It would be a hard job, but trucking would also seem to have some benefits. You work on your own, see lots of the country. Hooking up at rest stops. Those truck stops with phones at the table for ordering.
Trucker life, trucker love

Hooking up at rest stops. LOL LOL LOL, oh my sides!!! That's a fantasy.

Knew someone who drove a truck for a while. It's a hard life. If the truck breakdown, it could mean a couple of weeks' profit.

Some truck stops have showers and beds. There must be action there.

Tons of action! Stopped to get gas in nowhere Nebraska at a Love's truck stop. There were more than a few truckers looking for release. Group showers are a thing and the employees don't bat an eye.

No. No, it’s not.

So where is this industry headed, with the advent of AI, and self driving trucks?
We will ALWAYS have to ship goods from access ports, to other parts of the country, but will we need actual truck drivers for this, in the next 20 years?

Worked for one - not as a driver. Very low wages and any problems - traffic, breakdowns - are basically out of your pocket since you only get paid per mile driven. Better off doing low wage work and staying at home.

OP, most trucking jobs will have disappeared in the next 10 years.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 3, 2018 4:45 PM |
OP can you drive a stickshift? Getting a truck license is not for nelly queens.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 3, 2018 4:50 PM |
OP has jerked off one too many times to "Kansas City Trucking Co."

[quote]Very low wages
[quote]The median annual wage for a trucker that works for a private fleet, such as a truck driver employed by Walmart, is $73,000, according to ATA.

I think it would be cool. You'd be out on the open roads, drive around in a convoy and get to use those radios and have nicknames like Big Red or something.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 3, 2018 5:28 PM |
Just make sure you know how to back up to those big doors they have.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 3, 2018 5:29 PM |
Constantly being on the road is a tough life, as anyone who has had to drive long car trips should know.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 3, 2018 5:42 PM |
You've never been to a truck stop, have you OP?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 3, 2018 6:36 PM |
$73,000 is not very low at all, especially for someone who lives in flyover land. Doesn't seem like a bad life at all. See the country from a high-up seat. Listen to your music. If you get lonely, stop at a restaurant and chat with the other patrons.
The hooking up is a thing, too. With other truckers...and with locals who hang out at the truck stops.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 3, 2018 7:36 PM |
The $73,000 figure is for truck drivers who work for private fleet. The median average salary for all truck drivers is $40,000. Em
As far as fun at truck stops keep in mind drivers don't have a lot of free time while on the road. Employer expectations are high for the mileage that will be covered in day. Also they are an aging work force.

Also, have you ever looked at most truck drivers? Not exactly Chippendale material.

There was a trucker in my neighbourhood who was a Hells Angel. These Hells Angels used to call themselves the Lords of Death.
I used to call them the Ladies of the night. Not to their faces of course.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 4, 2018 5:28 PM |
Like you ever saw their faces.
