Goodnight everybody.
First still of Tyler Hoechlin in bodybuilding film "Bigger"

Will this shock the world?

I'll need to see him from behind.

I'd hit it
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 10, 2018 7:47 PM |
As long as everyone in the cast has a full frontal nude scene, it could be a massive hit

Are Tyler and Colton going to wear Speedos with VPL?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 10, 2018 8:08 PM |
Tyler has an amazing body, but I always thought that he was a bit of a butterface.
He also lacks charisma, which is a turn off for me.
On Teen Wolf, Dylan O'Brien and Tyler Posey each had WAY more personality. Hoechlin was always in the background.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 10, 2018 8:22 PM |
Maybe that Superman butt WAS fake

Are they supposed to be Mickey & Jayne? If so, fail.

So do we know Tyler’s sexual orientation?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 12, 2018 12:42 PM |
A woman to tone down the inevitable homoeroticism in bodybuilding :P

lipstick lez, she likes bulldagger truck drivers. ... viva la difference
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 12, 2018 12:59 PM |
There's not much energy coming off that face. He's charisma deficient.
But I am forgiving. I'd fuck him!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 12, 2018 1:02 PM |
Tell him to drop to all fours and do some glute kickbacks. That’ll shape up that ass in no time.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 12, 2018 1:07 PM |
He's playing Joe Weider, and kind of looks like him.
But who is THIS guy from R10's link?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 12, 2018 1:38 PM |
Lots of hotties in this film. Billy Reilich plays Reg Park.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 12, 2018 1:43 PM |
Obviously the only value of a movie like this is the sexy muscles and orgies.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 12, 2018 1:47 PM |
Hoechlin doesn’t even look like a bodybuilder. What character is he playing?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 12, 2018 1:49 PM |
And starring Datalounge's favorite hometown boy, Calum.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 12, 2018 1:52 PM |
R23, see R20. Joe Weider.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 12, 2018 2:01 PM |
R29, I thought of him at first as well, but no way he could have gained 50lbs of muscle for this flick.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 12, 2018 2:02 PM |
BTW going through the IMDB credits for this movie was fun, lots of hot actors.

Glute kickbacks are useless. It's all about squats, RDLs, hip thrusts and GHRs, brah.

by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 12, 2018 4:58 PM |
I've loved Steve Cook for years. Always hoped he was gay but doubt it. Good to see him in this movie.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 12, 2018 5:04 PM |
I expect the movie to be unrealistic excessively heterosexulised for the sake of cleansing the image of bodybuilding associated with homosexuality and homoeroticism.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 12, 2018 7:44 PM |
I think you are right, R49. When is this movie being released?
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 12, 2018 8:29 PM |
Who is R43?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 12, 2018 10:46 PM |
Tyler Hoechlin from Road to Perdition R51
From 2002
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 12, 2018 10:50 PM |
Is he going to get bigger for "Bigger"? Although he's very nicely built and sexy, he doesn't look much like an actual bodybuilder to me.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 12, 2018 10:56 PM |
You're thinking about bodybuilders of today R53
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 12, 2018 10:57 PM |
He's way too built to play Joe.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 12, 2018 11:08 PM |
Why was this movie necessary? I get it's nice to see attractive people being attractive, but is there a background story, or point I'm missing?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 12, 2018 11:08 PM |
It's s relevant as Magic Mike, except, they won't advertise it for gay guys.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 13, 2018 12:51 AM |
Can't wait for the porn version of this movie.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 13, 2018 3:10 PM |
I'm kind of amazed one of Tyler's movies gets a theater release and not a VOD.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 13, 2018 3:11 PM |
R61 Lol same. He hasn't had one in a while (unless you count Fifty Shades or EWS).
by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 13, 2018 3:13 PM |
Lol, I love how his fans have no faith in his career but love him anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 13, 2018 3:17 PM |
R63 Some of them do. They're expectations are set a little too high though.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 13, 2018 3:20 PM |
I wouldn't pay to watch this movie, there isn't anyhting particularly worth watching I'm friad, but I'm interested in how the movie will ignore any hints of homosexuality.

I like that he fully knows he's beefcake and uses that to his advantage.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | May 15, 2018 5:52 PM |
There was something so whorey about him in "Everybody wants Some!!" (where the gif is from at r689) that was really sexy. One thing I liked about that movie was that the actors were clearly on display for beefcake purposes. I am curious whether or not Richard Linklater is closeted, given how homoerotic the movie was.

Heck-lin
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 15, 2018 6:49 PM |
Obviously the movie relies heavily on display of the male body but there is nothing about it that's going to leave a lasting impression in one's mind. I also highly doubt people have ever heard about Weider. R67

Actually, kind of the opposite, R75. Before him, those "body culture" mags were all homoerotic. He took them mainstream.

Birth Name: Tyler Lee Hoechlin
Place of Birth: Corona, Riverside, California, United States
Date of Birth: September 11, 1987
Ethnicity: *German, Swiss-German (father) *English, German, Norwegian, Scottish, Irish (mother)
Tyler Hoechlin is an American actor and baseball player.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | May 17, 2018 1:29 AM |
He's a 9/11 birthday. Why did you post the rest of that info, R80?
by Anonymous | reply 81 | May 17, 2018 1:38 AM |
because r76 and r78 were discussing his ancestry. The answer is lots of German and no Native American.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | May 17, 2018 3:49 AM |
Höchlin then...
by Anonymous | reply 83 | May 17, 2018 3:51 AM |
For r57:
[quote]The inspirational tale of the grandfathers of fitness as we now know it, Joe and Ben Weider. Battling anti-Semitism and racism, as well as extreme poverty, the brothers beat all odds to build an empire and inspire future generations.
Tyler plays Joe Weider. Aneurin Bernard plays his brother Ben.

Tyler looked hotter when he was younger at R84.

r85 Yes...he did, didn't he, Rose?
by Anonymous | reply 86 | May 17, 2018 4:11 AM |

Oe = German ö.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | May 17, 2018 4:54 AM |
That's nice, r90. But what does it SOUND like?
by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 17, 2018 4:56 AM |
I think the sound exists in British English in words like "low" or "oh". R91
by Anonymous | reply 92 | May 17, 2018 5:04 AM |
So it's HOKE-lin, not HECK-lin?
by Anonymous | reply 93 | May 17, 2018 5:06 AM |
No, British English in words like "low" is a dyphthong that ends with a u; the first vowel in that dyphthong resembles German ö.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | May 17, 2018 5:27 AM |
But what does it SOUND like?

I don't care how Tyler pronounces it. He pronounces it wrong to make it more appealing as an actor. I want to know how it's supposed to be pronounced.

I have heard contradictory things about him, from homosexuality to homophobia, but still he built an empire exploiting the sexy bodies of men R79

[quote]I don't care how Tyler pronounces it. He pronounces it wrong to make it more appealing as an actor. I want to know how it's supposed to be pronounced.
He's of Swiss-German descent. In German the [oe] or umlaut o is an "eur" and the [ch] is a hard 'k.' However, Tyler chooses to pronounce the [oe] in the way the French [œ] is pronounced when followed by a consonant--an [é] sound. This reflects Tyler's Swiss-German as opposed to German patrimony.
Another example of this Francification of German surnames is French composer Charles Koechlin (Charl KEKlann), who was of part German ancestry.

In German you pronounce it as if it were "herklin" but with a British accent, dropping the r, and pronouncing the k as in Scottish "loch."
But some regions of Germany pronounce the oe like a regular e.

So, you people find Calum Von Moger gross?
by Anonymous | reply 111 | May 19, 2018 9:27 AM |
People who call him gross would faint if he suddenly appeared at their bedside. All that muscle is so magnificent and overwhelming. They would tremble with ecstasy.
Has anyone felt this kind of muscle? How cool and smooth it feels?

"Overwhelming" I'll buy. If I were to "tremble," however, it would be at the ostentation of it. "Ecstasy" would not happen. Not everyone is a Muscle Mary!, Mary!

Hoechlin looks pretty but has no actual presence or charisma at all. It's like with Henry Cavill who looks pretty but is a void when it comes to personality. To me that's because they obviously are hold back to keep everybody else at a distance. With Cavill it's because he's a closet case, what does Hoechlin have to hide?

I disagree with you on the charisma but lately he hasn't had a chance to show it. Although now i'm wondering what would have happened if he'd worked with Cavill on Stratton 😄
[Quote] With Cavill it's because he's a closet case, what does Hoechlin have to hide?
I don't think he has anything to hide. I think it's more to do with the fact that acting isn't his passion, it was baseball.
[Quote] To me that's because they obviously are HOLDING back (as in doing their best to be difficult to read through their body language) to keep everybody else at a distance.
I do agree with you on that. Which is weird because he's better with physicality than line delivery.

I hope they cover this part in the movie..............i met so many hot men through him................joe millionaire , rob sager, There were even allegations Weider “pimped” his athletes to closeted gay men—but it was all very “don’t ask, don’t tell.”................

[Quote] Co-Executive Producer Dan Solomon tells us the film is now complete. “Director George Gallo created something beautiful, an emotionally charged, multi-layered, period piece spanning all the decades of Joe’s life. Then don't do bodybuilding or don't look at those scantily clad muscle men. You can't expect a "sport" that revolves around sexy muscular men who flaunt their scantily clad bodies in a beauty contest not to be greatly homoerotic both implicitly and explicitly.
by Anonymous | reply 194 | June 11, 2018 7:03 PM |
R192..........and the reason its "BAD" is because all the dweebs, flamers hyjacked it and made it theirs. i remember coming to los angeles in the 80s, and so many hot , intelligent , beautiful men. the clubs never let the masses in..... being "GAY" was special.....well, i knew when the original abbey coffee cake restaurant opened and all the weird looking goth types took over , skinny , dark, ugly little dweebs lingering in corners, well, GAY changed to that and its never been the same............
by Anonymous | reply 195 | June 11, 2018 7:04 PM |
Bodybuilding is not gay. Gay love it cause they love a good muscular body (but not a steroid freak).
But it's not because gay men specially love it that bodybuilders themselves are gay. Some are, some are hetero.

R195 is one old, delusional faguette
by Anonymous | reply 197 | June 11, 2018 7:08 PM |
When people say bodybuilding is gay they are not necessarily saying bodybuilders are gay although a great number certainly are. What is being actually said is that it is inherently a homoerotic activity. They stand beautiful and ideally masculine in front of an audience that is mostly male and judges who are also men who rate them on their looks. As such, bodybuilders must flaunt their bodies and enchant the senses of the judges so as to make them give them the highest score. It is pretty much a battle of seduction.
I know bodybuilders from gay to hetero and it is not uncommon that many heterosexual bodybuidlers do enjoy male atention or gay attention. They may not be attracted to men, but that doesn't stop them from enjoying being some kind of sexual fantasy for other men. Some bodybuilders do know the power of body language coming from their bodies and are not shy to pose intentionally erotic just to have influence on a judge's scoring decision.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | June 12, 2018 7:44 AM |
Homo-erotic stuff is not gay stuff.
If you take painting, tons of homo-erotic stuff by your criteria but still in church. Appreciating the beauty of the human body (male or female) is not gay, it's normal stuff.
Saying that gay men appreciate it even more is just as saying water is wet.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | June 12, 2018 7:59 AM |
"Appreciating the beauty of the human body". Such bullshit.
If the people who come up with tha crap really appreciated the beauty of the human body they'd not be obsessed exclusively with muscles, sexy muscles of nerly naked men. No one buys that euphemistic crap. Muscles sell because they mean sex.
by Anonymous | reply 200 | June 12, 2018 10:07 AM |
Sure, the Vatican is selling sex with its porno ceilings of half naked men.
Your life must be sad if muscles only mean sex for you.

bodybuilding is a pond from which 'mentors' volunteer to 'sponsor' the hot young talent, even Arnold went thru such games....fish on queens.
by Anonymous | reply 202 | June 12, 2018 10:15 AM |
Do you know who painted the Vatican? Besides, in the bible nudity is stigmatised for its sexually arousing nature, but the Vatican isn't precisely about following the bible to the letter.
by Anonymous | reply 203 | June 12, 2018 10:15 AM |
Studies have shown men who weightlift and bodybuild tend to believe in more conventional, traditional gender roles. So many men into bodybuilding today are into being Alpha males and beasts. For a myriad of reasons, male homosexuals are still widely Viewed as effeminate or unmanly, and most openly gay men still display traits and mannerisms that are not considered masculine. Gay male culture, which celebrates drag queens and calling men female pronouns, is not known for its machismo or fostering of Alphas. Hence, most bodybuilders and Gym bros avoid explicitly gay identity and associations.
by Anonymous | reply 204 | June 12, 2018 10:16 AM |
R203 Yes I know who painted the Vatican but it was still a Vatican's order so I guess they did not really had a problem with it at the time. And the meaning of nudity than was not the same as today.
Then about nudity in the Bible, you compare things you can't compare. The early antiquity loved its muscular naked men (see Gilgamesh or even better David and Jonathan). Men in the Bible are often described as beautiful and strong.
Puritanism was born a long time after the Bible was written so don't project it on people who write the different texts which compose it hundreds and hundreds of years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 205 | June 12, 2018 10:27 AM |
As long as gay men are linked with effeminacy, most men will not want to be associated with gay stuff, especially men who exalt conventional masculinity, such as bodybuilders and aesthetics bros.
by Anonymous | reply 206 | June 12, 2018 10:33 AM |
Do you really think the Vatican has ever been a moral institution? All the paintings in the Vatican are simply ostentation, nothing to do with christian belief and I repeat, the bible speaks clearly against nudity. You're conflating Hebrew culture and Mesopotamian culture; not the same R205
And muscles have always been a sign of sexual maturity and availbility, that's why there is a close connection between muscularity and sex drive.
by Anonymous | reply 207 | June 12, 2018 10:36 AM |
Early Hebrew culture is part of the Mesopotamian culture.
Tons of stories in the bible are a complete copy and paste of this culture. Hebrew culture evolved later in something different and early Mesopotamian cultures died.
Seeing someone nude is a metaphor for sex in the Bible, but this metaphor doesn't mean nudity was always bad. Adam and Eve were naked and happy before they bite the apple, so nudity itself was not the problem. Sex was.
Anyway, I don't get why we're speaking Theology and nudity on DL, weird.
by Anonymous | reply 208 | June 12, 2018 10:46 AM |
Hebrews had a negative view on nudity and the bible is very specific about covering your body decently so as not to entince anybody sexually. It starts with Genesis when after eating from the tree of knowledge Adam and Eve felt shame of their naked bodies.
Mesopotamians had a different view son these topics, even homosexuality wasn't really that much of an issue.
by Anonymous | reply 209 | June 12, 2018 11:19 AM |
Every culture ask people to be decent, the criteria of restraint change with cultures.
As for homosexuality, David and Jonathan were clearly described as close and even as a couple if you believe someone like Thomas Romer. There again, hard to know how close they were as "homosexuality" is a modern idea and strong friendship between men was quite the "norm" at the time.
by Anonymous | reply 210 | June 12, 2018 11:31 AM |
The bible was written by many unknown different authors through time, of course, there were differences in some premises that show contradictions, but the general view on nudity was negative and the same about sex. Hebrews wanted to reject the views and practices of the surrounded cultures that they viewed as idolatry and indecency.

"Sexy bodies for the Lord" I approve.
But it depends how you read the Bible.
For some it's the temple of the soul (very new-age thinking) so it's logical to take care of it, others think it's a prison and must be punished because body= desire=sex.

Some gay men do follow female beauty contests but they hardly obsess over contestants and their bodies. "Heterosexual" fans of bodybuilding obsess over the body parts of bodybuilders, they scream in total ecstasy when male bodybuilders flaunt their muscles on stage. Even more they demand the sexy cocky attitude from the bodybuildr when flexing.

[Quote] On October 12th, the motion picture BIGGER lands in theaters as the largest-budgeted bodybuilding themed production of all time. In the weeks leading up to the release, DigitalMuscle presents this exclusive series taking you inside this remarkable project. Turning the improbable story of Joe Weider into a scripted, feature film, had its share of challenges. Among the most daunting tasks would be identifying an actor with the chops to play the lead character, a notoriously complex visionary whose story begins in 1920’s Montreal beneath the fog of poverty, antisemitism, and a mother who struggled to love him. Hollywood insiders questioned whether producers of BIGGER would be able to secure a leading man with the transformative range to deliver on all the peculiarities, emotion, and marginal eccentricities of a man whose crusade was as unique as the accent in which he spoke. Weider died in 2013 at 93 years old. After an exhaustive process to identify the perfect Joe, Producers Steve Lee Jones, Scott LaStaiti and Camila Castro struck gold when they landed Tyler Hoechlin to play the part. “Tyler has that rare combo of athleticism, good looks and smarts that has mega-stardom written all over him.” Jones explains, “He’s a former athlete with a fire in his belly and it beams from his eyes, a perfect, relentless Joe Weider.” In the film, the older Joe is played by Academy Award Nominated actor Robert Forster. When Hoechlin (pronounced Hecklin) was just 13 he earned praise as the central character with Tom Hanks in ROAD TO PERDITION, a film that also featured Paul Newman in his final role. The former college baseball player would later star in the TEEN WOLF series before scoring the coveted role of Superman in the popular SUPERGIRL series. Critics called him the second best Superman they’d ever seen. Beneath his superhero good looks, Hoechlin is a professional in every sense of the word, poised to take full advantage of the kind of circuitous role that scores Oscar nominations for actors of his ability. When I arrived on set for the first day of shooting I was quickly taken aback by the 30 year old’s understanding of his subject. A relative outsider to the bodybuilding world, Hoechlin was a remarkably quick study, grasping the nuances of the man who turned a 15 cent newsletter and a relative pipe-dream into a billion dollar industry. Among the more obvious challenges would be re-creating Joe’s often imitated speaking voice, a unique blend of Polish and French Canadian that gave way to a sound that still baffles even the most skilled dialect experts. Unfazed by the task, Hoechlin nailed it. Executive Producer Eric Weider, the nephew of Joe, has been impressed by Hoechlin’s portrayal of his iconic uncle. “Tyler did a fantastic job capturing the essence of Joe, his determination, and his relentless pursuit of his vision.” Eric’s father Ben (Joe’s younger brother) is portrayed in the film by talented Welsh actor Aneurin Barnard who recently earned praise for his role in the big budget action-thriller DUNKIRK. Julianne Hough plays the iconic pin-up model Betty Brosmer who would go on to marry Joe in 1961. Tom Arnold, Victoria Justice, Kevin Durand, Colton Haynes, Nadine Lewington and Steve Guttenberg round out a cast for a story that spans 8 decades. While most actors tend to concern themselves only with the merits of their own performance, Hoechlin’s dedication to this film was far broader. During most days on set the California native was spotted huddling with Director George Gallo, examining the authenticity and period-relevance of each moment, while exploring opportunities for the next scene and for his fellow cast members. It’s easy to observe that Hoechlin may someday add Director to his resumé, but for now it’s clear that the film’s leading man is well on his way to becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest attractions….and Joe Weider wouldn’t have had it any other way.
I can't wait to hear his accent.

It is difficult to imagine that this can have a meaningful message to send. You can't even make this movie an international sensation because 1. most hetrosexual men are not interested in men showing off their bodies and 2. bodybuilding has risen in popularity but it is still a niche interest on a worldwide scale. R294
I would be interested in seeing if the movie is going to cover Weider's exploitation of the muscular male physique as an object of desire of gay desire (and the money that came with it) as the article above suggests or if this part of the whole picture will be ignored. I bet we won't see any of that; it would ruin the reputation of the movie and bodybuilding. It would make fans of bodybuilding feel questioned in their sexuality for their peculiar interest (almost obsession) with these men's sexy bodies. It wouldn't sell well.
Imagine a movie about Eugene Sandow-father of modern bodybuilding- ignoring his well known bisexuality.

[Quote] It’s appropriate that Bigger, the biopic on body-building pioneers Joe and Ben Weider, begins in Montreal. Much of their story is presented in the prosaic, sepia-toned expositional format we expect from Canadian TV’s Heritage Minutes. It’s the kind of story that’s almost criminal to film badly. Joe (Tyler Hoechlin) followed a lifelong obsession with drawing the male human form (dismissed in the ‘40s as appealing to homosexuals), and created a bodybuilder’s magazine empire that had an aesthetic that went beyond the mere depiction of strongmen.

[Quote] Director George Gallo, taking a cue from his 1991 film, “29th Street,” romanticizes everything in a nostalgic glow, but without a sturdier script featuring fully dimensional characters at his disposal, the performances prove to be as unconvincing as their ethnic accents and period wigs. The lone exception is provided by Austrian bodybuilder-actor Calum Von Moger, whose playful, dead-ringer impersonation of a baby-faced Ah-nuld gives the film what all those tired clichés can’t — a beating pulse.

[Quote] “Bigger” portrays the bodybuilding field as pretty steadfast, if not wholly thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Some characters are repelled by Weider’s fascination with male physique, thinking him gay. He is not, not that there would have been anything wrong with that, and the movie skates over the homoerotic side of the culture entirely. Steroids and prior performance-boosters don’t get any mention either.

So sick and tired of the self-serving, warped view that "all bodybuilders are gay" and "all bodybuilding is homoerotic to everyone."
You can appreciate a beautiful thing, like a parrot or a dining table or a woman, without wanting to fuck it. And most men who lift weights want to be more powerful than the average man and appealing to the opposite sex.
Most men aren't gay or bisexual. Science has proven that; so have the many bodybuilders in the fitness industry who don't blow other dudes for fun.
You delusional queens just need to accept it.
Weider and Schwarzenegger aren't gay. Not everyone is like yourself or motivated by the same things.

Why is mentioning bodybuilding is homoerotic such a bad thing?q It is homoerotic, why should people stay silent about it especially considering this standard of male beauty is the product of homosexual minds? by Anonymous | reply 357 | November 25, 2018 2:12 PM |
That quote is wrong though. Homosexual men of ancient Greece were the architects of muscle. Weider took it and capitalised on it to build and empire but bodybuildig from its very roots is a homosexual contribution.

Do bodybuilding fans really believe heterosexual men set the pattern of what is the ideal male form? It was us, homosexual men; not them. It is incongruent to think heterosexual men would be so obsessed with other men's bodies.
There is so much history revisionism in bodybuilding, pretty much in the same way Judeo-christianity claims to own marriage when actually marriage predates every relgion in the world and same-sex marriages did occur in ancient times.
by Anonymous | reply 369 | December 1, 2018 8:45 AM |
Ancient Greek gym culture is of special interest to us because homosexuality was as much a part of it then as it is today. Likewise, when we speak of the Greek ideal, the propagation of the ideal and homosexuality are inseparable and historically well documented albeit barely explored.

[quote]So, straight men obsess with these scantily clad men and their oiled muscular bodies...
It is a natural instinct for males to pursue power. Men can admire physical power without being sexually aroused by it. Women can pore over glamor magazines all day long without wanting to have sex with the female models. Just because things attract our attention doesn't mean we view them as objects of our own sexual desire.
by Anonymous | reply 376 | December 11, 2018 3:18 PM |
One thing is admire and another thing is obsess with these men and scream like fangirls at every sexy pose these men strike on stage. Come on, let's not play games, bodybuilding is literally a mild form of male striptease.
And these men are at their weakest on stage so not really that much strength.

This didn't turn out to be the gay pron fantasia that so many DL-ers hoped it would be but it's all right. There are some great physiques in it and there are moments when the story itself is inspiring. Mostly it's a dull screenplay with 2-D characters but the actors are okay. They needed to do a sexier version of this, it was very timid and pretending to be a crusade against anti-semitism mostly, rather than an opportunity to goggle hot bods. Not a complete waste of time but close.
by Anonymous | reply 395 | January 15, 2019 11:19 PM |
No one was expecting any gay porn fantasy. Modern bodybuilding is tightly bound to gay men. From the very beginning Weider knew gay men were attracted to men wh sexy muscular bodies so he sold male bodybuilders a sex symbols to appeal to gay men. That is how really modern bodybuilding took off. The movie omits this relevant part in the history of modern bodybuilding to favour a revised version.
Even more, men who loved men created bodybuilding. Gay men were not the spectators but the performers.

The movie isn't great, but a good primer for bodybuilding enthusiasts.
It had some overwrought moments -- Kevin Durand as Bill Hauk was just way over-the-top, scowling at every flex of Arnold's bicep or beating down Weider's admirers right in front of cops, just in time to get arrested outside the Weiders' dinner table. I'd also argue it wasn't entertaining enough, but it's interesting to know the sour grapes and bigotry opposing Weider as he came up.
