Meryl Streep and Reese Witherspoon Are Caught in a "Power Struggle" on Set of 'Big Little Lies'

The struggle is real on the set of Big Little Lies. With Season 2 of the hit HBO show in full production mode, there is some mounting tension between Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep. Sources exclusively told In Touch that Reese, Meryl, and their co-stars Nicole Kidman, Zoë Kravitz, and Laura Dern were seen having dinner together. And while that seems incredibly normal for actresses working on the same show to do, the eyewitness said Reese was "really unfriendly" to everyone at the table.

Not only did she seem stuck up, but she also acted like she was the star of the show. "I could tell Reese thinks she wears the pants," the insider revealed. "There's definitely a power struggle between them."

This news is shocking, but also bizarre because the story — for those who have yet to watch or read the book that it's based on — actually has more than one main star. It follows the lives of five women played by Reese, Laura, Nicole, Zoë, and Shailene Woodley as they try to raise their children in an ultra-rich California town. Meryl hopped on the project just recently to play the mother of Nicole's character's late husband.

Reese, who originally optioned the show, wanted to sign on as an executive producer because of the female-driven dynamic. "So often I'm the only woman on a set full of men," she told People. "It became this really interesting group of women whose work I'd always loved. Getting to work with them every day was a pleasure." Because Reese has been behind the project from the get-go, might be a bit of insight as to why she feels like she is in charge.

However, to have this power struggle is unfortunate because of how Reese started her journey on Big Little Lies with women empowerment in mind. And she was even excited about Meryl coming on board when she first heard the news.

"I called Nicole and I was like, 'Is this real life? Is this really happening?' And then I got off the phone with Nicole and I, like, hugged myself gently for a minute," she explained on Late Night with Seth Meyers. "And said, 'This is really happening. You're really working with Meryl Streep.'" It's unclear what went wrong, but it looks like Reese's opinions have changed.

They were having an intense conversation about which of them has the more strangely shaped nose and jaw.

It's not the first time Reese has had trouble with a ham co-star.

Some people really let power go to their heads.

by Anonymousreply 3June 3, 2018 1:57 AM

Meryl is a bitch. That's the truth. The cast all got along wonderfully on the original show. Reese is the producer and naturally takes pride and interest in all aspects of the production. Kidman's involvement is what helped to get it made. Streep now wants to take credit when in fact she is a minor and very old actress. They should not have succumbed to another season. The story was over. No one needs ladyhawke snooping around like Jessica Fletcher into what was a justifiable murder. I won't be watching, or maybe I will. Reese was the best thing about Big Little Lies though Kidman deservedly was praised. Witherspoon is a much more resourceful actress than given credit for. Meryl is a ham sandwich with French's mustard and pineapple relish. The only thing she brings to the show is her saggy ass slumming and liquid facelift. #sheknew

Despite all the lip service given to women's empowerment, most women cannot get along when working together. Especially when one is in an authority position over the others. All-female workplaces are generally nightmarish.

I bring a talking stick, hash brownies and real empathy to every sisterly set I enjoin.

Just saying.

by Anonymousreply 14June 3, 2018 3:34 AM

M is a professional. Of course she won't say this while filming. Ask her after the show is done and bring a big umbrella to the interview.

by Anonymousreply 15June 3, 2018 3:56 AM

I can’t believe you all believe this “insider” garbage.

“Despite all the lip service given to women's empowerment, most women cannot get along when working together. Especially when one is in an authority position over the others. All-female workplaces are generally nightmarish.”

Oh, yes, because the corporate world, by and large run by men, truly is paradise.

by Anonymousreply 17June 3, 2018 4:29 AM

Team Reese - M needs to be taken down

by Anonymousreply 18June 3, 2018 5:01 PM

They are both unappealing.

When her career was headed south, Reese married a CAA agent. What more do you need to know about her? #traceyflick4life

I wish I could find the video of Nicole trying to take an award out of Reese’s hand as she gave a speech. Not sure if Golden Globes or Emmys.

Reese optioned the book and is a producer. Why wouldn't she think she has more power than the others. This is her baby, M is just appearing in it. Her character isn't more important than the other characters, but as a producer and driving force behind the show, she is more important. The first season was very successful. The second season would have been green lit without M.

by Anonymousreply 31June 18, 2018 9:40 PM

Don't believe a word of this. It's Kidman's doing. She'll do anything to bring attention to herself. She'll insert herself into anything. Malade!

by Anonymousreply 32June 18, 2018 9:42 PM

R13 agree. They're responsible for their own glass ceiling. Not men. Women are their own problem

by Anonymousreply 35June 18, 2018 9:47 PM

r13, I also agree. The worst work environments I've ever experienced were ones that were all-women or mostly women-run.

I also believe this is a bullshit story.

by Anonymousreply 36June 18, 2018 9:48 PM

Backing up what r13 said, I was witness to an office situation in which one senior manager (female) absolutely hated and was threatened by the other less senior female manager. They went at it tooth and nail. It was so toxic I left.

They came up with the story. Ya know, since this shows popularity has already fallen off.

by Anonymousreply 40June 18, 2018 11:46 PM

R40 the show's first season ended and the second season hasn't started airing. It hasn't had a chance to drop or increase in popularity.

by Anonymousreply 41June 19, 2018 1:14 AM

So a waiter is the insider? I do not believe this story.

by Anonymousreply 42June 19, 2018 2:11 AM

Why is Meryl doing this? Isn't she a big movie star?

by Anonymousreply 43June 19, 2018 2:16 AM

Reese "do you know who I am" Witherspoon? No...I can't imagine!

by Anonymousreply 44June 19, 2018 2:26 AM

R43....and the other leads aren't? This is a MEGA star Oscar winning cast

by Anonymousreply 45June 19, 2018 2:27 AM

R13 That's bullshit. The first BLL was fine. I worked on it and there were no problems.

To act like everything is always great when men are working together is bullshit. Usually there is an alpha male that the other guys are too chicken shit to challenge, so that's the guy that sets the tone and all the other guys fall in line. Meanwhile the beta guys talk shit behind the alpha's back and talk shit behind each others back but they never confront each other. I've worked in film and tv with several dozen different crews.

With women it seems if there are a group of them things can go fine but if there are just two or three that's when things can get tense. Women will call shit out though. They don't allow bullshit to go on for long if at all and that is the source of the stereotype. They are always putting each other on blast and checking each other, kind of like drag queens. They just need to perfect the art of letting shit go after the air is cleared.

by Anonymousreply 46June 19, 2018 2:28 AM

People beg Meryl to be in their projects.

I heard that Reese treats young directors, writers and crew bad, but not the actors or producers. So, this would be out of character for her. This is the reason she has to be a producer. She has to cast herself because she was such a bitch to too many people, no one will hire her. If she is causing trouble, she is out. Nicole was the only one who was willing to work with her. The director came on because of Nicole and the book author loved Nicole, not Reese.

I doubt this story is true. If reese is acting up to Nicole, the director or Meryl, she is out.

by Anonymousreply 47June 19, 2018 2:32 AM

Meryl is on a whole other level. Reese is a rom-com actress. Nicole Kidman is talented, but even she is no Meryl. Plus, she embarrassed herself with all that plastic surgery. I don't know. I guess I always figured something like this was beneath someone like Meryl Streep.

by Anonymousreply 48June 19, 2018 2:34 AM

Nicole gave a performance in the first season that was Streep worthy. Actually she was better than Streep. Nicole and Skargard were amazing and deserved all the critical praise. Doesn't matter the medium, excellent is excellent.

There are just things Meryl can't do, she has her wheelhouse but it's a narrow wheelhouse.

by Anonymousreply 49June 19, 2018 2:42 AM

Meryl likes to work. There aren’t that many good roles for women her age. So she is willing to do this. I don’t believe this story for a minute. Sounds like Tabloid fodder to me.

by Anonymousreply 54June 19, 2018 7:00 AM

I watched half of season one before I lost interest.

I'm curious about this season, because it's Andrea Arnold directing.

by Anonymousreply 55June 19, 2018 7:02 AM

That Reese is best friends with Chelsea Handler is all anyone really needs to know about her. Why are the other ladies slumming by having dinner with her in the first place?

by Anonymousreply 56June 19, 2018 7:06 AM

Meryl is doing this because she’s quickly becoming irrelevant. She’s hideous too and better off playing old ladies like she has been.

by Anonymousreply 57June 19, 2018 7:44 AM

[quote]Meryl likes to work. There aren’t that many good roles for women her age.

You'd never know it based on the fact that she's ALWAYS working! Can't she take a day off and let some other actress of her generation get a role for a change? Bitch hoovers up everything. Is she like Larry King and addicted to the attention? Does she think she'll shrivel up and die if she stays home like these people who have plenty of money but refuse to retire out of fear?

by Anonymousreply 58June 19, 2018 11:58 AM
