Did Ted Kennedy fear he'd be assassinated, too?

After Bobby was killed 50 years ago today, how did Ted get through life without fearing he'd be next? I'd be paranoid about security and protection always. There was a story about a ceremonial military function where there was a rifle salute and Ted collapsing in abject fear when he heard the shots. The PTSD must have been terrible.

The first two assassinations were by two different shooters, and they had been apprehended. Statistically, what were the odds of that happening three times to one family?

Now if it was one group responsible, and they were still at large, then he would have needed to leave the country (as Jackie O did with her son).

No, Rose. The thought never crossed his mind.

What were the odds of it happening twice? Yet it happened.

Looking back, Mrs. Onassis made a brave decision to leave America. I know- people bring up the millions, the luxury, but I think her impulse was to protect her children. Remember, she was in a unique situation, and I think she responded intelligently. And selflessly, in that it wrecked her reputation for quite a few years.

r4 Jackie married a pig like Onassis just to protect her children? Surely you can't be serious.

by Anonymousreply 5June 5, 2018 3:21 PM

"Mrs. Onassis"? Mary!

by Anonymousreply 6June 5, 2018 3:42 PM

I saw Ted Kennedy twice and both times he looked both ways and ran to his waiting car. Yes, I think he feared assassination.

by Anonymousreply 7June 5, 2018 3:59 PM

He always had one eye on the Kopechnes.

by Anonymousreply 8June 5, 2018 4:02 PM

Why do you think he drank so much, OP?

by Anonymousreply 9June 5, 2018 5:07 PM

I'm sure it was always in the back of his mind somewhere. There is no escaping the Kennedy assassinations and what they have meant since in this country (and I include the many conspiracy theories surrounding both). Unless they now have dementia or something or were too young too remember, virtually no one alive now in this country who was also alive then does not remember where they were or what they were doing when they heard at least about John Kennedy's assassination--for many of these people now, since most are 60 or over, the memories are mostly of being in school at the time as are mine.

Imagine how the family must have reacted to the punk band Dead Kennedys.

That's like saying that lightening won't strike the Empire State Building because it already struck once. Being struck by lightening is rare, but there are characteristics that make some targets more likely than others.

All of his brothers died violently, he was the only one to die of natural causes. His mother wanted him to become a Catholic priest.

by Anonymousreply 13June 5, 2018 7:16 PM

I think this country would have been on a very different path now if Bobby had won the way he would have.had he lived.

by Anonymousreply 14June 5, 2018 7:22 PM

The Kennedy and MLK assassinations were acts of domestic terrorism that continue today. These same terrorists surround us today still as they did in the 1960s.

by Anonymousreply 15June 5, 2018 10:27 PM

I think the loss of Bobby was even greater than the loss of John. Bobby would have done great things for this country. He truly cared about the poor. He would have taken the great programs LBJ began to heights that would have wiped out poverty in America. He would have done the same with civil rights. He also would have ended Viet Nam years and 10s of thousands of lives before it ended, which is probably why he was assassinated.

Sorry, I put this in the wrong Kennedy thread.

by Anonymousreply 17June 6, 2018 12:18 AM

does anyone remember the speech RFK gave the night MLK was killed? It's very heart-felt and sincere. A good man.

by Anonymousreply 18June 6, 2018 3:41 PM

Ted Kennedy had almost died in a plane crash in 1964 and was in pain from it the rest of his life.

by Anonymousreply 19June 6, 2018 4:27 PM

To r19: GOOD.

by Anonymousreply 20June 6, 2018 4:35 PM

Never. No one feared the alchie just tolerated him. Truth

by Anonymousreply 21June 6, 2018 5:10 PM

What do you think Chappaquiddick was about?

And extemporaneous, too. Couldn’t have prepped for something like that.

If you look at old tapes of his eulogizing Bobby, at the end his voice cracked. It was heart breaking. I worked on the Hill a the time. He became reclusive ( he used to wave at tourists when walking between the Senate bldg. and the Capitol)...after the assassination, he always walked with his head down, started to gain weight and at times looked disheveled. I truly believe that Jackie suffered from a type of PTSD, we didn't know about it back then, but who wouldn't have...Her leaving the US in my mind was understandable.

by Anonymousreply 24June 6, 2018 7:22 PM

Ted Kennedy is in hell now šŸ˜„

by Anonymousreply 25June 6, 2018 7:25 PM

Ted was too drunk to care most of the time...especially when he was boinking waitresses under the table in private rooms at restaurants.

by Anonymousreply 26June 6, 2018 7:30 PM

I ALWAYS THOUGHT HE WAS THE CUTEST.
