I don't remember anyone in the US making any fuss about this at all in comparison to the weddings of his brothers or of William and Harry. Did anyone here pay any attention to it back in 1999? Certainly Sophie herself got nowhere near the kind of media attention Diana, Fergie, Kate Middleton, or Meghan received. Yet I see little difference between Sophie and Fergie--they're both wives of sons of the monarch. Indeed, Sophie should have received more attention than Meghan, who is only the wife of the GRANDCHILD of the monarch.
Everyone was relieved he finally met the right girl, didn't want to pressure them for more.

They just wanted to marry the gay guy off with as little fanfare as possible.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 16, 2018 10:18 PM |
Yeah R1, everyone pretty much assumed that Edward was gay.
I think the marriage was just for show, to end the speculation about him.
Then he could go back to hooking up with guys, in secret.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 16, 2018 10:18 PM |
I was at lunch today and the bar area we were in had HLN and it was non-stop Harry and Meghan. Am I the only one who doesn’t give two shits about it?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 16, 2018 10:20 PM |
What's so special about these people that they're the rulers? All the guys are bald.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 16, 2018 10:20 PM |
They downplayed it. That's why he became an earl instead of a duke.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 16, 2018 10:21 PM |
R4 No. Some of us are sick of the whole thing. I'll look at the photos on the internet after the whole thing is over with.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 16, 2018 10:22 PM |
Everybody knew Edward was/is gay as a goose and was just bearding up. Plus he was the last of HM’s children to marry.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 16, 2018 10:22 PM |
The Royal Family was still clawing their way out of the bottom of the opinion polls after Diana’s death. I think the PR push at the time was about William, Harry and Charles.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 16, 2018 10:23 PM |
Sophie wasn't anywhere nearly as trashy or as foreign as Sparkle.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 16, 2018 10:24 PM |
Sophie was old and frau-ish and totally boring. Nobody paid her any attention.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 16, 2018 10:25 PM |
Sophie is the Queen's only daughter-in-law living or dead, that has enough class to be practical and low-key as she goes about her business. And Edward is not gay, but I realize this is data lounge, so ......
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 16, 2018 10:31 PM |
I think Edward preferred keeping it low key. Word was he asked to be made an Earl rather than a Duke. Seemed rather odd.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 16, 2018 10:31 PM |
R13, it is said the reason that was done is so he would be granted the title of Duke of Edinburgh once his father dies.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 16, 2018 10:34 PM |
Edward has always been the forgotten son. I always forget that he exists until one of these family occasions come up. He's like Richie Cunningham's older brother Chuck.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 16, 2018 10:35 PM |
There was that scandal with the journalist pretending to be a sheik who taped a meeting with her; I can't remember if she was selling access to the royal family or what.
HM was quite upset with Sophie because of this.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 16, 2018 10:36 PM |
Fergie tried to sell access, but I forget if that was with or without toe-sucking.
Since Megs' standards are even lower, one can only imagine what she'll offer for access to someone she thinks may know someone in the BRF.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 16, 2018 10:40 PM |
Nobody wanted to jinx it, OP. Edward always was SUCH a concern.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 16, 2018 10:42 PM |
Sophie was looking for business in the wrong places!
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 16, 2018 10:43 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 16, 2018 10:45 PM |
R20- Sophie busts her ass for the family. She become one of the Queens favorites.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 16, 2018 10:49 PM |
Boring, but this Saturday's wedding will be fun. We're having a party so we'll all be shit faced before they even make it to the aisle. Drunken drag queens in royal garb are always entertaining
But Edward and Sophie? Not the least bit entertaining.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 16, 2018 10:50 PM |
Sophie had, you know, an actual... job. Unlike the rest of the breeding sows that married into that parasite family.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 16, 2018 11:00 PM |
It wasn't a massive deal here in the UK either. The main thing I remember is that Sophie looked eerily like Jill Dando, the TV presenter who was murdered just a few weeks before Edward & Sophie's wedding. Here's Sophie standing in front of a photo of Jill:
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 16, 2018 11:01 PM |
And, R23, that right there lets Sparkle off of HM's daily agenda.
Megs is in it for herself and nobody else.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 16, 2018 11:02 PM |
Young Prince Edward was quite the looker back in the day - handsome face, beautiful lips, and a full head of attractive hair - when he was having all the gay hook-ups.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 17, 2018 4:23 AM |
I used to think he was quite lovely.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 17, 2018 4:28 AM |
The only ones who got it right. Maybe it is bearding - which is what makes it work so well. They know that marriage is just a business contract. Unlike the unpragmatic idiots who make up the rest of the Queens family.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 17, 2018 4:39 AM |
Even Prince Charles was handsome, for like 15 days. All the QEII's children and grandchildren were nice looking but it faded very fast.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 17, 2018 6:08 AM |
Sophie is 100% presentable and normal-looking without being the slightest bit attractive.
She would make a great news reader.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 17, 2018 6:27 AM |
Sophie and Edward got a carriage ride at Windsor, so Meghan and Harry probably thought they deserved the same. Wasn't it security for the carriage ride that sent the security bill skurocketing?

What I remember about Edward and Sophie’s wedding was that it was considered a relaxed wedding, and “Modern Royal Wedding” — E&S did not want a State Wedding, so no politicians, no military. The invites instructed guests to wear evening formal wear and requested “no hats” for ladies (tho QE-TQM of course wore one). Several thousand people got tickets to the Castle Grounds for the wedding, and Edward, Charles, and Andrew walked from the Castle to the church thru the crowds. It was very different from any previous Royal Wedding and was received well by the public and in the media.
The issue with Edward being created an Earl rather than a Royal Duke as his brothers were, it was understood and agreed per Philip’s own wishes that upon his death, the Dukedom of Edinburgh, after reverting to the sovereign, would be bestowed on Edward and his line. As such, his son James would inherit the title (but not the HRH) from Edward, and so on thru the generations.
I know it’s been rumoured for years Edward was/is gay. I don’t know - of course he could be, he just as easily could have just experimented, and of course he could be perfectly straight. I think he’s straight personally. Now Andrew on the other hand, I’ve heard he’s never been picky about who he sleeps with - as they say, his tastes run to both snails and oysters.
S&E are very close with QEII & DoE - they speak daily; Sophie and/or her daughter regularly go riding with the Queen; Edward was the first and almost only one to visit Philip in hospital. It’s also been reported that theirs is the only house that the Queen will just “drop in on” when the mood strikes. The Queen and Sophie also share similar tastes in movies and TV shows, so the Queen often has them over on random nights when all are free for dinner on trays and a movie or some binge watching and a chinwag about the movie or show.
After Sophie’s early, and singular misstep when she still had her own PR Firm, she’s been a workhorse for Queen and Country without a whiff of scandal - all of which goes a long way with the British public.

R50: Indeed you do not. Sophie is also the sister-in-law of a future King. I know everyone wants William to get up there toot sweet, but Charles gets a go first. Though if Betty is anything like her mother The Queen Mother Dowager Empress, she's got a good 9 years to go...

by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 17, 2018 10:36 PM |
The heightened US interest in this wedding is completely understandable. An American is joining the royal family and in 48 hours or so will be an HRH. Add the bi-racial element and it becomes a bit historic. Even Brits of African heritage are reportedly thrilled that Harry is tying the knot with someone "like them". This a far cry from a horsey, but hard working Brit commoner marrying into the family.

Prince Harry will be 33 when he marries, and Meghan is 36.

Sophie is the poor man's Diana.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 18, 2018 12:46 AM |
R41 and R43 - brill! Meet you both back here later! Decide on a topic and we’ll proceed!
R53 - that was funny! But apparently they both like the Brit detective/mystery shows. Not the “all solved in one episode” types like “Midsomer”, but the serial ones like “Shetland” and “The Tunnel” - go figure! However, you bring up an interesting point - what do the in-laws call QEII? Philip? What does Kate call (what will Meghan call) them and Charles and Camilla?
by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 18, 2018 2:46 AM |
Sophie, like the Queen, is fascinated by military history and they have been known to spend hours together going through HM's extensive library of rare books and documents on the subject. The British press often makes note that Sophie seems to be HM's favorite of all her daughters- and granddaughters-in-law, past and present.
HM no longer rides horses. When the weather allows, she still tries to take short daily rides on one of her Shetland ponies, accompanied by one or more security officers on horseback.

Sophie has been a good example of marrying The Firm. Not as severe as Anne, yet an admirable sense of duty, decorum, and gravitas.
And then to picture the janky skank Megs trying to get in the fold... yuck. She offers less than nothing.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 19, 2018 9:41 AM |
Because r65 neither is of blood royal, but a duchess outranks a countess. As the child of the current reigning sovereign Dockside Doris outranks Harry, so when they're with their husbands Sophie wins. Once Liz kicks the bucket, Meg Sussex will have the upper hand all of the time.
