Actual, real marvelous and charming villages, cities and towns in the Midwest
The other thread referencing "Marvelous Midwestern towns" is a sly reference to the settings of various TV shows....but someone in that thread was VERY disappointed it was not a thread about actual charming towns in real life.
So here is THAT thread!
We could argue about where the true Midwest is, but for the purposes of this thread, let's set aside boundaries and consider these areas:
As far east as Western PA and NY. I'd think that the Mississippi is a good indicator of the Western boundary - either the river itself or no farther west than the western border of the state it runs through.
Can start as far

Three Oaks, Michigan is a charming village - only 1,800 people but it has a live theatre, an art movie theater, a distillery/restaurant complex,a butcher shop, a gourmet deli and many galleries and antique shops. A pretty amazing art/gay community for such a small town. And it's only an hour or so from downtown Chicago.

Galena Illinois. Not worth a separate visit but a surpassingly quaint city I used to drive through on way to Dubuque (not charming).

Is there a town like Middleton in "The Good Witch"? I want to live there.

Quite a few, OP, but after seeing the Californication of my home state of Texas by hordes of coastal hipsters, I'm adopting a policy of deterrence, dismissing everything between L.A. and New York as a Trump-voting, gun-toting, coal-rolling wishing-you-a-blessed-day cultural desert.

R6, it's obvious from R5's condescending tone, that he is one of those insufferable people from Austin.

R1 I'd say they were more in the Plains.

R3 Hoping to visit Galena sometime.
I want to go to Dubuque only because I hear there's a place along the river where you can see/watch otters.

Some nice countryside on way to Dubuque - but never found a decent hotel there. And complete lack of decent restaurant or bar scene. You can also divert into southern Wisconsin which is pretty countryside.

There are several charming small towns around Chicago. One of my favorites is Geneva. It's got some charming shops, a really wonderful bakery/dessert place, some nice restaurants, and a park near the river to walk along.

I am not from anywhere near Marfa, R5, or Austin either, though I have family in the metro area, including a sibling who works for DPS and will hopefully give R6 a ticket or have his car impounded.

Oldenburg, Indiana is a very small, very quaint little town. The street signs bilingual (German and English) and there were still a few cobblestone streets that last time I drove through.
