Lots of people who live in urban areas, in apartment buildings etc, are not able to barbecue anywhere other than in a park. Many parks do allow barbecues and picnics, they do have designated areas for such activities. That's what some of our tax dollars are for.

California has lost as much as 91 percent of its original wetlands, mostly to agriculture. It has the worst air quality in the us. Conservation isn't just about acrage, but function and value. Wetlands for example have a much larger impact on the overall health if an ecosystem. Say what you want about the southeast but Georgia for example has more salt marsh then the rest of the eastern us state combined. Only three of Georgia's 9 barrior islands are developed. In a state with a small coastline Georgia has one of the largest Marine sanctuaries (deepwater reef) on the east coast as well.

The starfish die off, sea otter die off, beach closings, severtiy of wildfires, flooding, mudslides etc. are a product of overdevelopment and nonpoint source pollution.

California may lead the nation in recycling, renewable energy etc, but they have already decimated much of the high value habitat they used to have.
