a boy with leukemia asked his culinary idol where he should go eat - anywhere in the world - once he’s in remission. Bourdain didn’t hesitate: Spain. But then after @Bourdain left town and our story about the tour appearance ran, his assistant reached out to me, privately. Bourdain wanted to help send this kid to Spain and make it the time of his life
So, with the help of @MakeAWish, Evan Piña-White went to Spain. We wrote about that - but the story doesn’t mention Bourdain’s involvement (per his wishes). He set the kid up at the best restaurants & helped make the trip incredible. He was special.

She, her family, friends, have pretty much had to move heaven and earth to save her life- not just seeking help in mental health institutions, but quitting her job, counselling every wweek, developing an " emergency plan of action" that is like a phone tree of szzzorts for when my friend is in crisis. I wonder if these celebrity types look at these types of life-saving interventions for their mental health and see the demise of their careers. Just a thought.

[quote] The fragile songbird from France, which weighs less than an ounce and is about the size of your thumb, was served exclusively to royalty and rich gourmands until it became illegal in 1999. The procedure for preparing ortolan has long been controversial. They are kept in darkness for weeks or are blinded, which causes the bird to gorge on grains and grapes and become fat, the key ingredient to its decadence when cooked. The birds are then thrown alive into a vat of Armagnac brandy (which both drowns and marinades them), then roasted. Ortolans are meant to be eaten feet-first and whole, except for the beak, according to the Times.
[quote] And author and TV personality Anthony Bourdain describes his own ortolan experience in his 2010 book "Medium Raw." The bird, smuggled into New York, was served at a private dinner.
[quote] "I bring my molars down and through my bird's rib cage with a wet crunch and am rewarded with a scalding hot rush of burning fat and guts down my throat. Rarely have pain and delight combined so well. I'm giddily uncomfortable, breathing in short, controlled gasps as I continue slowly – ever so slowly – to chew. With every bite, as the thin bones and layers of fat, meat, skin, and organs compact in on themselves, there are sublime dribbles of varied and wondrous ancient flavors: figs, Armagnac, dark flesh slightly infused with the salty taste of my own blood as my mouth is pricked by the sharp bones. As I swallow, I draw in the head and beak, which, until now, have been hanging from my lips, and blithely crush the skull."

I did notice that he looked gaunt and much older lately on his CNN travel show and that he drank A LOT on the shows. He had demons that finally caught up with him. I feel badly for his daughter. He had wanted a child for a long time and doted on her. RIP Badass Bourdain.

They called it suicide because it couldn't be called anything else.

Four months before he killed himself in a hotel room in France, Anthony Bourdain eerily spoke about death — but also said he was “happy in ways I didn’t think I ever would be.”
“I’m going to pretty much die in the saddle,” he told People magazine in February while filming his show “Parts Unknown.”
The 61-year-old chef and TV show host said he spends about 250 days a year on the road — but wasn’t planning on retiring from his globe-trotting life any time soon.
“I gave up on that. I’ve tried. I just think I’m just too nervous, neurotic, driven,” he said. “I would have had a different answer a few years ago. I might have deluded myself into thinking that I’d be happy in a hammock or gardening. But no, I’m quite sure I can’t.”
Despite his busy schedule, Bourdain made sure to carve out five days a month to spend time with his 11-year-old daughter Ariane, who lives with his ex-wife Ottavia Busia in Manhattan.
“I’ll go back, see my daughter, unpack, repack, mimic a normal life, which is extraordinarily pleasurable to me,” he said.
Bourdain said the birth of his only child made him feel like he had “some responsibility” to “at least try to live.”
“I also do feel I have things to live for,” he said. “There have been times, honestly, in my life that I figured, ‘I’ve had a good run — why not just do this stupid thing, this selfish thing … jump off a cliff into water of indeterminate depth,'” he said, recalling something he’d once done for his show “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.”
Before his daughter was born, Bourdain said he’d often push his boundaries.
“I was, frankly, asking for trouble. It was a daredevil move,” he said. “In retrospect, I don’t know that I would do that today, now that I’m a dad or reasonably happy.”
He described himself to People as being “happy in ways that I have not been in memory” and “happy in ways I didn’t think I ever would be, for sure.”
He credited girlfriend Asia Argento with his contentment.
The pair met in 2016, when the Italian actress appeared on season eight of “Parts Unknown.”
Bourdain also admitted he was once addicted to heroin and cocaine and was drinking too much in his final years working in the restaurant industry, but he said he wasn’t a daily drinker.
“It’s never been an addiction for me,” he said about alcohol. “I’ve abused alcohol, for sure, but I’ve never felt a compulsion to … cigarettes, obviously, that’s an addiction.”
by Anonymous | reply 447 | June 8, 2018 4:50 PM |
Christine Teigen retweeted a song Bourdain shared just days ago and wrote she was playing it for him this morning. The song was from a recent episode of "Parts Unknown."

I want to option the story for a movie. Women are going to cream their pants over the story of an edgy, grungy man-of-the-world who kills himself for a crazy Italian chick.

He wasn't a great chef and didn't pretend to be one. Other, greater, chefs adored him. Eric Ripert, Marco Pierre White, Heston Blumenthal, etc., they were all good friends with Bourdain. "Kitchen Confidential" was a fantastic, ground-breaking book. It's a must read and not many writers can say that.
Bourdain came out swinging hard against Harvey Weinstein when Argento spoke up against him. He didn't hesitate to publicly take him on and trash him. Whatever else he was, Bourdain was no coward.
I don't believe it was auto-asphyxiation. Junkies have a reason they are shooting heroin into their veins that goes beyond addiction. The addiction is the visible symptom. They don't shoot dope every day because they love living in this world. Bourdain had old demons, deeply rooted, and he finally gave in to them. Argento dumping him may have been the trigger for his suicide but it wasn't the cause.

Back in the late 70s there was a rash of teen “suicide pacts” in my area. All of them involved CO poisoning in cars. Police kept pleading with news media to stop covering the deaths. Finally, the local newspapers agreed and the suicide pacts stopped. Suicide can be “contagious.”

Last year, Mr Bourdin said he had blacked out in a restaurant in France and said he would happily return to abusing heroin if he ever had 'a bad chest X-ray'.
The macabre admission was made by the recovering American drug addict to the New Yorker magazine.
The New Yorker interview describes how Mr Bourdin had improved his health after relying on heroin for many years, but collapsed in France soon after making an episode of 'Parts Unknown' in Vietnam.
He was in the southwest seaside resort of Arachon in around 2014 or 2015, and had taken a 'battery of battery of painkillers and anti-inflammatories'.
The article by Patrick Radden Keefe reads: 'After impulsively swallowing a week’s supply, Bourdain realized that he had not eaten in thirty-six hours.
'He drove to a café in a nearby town, Arcachon, and ordered spaghetti and a bottle of Chianti. He was halfway through the wine when he realized that he was sweating through his clothes. Then he blacked out.'
Mr Bourdain survived the incident, but the article recalls how his father, music producer father Pierre Bourdain, died of a stroke in 1987, aged just 57.
The article reads: 'Bourdain often thinks about dying; more than once, he told me that, if he got “a bad chest X-ray,” he would happily renew his acquaintance with heroin.
'Taking meds and booze on an empty stomach was just a foolish mistake, but it left him shaken.'

Bourdain was born in New York City in 1956, and was raised in New Jersey by French music executive Pierre Bourdain and his wife Gladys, a staff editor at the New York Times. He credited summers spent in France as a child with his obsession with food.
Bourdian attended Vassar College but dropped out after two years. He started working in restaurants on Cape Cod, and decided to hone his craft further by studying at the Culinary Institute of America.
After graduating from the Institute in 1978, Bourdain moved to New York City and worked in some of Manhattan's most famous restaurants such as the Supper Club, One Fifth Avenue and Sullivan's - before becoming the executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles.
It was during his grueling days as a chef that Bourdain got into drugs, mostly cocaine and heroin. In a 2013 interview with the Guardian, he said he got into using cocaine and heroin because of the normalcy of his suburban upbringing.
'I deeply resented the relative stability at my house. I started taking drugs as soon as I encountered them,' Bourdain said.

Former neighbor Ted Scofield told DailyMail.com on Friday that Bourdain was a 'super nice guy and very encouraging'.
'I wouldn't say we were friends, but I knew him well enough to call him Tony. One Sunday a few years back I ran into him on a Sunday morning dropping off a bag of baby clothes that needed to be laundered at a place across the street from our building.
'When I remarked that a big TV star like him shouldn't have to do that, he reminded me that he worked for a cable station. Then, a while after that I saw him again, this time under different circumstances. He pulled up to our building in a shiny new BMW. With a wink and a smile, he said "new contract baby!"' he recalled.
Doorman Jose Hernandez, said that 'Mr. B, as we called him, was a nice, sweet man. He came out every morning and me and the other doormen would ask him questions about his travels. He always took the time to answer and smiled while doing so.'
Jose added: 'But he never talked much about his family. He was private in that regard.'

While Bourdain's TV career seemed to be better than ever, he had suffered one business failure recently.
For the past two years, the chef had been working on 'Bourdain Market' - a Singapore-style food hall planned for New York City's Pier 57 development.
But in December, he told Eater that the market had been cancelled.
'Launching what is admittedly a very ambitious venture has proven to be challenging at every turn,' he said. 'It seems increasingly clear that in spite of my best efforts, the stars may not align at Pier 57 which is an especially complicated site for which we still do not have a lease.'
Bourdain's death comes three days after American designer Kate Spade, who built a fashion empire on her signature handbags, was found dead in her New York apartment of suicide on Tuesday. She also hanged herself.
Suicide rates rose in nearly every U.S. state from 1999 to 2016, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday. Nearly 45,000 people committed suicide in 2016, making it one of three leading causes of death in the United States, along with Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses.

Excerpt from Sohpia Loren's letters reveal the Hollywood star’s passionate pursuit of her while filming in Spain:
Speaking two years ago, Loren explained that she had been in search of a father figure, but it had to be the right man: “You know, I had to make a choice, Carlo was Italian; he belonged to my world. I know it was the right thing to do, for me. “At the time I didn’t have any regrets, I was in love with my husband. I was very affectionate with Cary, but I was 23 years old. I couldn’t make up my mind to marry a giant from another country and leave Carlo. I didn’t feel like making the big step.”

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the ONLY reason that I would take my own life, is if I was told I had aggressive Alzheimer’s. If a neurologist performed a scan, and said that I’d be completely out of it within a few years, then I would either move to a state where I can participate in legal, assisted suicide, or I’d do the doorknob thing.
I’d probably discuss it with close friends and family beforehand, and it would be clear to those closest to me why I chose to do so.
Perhaps he was given a highly unfavorable medical diagnosis about his health. We really don’t know why he did this. I am assuming depression, however, that may not be the case.
Personally, I wouldn’t want to stick around if I thought I’d not know how to wipe my own ass, or know my own name. There are other illnesses that will also take you completely out of commission, such as MS, and Parkinson’s.
Bourdain was fiercely independent. People like that cannot imagine life without the ability to travel, or to do the things that they enjoy, and I completely understand that.

I love how the media keeps blaming the public for not being in touch with suicide when if fact it was they who have the problem. They knew he was a long term drug addict. They knew he had a drinking problem. They knew he was unstable. They knew he was fixated on death. Yet they hired him anyway with no oversight and hid all that from the public. There is no reason they couldn't have required him as part of his deal to meet with a counselor or psychiatrist on a weekly basis or the contract gets voided. Studios do morality clauses all the time, they just didn't bother, its not that different.

Hetero male writers often suffer from the Hemingway curse, always trying to prove their masculinity by doing heinous shit like animal abuse. I don't condone Bourdain's cruelty but it's so common among all these guys who mistakenly think that shit makes them manly and edgy. Bourdain got in from both the chef world and the literary world. Both professions harbor a lot of false machismo because the straight men in those professions constantly feel the need to prove they're manly. It's sad and pitiful. Hemingway ended up dead too, much good the bullfighting and gun worship did him.
