Andiamo! Pack Your Bags Migrants. Free Ride Is Over. You KNOW Italians Mean Business

Every Euro country that was invaded by "migrants" deports them according to EU rules, a long, tedious and often futile process, due to "migrants" successfully suing to remain in the country. Many "migrants" in Italy don't want to be there, see it as a first stop in their progression to countries with far more generous welfare benefits.

by Anonymousreply 1June 3, 2018 4:02 AM

Good riddance. When I visited Italy, I saw a lot of these migrants lounging around, doing nothing. At least volunteer to clean the city you are feeeloading from and help out. Worse, they would try to scam tourists by forcing these bracelets onto their arm and berating them to pay.

by Anonymousreply 2June 3, 2018 4:07 AM

Those were gypsies R2 , different problem. My guess I, be shocked if more than 5,000 were deported by this time next year. It is a difficult: expensive process. Also op you sound like a real miserable cunt.

by Anonymousreply 3June 3, 2018 4:11 AM

Italy has a net negative population without immigrants. Good luck to the seniors on their job training for the janitor jobs they will compete for.

by Anonymousreply 4June 3, 2018 4:12 AM

The Italian voters have clearly decided that they do not want the "help" of migrants.

by Anonymousreply 5June 3, 2018 4:15 AM

I'm going with the Predictions 2018 thread that mentions Italy will be headline news all summer wrong. Makes sense.

2 years ago I remember seeing some Syrian women at a border patrol demanding in the most commanding way: "I want to go to Austria and I want to go NOW!"

Who the fuck do these people think they are?

by Anonymousreply 8June 3, 2018 4:27 AM

Someone has to get a grip with the uncontrolled mass migration. It is unsustainable and puts societal cohesion at risk.

by Anonymousreply 11June 3, 2018 4:46 AM

The Italians could have the Mafia put a horse's head on the bed of some of the migrants, although the migrants would probably just eat it. Sad(!).

by Anonymousreply 12June 3, 2018 4:48 AM

I'd take R10's article with a large boulder of salt. The Italian police aren't paid much and therefore don't work much, turning a blind eye to Roma thieving and migrant peddling and aggressive panhandling.

by Anonymousreply 13June 3, 2018 4:49 AM

They should ship them right up to Germany, and let Merkel deal with the problem she created.

by Anonymousreply 14June 3, 2018 4:50 AM

Trump is a Nazi. If you think Nazis are right about race, you might be a part of the problem.

by Anonymousreply 15June 3, 2018 4:51 AM

Hillary spouted off repeatedly during the campaign about how the US "needed" to admit a large number of Muslim immigrants.

I suspect it contributed to a significant number of swing voters going for Trump.

by Anonymousreply 16June 3, 2018 4:57 AM

There really are only two choices: we either stop invading, bombing, or otherwise exploiting these countries, and allow them to rebuild. Or, we continue to destroy them, and have to take in all the people we displace. There are literally zero other options.

by Anonymousreply 17June 3, 2018 5:00 AM

R17 "Migrants" are escaping overcrowded, failed societies for an easier life in functioning, flourishing societies. The invasion will continue as long as Euro countries abide by EU rules.

by Anonymousreply 18June 3, 2018 5:10 AM

Italy doesn't even need a wall. It has a sea between them and the invaders. If they "rescue" anyone on the water, the Italians should take them south instead of toward home.

by Anonymousreply 19June 3, 2018 5:11 AM

I recall 10 or so years ago some gypsy girls were doing the gypsy thing at some public beach in Italy — begging and hawking trinkets. Then several of them went in to swim and they got caught in an undercurrent and drowned.

They laid the girls’ bodies out on the beach with towels over them and there are pictures of the Italians on the beach carrying on with swimming and lunch all around the gypsies as if nothing had happened. It caused considerable outrage at the time. Lol!

by Anonymousreply 20June 3, 2018 5:15 AM
Lol!

by Anonymousreply 21June 3, 2018 5:18 AM

I don't recall that drowning incident or the alleged controversy.

by Anonymousreply 22June 3, 2018 6:09 AM

What a deplorable thread.
meanwhile stupid Italian women (all European women in general) are not having babies!

Women aren't birthing machines. They live their one given life as they see fit. If that means not having as many children as you'd like for your demographic race, then tough luck, buddy. Also, civilizations come and go. Italy and other countries haven't been around forever, nor will they be around in the future. The sooner you accept that fact in your exceedingly short (and insignificant) life, the better you'll feel.

by Anonymousreply 23June 3, 2018 7:07 AM

Western Europe made a huge mistake in the 1950s by beginning to let in people from Turkey etc. and not requiring them to assimilate/acculturate. It's just gotten worse.

They should have created a fortress Europe, a truly unified EU, and let in only a trickle of immigrants, fully assimilating them along the way. Now they're in chaos. When the Iron Wall fell, they'd have had even more easily assimilable immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe as well.

I don't know how they're going to survive the onslaught and NOT become totally reactionary.

by Anonymousreply 24June 3, 2018 7:17 AM

Europe doesn't need babies. Fuck that. They can be like Japan, Korea, and Taiwan - robots and AI.

by Anonymousreply 26June 3, 2018 8:03 AM

As you all already know, Italians characteristics vary by region. The South is culturally conservative but not necessarily racist or right-wing. They voted for the populist Five Star Movement largely driven by concern pocket book issues. The North, on the other hand, voted for the right-wing League (formerly the Northern League) mainly due to anti-migrant sentiment, and nativist concerns. Both the North and the South are also rebelling against a bunch of unpopular policies imposed by the European Union.

Central Italy has traditionally always been the most left-wing region of Italy and they stayed loyal to the Democratic Party. These include the city of Rome (but not large swathes of the surrounding region of Lazio which is culturally southern and voted for Five Star), Most of Tuscany (including Florence and the infamously far-left/communist port city of Livorno), Umbria (includes Perugia) and Marche (includes Ancona). Add to these the neighbouring Northern region of Emilia_Romagna (especially the city of Bologna) and here you have the hotbed of Italian leftism, socialism and communism. Kudos to them for rejecting populism.

I'll be moving to Florence for one year and I'm so pleased it is compatible with my progressive politics.

by Anonymousreply 27June 3, 2018 8:03 AM

DLers are so dumb. One of the new government’s actions is to put a stop to the right of gay people to adopt. They’ve also promised their voters that gay marriage will not be allowed, which is a deviation from the path the ousted centre-left government had set Italy on.

I’ve always known DLers are not true progressives and many are actually racist.

by Anonymousreply 28June 3, 2018 8:43 AM

R27 You boast about your "progressive politics".

What does that mean in terms of inviting penniless, hungry hordes of Muhammudans (with Medieval brains) into your nation?

by Anonymousreply 29June 3, 2018 8:56 AM

They’ve just announced they are going to rollback and restrict all legislation enacted by the previous government to advance the rights of gay families. But carry on celebrating Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 30June 3, 2018 9:10 AM

R30 Adoption is far less relevant than social and political problems caused by invaders.

by Anonymousreply 31June 3, 2018 9:43 AM

They may be a convenient scapegoat, but migrants aren’t the cause of Italy’s problems. And most don’t want to stay there anyway.

by Anonymousreply 34June 3, 2018 5:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 35June 3, 2018 5:37 PM

The master cimrinals who own the ECB and IMF are desperate to create new debt slaves to borrow new money into existence. The migrants are debt-free victims. That is the reason for the infestatia of migrants to Europe.

The problem is that you don't know what you're talking about.

Town after town in Tuscany now have the Right in power. Places that were once solidly Leftest are quickly abandoning the leftist parties. Take Pistoia for an example, it was for 70 years ruled by the left... it now has a far right administration. It also a happens to one of the nicest towns in the region. The same with Arezzo. Cascina is ruled by the Lega.

You mention Livorno... it is now 5Star.

Florence and Pisa will be next.

by Anonymousreply 37June 3, 2018 5:48 PM

That Guardian article is such utter bullshit.

By the way, in the March 4th election...78% of registered voters, voted. That's an incredible figure.

Italians don't want to be Europe's dumping ground for African migrants. Period.

by Anonymousreply 38June 3, 2018 5:52 PM

R9: That's why a lot of American people voted for Donald Trump. He acknowledged the problem with open borders during the debates in 2016. Hillary Clinton wanted to allow even more people from other countries into America at the expense of legal citizens.

by Anonymousreply 39June 3, 2018 5:55 PM

[R3] The men I saw lounging around and/or hustling people were not gypsies, but African migrants. Gypsies have their own cons going on.

by Anonymousreply 42June 3, 2018 6:27 PM

The mass migration of economic refugees will be nothing compared the future mass migration of climate change refugees. When Pacific islands go underwater and Middle East and parts of Africa become virtually uninhabitable, all those people will be fleeing in numbers that can't be stopped without armies engaging in mass murder.

by Anonymousreply 43June 3, 2018 6:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 48June 3, 2018 8:32 PM

The problem here is that there isn’t enough money from Italy on its own, to provide for the migrants. It’s an untenable situation. The migrants keep coming, all day, every day, all night, every night. And I don’t fault the migrants. They want a better life, and are coming from countries with no opportunity, no job market, nothing. Of course they want better. But this is not going to work out.

This crisis is one of the reasons why we are seeing our world turn authoritarian. It is not a mistake. It is purposeful, and by design.

by Anonymousreply 49June 3, 2018 9:00 PM
Western Europe made a huge mistake in the 1950s by beginning to let in people from Turkey etc. and not requiring them to assimilate/acculturate. It's just gotten worse. They should have created a fortress Europe, a truly unified EU.

Western Europeans were much too busy killing and mass murdering each other in the 1940's, to be concerned with immigration.

"They should have created a fortress." HA! Don't make me fucking laugh. You speak of "they," as if Europeans actually liked each other. They HATED each other, and still do. There is no Europe, aside from the geographical designation.

These are countries with different languages and cultures, with the only similarities between them, being that they're white.

Give me a fucking break.

This "one Europe" idea is completely ridiculous. They naver have been, nor will they ever be one Europe.

I'm a Democrat, I voted for Obama and Hilary but I wanted the Democrats to at least address this issue, not say welcome with open arms. The influx of all those refugees and migrants scared a lot of people and the majority were young men, not families or children. The Dems need to address people's fears about refugees because this one of the big reasons Trump won.
The influx of all those refugees and migrants scared a lot of people and the majority were young men, not families or children. The Dems need to address people's fears about refugees because this one of the big reasons Trump won.

"Scared" and "people's fears" being the operative words.

That what these right wing cunts try to do. Spread this unfounded fear about immigrants, who are actually the ONLY ones doing these menial jobs in Western Countries.

While hateful right wing conservatives demonize these people, the immigrants are busy cleaning your toilets, taking care of your kids, doing housekeeping in your hotel rooms, sweeping your floors, collecting your garbage, and serving you your fast food.

Meanwhile, the REAL ENEMY of the people - the richest 1% in the world - are getting away with murder and plunder, and nobody is saying a word about them.

Too bad the majority of this world feeds on hate and bigotry, rather than seeing the real source of the problem.

by Anonymousreply 52June 3, 2018 9:37 PM

Be realistic, R52, Trump had a message and it got people to the polls. And he exploited the fear of refugees/migrants. People are too stupid to take in what you just said. Hilary's "I'm with Her" was so weak and meh. Yes, we see them cleaning our toilets but the small town I grew up in central California was overwhelmed by migrants to where it is not livable anymore and my family had to leave because of gang infestation.. But people like you don't want to acknowledge that because it is not politically correct. But those are real issues the majority looks at.

by Anonymousreply 53June 3, 2018 9:55 PM

R52 Shut up, please.

by Anonymousreply 54June 3, 2018 10:14 PM
That what these right wing cunts try to do. Spread this unfounded fear about immigrants, who are actually the ONLY ones doing these menial jobs in Western Countries.

I know nothing about Italy and the situation here.

First of all, Italians do menial jobs. And the Left has worked very hard over the decades for workers rights and decent pay.

Funny that you want to destroy all of that with mass immigration.

The menial jobs that Italians don't want to do can be filled with LEGAL immigrants.

............
The influx of all those refugees and migrants scared a lot of people and the majority were young men, not families or children.

r24 the Turks were imported as cheap labour and nothing more. They were treated like shit, and mind you they were NOT radical/conservative Muslims, and they were not given the same rights as Germans. They didn't assimilate because they weren't allowed to become citizens, nor were their children. They existed in this odd legal limbo that didn't match their family situations. The younger generation were not old country, but not fully accepted by Teutonic Germans, either. The only way they could move up economically was to open their own shops in their own communities.

By the time the blood born rules were relaxed, an isolated, bitter subclass had been created. And historically, that never goes well.

by Anonymousreply 105June 4, 2018 5:46 AM

I was in the south of France in 2012 and I could not believe all the migrants, obviously Africans, living in the industrial side of town. It was like one long shanty town under the freeways, hundreds of people openly living, sleeping, cooking their food and leaving their clothes strewn everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 106June 4, 2018 6:00 AM

“They didn't assimilate because they weren't allowed to become citizens, nor were their children.”

And ... they didn’t assimilate because the women were not allowed by their husbands to leave the home and work. Which meant that many of them never learnt German. The girls were not allowed to date unless chaperoned by a brother because they didn’t want them to be whores sure like the German women.

Nobody is bombing Africa. And 99% of the hordes of illegal immigrants in Italy are African. Florence is no longer safe for tourists and Italians alike; Moroccan youths attack and rob them. It is a myth that the migrants will do jobs that Europeans refuse. In Sweden, which has a longer history of immigration, there is a report from the government of the failure to integrate the migrants into work. They view welfare as an entitlement and have no desire to work or see it as an obligation. Frankly, they bring nothing good. They make wherever they go resemble the shithole they came from. But Italy will face a big problem in reversing illegal immigration, due to the fact that there are those who profit from it - the Mafia and the NGOs.

I understand part of the reason they're leaving is war (e.g. Syria) but mass migrations have caused huge problems throughout history (Roman Empire, for one). Surely there's enough land they could put them somewhere, like in Siberia or somewhere there's a lot of empty space.

Italian police bust Tunisian human-trafficking ring

Italian police broke up a gang including suspects with jihadist sympathies who charged migrants thousands of euros to rush them in speedboats across the Mediterranean from Tunisia, officials said on Tuesday. Officers arrested 13 Italian, Tunisian and Moroccan suspects in a dawn raid on the network accused of trafficking people and contraband cigarettes, a police spokesman told AFP.

The traffickers brought migrants from Nabeul in north-eastern Tunisia to Trapani on the west coast of Sicily, police said in a separate statement.

The gang would bring between ten and 15 people a time, earning up to €70,000 per four-hour crossing, with hundreds of kilos of contraband cigarettes also stashed in the boats.

The police statement said that "some members" of the network had jihadist sympathies, showing "hostile attitudes to Western culture" and "spreading propaganda via fake profiles on social media".

In a wiretapped telephone conversation, one of the gang's associates asked fellow members to pray for him while he went to France to carry "dangerous actions, after which he might not be able to return".

Since the summer of 2017, Italy has seen a rise in Tunisian migrants arriving in Sicily or on the island of Lampedusa, despite a repatriation agreement with the Tunisian government.

The Italian Interior Ministry says 6,000 Tunisians landed in 2017 and more than 1,300 have arrived since the start of this year.

That number, however, does not include the so-called "ghost landings", of which the only trace is wet clothes found on the beaches of western Sicily.

Italy's new government in diplomatic row after accusing Tunisia of sending 'convicts' in migrant boats

Italy’s new coalition government had a diplomatic row on its hands on its first full working day on Monday after Matteo Salvini, the interior minister, accused Tunisia of sending “convicts” in migrant boats across the Mediterranean.

Mr Salvini, the head of the anti-migrant, hard-Right League and also a deputy prime minister, made the remarks on Sunday during a visit to Pozzallo, a port in Sicily where rescued migrants are brought ashore.

It was his first official trip – the government was only sworn in on Friday, ending three months of political deadlock.

Angered by the comments, the Tunisian government called in the Italian ambassador on Monday, expressing “profound amazement for the remarks of the Italian interior minister regarding immigration.”

Tunis said Mr Salvini’s comments “do not reflect the cooperation between the two countries in the management of immigration and indicate an incomplete knowledge of the various mechanisms of coordination that exist between the Tunisian and Italian authorities”.

During his visit to a migrant reception centre, Mr Salvini said he could see no reason why Tunisians were turning up on Italian shores because Tunisia was “a free and democratic country where there is no war, famine or pestilence.”

The North African country was deliberately encouraging its “convicts” to try to reach Europe, he claimed. He used an Italian word that can also mean “felons” or “good-for-nothings”.

Dozens of Migrants Drown Off Tunisia and Turkey; Hundreds Rescued Off Spain

Rescuers said on Sunday that dozens of migrants had drowned off the coasts of Tunisia and Turkey, while hundreds had been rescued off Spain, as the flow of people seeking to get to Europe continued despite tightened controls.

At least 46 migrants died when their boat sank off Tunisia’s coast, the country’s Defense Ministry said on Sunday. The Coast Guard rescued 67 others, and the operation was continuing, the ministry said in a statement.

The migrants were of Tunisian and other nationalities, according to the ministry. Security officials said the boat had been packed with about 180 migrants, including around 80 from other African countries.

[bold]Human traffickers increasingly use Tunisia as a starting point for migrants heading to Europe because Libya’s Coast Guard, aided by armed groups, has tried to stem the flow from that country. The migrants often depart in makeshift boats from Tunisia, heading for Sicily.[/bold]

Five migrants found dead en route to Spain as police arrest 19 smugglers

16:17 CEST+02:00 Five migrants have died trying to cross the Mediterranean, the Spanish coastguard said Thursday after rescuing more than 180 others, while they searched for another two boats with dozens aboard. Rescue boats, helicopters and planes from southern Spain carried out a series of rescue operations late Wednesday and Thursday, a spokeswoman said. Since Wednesday evening, 185 people in five boats had been rescued.

But at least one boat had capsized, and four migrants were already dead in the water some 40 kilometres (25 miles) off Morocco's coast when rescuers arrived, she said. Another of those rescued died later of cardiac arrest.

On Thursday, the coastguards were searching for another two boats in the Mediterranean with at least 45 people on board.

Initially, helicopters and planes had been grounded because of bad weather but they were eventually able to fly, joining rescue boats in the search.

The news came as police said they had arrested 19 people for illegally transporting migrants across the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain using jet skis or small inflatable boats.

They allegedly charged 4,000 euros ($4,900) per crossing and another 500 euros if the person trying to get to Europe needed lodging once in Spain, police said in a statement. The Guardia Civil also found several kilograms of drugs and thousands of euro in cash during a series of raids.

Spain is the third busiest gateway for migrants arriving in Europe, still far behind Italy but catching up fast with Greece.

Many Africans undertaking the long route to Europe are choosing to avoid crossing danger-ridden Libya to get to Italy along the so-called central Mediterranean route, choosing instead to get there via Morocco and Spain.

According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 22,400 people arrived in Spain by sea last year, nearly triple the number for 2016. Some 223 people died along the way.

So far this year, at least 3,778 migrants have arrived in Spain, with more than 180 losing their lives trying to cross the Mediterranean.

Me either, R191. If these people can put together thousands of euros to pay the smugglers, why couldn't they use that money to create a decent life for themselves where they are? Several thousand euros would go a long way in Morocco or Tunisia.

by Anonymousreply 194June 5, 2018 1:08 PM
why couldn't they use that money to create a decent life for themselves where they are? Several thousand euros would go a long way in Morocco or Tunisia.

Morocco and Tunisia don't want sub-Saharian Africans, whom they refer to pejoratively as abid, Arabic for slave. If they stay home, that money won't go very far because in tribal societies, they are responsible for the support of not only their immediate families, but aunts, uncles, cousins as well as clan members. In most cases, the family pools the money and sends one male. If he makes it, he brings over as many family members as he can and remits back money for those who remain.

The only way to halt this invasion is for the EU to change its migrant and human rights laws. Which isn't going to happen any time soon.

From the article posted above.."Samuel Pieta from Cameroon lives on the top floor of one block. He is 33, has been in Italy since 2011 but has never worked in the country."

So he has been in the country for SEVEN years and has failed to do anything? He's not in jail! The libraries are free, there are computers there, he could have spent the seven years learning the language and a range of skills. If he had the wherewithall to make it from Cameroon, he could certainly learn to use a computer. Most recreational computer users are self-taught. I learned to do almost all of the maintenance and many repairs on my Saab from Youtube videos. It drives me crazy to see old Italian men, some in their 70s, doing heavy lifting and carrying in the produce markets, which open at 5 am. Admittedly most of these guys would never give up their job, but can't some of these young, strong African men make a few €€ helping out? That is something you never see. What you do see is gangs of them lounging around, smoking.

Italians have a long, long history with invasion from North Africa and the Middle East. They know what the fuck is up with these people.

by Anonymousreply 215June 25, 2018 6:56 PM

no, they don't. italy has never ever been militaristic, even going back to the end of the Roman empire. you're woefully ill-informed

by Anonymousreply 216June 25, 2018 7:01 PM

Let's be honest here. The Italians were rescuing tons of people not long ago from the waters. So we can't say they aren't a compassionate people. They couldn't stand to see anyone drown. They were duped by evil traffickers. Now they are forced into self survival mode. They tried to do the humane thing. Can't expect them to committed suicide. They aren't a superpower and can't generate their own economy. They heavily rely on tourism. They built their country for centuries and deserve tourist dollars. They craft some of the world's highest end products. Enormous pride is taken with their productions. Allowing such a nation to be tainted is a slap in the face to their ancestors. These migrants have no conception of the work and sweat it takes to build such a land. They have no respect.

If Europeans were stuck in the lands the migrants hail from they would make something out of nothing. Cooperation and innovation are the traits needed. Migrants stay home and do the work neccesary then own it!

by Anonymousreply 218June 25, 2018 7:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 219June 25, 2018 7:15 PM

Let us not forget the outpouring of love and compassion by the German people when the first wave of migrants entered Germany. Citizens opened their homes. Craftspeople took on apprentices. German people raided their linen closets and brought them to processing centers. It was beautiful. Hired loads of these people. They were duped by Merkel who was only looking for cheap labor. Cheaper than the Mexican guest workers (w/no shot at citizenship, btw) who abounded all over Germany. Their stringent guest worker program basically fucked Mexicans as they could not receive benefits or stay for long. Merkel fucked everyone as Mexicans are even harder workers than the Germans themselves. Not many people realise that most Mexicans are of the mongoloid race. They are different from most indigenous Americans because they are Inuit based. They're Eskimos not really NA. Inuit are the hardest working people at survival on the globe. So Mexican work ethic didn't come from nowhere. Their physical stature is built to survive harsh frozen landscape. They also meshed right into Germany's Catholic churches. They helped support those local churches.

Merkel got greedy and undercut those guest workers to up her nation's wealth with basically indentured ME servants.

Never forgot when the Omen was announced with migrant dwellings being littered and dirty. This is neurotic ally clean Germany! Germans are rule abiding people. Their trains run on the honor system. As an attractive, light white American/Canadian I worried about getting in trouble there.

This whole migrant problem everywhere is brought to innocent, decent citizens by a bunch of greedy fuckheads. All at your expense. Eventually to the migrants' expense but the innocent duped masses will be blamed for trying to self persevere.

by Anonymousreply 220June 25, 2018 7:45 PM

Let me add how Merkel fucked Americans as well. It was a breeze for Mexicans to get guest worker status in Mexico for up to a years time. Vacation in Spain for awhile then reapply. The deal was you better not scheme to put roots down. No socialist rights. They had their own little enclaves provided and were watched like hawks. They did have the best nightclubs, I've got to say. So now Mexicans are more inclined to risk a better life by crossing the US border. So not only did she screw Europe, she screwed the US as well. Let's not forget the German government isolating America's auto plants and contracting instead by building plants in Mexico cheaply then selling their cars to Americans at at premium.

Germany can't seem to go more than 50 years without causing this planet major turmoil. Why is that? Major superiority complex with them.

by Anonymousreply 221June 25, 2018 8:11 PM

Correction: guest worker status in Germany, not Mexico ^

Italy's hardline interior minister, Matteo Salvini, announced Friday that Italian ports would be closed "all summer" to NGO ships which rescue migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean from Africa to Europe. "The NGOs will only see Italy on a postcard," quipped Salvini, who is also the new deputy prime minister and head of the far-right League party.

"The ports will be closed all summer," he said on Italian radio. He added that the ban would concern not only access to ports but also "the furnishing of fuel to the NGOs."

"As the Italian military tells me as well as the Libyans, the NGOs help traffickers, consciously or not," said Salvini. But he stressed that Italy with other states "would continue to save all those who need to be saved."

Salvini's comments come on the day that a European Union summit reached a deal on migration after Italy had threatened to scupper it if its demands for help were not met.

"Foreign NGOs, with foreign crews, flying a foreign flag and financed by foreign institutions will no longer step foot in Italy," said Italy's far-right interior minister in the interview with RAI.

A populist government was sworn in this year in Italy, largely in reaction to increased migration flows from North, West and the Horn of Africa in the last five years to the Mediterranean country. Curbing migration is one of the key objectives of the Five Star Movement-La Lega populist coalition government.

"Finally Europe has been forced to accept the argument of Italy's proposal," Salvini commented, noting that past Italian governments had been ignored by Brussels. "Our numerous demands have been accepted. Italy is coming out of its isolation and playing a new role."

The news comes as 100 people were declared missing by the Libyan coastguard after a boat carrying migrants in the Mediterranean capsized, reports Repubblica. Aid organization Medecins Sans Frontieres accused EU authorities of negligence vis-a-vis human life.

“EU member states are abdicating their responsibilities to save lives and deliberately condemning vulnerable people to be trapped in Libya, or die at sea,” said Karline Kleijer, MSF head of emergencies, in a statement on June 29th. “They do this fully aware of the extreme violence and abuses that refugees and migrants suffer in Libya.”

Last week was the deadliest so far this year on the Mediterranean, according to MSF. The organization stated that at least 220 people drowned. "These were avoidable tragedies," adds the statement.

Most EU leaders nevertheless hailed the new deal, the details of which remain unclear, as a breakthrough. "We will protect better, cooperate more and we reaffirm our principles," said French President Macron on Friday morning.

Macron tweeted: "In the face of the migration crisis: Europe lives up to its history."

Austria's populist chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, hailed the agreement. "For the first time we have an accord on refugee centres outside the EU... it's a big step. If we can only ensure that people do not come to Europe we could end trafficking and massively reduce the number of refugees coming into Europe. What is important is that this is implemented soon," said Chancellor Kurz, reports AFP.

The central European Visegrad states of Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic known as the V4 crowed victory. "Quotas were an issue for four years, and now everyone has dropped the topic. It was a big fight, the V4 was united and we achieved our goal. It's a big success," Czech PM Andrej Babis said.

In another development, Germany said Friday it had sealed deals with Greece and Spain to take back migrants registered in those countries, in a step toward defusing a row in Chancellor Angela Merkel's fragile ruling coalition.

"Greece and Spain are prepared to accept asylum seekers who are in future identified by German authorities at the German-Austrian border and who have a Eurodac registration in those countries," the German government said, referring to the EU asylum fingerprint database.

France joins Italy's criticism of NGO migrant rescue ships

How to save lives without becoming "taxi services" for people smugglers? Charity-run rescue boats operating in the Mediterranean face a dilemma and their activity is being increasingly criticized by politicians in Europe. Humanitarian groups have been operating rescue ships in the sea between war-torn Libya and Italy for several years, plucking tens of thousands of migrants from dangerously overcrowded and ill-equipped boats, sometimes from the sea itself.

Organizations such as France's SOS Mediterranee, Germany's Mission Lifeline or Spain's Proactiva Open Arms are driven by a logic of saving lives: without them, even more people would have perished than the roughly 1,000 already dead or missing in the Mediterranean this year.

But French President Emmanuel Macron has now added his voice to critics who see the NGOs as helping the violent gangs that make millions offering mostly African migrants a passage to Europe. He said on Tuesday that Mission Lifeline had defied "all the rules" when it took migrants onto its boat last week when the Libyan coastguard was already intervening.

"We cannot permanently accept this situation," he warned in comments in Rome, adding: "In the end we are playing into the hands of smugglers by reducing the risks of the journey."

The Lifeline boat, with 233 migrants on board, has been in limbo for days in the Mediterranean as a result of a new policy from Italy's new populist government which has been preventing rescue boats from docking in its ports. The arrival of nearly 700,000 people by boat since 2013 partly explains the rise to power of the anti-immigrant League and populist Five Star Movement, with the decision to block ports backed by a majority of Italians.

Italy claims victory as EU leaders agree on last minute reforms on migration

It took a full night of negotiations but Italy nevertheless scored a victory for its migration policy with a pan-European deal which will see a spate of new measures and a more collaborative approach among Member States. "Today Italy is no longer alone. We are satisfied," Conte told reporters after an all-night summit in Brussels during which he had vetoed a joint statement until he won concessions from the other 27 leaders, reports AFP. Italy's new populist Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte hailed the agreement on Friday June 29th, stating that his country was "no longer alone" after securing a deal with EU leaders for steps to tackle migration.

The agreement will see several major changes to the former policy, whereby migrants arriving in the EU had to be registered in their country of arrival.

"A new approach has been adopted regarding sea rescues: from now on we foresee actions based on sharing and therefore coordinated among the Member States," reads the agreed document, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

The new approach envisages a more coordinated approach to resettling refugees in the EU, as well as new rules for NGO rescue ships operating in the Mediterranean.

A key concession that the populist Italian government managed to extract from its EU partners is how rescue missions should be governed. "All the ships that cross the Mediterranean, therefore also NGO vessels, must respect the laws and must not interfere with the operations of the Libyan Coast Guard," states the document, according to Italian daily Repubblica.

Merkel agrees to border camps to hang onto power.

BERLIN — Chancellor Angela Merkel, who staked her legacy on welcoming hundreds of thousands of migrants into Germany, agreed on Monday to build border camps for asylum seekers and to tighten the border with Austria in a political deal to save her government.

It was a spectacular turnabout for a leader who has been seen as the standard-bearer of the liberal European order but who has come under intense pressure at home from the far right and from conservatives in her governing coalition over her migration policy.

Although the move to appease the conservatives exposed her growing political weakness, Ms. Merkel will limp on as chancellor. For how long is unclear. The nationalism and anti-migrant sentiment that has challenged multilateralism elsewhere in Europe is taking root — fast — in mainstream German politics.

Ms. Merkel agreed to the latest policy after an insurrection over migration policy led by her interior minister, Horst Seehofer, threatened to bring down her coalition.

Both the left and the right are responsible for the global migration crisis, as they both overplayed their ideology. The left has branded anyone opposed to free migration as a racist, which shut down constructive problem solving and created a backlash, thus Trump.

The right has an irrational objection to distributing any and all forms of birth control where it is desperately needed in the third world. Population control WILL take place; if not medically, then via war and/or famine. Hard to reconcile that violence is more palatable to our religious extremists than a medical intervention.

How is it possible to miss simple things, like the obligation of sitting politicians to get taxpayers' explicit consent before launching programs with huge long term welfare expense implications (like absorbing over a million non-citizen potential recipients in a couple of years)? Political correctness versus financial resource realities ?

Germany's generous welfare state will pay billions every year to supply these migrants with housing, cash allowances, and health and dental care - only to support a deeply frustrated foreign-born proletariat that will not integrate into German society, because that requires steady work, and exposure to locals.

by Anonymousreply 264July 4, 2018 1:56 AM

What you are seeing here is the inherent failure of the implementation of the Liberal World Order. In a lot of ways, Chancellor Merkel was the last adherent to this philosophy in power. From Brexit to Nationalistic movements in Austria, Netherlands, Italy and even Mexico, not to mention Donald J Trump, the open borders, free trade, world citizen mantras of the Liberal World Order are crumbling.

It would seem that the people of the world like their countries and national identities. The subjugation of the working class to the elitist liberal policies are anathema to the psyche of vast swathes of the citizenry. Just as Marxism and Communism failed so too will this attempt at merging disparate economies, financial institutions and governmental policy bodies under a common worldview philosophy.

People care about sovereignty. People care about their own unique cultures and values. Forcing egalitarian principals across such vast populations was doomed to failure. EU is falling apart. multi-national trade deals are falling apart. How long until the Euro zone disintegrates under the weight of sovereign debt?

Let's hope, as we transition away from the liberal, collective models, that the world does not over-correct into authoritarian, hyper-nationalistic fiefdoms (may be too late with the rise of people like Erdogan, Duerte and maybe even Xi in China).

Put a stake in the Liberal World Order. It's done.

by Anonymousreply 265July 4, 2018 3:21 AM

Surely anyone can see the differences between migration where people bring their skills and desire to contribute and illegal migration or asylum seeking. Wealthy societies have an obligation to aid victims of war, famine/drought or persecution. But people with no marketable skills,no means of support, barely literate in their own language, who come from a country that is not at war, not suffering famine or drought, who are not persecuted for their religion or otherwise, and whose arrival is through breaching a border - that is a different story.

by Anonymousreply 266July 4, 2018 3:33 AM

If you have an advanced degree, or a million in cash, or a unique talent, I say “Welcome To America”! You will add to our society.

If you have none of the above, and little potential to achieve them, then traditional immigration routes are still available. A welfare state cannot coexist with open borders.

The whole point of allowing peasant class people to come here and assimiliate is: 1. Poor guy with nothing arrives; 2. Poor guy gets a job as a janitor and has kids; 3. Kids go to college and are 100% assimilated Americans; 4. Kids (or grandkids) elected Governor or President.

The reason you want to do it that way is that people who arrive with educations and technical skills already are taking jobs from Americans. Rich guys are arrogant and think they’re already a success so they don’t have to accommodate anybody else. They’ve already made it and they have no loyalty to the USA. They have no skin in the game. They are here to bring their foreign attitudes and be accommodated.

Poor people have to fit in. Anything they get is an improvement over what they had before. This inspires loyalty. Money without loyalty is dangerous.

R268 What some writing here do not seem to understand is this quote :

“The migration question will decide whether Europe can survive,” Angela Merkel told German MPs on Wednesday as she defended the planned camps."

The migration question will decide whether Europe can survive. My prediction is that it won't.

I am pretty sure this will never happen with the draft-dodging sub-Saharan Muslim migrants who are arriving in Europe. They and their children will be a disruptive, non-productive, resource-consuming underclass well into the future.

The same migrants are also coming to the US, up through Central America and Mexico, R272. People think the migrants are all Mexican but that is not true. Mexicans can easily be bused back. People from Libya, the Congo and Sudan, not so much.

Why is the immigration status of the statue protester being withheld? If she gets deported it cannot possibly have been worth it.

The Congolese immigrant who climbed the Statue of Liberty is a naturalized US citizen, ie, she followed the rules and regulations and the long wait period to do things legally. Curious that the media almost always omits that fact and just calls her an immigrant.

Immigration law and policy and quotas are being circumvented by attempting to reclassify everyone as a refugee and to include dv and fear of gang violence rather than political persecution.

Cannot really bus people back to Senegal from Texas.

Looking at the impact on the EU, in unchecked migration really a good idea? It seems like a novel one too. Nations have always protected and controlled their borders, unless they were being invaded. This Open Society idea is being imposed, but is it good for ordinary citizens? France, UK, Italy, Germany and Greece seem to suggest, maybe not.

The French government has recently said that African nations must stop this. We shall see if they back their words with actions.

Read the thread, R284. Did you actually believe that mass migration overwhelming Western countries was just some organic, spontaneous thing?

by Anonymousreply 286July 7, 2018 1:56 PM

The elephant (do we still have any?) on the European and world "couch" is human overpopulation driving 28,000,000 migrants worldwide. The world order is under threat because open borders can only lead to constant immigration from primarily Muslim North Africa and the Middle East. Nothing against Muslims, but they have depowered their women's right to choose, get an education, and compete with men in the workplace, all of which determine how many children a woman will choose to bring into this already overcrowded world, including Europe.

Furthermore, population density stress is the primary cause of all of our "diseases of civilization" and they are killing us ever more effectively. Crowded animals have reduced fertility and fecundity, just like Europe currently. However, this effect is much studied with lab animals and ultimately ends with species extinction. This runaway train is headed for a bad end and open borders are part of the problem. Muslim countries (and Catholic, as well) will only be forced to change their cultures and give women reproductive choice when they can no longer feed their starving children or are dying from AIDS.

The great European migrations to the Americas saved Europe then, but there are no more frontiers, unless we infect other planets with our unwanted billions. This is not a difficult problem, if we're willing to face the truth.

No, I don't. I just wanted to hear your opinion.

I think it is to break down countries in the push for one-corporate-state globalism.

by Anonymousreply 289July 7, 2018 2:25 PM

It needs to be depicted in the most sympathy garnering light, R288.

Many posters had ancestors that arrived here by boat, they did not have a comfortable trip, and many were sent back.

In the past, immigrants (a different word than migrant) were expected to assimilate, learn the language and support themselves and their families. Now, many expect lifelong benefits and to impose their culture on the new country. The analogy of times passed does not hold. Bit more like the Crusades.

by Anonymousreply 290July 7, 2018 2:26 PM

Seems that way, huh, R289...T and migrants have the same financial and political/societal backers and are seemingly chaos agents. It is surreal when prior conspiracy theories, like Walmarts being turned into holding facilities turn out to be true.

People use words like prophesy but instead, it seems to have been an agreed upon plan.

What is happening in all these countries now that the young men have left? A small number of women and children are included among the migrants for the optics, but what of the elderly left behind? The similarities to the Crusades cannot be discounted but due to the media framing and language, has anyone noticed?

R269
The reason you want to do it that way is that people who arrive with educations and technical skills already are taking jobs from Americans.

Those immigrants with capital and/or skills don’t “take jobs from Americans”, they create jobs.

A doctor has to employ nurses, and pays for babysitting/food/transport/etc., as does any other skilled worker. Very wealthy people bring lots of capital that can be put to more productive use in a free market system, making everyone in the country wealthier in the process. (Not that the US is a free market, it’s just the least bad big market)

All them pay taxes.

Automatic green cards for people who meet a checklist of higher education, liberal culture, high net worth, and special skills would be beneficial to our society. Allowing unchecked migration of low skill, low education people into a welfare state is a recipe for disaster.

Intelligent, healthy, hard working people are a plus to any society.

There was a video created but the media is silent and police and court reports are heavily redacted. Italy is wise to take these steps. Once the article opens you can click to translate.
