Which is better: The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm or The Brothers Grimm?

Tonight on TCM is The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962)which stars Laurence Harvey and Karlheinz Böhm (son of renowned conductor Karl Böhm) as the brothers with Claire Bloom, DL fave Barbara Eden (I Dream of Jeannie), Jim Backus (Thurston Howell III on Gilligan's Island), Yvette Mimieux (once married to director Stanley Donen), comedian Buddy Hackett, Terry Thomas, Martita Hunt (Miss Havisham), Mel Blanc (voice of course) and Russ Tamblyn (of Twin Peaks and father of Amber Tamblyn). It was directed by Henry Levin (Where the Boys Are and Journey to the Center of the Earth).

The Brothers Grimm (2005), directed by Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame, stars DL faves Heath Ledger and Matt Damon as the brothers and also features Peter Stormare, Lena Headey, Jonathan Pryce and Monica Bellucci, from the Matrix films.

Neither were quite box offices successes. Take my pole please, and tell us which you prefer and why.

TWWOTBG, because it was shot in three-camera Cinerama.

by Anonymousreply 1May 15, 2018 3:56 PM

Plus, it had stop-motion animation instead of cruddy CGI...

The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm also features Walter Slezak father of actress Erika Slezak who starred in a soap opera called One Life to Live that aired back in the 70s apparently.

by Anonymousreply 3May 15, 2018 4:42 PM

Walter's father was Leo Slezak, one the most famous of all Wagnerian heldentenors. Once at the Met, he sang Lohingrin's Farewell and turned to step onto the swanboat that was to bear him away. But the boat had already left and was halfway across the stage without him. Slezak turned to a chorister and said "What time's the next swan?"

by Anonymousreply 4May 15, 2018 5:00 PM

^ Lohengrin, not Lohingrin.

by Anonymousreply 5May 15, 2018 5:01 PM

Laurence Harvey looks as uneasy with these dwarves or gnomes as he did with all other people.

"The Brothers Grimm" is a mess, as are most Terry Gilliam films. But it gets better towards the end and starts to get involving once the Evil Queen (Monica Bellucci) appears, and things get all fairy tale.

I believe it was a huge flop at the box office, as are most Terry Gilliam films.

Damon’s ass in leggings in The Brothers Grimm. Reason enough to vote for it.

Heath Ledger did consider the Gilliam film to be the highlight of his career, for what it's worth.

by Anonymousreply 9May 15, 2018 9:28 PM

Seriously, R9? Why?

by Anonymousreply 10May 15, 2018 9:29 PM

From a Ledger interview in 2005 -LEDGER: I am such a huge fan of his work. I grew up watching Monty Python and wanting to be in Monty Python so therefore I was very familiar with his sense of humor and style of comedy. Being aware of that, I wanted to bring that sensibility to my character and to the film because I so desperately to be in one of those films as a kid so I would do anything I could, to present that in my character. People are quick to label him as mad or visually insane. I truly strongly believe that he is sane, just brutally honest. That is rare in Hollywood or today's society to find someone that honest. Where people get confused is that he has so much passion and energy in creating and in his visual eye. It is an absolute treat to be in his film.

Ledger and Michelle Williams were out promoting Brokeback which was released that same year, and he went on at length about how much he loved Gilliam and how much it meant to him to be a Gilliam film. Michelle had to remind him that he met and fell in love with her on Brokeback...

Where is the We Bought a Zoo option in the poll?

by Anonymousreply 13May 15, 2018 10:14 PM

I enjoyed the Gilliam Grimm, even though his things are uneven, he has a sense of fantasy and invention that appeals to me. One I enjoyed very mucy was the Munchausen movie.

I’m glad Ledger enjoyed his experience on this film. His role and performance were much better than those of a film for which he was lauded.

by Anonymousreply 15May 15, 2018 10:31 PM

Yes, "The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen" is a wonderful movie, strange and fun and unique. It was of course a financial disaster on release, like all Gilliam's films, but it really deserved a better fate.

"Grimm" is in the same sort of vein but not as good, but it's better than its reputation. Check it out, if you like Gilliam films.

by Anonymousreply 16May 15, 2018 10:33 PM

Gilliam's film is certainly not for lovers of kittens...

I think Grimm's Jacob may have been the first time Ledger was ever allowed to go Full Eccentric, with all kind of tics and mannerisms. He may have cherished it just for that.

by Anonymousreply 17May 15, 2018 11:04 PM

Heath Ledger's quite visible cock bulge bounces around in his longjohns scenes. His pants are quite bulgy, too.

Ya can't get that from the Cinerama original film.

by Anonymousreply 18May 15, 2018 11:43 PM

Gilliam's film is highly entertaining and the premise, that the Brothers are essentially fraud ghostbusters, feels almost endearingly anachronistic. It definitely picks up about two-thirds of the way through, but the ending is satisfying. When I watched it, I thought the roles were an odd fit for Ledger and Damon. I kept wondering if they had decided to switch parts for kicks between rehearsal and the first day of shooting.

R18, are you a sizemologist?

by Anonymousreply 20May 16, 2018 12:11 AM

No, a bulgeologist. PhD.

But trained gymnast/acrobat Russ Tamblyn! What's not to adore! Has no one seen Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, West Side Story and Tom Thumb?!

by Anonymousreply 22May 16, 2018 1:37 AM

He was adorable.

But did he show this kind of bulge?

A google search for "Russ Tamblyn Bulge" brought up this amazing image from the animator of Tom Thumb. This was evidently a puppet of Russ Tamblyn used in long shots.

But the first search result for "Russ Tamblyn bulge" is for some reason this shot of Olympic medalist Buster Crabbe with a hot bear daddy in the background.

I recall reading something about how their characters were against type at the time, but I don't recall if it was intentional. I'll try to find the source for that.

by Anonymousreply 27May 16, 2018 2:26 AM

[quote] Damon and Ledger were originally cast in opposite roles before they petitioned to have their characters switched. Damon had wanted to work with Gilliam for years and actively campaigned to land the role of Will Grimm. The actor "grew up loving [Gilliam's] Time Bandits, the way that movie created this weird but totally convincing world". Gilliam elected to have Damon wear a prosthetic nose, but Weinstein said "it would have distracted audiences from Damon's star-studded good looks". Gilliam later reasoned that "it would have been the most expensive nose job ever".

R28, that seems familiar, now that you mention it. I must have read it at the time.
