Ok, so an acquaintance of mine (a Democrat) posted a hit piece on Gavin Newsom today on FB. It annoyed the hell out of me because the write is clearly out to get Newsom by calling him a silver-spoon baby, born rich and with all the advantages. And of course rakes him over the coals for his families relationship with the Gettys. The author is clearly for Villaraigosa, who was a terrible mayor for LA and who I would never vote for. Does anybody who knows anything about Newsom have something good to say about him? I honestly don't know much except that he was the first to start marrying gay people in this country, even before it was legal. I love him for that.
Gavin Newsome

dammit. Sorry I misspelled his name
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 11, 2018 5:51 AM |
Newsom actually grew up somewhat poor, in a single family household. Even though his father was a Getty attorney, his parents divorced when he was two, and his mother got zilch (partly because his Dad squandered his money). She had to work 3 jobs to care for the kids. His mom sponsored foster kids and was active in volunteering for homeless. She made the kids work jobs in high school to support themselves and the family.
As Mayor, in addition to Newsom's bold move to illegally marry people on Valentine's Day 2004, which set the SSM national debate on fire, he was a champion of the homeless, and one of the first Mayors to actually start programs to support homeless people rather than throwing money at them.

I'm not all that familiar with California politicians except what you hear on the news. Newsom always came across as a good guy.
What's the deal with Villaraigosa? When he was mayor he seemed okay and there was some sort of scandal and then Garcetti was mayor.

The scandal was that he had an affair while married (so did Newsom, I think) but that isn't why I don't like Villaraigosa. I actually VOTED for the dude and then I remember thinking Geez this guy is absolutely terrible as mayor. He doesn't know how to do anything right. I would never want to trust the running of the entire state to him.
The author is clearly for Villaraigosa, who was a terrible mayor for LA
Villaraigosa was not a bad mayor by any means. The arts district was one of his babies, and he was one of the first California mayors who pointed out the dangers of the One Way Ticket Program, a few years later he was proven right.
If you watch the debates, he won the two debates and then made Travis Allen eyes watery when he attacked Gavin Newsom.
I am voting for Newsom but I'm definitely not going to trash Villaraigosa when his campaign has been stellar.

Villaraigosa is a toxic-narcissist adoration whore who led the charge in selling L.A. out to big development. Also, the day-to-day of his actual job---taking care of the city---wasn't fab enough for him. He had ridiculous delusions of glamour (and grandeur), and let the infrastructure and the nuts and bolts go to hell because he was too busy doing international junkets around the world, hob-nobbing with what he saw as big-money movers and shakers, and posing, posing, posing for the TV cameras. He screwed around on his wife with some bimbo while in office, tried to lie his way out of it, had to eat crow, and all-around made a royal ass out of himself over that one. It showed a very ugly face to the locals. There was quite a nice little scandal after some news outlet got hold of his actual schedule and publicized how much time he spent junketing, flying around to other countries to rub elbows with foreign governments and pose for cameras, and how little time he actually spent doing his job, or even in the city. A real piece of work attention junkie who simply can't bear being prominent in some way, hence we must all put up with seeing that cheesy here-I-am-look-at-me face again with the governorship in play. Seriously, if Newsome, who's no prize but actually did his job, can't put him down, I would vote for a (centrist) Republican over this clown.

The GOPers stole the headlines for their disgusting display towards Gavin. The Republicans definitely had a plan to pummel Gavin and wound him. Chiang, Villaraigosa, and Eastin all spoke out in defense of Gavin. Travis is trying to create buzz by being controversial, as sort of Bernie Sanders type of the rights wing *gag* and in some ways he succeeded because outlets like Politico and NBC were wetting their panties to see drama.
Don't let the reds succeed. The bots are all over facebook and twitter proping up Travis Allen as the revelation of the debate. Vote for Newsom and Villaraigosa for the run off. Don't let the Republican sneak in. The reds are still projected to be eliminated during the primary for both governor and US Senate.

Since no one votes in LA, the Jews easily threw the election his way and he got a second term.
Right now, we should have been enjoying Gavin's second term as governor, and John Chiang should have been prepping to replace him.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 12, 2018 7:47 PM |
R33 honey, you have to love the cameras, the arts, and most importantly celebrity culture if you aspire to be the mayor of L.A. Ain't no country boy is going to cut it in Los Angeles.
Villaraigosa's main supporters are Hollywood, the media/arts, and agriculture. No surprise there. Los Angeles Times has endorsed Villaraigosa over Newsom because they know Antonio is one of them. Antonio already promised them tax incentives for print media & Hollywood to bring their productions back to California. He also has an infrastructure and housing plan which is actually quite interesting.
Newsom is the favorite and has the most experience in handling the state of California. He might be a little SJW, but Gavin is a bulldog and is not afraid to fight the White House. He also has an infrastructure plan which could help eliminate homelessness. Since we are in the age of Trump, he is the perfect person for California. He knows the economy since he is second in command, has international experience to promote California's economy to the world, and will not be afraid to kick Trump's ass. He's the only choice people!
John Chiang, I'm encourage he is one of the favorites. I actually think he has a good shot at upsetting Villaraigosa for that second spot. His campaign skills are definitely impressive and dare I say he is stealing Latino voters away from both Newsom and Antonio. Only in California we have a Democratic white male, a Democratic Latino, a Democratic Chinese-American born in New York, and a Democratic woman as the top contenders for governorship.
My only problem is that Villaraigosa, Chiang, and Eastin might cancel each other out and allow for Cox (R) or god forbid Travis Allen (R) to sneak into the November elections.
Whatever you do people, do not split the vote in ways that would allow for a Repub to make the November ballot !!! In the primary you have a choice to vote for the two people you want, do not pick Eastin because she is running 4th. It would be a waste and a vote for Republicans.
The choice should be Newsom ( 1st pick) and your second pick should be between Villarigosa or Chiang and no one else.
In other news, the GOP is falling apart. They failed to endorsed a GOP candidate for the governor's race. We are like 3 1/2 weeks away from the primary. I have never seen the GOP do this badly.

Tony Villar (Raigosa was his ex-wife's last name) is a slimeball. He was a shitty mayor, whom I voted for the first time around. His aspirations are way above his qualifications.
His backing comes mainly from Eli Broad, who is a billionaire dedicated to charter schools. Villaraigosa sold out LA schools to Broad-backed school board members like the good robot his is. While in office, he had a very public affair with Lu Parker, a local news anchor, who reported on him as mayor. She was reassigned and reprimanded at her station. He spent millions of public dollars to remodel Getty House, which was the official mayor's residence, but had not been used as such for decades, move in, then separate from Corine, and move out. I'm not sure if Garcetti lives there, but it was a colossal waste of money at a time when LA had little to go around.
I'm voting for Newsom, though I could be swayed to support Chiang. Newsom is running a sad, pathetic TV spot with Gabby Giffords and her astronaut husband, and it makes me question his judgment.

We definitely have a Villaraigosa troll here. He did have a few hiccups in his first term, but he is the reason crime went down and Los Angeles was able to survive the 2008 recession without falling into a deficit. A lot of the planned infrastructure we are seeing in Los Angeles today, was planned in his time as mayor. He got investors to come to Southern California and started the modern arts wave in California.
His extramarital affair is not a concern to me, especially when Gavin Newsom also had his, and the GOP has no moral grounds to be criticizing anyone.
Newsom is running a sad, pathetic TV spot with Gabby Giffords and her astronaut husband, and it makes me question his judgment.
There's a better reason to question Newsom's judgment: his drinking. Yes, Breton's was a hit piece. Gavin has had an easy ride after college due to the Getty's largesse, but lots of people in politics have wealthy benefactors and similar stories.
I don't know if anyone bothered to delve a little further into the part of the article dealing with his sobriety. He showed up in his official capacity as mayor to a hospital where a critically injured policeman had been taken when he was visibly intoxicated. He had an affair with his best friend's wife who was an employee of City Hall and he attributed his poor judgment to his problematic drinking, he promised to go into rehab, yada, yada. He did not. He went to "counseling sessions" with a close personal friend at Delancy Street and they eventually decided he could resume drinking, which he did. He spent roughly half of his time in therapy, a year and a half discussing whether he could start drinking again!
Newsom, who was re-elected to his second mayoral term during the aftermath of the scandal, declined to say whether he ever sought to correct the record when news outlets reported he'd gone to rehab.
He told The Sacramento Bee that he sought counseling back then from Mimi Silbert, president of the Delancey Street Foundation, a nonprofit rehabilitation center in San Francisco that specializes in substance abuse treatment and helps ex-convicts and homeless people.
"Mimi called me and ... she said, 'You and I are going to spend every night in the next few weeks together,' " Newsom said. "She said, 'I want you to stop drinking. I want a reset in your life. I want to spend time, what the hell's going on?' "
Newsom called Silbert "one of the most extraordinary, important human beings in my life," who was "profoundly influential in helping me get through that." He said he'd recently been divorced. His mom passed away, and he suggested he was feeling the pressure of being mayor.
Silbert told The Sacramento Bee in an interview that Newsom attended Delancey Street Foundation roughly once a week for three years for personal and group therapy. Though it is not a traditional rehabilitation program, Silbert said she requires that participants abstain from using all drugs and alcohol.
Through therapy, she said, she learned that Newsom's drinking was a way to cope with underlying issues.
"Being a good person and being a good friend means a lot to Gavin. And he broke those codes," Silbert said. "Sometimes it happens when you're really hurt and really down and then you're not yourself for a while. You're angry at yourself and you self-sabotage. People do this from time to time, and he did. So it really wasn't just the drinking.
"He not only stopped drinking, he forgave himself and he asked other people for forgiveness for what he had done," Silbert said. "In that process, he so bettered himself, he so opened up, he so cared about people."
Silbert said Newsom learned from others in the program — mostly ex-convicts, gang members and homeless people.
He didn't drink for roughly half of the time he attended Delancey Street, Silbert said. When it came time to discuss whether he could responsibly imbibe again, she said, she weighed heavily Newsom's past behavior and the root problems that led to the affair and his drinking problems.
He asked permission to drink again, she said.
"We talked for probably a year and a half on that issue ... then said let's see what happens at this party," she said. "Slowly I felt it was fine.

I don't particularly like Breton's opinion columns. He can be a blowhard whose point gets lost in his grievance porn, but I very much doubt he's a Republican. As someone noted above, he and his mother didn't do so well post divorce like many women in the '70. Dad was off being the Getty consigliere. Then he made the masterstroke political maneuver of offering marriage licenses to same-sex couples in the city, knowing full well that the state would never honor those marriages. Overnight, every single friend and family member I had in the city who had absolutely loathed him saw him as a champion for all that is good and right. All his previous sins were washed away.
While I wouldn’t trust him as far as I can throw him, I’ll acknowledge that he has innate sense of what he needs to do to win over voters and has a decent sense of which direction the political winds are blowing. But I also don’t believe for one second that he would have supported marriage equality that early if he thought it would hurt him politically.

This are the latest California Democratic endorsements (state wide)

This is the official California Democratic party endorsements page.
I'm glad hottie Ammar Campa-Najjar (District 50) is endorsed!!!! I could cry.
But the one to watch is Devin Nunes' district (22nd district), Andrew Janz is closing in the gap and money spouring to his campaig from all over the state. The Dems are now calling this race a battleground race.

is pouring*

If Devin Nunes loses I'll dance on the street in a red dress.

This is the most important thing happening in our state.
You Woke Up One Day And Hawaii & California Were Gone?
I don't think it is, especially since there are 7 other House seats that look more winnable than District 22. Jesus, it seems like there are so many urgent things happening in California. It's overwhelms just to think about it.
It's a do or die election because the Dem party expects Californians to flip 7-8 seats in order to take the House. I don't care how liberal the state votes, it still is a tall order for anyone.

And how would that be different from what you normally do?

I normally wear a yellow dress.

Immigrant (Illegal Alien or Anchor) kids have to face the ugly truth that their parents fucked them up, not the US laws.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | May 13, 2018 5:46 PM |
that's strange, I meant to quote R89 but quoted another thread instead. How the fuck does that happen?
Anyway, I would say getting an all Democrat run off in the governor race, an all Democrat run off in the US Senate seat, turning 7 US House seats Democratic, making sure we have a straight Democrat cabinet (Attorney General,CA-Secretary of State, Lt. Governor, State Controller, Insurance Commissioner, State Treasurer, and Superintendent of Public Instruction), and keeping California's Senate/State House Democrat are [bold]all equally important[/bold]. We cannot relinquish not one of them.
Now can someone be a darling and tell me what the Board of Equalization is and why the Dems have not reached a consensus about it??? Where are the endorsements?
[bold]Board of Equalization[/bold]
Dist. 1 No Consensus
Dist. 2 No Consensus
Dist. 3 No Consensus
Wikipedia says : "[italic]The State Board of Equalization is a public agency charged with tax administration and fee collection in the state of California in the United States. The authorities of the Board fell into four broad areas: sales and use taxes, property taxes, special taxes, and acting as an appellate body for franchise and income tax.[/italic]"
In the Statewide Ballot Measures Democrats support Prop. 68, Prop. 69, Prop. 71, Prop. 72, and oppose prop 70.
Again, here is the most recent state endorsement list, before the primary I'm going to print the final updated list and I'm going to take it with me at ballot box.

I already have my mail-in ballot filled out. I'll mail it tomorrow. Straight democratic ticket. Newsom, De Leon, and the judge picks from the Dem website.

Republicans know they have no place to criticize the morals of Dems (like having affairs) so they will pretend to be Dems bringing it up, just as the Russian bots did with Hillary criticizers pretending to be Berniebots.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | May 13, 2018 6:30 PM |
The GOP offers nothing to California. NOTHING.
When they shared power with the Dems, California was in the pits. Now that the Dems have taken over, California’s economy has skyrocketed.
Straight Dem ticket

Having a two party system is healthy to a democracy anywhere. Unfortunately, the Republican party has followed Trump's example and we will never have the type of govt. that CA had back in the early '70s when Reagan and Democrats in the legislature, like Bob Moretti, came up with some of the toughest environmental protection laws in the country. That GOP is long gone, making Republicans in the state, Devin Nunes included, vulnerable. I suspect disaffected GOP will not take to him kindly, especially after Trump's tariff tizzy that hurt their accounting ledgers, pushing them into the red.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | May 14, 2018 5:16 AM |
Not only do I hope Nunes is soundly defeated in the next election, I sincerely hope he will be thrown in jail at some point.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | May 14, 2018 6:11 PM |
r101 That doesn't really mean anything anymore with the way the primary situation is structured in California. In many cases, the only choice is between two (or more) Democrats. And when there are more than two, which is the case in the governor's race and some Congressional races, splitting the vote could end up with a Republican (or even two) getting more votes. A real danger that the egotistic Democrats who refuse to withdraw don't seem to care about.

Wish we could have the California gubernatorial options. Here in Illinois Our primary is done with, and we Democrats have this fatty billionaire (Pritzker) we have to vote for come November.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | May 27, 2018 10:27 PM |
Antonio Sabato Jr. is such a little bitch. I hope he doesn't make the run off for District 26. I can't believe he turned to be such a GOP turd. Getting pictures with Trump. Italians, get your shit together! We cannot afford to lose District 26.
The little hustler is trying to carry the old horny housewife vote.

R108, do you think he'll be good for Illinois ? Either way, the Dems need the governorships in order to secure the census
