A tasty Mormon classic for Winter.
I thought it was an Amish classic.

Ann Romney is whipping up a batch for John McCain's funeral.

Yum. I can taste the misogyny and inbreeding from here!

Ann Romney would never cook them herself, R3. Mittens won't let her around knives after the incident on their honeymoon,

Yes. Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman, made it on her show. She brought it and some other items to her church's potluck lunch. The recipe title is memorable. She emphasized that the recipe calls for packaged frozen raw shredded potatoes (usually intended for hash brown potatoes) and to not substitute freshly shredded potatoes. She said it was a longtime community cookbook staple. So she took no credit for it. Also, my impression is that such a dairy heavy casserole may have originated in dairy country. I remember it used a lot of cheese and heavy cream. Drummond uses a lot of cheese in her recipes. Of course, she can get it in a grocery store but I think she's probably an hour drive maybe more from one.

One review I read online regarding the “funeral” part:
[quote]I have made this many times and it is always a hit. I am making this along with Cheesy mustard chicken for Sunday dinner. It is the season premier of season 6 Game of Thrones. Someone is going to die for sure!

My mom makes these minus the cornflakes on top, we call them cheesy potatoes.
