Male Fashion Models of the 1960's

Were there any famous male models then?

No.

Not household names but there were male models that worked a lot whose faces you'd recognize from ads and catalogues.

R2: I'm curious about them. A lot is often said about male models from the 1970's &1980's but I'd like to know more about the men who worked in the industry before male modeling became popular.

I've always found this guy to be an incredibly handsome model - though he's from the1970s to early 1980s, not 1960s.

Unlike their female counterparts like Suzy Parker, Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton, etc., male models of the '50s and '60s remained unknown (unnamed) because, frankly, it wasn't a respectable profession for men to pursue. Modeling is a passive endeavor. You're gussied up and told to stand there and look pretty. It was okay for women to be passive and pretty, but for men to be passive and pretty opened them up to ridicule and questions about their masculinity. Most of the men who modeled did is as a side job, to supplement their income while they pursued "real" careers, so they never became celebrated for modeling.

OP, if you're interested, do a google search for a Life magazine story about John Harkrider, an agent in the 1960s who recruited male models by roaming the NYC streets. Google books won't let me post a link.

R4: Yes, Michael Flinn was gorgeous.

R5: Thank you. I'll do that.

For Black Americans in the 1960s, actor Richard Roundtree (famous from the movie "Shaft") was a known fashion model who toured with Ebony Fashion Fair, which presented black models wearing the latest haute couture to audiences throughout America.
