Michael Moore comes to Roseanne’s Defense

To close, I want to say just how great the new Roseanne show was. It was funny but brutal to watch because it showed how our system of greed has hurt millions of families like the Connors of Illinois. On the final episode last week, Roseanne was addicted to opioids because she couldn't afford the knee surgery she needed, so she suffered along in agonizing pain. Dan, her husband, in order to raise money for her surgery, decided to take a non-union job -- and Roseanne berates him for doing so and letting his union brothers and sisters down. There are a couple quick knocks on Trump, making it clear that the real Roseanne was not writing or running this show. For the past 9 weeks, the new Roseanne show has shined a powerful and necessary light on what it means to be working class in 2018. Her blended family on this new series was white and black and LGBTQ, and her generous neighbors next door were Muslims who forced her to confront her own bigotry.

If only her art could have helped her in her real life.

(Also, let me say this: There's no reason the show has to go just because she's gone. Over the years, TV has found ways to bring Bobby Ewing back from the dead on “Dallas”, forced us to accept the two Darrins on “Bewitched”, and found ways for hit shows to survive when their stars bolted after a year or two [David Caruso on "NYPD Blue", Pernell Roberts on "Bonanza"]. The smart people who were writing this Roseanne series can surely find a way to let the non-bigoted portion of the America's working class [which I can tell you is the VAST majority] have their voice heard on network television. Why should it be silenced by one lost soul?

I've posted very little in any of the Roseanne threads, other than my overall distaste for her, since my reaction is very similar. I've always thought she was a very disturbed person who achieved a level of fame that not only did she not deserve, but allowed her personality disorders to blossom. Her disordered behavior goes way back, even before she became famous. Her treatment of her first husband, of her parents, and of so many of her co-workers were all very telling. But Hollywood will ignore all that, as long as you're making them money. At this point, it has nothing to do about 'making amends', but about getting off social media and going away and facing her demons, and sorting things out.

I believe she’s a mentally ill sociopath, and I also believe she conned Moore into believing that she was a decent person. I think that he’s actually morning a false persona, the one he knew before she went completely bonkers.

It is really difficult for people, especially smart, compassionate people, to understand that there are people out there like Roseanne. They cannot fathom that they were viewing a performance, rather than a genuine person.

What I found appalling is that she grew up around concentration camp survivors, and yet, she found it appropriate to post a picture of herself dressed as Hitler, putting gingerbread cookies in the shape of men, into an oven.

I’ve spent time talking to people who survived concentration camps, when I was a young adult. Their stories are incredibly painful to imagine, and you are never the same after hearing first hand, what these people went through, and survived.

Why can so many people simply not read anymore? Just read the words in front of them? Moore is not making excuses for Rosanne with anything he says. Nor is a taking her side. He's not even coming to her defense. He is just trying to give us a fuller picture of her. Tom Arnold was basically saying these same things in his interview. He just wasn't as articulate as this letter. But he was also saying that she is a sick woman, needing help, espousing hateful views, and who is not the person he once knew. Arnold and Moore also are both clear in saying that she has been used by Trump from the reboot onwards.. Considering Moore is now a target of her ire, I think this letter is pretty remarkable.
