by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 13, 2018 12:21 AM |
r8 it's not if you stay off property. I got a Hilton Amex which gets me diamond status and we stay that Hilton(s) next to Disney Springs. We get the annual passes because the amount we go it works out to less than 50 dollars per park visit, and that does not include the free parking (22 dollars a day) the discounts on shopping and restaurants. I other credit card gets me the presidential club in Avis so I pay for a mid size and get a two car upgrade. Last time I got a mercedes suv. - so really the most expensive thing is the flight - which we spring for first class since it is not that expensive of an upgrade from coach. All in per trip it is not much more than 1500 for two people per trip. Some pro tips - Never buy merch in the park. There are two Disney Outlets in orlando that stock enough shirts, toys, pins, etc at a huge discont. It's real disney merch too so the people back home would never know. Eating at Disney is expensive. For a family the Dining plan is usually a better option as long as you take advantage of it. If you don't want to do the park from sun up to sun down - get their early and plan on eating outside Disney. Dinner for 4 in park can run 200 dollars easy. Outside - a lot less. Use the Fast pass + system. If you are staying on property or at a good neighbor hotel you can book your fast passes 60 days in advance. Frozen, 7 Dwarves Mine Ride, Fligths of Passage, Snow White - these are rides that have 2-3 hour waits at peak times. Book fast passes for them. One trick - Frozen in Epcot - (the old Norway ride) if you cannot book a fast pass. Get to Epcot when the front opens. the world show case opens later but..Frozen opens when the front opens so if you get thier early you can ride Frozen about 3-4 times in a row before the crowd.

I have several friends who work at Disneyland, so I used to go a few times per year. I would stay across the street on Harbor Blvd. and use the park as sort of a home base. I would wander through and watch the people, maybe do a ride or two, and generally kill time before meeting my friends. I wouldn't call myself a Disney fanatic, but I do admire the operation--the thing is a well oiled machine, and the fact that the basic design still works as well as it does after 60 years is a marvel.
I've skipped it for the last year, because every time I go to one of the Disney websites the photos of the crowds are alarming. Even on a slow Tuesday the park looks packed to capacity. I can't imagine what this summer will be like when the real crowds hit.

As a brutal realist and pragmatist who spends too much time in my head, it’s totally not my thing and I can’t stand being there. But understand that people who like it are just wired completely differently than me. Enjoy if that’s your thing.

A guy I once worked with fell hard for a stripper in Vegas. She was half Japanese and half Navajo and absolutely beautiful the way he tells it. She told him she was from LA and only worked Vegas during the big conventions. Anyway, she got him for several hundred in lap dances in the VIP lounge and he thought she was worth every penny.
Two weeks later he's at Disneyland with his wife and kiddies having Mickey's Big Buffet Breakfast and in she walks dressed as Pocahontas.

I’m not much of a Disney fan generally, but I’m a huge Disneyland. Before going to the parks for the first time in my thirties, I considered Disney retrograde, kitschy, and a lowest common denominator sort of entertainment. I still kind of think so, but everything changes when I enter the parks. My cynicism disappears, my anxiety subsides, and I’m happy. I can't explain or justify it. I’m generally a melancholy, overly critical sort of person, and getting worse as I get older. The simple happiness I find at Disneyland is magic, or as close to magic as my world has to offer.
We’re in LA and have the signature plus passes so we can go to the Anaheim park anytime, and we're renewing to the premiere next year so we can go to both Orlando and Anaheim next year. We’re alternating between overseas vacations and Orlando as frequently as we can.
And to whoever equated Disney to religion, I’ve been know to call our monthly annual pass charges my monthly tithing. It’s expensive but a small price to pay for the pleasure we get from it.

I love some of the Disney films, enough that I'm embarrassed to admit it to other adults. In fact I'm feeling unwell today, and just watched "Beauty and the Beast" and "Frozen" while I'm home.
But I have absolutely no interest in the memorabilia or toys, and haven't liked Disneyland since I hit puberty. I went when I was in my forties, and it seemed borderline hellish, with all the crowds and expense. Never go there sober, once you hit the age of reason!

Former Disney World CP here. I've visited a handful of times since completing the program 10 plus years ago for old times' sake, but to also see what's new (Magic Kingdom expansion, etc). Would avoid visiting in the spring/summer, much too crowded and hot. In the fall, you can check out Epcot's Food & Wine Festival and the Magic Kingdom's Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. This is a special ticketed event, but it is slightly cheaper than a regular MK ticket. If you can go on a school night the park is most likely at a third of capacity, making it very easy to avoid lines and do everything you want to do (and in costume, if you're into that).
In two weeks I'll be vacationing in France and have already purchased my one day mini pass to Euro Disney. I think I'm solely going to take pics of the french version of my former location to send to old coworkers for a laugh! Can't wait.

R47, I do buy one every year. I started with the cheapest AP 5 years ago and have upgraded each year since. I now have the top tier AP and pay $82.42 per month (nothing down, since it was a renewal.upgrade). This includes free parking, free MaxPass, a bonus month, and higher discounts on food and merchandise.
I find the park very relaxing, even when it is super crowded - which is often. I also go for a full week preceding/during Gay Days as one of my two vacations each year.
I personally find it to be a good value.

They're building a third one in Tokyo because the parks are so popular there. DIsneySky.

If fewer people would go to Disney World, it would bring down the prices for everyone. Disney made a billion dollars on parks and resorts last year. They could afford to cut prices quite a bit if demand would shrink.

It's Disney's idea of a "good deal" and the fraus with kids eat it up.
If you really examine any "deal" through Disney, you'll see it's beneficial only to those who frequent the park like it's a shrine.
For those who visit once in a blue moon, sticking with paying for everything as you arrive is much more economical and practical.

A Disney adult ticket is $120. Paying $82 every month doesn’t even make sense. Why not just buy the tickets each time you go? Say you go 6 times a year. That’s only $720 if you just buy the tickets versus $984 for a yearly plan.

r59, I go a MINIMUM of 20 days per year, including a five day stay during Gay Days, I pay $984 total for a 13 month period. Buying the tickets separately would be $2600. Not including parking (about $300) and MaxPass ($200). I'm saving $2100.
So, yeah, I think it's a good deal.

I went to Paris with my family when I was 12 - the last day was reserved for Disneyland. Me and my parents were the only three people from our large tour group who skipped it, because I told my parents that I would like to see the stained-glass windows of Saint-Chapelle instead. I guess I had lots of class even as a small kid, unlike most other posters here.
I happen to admire some of Disney's older animated films, but everything else about their empire is tacky as hell. And the way they killed public domain as we knew it (with some help from the cunts in the US Congress) was just tragic.

LOL- the four season is cheaper than the most expensive Disney hotels. We stay at the Hilton next to Disney Springs. I get Diamond status with my Amex card so we get a free two room upgrade - usually a suite on the executive floor. Free parking, free "high speed" wifi (the better wifi speed) and breakfast and cocktail receptions in the evening. We literally only eat dinner due to all the perks. In addition to that the card pays 250 dollars in resort costs - including room service. It is actually nice not to have to go out to restaurants every night.
Holy shit on the Maxx Pass - that must be new. Disneyworld does not charge for the fastpass + system.

OMG! I love some of the posters on here so much. My finger is sore from pressing the W&W button. I KNEW there would be a few turds around to knock them, but they're HAPPY PEOPLE and they bounce right back.
I went to WDW back in the early 70s when it was NEW. I came all the way from London, England and in those days English kids didn't go to Florida and people would literally LAUGH IN OUR FACES, when they heard our accents.... especially black gurls for some reason.
Back then the ride everyone told you to go on was Pirates Of The Caribbean - but it was broken down when we were there. So, I've still never been on it. My fave was the Peter Pan Ride over London and the haunted house of course.
We stayed in The Polynesian Village which was very nice and there was a soda dispenser in the hallway that sold Frosty The Snowman Root Beer, which we all became addicted to.
I went back in about 2002 and thought it was pretty horrible and crowded - but reading this thread I'm re-thinking it.
Before we went my father gave me a copy of this "souvenir" booklet and I looked at it for months before we got there.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | May 19, 2018 1:48 AM |
I went to WDW in the 70’s too! It was so unique and exciting! The haunted house was the most memorable. I haven’t been since so I still think of it like it was back then. It wasn’t overcrowded as we went in October of 73 or 74. A different world for sure.

The Contemporary is pretty damn expensive at 900+ per night (just because it is down the street from the Magic Kingdom, breakfast with Mickey and the monorail running through it). I was completely underwhelmed. The place looked like a Holiday Inn inside. I prefer the Art of Animation a lot more and it is much cheaper with fast pass included. Live and learn.

We are going to WDW next year and staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge, but not in a room with a savannah view. I like that we’ll be able to walk out and see giraffes. They also have nighttime safaris.
I really wanted to take a day out of the park to see the Weeki Wachi mermaids, but they’re too far away, sadly. My dad gave me his old Viewmaster from the ‘50s and one of the reels was of Weeki Wachi. It was VERY glamorous and exotic to me ten year old self.

My partner works at a top theme park. Picked him up on his day off via grindr. All the staff live within a couple of miles of the resort and you can spot them online as they have the faceless profiles. Bought the annual pass to go visit him between shows. Got to know all the regular park fans (mostly teen fags and hags, plus parent types using kids as a prop). Learnt all the short cuts to get round the park, and timings, to avoid the heaving masses. Learnt how to negotiate the car park to cut the walk in by 10 minutes. Take a cold beer in a small rucksack with a saved branded plastic glass so I can sit in the sun waiting for the parade. It’s the best part because many of the characters recognize me from the off-park social events / parties and give me a special mini performance as they pass - much to the annoyance of the regular paying punters around me. Not as many characters are gay as you would expect, but still a good few. Fun to recognize them (out of costume!) on the nudist beach too.

I believe, Disney is one of the first companies to offer same-sex partner benefits. A corporation that has an acutal GAY DAY(s) at their parks and I have seen gay families at the park being treated just like straight families long before gay marriage was legal in the US.

I went to Disneyland once and regret not planning my rides and researching the actual format in advance. We wandered around listlessly, eating giant pickles, drinking lemonade and queuing. The crowds were very overwhelming. I wonder if the sheer size of WDW might make it less packed.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | June 3, 2018 8:23 AM |
WDW is a toilet, filled with southern trash. At least at Disneyland, you are near civilization and see celebs galore. Just look for cast members in plaid- they escort the VIPs around.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | June 3, 2018 8:46 AM |
r122 Disneyland is always always crowded. Just due to it's size and the fact a lot of Californians just go there. God forbid you go on a busy day. It routinely hits capacity ride waits can be hours long. We went during gay days and made reservations for lunch and dinner. Both times we were told they overbooked and we would have to wait an hour and a half for our reservation.

R123, that's never happened to me and I occasionally go to the Blue Bayou. The better restaurants are in Downtown Disney or the hotels anyway- Catal, Steakhouse 55 and you can drink.

by Anonymous | reply 126 | June 3, 2018 5:03 PM |
I went to Magic Kingdom in the 90s during the peak of the Disney Renaissance and it was wonderful. I would like to go again but I fear it would be a disappointment. I assume the parks now favor the more recent films and characters? I doubt I would see any Hunchback of Notre Dame stuff, or DuckTales and Darkwing Duck...
It is nice to hear that the warm fuzzy feeling I experienced 20 years ago is still conjured up when you all visit the park. I would hate to return and see the whole thing as a crass money-making merchandising enterprise.
But it also depends heavily on the company you keep. I wouldn't want to go to the park with just anybody. Part of the magic of the place is building memories with people you really care about.
And yes I realize how completely cheesy that sounds.

Don't they treat/pay their employees hardly any better than Wal-Mart?
I'm not really a fan of a lot of the animated films. I really like the vintage Disney cartoon shorts especially the Mickey Mouse ones (and I love the Mickey Mouse series that came out in 2013). I actually prefer Mickey and Minnie's original character designs from the late 20's-mid 30's. The only Disney stuff I own are a dozen Disney Princess dolls I got from Wal-Mart, a Mickey Mouse hooded sweatshirt from Avon and Mickey and Minnie Mouse dolls from the Bradford Exchange.
It's very annoying whenever they endlessly re-release their classic animated films on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Downtown Disney restaurants never require park access, on weekends or any other time. Neither do the hotels. You are talking out your ass.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | June 4, 2018 7:10 AM |
Animal Kingdom is about as non-exploitive as an animal can get outside of running wild in the jungles of Africa. There are no show or trained lions or tigers and the like. Just lovely animals doing whatever they please wherever they please on a huge beautifully landscaped and wild non-landscaped savannas. I love the idea of sitting out on your balcony and watching the animals feed and graze. It's almost like being on safari, without the airfare and long flight. The cost for the prime animal gazing rooms is probably n a par with the Mt Kenya Safari Club though. They are very in demand too.
All in all the Grand Floridian is and has always been my favorite on property hotel. I was given a very nice suite for a week in the GF and I was allowed to bring a friend during the first year it was open. Even though we had passes for all the parks, I didn't want to leave the luxury of the GF. But my friend did, so we compromised. I don't know if it is still good, but Victoria and Albert's at the GF was quite the experience for dinner. You will see no children or characters there.

R140 Okay, that is pretty damn funny, and I can see why you would post that photo. I did not mean to come across as grand or entitled, but I see that I did. I was grateful as hell to have been given the suite and the passes. It was perhaps the nicest perk I received while doing my job as a flight attendant in my 30 year career. And there was no quid pro quo attached to the offer either. When we arrived and saw our beautiful room filled with flowers, fruit and champagne, my girlfriend said, "oh god Chris, what in the fuck have you gotten us into? Is -----going to be ringing the doorbell ready for his BJ any minute now?
He wasn't even on the property, and he never asked for a thing in return. He simply was doing something spectacularly generous for his "favorite stew" who had taken care of him on his many LAX-ATL flights over the year before the GF opened.
But if I am to be completely truthful...that first class vacation would have been well worth the giving of a bj.

I love Disneyland and Disney World. Where do I start? I've been to Gay Days at both. The Disney World one is the best because they have an all night party at Typhoon Lagoon (one of the two Disney water parks in Orlando). It's a beautiful party with real rainbows usually. If you hate the Disney parks, it's because you haven't gone with me. I can size you up and impress you. There's just about everything for anyone. My husband doesn't like crowds or Disney but even he admits World of Color and Soarin Over California are amazing experiences you can't get anywhere else. I also think anyone would enjoy the drawing class at the Animation Station at Disney's California Adventure. They also used to have a thing where you could voice the characters in a Disney movie and then they'd play it back for you. Very cool. It was closed last time I was there though. It is also hard to not be floored by It's a Small World at Christmas time at Disneyland. The thing is covered in Christmas lights. Fucking beautiful. I try to go see it once a year. In 2012, they did something really cool at Disneyland. They opened for a full 24 hours for leap day on February 29th. The thing was jam packed but still really fun. You've never been at Disneyland til you've been at Disneyland at 3 in the morning. Daisy, Mickey, Minnie, and Donald made appearances in their pajamas and bathrobes. It was a cute touch. I've never done Disney Cruise though I worked for them for three weeks and quit (that's another story) before we set sail. What I'm looking forward to now is the 2019 Disney World Marathon in January. I ran the NYC Marathon in 2015 & 2016 but haven't run at all since. I'm going to start training for the Disney one soon. Oh boy! The marathon runs through all of the Disney Parks in Orlando which is daunting if you understand how spread out the parks are.

Enjoy 3 hours of parking when you make a $20 minimum purchase and receive validation from any Downtown Disney location (including quick-service restaurants, merchandise locations and kiosks)—or up to 5 hours of parking with validation from any Downtown Disney table-service restaurant or AMC Theatres movie experience.
It is crowded on the weekends, less so on the weekdays unless there is a specific event like exclusive releases or Disney artist events at Art of Disney. Things like Star Wars weekend or the month and a half long high school senior event(s) for the area high schools can make it and insane crowd.

Why does the Mitsukoshi department store in the Japan Pavilion have almost all women working there? Is it a Japanese cultural thing? I saw one guy there for the first time ever.
Why does the Morocco Pavilion have only Jasmine and no Aladdin? I don’t care about her. I think because it’s in Morocco, Disney would feel obligated to have an Arab cast as Aladdin, and that would jar American guests. In the Magic Kingdom, they can slap a black wig on anyone and he’s Aladdin.
Rain and lightning washed out today’s Hoedown Happening at Frontierland. Sad! That’s my favorite thing. I like the Main Street Trolley Show too, even though they just lip synch while they dance.

If you went to Disneyworld anytime from the 70s to the 90s and haven't been back but are thinking of returning think again.
It is such a humungous cash grab it's horrible and the crowds are a nightmare. Everything has to be planned months in advance including the fucking rides through fastpass unless you want to stand in line 2 hours for a 2 minute ride.
I loved it back way back when but will probably not be returning.
Disney himself was brilliant in that he knew how to give you value for your money but now they don't give a fuck. More space has been taken over in the Magic Kingdom for merchandising stores and overpriced restaurants with mediocre food. I also think the cap was much lower on the number of people they let into it. And the miserable shits got rid of Mr. Toad!
But if you insist on going and giving your wallet to Bob Iger the Wilderness Lodge is wonderful and the obscenely expensive Victoria and Albert restaurant is worth doing once in your life.
And Boma in the Animal Kingdom Lodge is terrific for a buffet.

[quote]For those who've had the pleasure of fucking with a cast member: How do you know? What kind of signs or action to look for?
If you really want to pick up a cast member go to the Anaheim Garden Walk about 4:30 (It's across from the cast member parking lot on Disney Way just east of Harbor). Second floor, first bar you come to on the left. It used to be crawling with cast member craving alcohol. It was a big hangout for the characters (look for a bunch of really short women hanging around with a bunch of tall guys).

Yes. It is essentially a “re-skinning” (as they say) of what was already there, with some minor changes. It’s a pretty shameful, lazy move actually. But people reason the all the money going into Star Wars Land, which is huge and completely new.
by Anonymous | reply 236 | July 28, 2018 8:53 PM |
Disney fucked up big time with DCA- thanks Michael Eisner. The concept was stupid to begin with. Let's do a themed CA park in CA? It wasn't until Cars Land went in that people even wanted to go over to that park. Everything was ill-thought and cheap. Now it's nothing but a hodge-podge.
Starting next summer, I believe all pass levels (maybe not the most expensive) will only be good at one of the parks a day. So you may get stuck at DCA and not get Disneyland. The only saving grace is that they serve alcohol.
Once Star Wars Land opens, the crowds and parking will be unbearable and it's bad now.

Disney was going to open “Disney America,” a colonial-themed park in Virginia, when I was young. I was so pissed off. Everything in the DC area and in Virginia is about fucking Thomas Jefferson and George Washington sleeping around. I’m glad it fell through.

The character actor princes are GAY, but they fuck each other.
[quote] As one princess put it, "We weren't finding romance at work." With the fact that there is a prince for every princess, along with some other male face characters, the ratio is pretty even for male and female employees. Even so, there wasn't much of a chance for the princesses to find their own prince while employed at Disney because most of those princes were looking for their own prince.
[quote] For the ladies who are into men, working at the park must have been kind of rough romantically because there weren't that many options. Sure, you could always go outside of the park to find a boo, but from the sound of it, there seems to be a kind of "bubble" for Disney employees and they don't really go outside of the park all that much while they're employed there. It makes sense, though, being a Disney face character isn't really a job as it is a lifestyle. For those guys, though, they must have had a great time romantically while working there.

by Anonymous | reply 314 | August 21, 2018 1:19 PM |
I really like Disney World, except for the animal abuse/captivity, the roadkill (on their internal road network), and the habitat destruction of the massive developments (always growing). But I'd rather have it exist than almost any other development on land (sprawl housing all over the country, ugly malls, etc.).
It's so overcrowded, however, so I'd love it if they built a new water park (to compete with Universal's new water park), and a fifth theme park.
They have a Mickey-shaped solar farm, and they're building a gigantic 500,000-panel solar farm that will supply enough electricity to power two of the parks. Impressive.

[quote]It's so overcrowded, however, so I'd love it if they built a new water park (to compete with Universal's new water park), and a fifth theme park.
I'm honestly surprised they didn't create a new park for Marvel and Star Wars instead of adding onto the existing parks. Although I guess it was cheaper since complete identity redoes of Epcot and Hollywood Studios are coming sooner or later.
It's just a matter of time until they buy out that Islands of Adventure contract.
by Anonymous | reply 316 | August 21, 2018 1:47 PM |
R316, I think Star Wars will really help Disney's Hollywood Studios park A LOT. It might become bigger than Epcot after Galaxy's Edge opens.
I think if Marvel and SW prove dramatically powerful/popular, they'll seriously look at opening an action-oriented adult-focused park. Maybe institutional investors will start bringing it up in conference calls, since the parks are hugely important to earnings.
The houses at the WDW gated development, Golden Oak, are so terribly ugly. They should have gotten famous architects to design them.

I think we'll see new parks at existing locations or a new global location once Iger leaves. The new CEO will want to make his/her mark. Iger's big thing was opening Shanghai, his big mark on the parks. He's not leaving anytime soon, however, but his replacement might be the current theme parks VP.
I'm thinking a non-kingdom park in South Korea, since it's become big with the Chinese and to some extent the Japanese b/c of TV and music), of limited size to start (as they did in Hong Kong, starting small and now expanding with new lands and a second park pending).
by Anonymous | reply 319 | August 21, 2018 2:03 PM |
R318, it's homes, an (ugly) clubhouse (I think with its own residents-only restaurant), and special privileges at the (ugly) Four Seasons hotel nearby (spa access, etc.).
Despite the ugliness of much of the development, if they added an Equinox nearby, that'd cinch it for me - like someone said before.

Can Asia really take a fifth park? Hong Kong Disneyland has really struggled, and has lost money for the last three years. And there's not really much park in Shanghai just yet.
I do give them a lot of credit for being sensitive to cultural differences.
by Anonymous | reply 321 | August 21, 2018 2:18 PM |
R321, those three countries - China, S. Korea, and Japan - are rabid about theme parks. More than any other region in the world. Absolutely crazy about them - and they buy tons of souvenirs.
They're absolutely obsessed - in particular, their younger women. Japanese women collect plush Duffy dolls (Tokyo Disneyland's own most-popular character) and other plush dolls in the hundreds (new iterations coming out every month, announced in advance online, available only in Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea) and they BRING them to the park to "experience" it with them, lining them up in front of them when watching parades, etc.
It's kind of religious for some of them. I've never seen or heard of such mass obsession elsewhere. Certainly not in the EU lol, where it's deemed vulgar.
by Anonymous | reply 322 | August 21, 2018 2:33 PM |
R321, Hong Kong was an exercise/pilot of their "start small" strategy, and they're spending billions to essentially double its size in the next few years - and there'll be a CRAZY new castle. A second park is in the works (they committed to it when negotiating with the HK government, as they did in France ages ago).
As long as a new park in East Asia isn't another kingdom park - if it's unique among the Asia parks - they'll go back and forth to see it. Korean go to Japan and China for the other parks, the Japanese go to HK, the Chinese go to Japan for Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea, etc. It's a constant flow.
by Anonymous | reply 323 | August 21, 2018 2:38 PM |
I don't like Disney's apparent "be happy all the time" message, but I do like its message (as I perceive it) of being kind and "good."
When I think of how a Disney protagonist would behave, it calms me down (in that the alternatives are less tempting) and helps me do the right thing, regardless of how difficult or (at least) uncomfortable it might be.
E.g., maybe picking up some litter that's right in front of me, regardless of what other people might think. Or ... trying to find love instead of looking to just get off with random guys. Or ... getting out of a Lyft to help an animal.
It makes me feel kind of idealistic and free to be myself - like the nice things children are capable of (though they're usually cruel). The nasty voices in my head, criticizing me for not keeping my head down instead of extending myself to help others or do something good - those voices are quieted when I think of Rapunzel's sweet face, or Mulan's bravery, or little Pua the pig in Moana.
It says that it's ok to be sweet and kind, not "hard" all the time, even if you're a guy and live in the modern "real" world where everyone's on Grindr looking to nut etc. You don't have to be cool all the time, or sophisticated, or "in the know." You can embarrass yourself to do what you know (or what your heart tells you) is right.
Also, it gives me hope when things don't look very good - when I'm inclined to despair.

[quote]I don't like Disney's apparent "be happy all the time" message, but I do like its message (as I perceive it) of being kind and "good."
You could equally make the argument that their message is "CONSUME!"
On the other hand, they take animal conservation at Animal Kingdom very seriously, just announced a ban on plastic straws, have every single hotel at WDW certified to environmental standards, and are using that solar plant as part of a plan to halve their carbon footprint by 2020.
In other words, they can be a mass of contradictions. It's crass capitalism, but it's at least genial crass capitalism.

And, at the risk of opening up a trans-related can of worms, I adore that they let boys get Disney Princess makeovers if they want to. Who didn't want to wear Belle's ballgown while dialing the phone with a pencil in front of the magazines attractively fanned out on the coffee table?

Their blue sky concept art doesn't always translate directly into reality. Disney usually gets pretty close, but I'd be surprised if the castle was actually that tall, for example.
I do really wish they'd export Mystic Manor, although since it would likely come at the expense of the Haunted Mansion, maybe not.

I wish they would have made the kind of investments into WDW and Disneyland/DCA that they've done into the Asian parks. I know the money for Tokyo comes from Oriental Land Company, but you look at DisneySea and you look at DCA, which opened in the same year, and DCA was just such...shit. It's certainly better, and I know they pumped some money in a few years ago, but what's really changed? Most of what they've done, aside from Cars Land, is just a new coat of paint on the old park.
I'm glad Universal and Harry Potter forced them to invest in Pandora and Galaxy's Edge, but from the videos I've seen of Toy Story Land at Hollywood Studios, I'm surprised how sparse it seems.

I believe Disney was one of the first major corporations to offer same-sex benefits. When my ex worked at the studio ( this was the late 80s), I was always invited to business dinners and treated the same as any other spouse. Ditto for parties, premieres, etc.
At some point, an Xtian group called for a boycott and the excutives laughed it off. You can't keep kids from Disney.

Several times, the park has been shut down to additional guests and one African American patron said on the news "they closed because there are just too many black people inside".

I've never been clear on Magic Mountain - whether it's a Six Flag park or whatever. I heard of it fleetingly and never bothered to look it up.

Magic Mountain is also just cheaper to go to as well. $20, $30, $40 a ticket adds up, especially if you have a family.

Ok, Gays.
My husband has never been to Disney World, and I get the general impression that he'd sooner dig his eyes out with a spoon than visit of his own free will. However, he owes me a vacation there, and to that end, we're taking a cruise this winter that includes a stop in Port Canaveral which will function as a trial run. If I'm figuring the time right, we'll get somewhere around six hours of actual park time after transportation is factored in.
So, Epcot is the least likely to make him want to commit harikari. The transportation drops you off at the TTC, so we'd have to take the monorail over. Between lunch and getting a few drinks in World Showcase, I'm figuring a good plan is three, possibly four rides tops. You get one E ticket Fastpass and two D (?) ticket ones at a time. So I figured Soarin', Mission: Space, and Spaceship Earth. Would anyone recommend switching out Test Track for Soarin'?
Or is it just less complicated to do MK, even if that means no booze? We'll be there on a weekday in January if that makes a difference.

stay in World Showcase, r356. keep Soarin. ditch Mission Space in favor of... more World Showcase.

R359, a simulated flight over California's (and I guess the rest of the world now) most famous sights at California Adventure. Epcot has it too. Originally conceived for Disney's America theme park (Victory Field).
by Anonymous | reply 361 | August 24, 2018 6:50 AM |
Several planned attractions for Disney’s American ended up at Disney’s California Adventure when it opened in 2001. The Family Farm land concept was reworked into the Bountiful Valley Farm and the Victory Field idea was repurposed into Condor Flats. California Adventure’s Grizzly River Run was inspired by the Lewis and Clark Expedition plans, and the concept for Calfornia Screamin’ came from the roller coaster ride that would have been located in the State Fair at Disney’ America. Soarin’, which can be found at both Epcot and California Adventure, developed from rides planned for Victory Field.

The reason Magic Mountain gets a sordid crowd of every stripe is because Supermax Prison is only seven miles north of it and Wayside Correctional Jail is even closer. If you live in L.A. or Orange County, going to Magic Mountain is a pretty long haul, taking from an hour to two hours depending on location. It's smart to combine your trip. So you can visit your loved one at the jail in the morning, then go to Magic Mountain right after. What a fun day!
by Anonymous | reply 367 | August 25, 2018 3:16 AM |

Many Disney fans hate the use of the most popular contemporary characters and movies to theme new attractions in the parks. They call it "IP-izing" the parks. They're very attached to old attractions and hate when they change. The weird, boring, and unfunny old ride in the Norway pavilion is now a Frozen ride, and they freaked the fuck out when it changed. They endlessly bitch about how "their" park is changing. Every change is a tragedy.
Snobbish assholes.

I think the switch at DCA from Tower of Terror to Mission: Breakout caused the most howling. It's "stupid and shortsighted" because Marvel and Frozen aren't always going to be popular, so it's stupid to mess with something timeless. They don't seem to get that Disney was always about putting maintenance costs off on the sponsors, and more and more sponsors don't need to sponsor something like a world's fair pavilion to reach consumers. Toy Story Land is sponsored by Babybel Cheese, and that's a far cry from Exxon at the Universe of Energy or Siemens at Spaceship Earth. They really want to add a country to the World Showcase (most likely Brazil, to finally get the southern hemisphere repped), but can't afford to invest half a billion dollars into something that won't be guaranteed to drive attendance the way Avatar, or Marvel, or Star Wars will.
Yes, it's a shame that the educational aspects of Epcot are basically gone at this point, but that was not the reason most people went. The hardcore are not the ones that makes Disney most of its money.

It's not like they didn't do the analyses, factoring projecting duration of sufficient popularity to attract estimated additional visitors, with bumps following movie releases etc. factored in. I'm sure they have a substantially greater ROI by keeping rides relatively fresh vs. keeping things "classic." They wouldn't do it otherwise. And they're going to destroy today's newer attractions once the returns aren't as profitable as new alternatives; nothing is permanent. They're not claiming Frozen, Marvel, etc. are timeless. And anyway, how is The Twilight Zone "timeless?" It's from the 1950s and no one knows what it is anymore lol.
It makes perfect sense. The old attractions are also really depressing to look at - e.g., the cars in Autopia. Everything should be as fresh as possible, skinned with the latest and/or most popular characters and movies, as long as projected profitability is enhanced. Nostalgia for old movies characters isn't going to attract the most profitable visitors - families with kids. Repeat visitor fans obsessed with old tires can't compete. They've done the math and rolled things out progressively to verify their projections.

Right. I don't know, I love the Disney parks, and it's always a little sad when something you loved changes, but it has to happen eventually. Otherwise, the alternative is let something be neglected. Horizons deserved a better ending that it got, but it also didn't deserve to be in the state it was when it finally closed.

They also don't seem to understand that despite positioning itself as a place for magic adventures, WDW is in fact an exercise in ruthless capitalism. They also seem to interested in Alternative Facts about certain things. Don't judge me, but I was listening to a Disney parks podcast on my way home from work yesterday because traffic was really bad and I was bored. They were talking about how Toy Story Land has been a big dud and people are able to walk onto the rollercoaster there because attendance has been so low. Except I looked it up out of idle curiosity, and there's currently a 60 minute wait. And apparently one of the hosts (who both live in Orlando) had driven past the MK parking lot and it was basically empty. Currently 70 minute waits for Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, and Jungle Cruise, 75 minutes for Space Mountain, and two hours for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Downtown Disney is nice, too, but they closed a number of places to make way for the new 4-diamond hotel, which has been placed on hold indefinitely. Disney and Anaheim also eliminated any tax incentives they'd negotiated for not only the hotel but generally. The new hotel looked nice - contemporary, high-end.

R419, how close to the parks do you live? Do you prefer the original or California Adventure? I prefer California Adventure myself, but I don't recall their having particularly good restaurants.
I've been to the kingdom parks quite a few times and I'm kind of over them unless one gets some really amazing new ride.
So much space to expand, with all the asphalt parking wasting space (vs. garages).
by Anonymous | reply 423 | September 4, 2018 2:41 PM |
R423 we live in LA. We started going to the parks when California Adventure was starting to change. I remember the big Golden Gate Bridge at the entrance and their playing Dionne's "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" on the loudspeakers, which was campy and fun. I like it better now I think, but they've left alone most of my favorite parts, including the wine terrace with its little vineyard and the California parks section. I do miss the California version of Soarin'.
Yes, we've kind of slowed down with the parks and we tend to focus on special events and also more on food and wine. It is expensive, but there is some excellent food to be had at DLR. So we may only go down for dinner and fireworks, which never get old, or to do a few rides only. Things are changing frequently enough that there always seems to be something new.
One time we were in an elevator with a man who did a special kind of maintenance at DLR (don't want to be too specific because it was a very particular role). He said that he once was working in a room where they had tons of maps laid out, and he said it looked like they owned huge patches of Anaheim and could expand wherever they wanted. But their failure to build the second entrance makes me think that he saw what they WANTED to own, not what they did. It's not like DW, where they have thousands of acres to build.
by Anonymous | reply 425 | September 4, 2018 7:38 PM |
I really feel like they shot themselves in the foot. The entire purpose in picking DCA over the WestCOT second gate was because it was cheaper, but given all the money they've had to pump into DCA to keep it going--and the bundle they're going to have to shell out to bring the Avengers in as well, they might as well have bitten the bullet and spent the money to buy the land for WestCOT.

The thinking is because WDW is a much more international destination and a "once in a lifetime" experience, they don't want to have a re-theme taking up almost a quarter of the year. Disneyland, which tends to attract a more local crowd, can do it without hurting guest satisfaction.

Well I never suspected Justin Scarred was gay just super hyper and he needs meds seriously.
He has a young boy that he's in a custody battle with his ex wife over and he's always with Ally who's pretty, quiet and unassuming. Fag hags are not pretty, quiet and unassuming. A recent vlog video had him looking around an antique store where he was seriously about to have a nervous breakdown.
I so wish he had not covered his forearms with those tatts. A complete manifestation of his mental instability. In a way I can't blame his ex wife for giving him major child custody problems. I mean the guy always seems like he's on the edge of a major collapse.
He had one video where he was in Disneyland Paris early in the morning then took his flight home to LA and then ended his evening in Disneyland.
His life is going to end in tears. He's the Judy Garland of Disney Vloggers.
For a real cutie, though also straight, Charles Boda on Dis Unplugged is a very good looking and funny guy. But an eldergay without any hope of sexual favors in return needs to give him serious money to get his teeth fixed. Pete give him a big raise or great dental benefits!

Check out the Disney Food Blog for endless but never boring tips from AJ.
Jen Leforge as a mother and runner has tips for the most part for families and Disney Vacation Club members. I can't remember what her vlog is called but it's always popping up. She's a sweetheart.

Micechat is another great site. Covers both parks, although WDW was a one-time visit for me. Orlando is a hellhole.
by Anonymous | reply 447 | September 5, 2018 5:33 AM |
If you stay on property you completely avoid Orlando. Many people leave for a day or two to see Universal.
When I was very young with my family and a friend I went a couple of times in the 70s which was the best time in its history. It really was a magical place and not at all corporate or they covered it real well. It was created by Disney's own employees who had worked with him for years and knew directly the sensibility he wanted the park to have. Now with all the cash grabs and them all dead or retired it's become as mercenary as a soldier of fortune. The knives are out to increase revenue and to squeeze you dry. Sometimes what they come up is so galling it is outright in your face cynical. But people love it. A lot of people must be printing money in Trump's US.

Love Disney but he was a friendly witness for the HUAC(Disney fanatics completely ignore this) and strongly anti union(again they ignore this.)
But worst of all he called Maureen O'Hara a bitch when she called him having heard he was ill.
She dared to confront him over the fact that it was in her contract that she receive star billing in The Parent Trap but he instead gave it to 'Hayley Mills and Hayley Mills.'

I mean, of course you should like what you like. I just don't get why DCA is worth that level of affection right now. I'm sure Avengers-Land (they are not allowed to use the name Marvel Land while the contract with Universal is still in effect) will be a huge hit, but really, even Pixar Pier is just a coat of paint on the same old stuff. I just wish they'd push the envelope a little harder.

The best part of DCA is Cars Land. It is amazing, but it’s a shame, because I have no affection for that franchise whatsoever.

So Disneyland is getting Star Wars and DCA is getting Avengers? Wow, both are going to be packed. Shame they can't have a third park so each one isn't as crowded.
They really need to buy out that Universal Marvel contract.

Next time I go I'm hiring a tour guide. Expensive but you don't wait in line and there are other perks.
Starting at $2600 for six hours. Arguably worth it. Especially if the guide (called a "plaid") is cute.

My ex was a VP for the studio, and I got used to the perks. But a guide is great, especially since you can divide that cost by either 6 or 8. It's been awhile, so I forget.

In 1998 Disney finally bought the 56-acre "strawberry fields" property in Anaheim, from the family of Hiroshi Fujishige, the strawberry farmer who steadfastly refused to sell it to Disney for decades. Disney paid $95 million for the land, and also bought a 23-acre parcel adjoining it for $30 million.
So Disney has 79 acres in Anaheim, south of Katella and east of Harbor, that could be the site of a third Anaheim park, the long-rumored "third gate." They would have to build some kind of transportation system to carry guests from that park to the other 2 Anaheim parks, possibly an extension of the Monorail. For now, Disney is using the land as an employee parking lot, I think.
Regarding Six Flags Magic Mountain, it opened in 1971 as simply "Magic Mountain." Six Flags bought it in 1979 and added its name onto the name of the park. Six Flags Magic Mountain is 35 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Six Flags Magic Mountain currently hold the record for the most roller coasters in one park (19) of any amusement park in the world.

In one of those "what might have been" scenarios, Walt Disney proposed that he would build a Monorail from LAX to Disneyland if the city donated the land.

Wasn't one of the main complaints about DCA that the lack of a berm broke the illusion? Disney is usually really care to maintain the immersive experience, to the point that Tower of Terror at Hollywood Studios was designed to blend into the silhouette of the Morocco pavilion because it's tall enough to be seen when you're standing on the opposite side of World Showcase Lagoon.
Wouldn't monorail-ing guests to a park that's not even physically connected be even worse?
And what would they put in a third gate? They've already got a home for Marvel and Star Wars.

A third park... Disney Sea is too expensive and big... Can't imagine what it would be. Disney's America became California Adventure basically... Not a studio park of course... Maybe Westcot after all.
I wonder if they have any park concepts that they haven't built. Like actual whole parks based on a theme. Somehow i doubt it. Waste of resources at this point since you can just iterate on the existing parks (studio parks in Orlando then Paris and soon Hong Kong).

I mean, aside from the Mineral King ski resort, I can't imagine we haven't seen most of their concepts. Disney's America became DCA, as you noted, and Port Disney became DisneySea. And honestly, given the existence of the resorts at Vero Beach, Hilton Head, and Oahu, I don't rule out a ski resort at this point.

by Anonymous | reply 484 | September 8, 2018 11:49 PM |
I don't see how the new skyway from the value resorts to the theme parks is going to be in any way efficient. You're going to have thousands of people wanting to use them at the same time and they'll have limited capacity. The lines I imagine will be very long waits. Especially when the parks open and then close. And with Galaxy's Edge opening at the same time?
WDW can't even maintain its monorails or keep its rides from breaking down as it is now. And they're taking on all of this at once?
During one trip on a Halloween party night before the fireworks I had plenty of time and wanted to do the Haunted Mansion. Everything went fine until we got into the ride itself. It broke down and we were trapped. We couldn't get out. Then it started up again we got on and it stalled again so we missed the special fireworks. Later on in the trip we wanted to get to the parade in the Magic Kingdom from the Floridian. No problem only a few minutes right? No fucking monorail! Like waiting for a subway train early Sunday morning. When we finally made it in a packed car the parade was half over and we couldn't even get onto mainstreet. Had to walk behind it in the backlot which looks like the back of a strip mall. A total dick wilter.
So Iger can make over a million a year and they've gotten very short staffed. But Disney fanatics don't give a fuck. They're total bottoms. Fuck 'em all you want.
by Anonymous | reply 485 | September 9, 2018 12:13 AM |
The monorails at Disneyland have always broken down in hot weather- that evidently has always been an issue.
As for being "trapped" on a ride, if you are just in line there is always a way to leave if you don't want to wait.
Talk about bottoms!

[quote]I don't see how the new skyway from the value resorts to the theme parks is going to be in any way efficient. You're going to have thousands of people wanting to use them at the same time and they'll have limited capacity.
I think from a practical standpoint, the only people who are going to use it are the guests staying at the various hotels that the line services (Caribbean Beach has 2100, Art of Animation has 1000, Pop Century has 2800, and the new Riviera is going to have about 300), so call that 25K guests if every room is filled with quad occupancy, and every single one of them is going to want to go to either Hollywood Studios or Epcot at the same time before those numbers translate into a huge bottleneck. And the only other people who feed into that are what I imagine are the rare people who want to go between the two parks.
I doubt they would be sinking so much money into this construction if they didn't think it was going to be something guests want and will tolerate.

A list of the Disney parks, lands and attractions that were never built
by Anonymous | reply 488 | September 9, 2018 3:44 AM |
Even the Disneyland Monorail, which opened in 1959, leaves the park and runs alongside Harbor Boulevard, in full view of many other businesses and a rather unattractive view of traffic. It then cut across the parking lot (now the site of DCA) on its way to the Disneyland Hotel.
So Walt himself had no problem with guests seeing "beyond the berm" in the case of the Monorail. You board the Monorail in the idealized world of Disneyland, then a minute later you are looking at ugly motels, strip malls and traffic, even today. It kind of shatters the "immersive experience," in my opinion. But Walt was fine with it.
Yes, R464, I remember there were a lot of complaints about DCA when it opened in 2001 (now referred to on some sites as "DCA 1.0." One complaint was that you could see outside the park, including a couple of hotels next to the park, power lines, etc. The "real world" intruded, as opposed to at Disneyland, where you're mostly insulated from it by the berm.
That park was basically Michael Eisner's baby, and it was criticized for a lack of imagination, too much concrete and for having been done "on the cheap." Some of the attractions were basically off-the-shelf carnival rides, given a Disney coat of paint. There was a low number of quality "E ticket" level attractions. Yet they were charging the same price to get in it as it was to get into Disneyland, but it was only "half a park." Since then, the company has made additions and improvements to DCA (at a cost of over $1 billion).

If you are inside the Haunted Mansion right where they load the buggies and it stops please tell me how do you get out?
Clearly somebody who has never been on the ride and has no idea what they are talking about. Also I was reading about Pirates always breaking down. This has never happened to me but a friend told me it happened to her, they turned on all the lights and they had to walk out.
Also I go back a ways and the monorails never broke down, they were always a smooth fast comfortable way of getting around. Also when it stops for no reason and you are between stops the smell of urine reeks. Not something I've experienced but again it was reported. I I have been seeing on a lot of videos of people complaining about the lack of reliability. I can confirm this. It wasn't always this way.
Disney pays it's CEO about133 million a year when there had to be quite a fight recently to raise the minimum raise. Remember years ago when Eisner gave his friend Ovitz a job for a year to do nothing and handed him 30 million? God knows what it would be worth today. The Magic Kingdom has no nighttime parade except for holiday nights. The evening parade was always an event leading up to the fireworks. Why don't they have one now? Too cheap. Also they now have late magic hours. The park closes at 9 so for $100 you have 3 hours to the park with a very small crowd. $100 for 3 hours? This seems absurd to me. It used to be either the day guests got those hours or at least resort guests. Now they want more money. They used to have during the summer 'Magic Till Midnight.' This meant the park was open to everyone till midnight with no extra charge.
One thing I really don't understand is the big thing with adults wanting pictures with characters. Before it was a children's thing. Parents were in it as part of a family or possibly you ran into Mickey on the street. Now adults will wait up to an hour to get a picture with the 7 dwarfs or Captain hook and have no children. I find this really strange.
They used to have nice cheap ceramics. I only know this because a sister told me I once a long time ago bought ceramics of some of their princesses that were so beautiful. They had to have been pretty affordable or I never would have bought them.
by Anonymous | reply 491 | September 9, 2018 10:37 AM |
Also I heard they got rid of the Animal Kingdom parade. I saw it years ago not knowing they even have one. I just happened upon it. It was terrific. Budget cuts.
Translation: Iger got an increase in stock options..

Eisnerland is a poisoned well.
by Anonymous | reply 493 | September 9, 2018 1:02 PM |
R491, actually I have a pass and was just at Disneyland Friday. Sometimes if a ride breaks down, they make an announcement and give you an option to leave. If you were pre- boarding Haunted, you look for a cast member and they will escort you out. There are plenty of doors everyplace- you just don't always notice them, even with the exit signs.
by Anonymous | reply 494 | September 9, 2018 4:57 PM |
At WDW there are very few cast members and good luck finding one when they pack hundreds of people into one place where people can barely move. Then everything stops. No general public announcement is made and you're like how do I get out of here. Of course if you are on an outside line it's a different thing. I remember somebody complaining about being trapped on one of the internal queues at 7 Dwarfs Mine roller coaster. They couldn't get out and they couldn't see a cast member.
On the vlogs I see Disneyland gets much better marks than the Magic Kingdom. Disney fanatics who go regularly to both parks prefer it.
by Anonymous | reply 495 | September 9, 2018 5:11 PM |

I was stuck once on a ride line and just barged my way backwards.
by Anonymous | reply 496 | September 9, 2018 5:15 PM |
Remember in the HM by the time you get to the buggies you would have to fight your way through the packed queue, fight the crowd leaving the stretching room to get into it, endure that routine, then fight the crowd entering it to leave it...oy.
by Anonymous | reply 497 | September 9, 2018 5:37 PM |
Well, not really. There are plenty of cast members to let you out before the stretching room. At least at Disneyland. There's a door that goes directly out to the graveyard.

A beau? Yes we always go on Disney vacations in antebellum gowns with parasols to protect our moonlight white skin from the sun. Especially needed in Toy Story Land where Disney Imagineers imagined there'd be no sun so there is no shade anywhere. Also no place to sit.

Not enough gay Imagineers. Everything would be so much better with them. Tomorrowland would actually look like a future we'd like, things like trees and share wouldn't be overlooked. As I'm on the opposite coast I haven't been to Disneyland in years. But how could they have fucked up the people mover so royally by repurposing it for a thrill ride it wasn't built for? I mean how stupid could these ride engineers and designers be?
Then instead of rebuilding it they let the tracks sit there to rot and become an eyesore?
Why can't they just build it over again because people loved it so much?
They can't because that would cost money and we know Disney has no money.

They would have to do it from scratch. The conversion to Rocket Rods damaged the track. They'd never spent that kind of money on something that is only appealing to the fanboys. And I count myself as one of those, for the record.

I could never understand why they removed the skyways except for the fact that since the 70s Disney tourists on the whole have gotten so fat they weren't built to carry those heavy loads. They'd have to rebuild them entirely.
I read that they had to rebuild the waterways in Pirates because the boats were sinking down in the water more than they did originally.
But then that would have affected Peter Pan and Small World as well.

In an article I found on Wired from 2007 it says Pirates was having the same problem as Small World and the flume(what I meant when I said waterway) was going to be made an inch deeper on Small World.
Also according to the article when the problem was first noticed the boats were not filled to capacity especially if fat people got on the boats but the overall increased weight of people was still causing problems.
Now 11 years later are people even fatter than they were in 2007?

I got bored at work and actually started reading about the possibility of bringing Wakanda to Epcot. Apparently, this may result in a renegotiation with Universal. There is one small piece of artwork at IoA that depicts T'Challa, so that may prevent them from using him, even though it's an overall tiny presence there.
However, if they can't reach an agreement, the rumor is they're going to redo the Wonders of Life space as an Innoventions type technology expo, host by Shuri. I'm hoping they'll be able to work it out.

They have consumer products issues. Low quality, bad design. They're too permissive in licensing. J.K. Rowling is infinitely more careful and it shows. It's been a weak spot in earnings for Disney.

Disney's consumer products division has sucked for years. Too many desision makers that don't know know the characters or what people want. They succeed only because Disney is so popular and people will buy anything.

Supposedly the men who created Snow White also made a porn version. A well known film historian whose name now escapes me saw it and refused to discuss it.
I guess he wished he had never watched it.

Like hotter than even Prince Hans, Flynn Rider, or Prince Eric. With an even more beautiful voice than Hans's.
Can't imagine whom they'd cast for his voice.

Apparently, the long term plans for the Skyliner involve connecting Animal Kingdom, the water parks, and Disney Springs. Each gondola can hold a max of eight people (well, four Americans), and it will run continuously, so it shouldn't bottleneck any more than the monorail does at peak times. Cheaper than extending the monorail (much faster to construct, as well) and more direct and with less pollution than the busses.
by Anonymous | reply 549 | September 14, 2018 3:31 PM |
8 people in a gondola when thousands of people will be waiting for them at peak times and a number will be so fat they'll have to use scooters in the parks. And all those wretched children in them.
This should be interesting.

I don't give a shit about Frozen.
I want to know if James Macarthur, Tommy Kirk and John Mills were getting it on in the secluded Caribbean waters during the filming of Swiss Family Robinson.

Apparently the new rumor is that Zootopia will be coming to Animal Kingdom, replacing the soon-to-close Rafiki's Planet Watch.

Tommy Kirk took James, John and most of the crew. He was wearing a diaper by the end of filming.

10 more days 'til Gay Days Anaheim!
by Anonymous | reply 556 | September 26, 2018 5:46 AM |
Gay Days used to be great- no kids and great drugs. Now it's borderline frauen with lesbian baster babies and fagela that bought kids in China on the cheap (just like Disney merch).
by Anonymous | reply 557 | September 26, 2018 7:00 AM |
They should split Gay Days between the parks, with singles in one and families in the other.

Never stayed on property before.

by Anonymous | reply 563 | September 29, 2018 2:52 AM |
In the entire history of Disneyworld next Christmas with the holiday, the opening of Galaxy's Edge and the new gondola skyway I imagine will be the worst time ever to be there.
I was told they are booking for Jan 2020 which makes more sense in that it will be after the holiday and they'll have worked out a number of kinks that every new venture involves.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | September 29, 2018 3:42 AM |
The announcement for Galaxy's Edge said "Late Fall 2019," so I'm rolling the dice. The Skyliner is probably sooner than that. They seem to be going faster than expected, and someone took photos that showed that they're starting to hang the gondolas.
by Anonymous | reply 565 | September 29, 2018 11:51 AM |
I'm going this Christmas to avoid what is going to be next year's hell. I just talked to someone who came back who told me there is construction everywhere. Pete Werner who has a travel agency and a vlog Dis Unplugged is calling it Walt Disney Construction World. And then after Galaxy's Edge is completed they'll finish Tron.
It will be a few years before the crowds settle down and it will be tolerable again. At least I'm hoping. It might never be again as it is already so crowded year round.

[quote]Pete Werner who has a travel agency and a vlog Dis Unplugged is calling it Walt Disney Construction World. And then after Galaxy's Edge is completed they'll finish Tron.
Yeah, there's a LOT going on construction wise. Guardians of the Galaxy and Ratatouille at Epcot, Galaxy's Edge and the Mickey coaster AND the new Cars thing they just announced at the Studios. The Tron ride is going to start work soon, because the WDW railroad and Tomorrowland Speedway are shutting down soon. The NBA Experience is replacing DisneyQuest at Disney Springs and they're always building new restaurants there. And in addition to the Skyliner construction at the Art of Animation, Pop Century, Epcot, and Studios, they're doing massive work on Caribbean Beach and Coronado Springs.
They'll probably slow down after 2020, though. This is a big push to get them to the 50th anniversary in 2021.
by Anonymous | reply 567 | September 29, 2018 6:19 PM |
Which means I'll hope to go back in 2022 to see all the new stuff. I'm not a Star Wars or Tron fan but the immersive rides and theme park concepts are fun.
But as Pete was saying with all the money they are spending expect the possibility of $200 a day theme park tickets in a year or two with the new flexible pricing they'll be implementing mid Oct. What Star Wars fan wouldn't pay it and Disney has never been shy about raising prices to extortionist levels. People will pay it so why shouldn't they?
There is a POV of Tron in Shanghai on youtube. Looks spectacular but it seems especially short.

[quote]Pete Werner who has a travel agency and a vlog Dis Unplugged is calling it Walt Disney Construction World.
They should call it Roller Coaster World. It seems like they have run out of ideas for innovative rides. Now everything new is a thrill ride, usually some form of roller coaster. It stinks that they don't do more with shows and mild rides.
by Anonymous | reply 569 | September 29, 2018 8:46 PM |
The Na'Vi River Journey dark ride has proved to be almost as popular as Flight of Passage. The Ratatouille ride coming to Epcot France is also a dark ride.

If Galaxy's Edge opens...say, Mid November, I wonder what it's going to do to the crowds in what is traditionally the slower season in the two weeks after Thanksgiving. I know you'll have more people there, but will it be summer-like crowds? Or will people just gravitate towards GE and not change any traffic to the other parks.
by Anonymous | reply 571 | September 30, 2018 12:39 AM |
I'm wondering if they're going to need separate tickets to Galaxy's Edge. I mean there were lines just to get into Toy Story Land within the Hollywood Studios park when it opened and this was nothing compared to what Galaxy's Edge will be like. Also I believe the spillover from all the additional visitors will affect the other parks as well.

The downside being that because the technology is so good (seriously, if it's that good on YouTube, it must be jaw-dropping in person), they're starting to get away from doing shows with actual fireworks. The forthcoming replacement for IllumniNations is apparently going to primarily use drones.

At least at Disneyland, the fireworks are cancelled quite a bit due to weather, especially on windy nights. Anaheim FD has to be on site. With all of our fires, I wouldn't be surprised if they did away with them.

A seventh resort is ‘an inevitability’
Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, told analysts in May that there was “an inevitability” to Disney’s building a seventh theme park resort in China or another country, although he cautioned that no plans were on the horizon.
“But we’re going to look,” he said. Mr. Iger’s bullishness reflects the strong response to Shanghai Disneyland, which opened in 2016 at a cost of $5.5 billion. With its growing middle class, China is a particularly important growth market for Disney.
Even so, a couple of Disney’s older overseas parks have never lived up to their promise, and Mr. Iger wants to fix those headaches once and for all. That’s one reason Hong Kong Disneyland is undergoing a $1.4 billion expansion, with half of the bill paid by the local government, which is a co-owner.
The Hong Kong park, which opened in 2005, has lost money for three years running, in part because of a regional tourism slump. To turn the property around, Disney is adding two “Avengers”-themed attractions; building the entire “Frozen” kingdom of Arendelle, with two icicle-covered rides; and supersizing the park’s castle.

I had to think for a minute what they meant by "7th":
1. Disneyland Resort
2. Walt Disney World
3. Tokyo Disney Resort
4. Disneyland Paris (they changed the name of the whole resort, and now the first park is called Disneyland Park)
5. Hong Kong Disneyland Resort
6. Shanghai Disney Resort
The names are so different from each other.

So many parks. I can't imagine anywhere else they'd build.

I think the idea of a resort in Saudi Arabia is probably off the table for the foreseeable future. I'm kind of surprised they would have considered it at all; I don't believe any Disneyland Dubai was in the offing, and indeed they put the kibosh on a planned Marvel theme park when they bought the company.
The IllumiNations replacement is going to be focused on Disney music and characters, which is hardly surprising. But they're ending the former early and having a temp replacement called Epcot Forever, which I'm betting is in part a wake for the Epcot of old, because it's going to be using music from the park's history. I'm glad I'm going to be there to see it. They've also added a new show to the Studios focused on animation. I'm happy it's something focused movies for once.
I'd forgotten just how good the score to IllumiNations is. ABC used to use parts of it for some of their news coverage.

It's going to be another resort in East Asia —probably China again, in the Beijing area. Disney has an excellent relationship with the government, and it makes sense: Hong Kong is way south, Shanghai is in the middle, and Beijing is north. They're going to have to make it somewhat resilient to colder weather, however, like Tokyo Disney Resort.
The thing is, though, I can't imagine they're going to start with another kingdom park. That'll make four in East Asia, where there's just one in the EU and just two in America. Maybe they'll start with a studio/movies park, since there are only two of those, in Paris and Florida. Or maybe an Epcot-style park, bringing the Americas, Europe, and Africa to middle class guests who've never been to any of those places. Or maybe they have an entirely new park concept to build (can't imagine what, tough).
I always thought they'd build in South Korea, since they have money and love theme parks and Disney.

China isn't great given its an authoritarian regime, but Saudi Arabia would be far worse. Might as well build in Iran or Belarus. Or Russia.
I'd boycott Disney if they decided to build a park in Saudi Arabia or almost anywhere in the Middle East, actually.
