Julianne Hough plays the iconic pin-up model Betty Brosmer who would go on to marry Joe in 1961. This didn't turn out to be the gay pron fantasia that so many DL-ers hoped it would be but it's all right. There are some great physiques in it and there are moments when the story itself is inspiring. Mostly it's a dull screenplay with 2-D characters but the actors are okay. They needed to do a sexier version of this, it was very timid and pretending to be a crusade against anti-semitism mostly, rather than an opportunity to goggle hot bods. Not a complete waste of time but close.

No one was expecting any gay porn fantasy. Modern bodybuilding is tightly bound to gay men. From the very beginning Weider knew gay men were attracted to men wh sexy muscular bodies so he sold male bodybuilders a sex symbols to appeal to gay men. That is how really modern bodybuilding took off. The movie omits this relevant part in the history of modern bodybuilding to favour a revised version.

Even more, men who loved men created bodybuilding. Gay men were not the spectators but the performers.

The movie isn't great, but a good primer for bodybuilding enthusiasts.

It had some overwrought moments -- Kevin Durand as Bill Hauk was just way over-the-top, scowling at every flex of Arnold's bicep or beating down Weider's admirers right in front of cops, just in time to get arrested outside the Weiders' dinner table. I'd also argue it wasn't entertaining enough, but it's interesting to know the sour grapes and bigotry opposing Weider as he came up.
