I am surprised Argentina hasn't yet- their peso is in the gutter and inflation is rampant. Their ex president that cunt Cristina Kirchner was good friends with Chavez and worshipped Castro! They used to make fun of her by saying Por Favor...Por Dior.

by Anonymousreply 3May 24, 2018 12:22 AM

OP. Yes. Next question?

by Anonymousreply 4May 24, 2018 12:26 AM

Yes, but with much hotter guys.

No, they have free elections. They'll get aide. Same thing with Argentina. Venezuela does not have free elections, so aide is largely denied. Not to mention they won't accept the little bit they get. Argentina and Brazil would most certainly accept any aide.

by Anonymousreply 7May 24, 2018 12:40 AM

[quote] Why don't Venezuelans just go crazy trying to overthrow the government?

The Chávez government banned private gun ownership in 2012. Tough to fight a corrupted army plus the street-gang militarily armed party "militias".

Venezuela's government is a huge drug cartel that uses the Venezuelan armed forces for tactical support. The Venezuelan people have tried incessantly to overthrow the chavistas but stick and stones are no match against military weapons.

There is a major rightwing movement gaining power in Brazil, largely because of a skyrocketing Pentecostal and evangelical population. Even Carnival is being affected as many believe the scantily clothed throngs and hedonism are immoral and should be curtailed

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Rio’s evangelical mayor attended the ceremonial opening of this year’s Carnival on Friday after being sharply criticized for ducking out last year.

However, Mayor Marcelo Crivella did it in a way that many Carnival revelers will find strange.

Crivella was present for Friday’s handing of the city’s key to the Carnival king, but did not do it himself as previous mayors have done. Instead, he had a famous Rio family do it and then stepped away quickly.

Crivella is a bishop in Brazil’s powerful Universal Church of Kingdom of God and was elected mayor in 2016 with the help of the evangelical vote. Many evangelicals oppose Carnival.

Crivella has also cut about $1.5 million in funding for the famous samba school parades.

After the ceremonial opening on Friday, Crivella told journalists he doesn’t hold any prejudice against Carnival and called the bash “just a party.”

“This thing about me handing the key has become a religious dogma,” Crivella said. “The key was always handed to the Carnival king. Has that made education better? Healthcare? Is there anything very important in this?”

Revelers have criticized Rio’s mayor with their costumes, shirts and songs. Popular samba school Mangueira plans to feature a float depicting a butt with Crivella’s name on it.

Rio’s mayor said he accepts criticism and that Carnival is a paradoxical time for the city.

“We live with our hearts torn by violence, by inequality,” he said, adding that many poor communities “need so much.”

The mayor did not say whether he would go to the Sambadrome, where samba schools will parade and compete on Sunday and Monday while thousands watch. Earlier on Thursday he inspected the Sambadrome building and was accidentally showered with water from a hydrant.

by Anonymousreply 20May 24, 2018 10:34 AM

That shift can be attributed in large part to the increasing power, both cultural and political, of the evangelical church in Brazil. Today, nearly a quarter of Brazilians identify as evangelical, up from 5 per cent in 1970.

When it comes to the sinful extremity of Carnaval, some evangelical leaders encourage their followers to simply sit out the party. One of Brazil's most famous evangelical pastors, Silas Malafaia, warned on his website that "this festival of the flesh brings degrading physical, moral and spiritual consequences", adding: "It is therefore not appropriate for Christians to participate."

But some evangelicals know Carnaval can be impossible to avoid. So, like the social progressives, they are attempting to transform the festival into one they can endorse. In the city of Salvador, for example, a group called Salt of the Earth will parade to Brazilian funk tunes - one of Brazil's most salacious music genres - adapted to include lyrics referencing the Bible. Another group, called Christafari, will parade to gospel reggae music.

by Anonymousreply 30May 24, 2018 1:10 PM

Correct, R30.

[quote] One reason for the pressure on the lira is that the United States Federal Reserve has been raising interest rates and drawing international capital away from emerging markets like Turkey. It can be remedied if Turkey raises interest rates, analysts say.

But then, can't you say there's such a thing as French snobbery? Or English uptightness? What's wrong with saying Iberian incompetence?

by Anonymousreply 41May 24, 2018 2:16 PM

There's nothing wrong with it per se, but a casual glance towards Italy or Britain right now shows you that no one has a monopoly on incompetence; it's a universal gift that keeps on giving.

by Anonymousreply 42May 24, 2018 2:33 PM

Venezuela has the added complication of being a major oil exporter, it comprises the bulk of their economy and almost all their (legal) exports. Until recently it had extremely rich and productive agriculture and food exports but Chavista policies have largely brought farming to a halt (like Stalin and Mao’s collectivization schemes). That makes sense for the government since it then can monopolize food imports and distribution as a means of control. The chavistas have stolen billions of oil revenues while slowly starving the population into submission. At least the Gulf Oil sheikhs pamper their subjects to some degree - Islamic clergy and and aristocratic noblesse oblige serve as some check. With socialism you don’t even get that. And for the hysterical Bernie fraus who think “democratic socialism” is different - it’s not...as well one day find out. Oh, I’m a Democrat by the way before the Red Guards get riled up...

by Anonymousreply 47May 24, 2018 2:50 PM

[quote]Britain... I'm not sure what's wrong there.

Brexit negotiations; in that they are in shambles. Their prime minister is the very picture of incompetence.

Also, London doesn't need to be burning to recognize incompetence. One is a developed country and the other an emerging market. Some perspective, please.

by Anonymousreply 48May 24, 2018 3:41 PM

r44 Better invest in some casual news reading to broaden your glance, then.

by Anonymousreply 68July 16, 2018 9:44 PM

What a dump! Brazil should be vaporized if not at least sterilized. Has to be the lowest of lows beyond any nation on this earth. Mexico is a haven compared. If you don't believe me then you need to visit some gore sites. The sickest mutilations and murder that make ISIS look like boys scouts. Flip flop wearing genetic disasters. The prison gore is not to be believed. Children with limbs hacked off before they are beheaded. Nothing gore can really phase me at this time but the videos coming out of there since January, cause PTSD and I've had to close them down while shrieking. Animals. No selective breeding caused the latest generations of beneath pond scum nonhuman to ever walk the earth. Don't believe me? Then head your ass over to best gore. I warn you they are the main supplier to the most hardcore gore genre. Garbage coming out of Brazil used to only be available on the dark Web. Go to the above mentioned site and you will never view the human race the same again. It will change you forever.

Recently some Brazil judge charged Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte with some petty bullshit and the reaction was 'Are you fucking joking?' If anyone ever dares a boastful brag of hailing from there, your eyes will glaze over like a doughnut.

WARNING you, you take a trip to BG and you'd better brace yourself. Puke bag at the ready. Terror and trauma will stamp itself onto your eyeballs. A child's arms hacked off above the elbows while completely conscious. A prisoner attacked being forced to eat his own severed digits. The only lesson you will learn is that we share a planet and species with these cretins. You just can't get any lower than the population who inhabit Brazil. They are the bottom.

Most of the Latin countries are absolute shitholes full of crime and social ills. And they still don't get it that socialism doesn't work. The media will glorify places like Rio as fun places but you have to watch every move you make lest you get robbed or killed there. Some vacation.
