'Solo' Will Lose $50M-Plus in First Defeat for Disney's 'Star Wars' Empire

SJW Wars can't die soon enough. Good riddance to Disney's crappy cash grab movies.

Blocked for using the term, SJW. Fuck off to 4chan, YouTube or Reddit with your #whitegenocide bullshit. Plenty of assholes like you to beat your chests about how you've all been diminished as white males because you have to see at least one minority, LGB or female face onscreen in a movie.

by Anonymousreply 1June 4, 2018 11:13 PM

Breitbart this place not is.

by Anonymousreply 2June 4, 2018 11:14 PM

Shit happens.

by Anonymousreply 3June 4, 2018 11:15 PM

I actually thought Solo was better than either The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi. Actually, both stand-alone movies were better.

by Anonymousreply 4June 4, 2018 11:15 PM

They're blaming the male lead for this. I don't know who the main guy is and after this I doubt anyone else will.

by Anonymousreply 5June 4, 2018 11:16 PM

I saw it this weekend and I thought it was pretty good. But I imagine this failure has to do with saturation in the market.

by Anonymousreply 6June 4, 2018 11:16 PM

Blocked in turn for blocking someone for using the term SJW.

by Anonymousreply 8June 4, 2018 11:19 PM

I'd watch solo 100 times before I spent a minute with you deplorable trash. You aren't wanted here. Go back to 4chan

by Anonymousreply 9June 4, 2018 11:20 PM

Lucasfilm needs to start listening to fans and stop being the equivalent of the evil Emperor trying to force movie goers to accept its will. Maybe now they will start doing focus groups at various stages of production to try understand what fans want to see.

by Anonymousreply 10June 4, 2018 11:26 PM

It seems so bizarre to be that the alt-right contingent has latched themselves onto "Solo" underperforming. Market saturation? Uninspired trailer? Troubled production?

No, it is because The Last Jedi didn't glorify white guys enough, so people boycotted this movie starring a white guy.

by Anonymousreply 11June 4, 2018 11:27 PM

It’s a flop in China. No one over there knows or cares who Han Solo is. In 2018, your movie ain’t a hit unless it’s a hit in China.

Maybe they should make Star Wars a TV show.

by Anonymousreply 12June 4, 2018 11:30 PM

Right winger snowflakes are getting upset for being called out. I was just writing a reply and realized I'd rather talk in a thread that wasn't started by a right winger who's probably a homophobe as well.

BTW, isn't it delicious these cunts don't seem to realize the jedis would be fighting them in the Star Wars universe. The good guys did not like the fascists there at all.

by Anonymousreply 13June 4, 2018 11:31 PM

No one likes right wing cunts. It's why they try so hard to take over every anonymous space. They can't find people in real life who can tolerate them

by Anonymousreply 14June 4, 2018 11:32 PM

R13, fascism always comes from the left, not the right. Hitler was a man of the left, as was Mussolini.

Here, go read this book. Learn some actual history before you shoot your mouth off about fascism.

R16, your response doesn't surprise me. You ignore real history and fall back on name-calling. An accurate and appropriate demonstration of your intellect.

by Anonymousreply 17June 5, 2018 12:00 AM

Yes, of course, that's why the Blackshirts were used as strikebreakers and the Nazis blamed the burning the Reichstag on communists and socialists fought Franco's fascist overthrow of the Spanish republic, because fascists were really left wing.

Anyway, Nazis aside, it would be nice if Disney reassessed the policy of releasing one new Star Wars film per year, but it seems they will blame Solo's under-performance on the lead actor, not on audience fatigue.

by Anonymousreply 18June 5, 2018 12:16 AM

It's that actor. He's not cute at all. Look at him in the thumbnail. Gross.

by Anonymousreply 19June 5, 2018 12:20 AM

He's meh to look at but he excelled at the role. I was shocked at how much like Harrison Ford he sounded. Not even just the voice but the mannerisms

by Anonymousreply 20June 5, 2018 12:24 AM

Hitler belonged to a party called National Socialism. He did not create the party, he did not name the party.

In prison for his failed coup, he learned about fascist Mussolinis take over in Italy.

So, Hitler wrote a nifty book called my struggle. In it he told all of us his political ideology.

In short, a right wing political ideology of coporate takeover of the state with ethic purity as a core belief.

D'Souza is a Holocaust denier and a convicted felon, not to mention a white supremacist and a Russian propaganda hack.

Those old people at your high school who tell you to read real books, they are right, R15

Kee-rist. Show me a bigger "SJW" than Princess Leia in the original trilogy. And I loved her for it.

And Solo is a fun romp with some unexpected moments and its fair share of effective humor, action, performances and visuals.

It's hardly surprising that Solo bombed at the box office. The movie had to be mostly reshot because it was so bad, the lead character is very unattractive and uninspiring, and frankly, no-one really ever cared what Solo's backstory was. A total misfire on all counts.

This always looked solely like a money making venture for Disney. They won't have any problem absorbing the financial loss and hopefully they will be more careful with the Star Wars franchise from now on.

by Anonymousreply 31June 5, 2018 6:16 AM

2 things not in its favor

having ron howard direct

having the goomba of the day, la glover, in it...

by Anonymousreply 32June 5, 2018 6:46 AM

I’m an eldergay - and went with school friends to see the original Star Wars movie when it came out in 1977. Was blown away. Saw it 11 times in the year or so it ran.

Didn’t like empire as much - just seemed like a chase film that went nowhere - so only four or five views. And two for Jedi.

Saw the first one of the new sequence just once - thought it looked great but was kinda lame. Gave the next one a go - then gave up.

But this Han Solo story was one I thought I’d actually like to see. And I’ll probably go along this weekend.

Had two Star Wars fanboys I know go on about it to me. One is kinda gentle and probably a closeted Gay guy. He liked it a lot and the stuff he said about it kind of rang true based on the clips and the trailer.

The other guy is supposedly straight (who knows?) and is a bit of a Christian - and I think he’s quite conservative politically. He went on and on about how much he hated it and hated Disney’s agenda in pushing different sexualities at the audience (Lando is pansexual I gather and there is NOTHING in the originals to suggest this! - he kept pointing out) - so yeah - all the things he hates are things I think sound kinda cool and make me more inclined to want to see it.

Is this gonna be a problem for these franchises though? Are the more liberal and easy-going Hollywood production teams pushing stuff onto viewers in the conservative heartland that they really don’t want to see? Could this kind of backlash be one of the reasons it hasn’t done so well? Or is it just this one movie hadn’t really caught on with the public for whatever reason?

by Anonymousreply 33June 5, 2018 11:13 AM

That's another franchise ruined by Alden.... dude's bigger box office poison than Taylor Kitsch

by Anonymousreply 34June 5, 2018 11:29 AM

Why the fuck was this movie released in May?

The new Star Wars movies have all been released just before Xmas, which is when I expected this one to come out, too!

Is there another Star Wars film coming out this December?

by Anonymousreply 35June 5, 2018 11:34 AM

The next one is scheduled for late 2019.

by Anonymousreply 36June 5, 2018 11:55 AM

Oh gosh. There's more?!!! When will it be enough?

by Anonymousreply 37June 5, 2018 12:06 PM

^Unbelievable, isn't it? Anything for money.

by Anonymousreply 38June 5, 2018 1:49 PM

Idiots latching on to the word “socialist’ in the Nazi party’s name as being significant enough to change reality are like those who argue Republicans today can’t be racist because Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. They imagine they are being devastatingly clever, but they only show how manipulated and ignorant they are.

by Anonymousreply 39June 5, 2018 2:08 PM
Can we please get these Nazi fucks off DL. More red tagging Muriel.

This. A million times.

by Anonymousreply 40June 5, 2018 2:10 PM

I haven't seen it yet. Of the new movies, the only one I liked was Rogue One.

The Force Awakens was basically a remake of A New Hope, and the third time they've used the Death Star. I also don't find the Kylo Ren character appealing, and the First Order is basically the Empire. There was also no explanation of who Snoke is, or where he came from, or where the First Order came from, etc. Plus they killed Han Solo.

The Last Jedi was even worse. The casino planet interlude, the complete mess they made of Luke's character, his death, and the usage of light speed as a weapon. On top of that, none of the new characters are appealing in the same way the old characters were, and the whol series, presumably a trilogy, feels completely directionless and written on the fly.

It really is shocking how badly Disney have fucked the franchise up - even worse than George Lucas did with the prequels, and that's really saying something. When it was just the original trilogy, you had one film that was good, another that was amazing, and one that was meh. Now we still only have one amazing and one good, every other movie in the main storyline is either risible or bad - that's seven out of nine.

It doesn't bode well for the future.

by Anonymousreply 41June 5, 2018 2:53 PM

^^ I meant seven out of eight.

[bold]Exclusive: Future ‘A Star Wars Story’ Spinoffs on Hold at Lucasfilm[/bold]
It may be a while before we see any more movies like Solo: A Star Wars Story out of Lucasfilm. Sources with knowledge of the situation tell Collider that Lucasfilm has decided to put plans for more A Star Wars Story spinoff movies on hold, instead opting to focus their attention on Star Wars: Episode IX and what the next trilogy of Star Wars films will be after that film.
Sources tell us that the previously rumored Obi-Wan movie was in active development, but those who were working on the film are no longer involved. It was recently reported that Logan filmmaker James Mangold was in early talks to write and direct the Boba Fett film, but that was before Solo’s release.

More insider info:
In light of the director change and having to nearly reshoot the entire movie, Lucasfilm wanted to move Solo: A Star Wars Story to December 2018, but Disney had enough of their previous films’ delays and put their foot down. Our source tells us that Disney granted Lucasfilm the budget and time to make all the production changes they needed to fix anything broken with Solo, but that they had to make the May 25th release date.
In addition to this, Disney told Lucasfilm that they would not let Solo interfere with their plans for Avengers: Infinity War, meaning Solo would not get any preferential treatment in marketing to make up for lost time due to its reshoots that lasted into the Fall of 2017. Disney is in new territory, having bought up so many different companies and franchises they are now quite literally competing with themselves to an extent.
Lucasfilm is returning focus to one project at a time per-medium. So right now the only projects in development are Episode IX (live action film), Star Wars: Resistance (animated series), and Jon Favreau’s live-action TV series. It sounds like they will continue to develop a solid structuring among those three departments under the Lucasfilm banner, with Dave Filoni still heading the animation department.
[bold]Disney is done experimenting with new or unusual filmmakers and will go back to proven veteran talent who they know can handle a big budget Star Wars production in an effort to prevent future production chaos, drama, and firings.[/bold]
A second source of ours worked for a company contracted by Disney for the standalone films, and recently revealed that his company was informed their contract would not be extended beyond Solo, further confirming the reports of future standalone film project cancellations.

You do realize this will still make a ton of money in the long run with streaming and all kinds of DVD formats. Lucasfilm denies yesterday's rumours and doubles down on the spinoffs.
Lucasfilm sources on Thursday characterized as "inaccurate" a report that future "Star Wars" movies falling outside of the regular trilogy storyline (Episodes I to IX) have been put on hold in the wake of the box office under-performance of "Solo: A Star Wars Story."
Instead, Lucasfilm told ABC News there are still "multiple" Star Wars films currently in development that have not been officially announced. Those projects are moving forward separate from an already-announced "Star Wars" trilogy being overseen by "The Last Jedi" director Rian Johnson and another series of movies from "Game of Thrones" producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

More insider info.
It sounds like this particular rumor permeated because studio space at Pinewood Studios that was reserved for upcoming Star Wars films was recently relinquished. When that happened, it appears people in the some circles at Pinewood also assumed it meant doom and gloom for the Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett films. Well, after speaking to a few more Pinewood sources, it sounds like there was going to be a movie or a premise along the lines of Mos Eisley Spaceport: A Star Wars Story (not an official title). Crew members of the previous Star Wars film said they believed the other movie was about the spaceport Luke Skywalker goes into the original film. In other words, my sources are saying this movie we never even heard about was canned or postponed and it does not mean the Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett films are doomed.
To make it extra clear, it sounds like studio space was canceled, people panicked, assumed it meant bad things for the Kenobi and Fett films but it was actually a movie fans never heard of based around Mos Eisley Spaceport that was either canceled or postponed for now. There are sources at Pinewood who thought they were going to be working on a film of exactly that premise and said film was not Kenobi or Boba Fett.

A Mos Eisley movie? Well, now I've heard everything.

Grace has a rare exclusive. Says a source told her Iger is trying to push Kathy out but no one wants the job. JJ Abrams is one of those who turned it down. All stand-alone movies but the Obi-Wan film have been put on hold. Kennedy has given complete creative control to Abrams when it comes to Episode 9.

It's also going to be less "SJW" going forward so say goodbye to strong women, other ethnicities, and no gays ever. All because the older fans see these movies more times and buy more merchandise. Sigh.

Maybe they should just stop letting their marketing department determine these things. It hasn't worked so far.

by Anonymousreply 67June 26, 2018 8:30 PM

You know the worst part about blaming (or not blaming) so-called SJW outrage for the quality or performance of these movies - it actually let's a lot of people off the hook for bad stories and poor planning.

The whole idea that Johnson "subverts expectations" fails to consider that the three movies combined should reflect a character arc and progression for each of the key characters (not to mention Luke, Leia and Han). By upending the foundations laid in TFA, Johnson essentially "subverts" away all story development, let alone character development, established in the previous movie.

Not to mention that if you could use hyperspace they way they did, it basically invalidates all previous movies - why wouldn't you just launch a bunch of ships into hyperspace at the Death Star or Starkiller Base. Why bother with any other plan? As if autopilot doesn't exist?
