I hate when Broadway singers add pop songs to their repertoire. I don't want to hear you sing Get Here, Patti LuPone. The only exception I can think off is Gavin Creel. He sings pop well.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 12, 2018 1:41 AM |
I'm not a huge fan of his singing, although I will acknowledge he can somewhat carry a tune. And I do think he's sexy. However, his singing in the advert above just sounded OK, not spectacular. I feel like his singing is on par with a pretty good amateur, but no better, and certainly not at a star level. Isn't Lincoln Center a major show venue where really well-known, great singers perform? Is he really of that caliber to have an entire show based on his singing at that major of a venue? Does he really have that big of a fan base? I could see him maybe being part of an ensemble that performs there and having one solo song, but I don't really consider him as being famous enough or talented enough to warrant such a production that showcases his talent alone.

Are there not any better male Broadway stars they could have gotten? I agree that he is not a great singer.
Give me Aaron Tveit!

Aaron Tveit is more talented and has a better voice, but he's not as funny nor as charming as Rannells.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 12, 2018 2:10 AM |
I have all the same questions and opinions that r31 has.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 12, 2018 2:16 AM |
That was NOT good. How did he even land that gig?
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 12, 2018 2:37 AM |
R31 here, I wasn't asking any of those questions rhetorically. I am legitimately asking if anyone knows, or has any idea even, why there's a show centered around him. I know he did Book of Mormon and was highly regarded in that, but that was, what......ten years ago? And Broadway is niche-y, the vast majority of Americans don't go to broadway shows or follow the goings on of Broadway musicals. I actually like musical theater and I don't even follow it. So I wouldn't really consider anyone whose sole credit is Broadway theater as having wide-spread fame, save for those select few, e.g. Angela Lansbury. I never watched Girls so I don't know if he was a major character in that and maybe that gave him some further stardom. But again, Girls on a while ago, and I don't know anyone who actually watched it. I am seriously surprised the powers that be would consider Rannells worthy of this treatment, especially given that his singing is, again, very niche-y. I don't agree with the others on this thread who say he's awful. But it certainly isn't at a caliber of a highly trained vocalist. When I think of Lincoln Center, I think of the likes of Renee Fleming, Audra McDonald, Sam Ramey, Sarah Brightman, hell, even Lady Gaga seems more Lincoln Center-worthy. But not some aging once-upon-a-time twinkie who, really, just isn't talented in the singing department. Is he really famous and I just totally missed it? Or maybe a Lincoln Center performance isn't as big of a deal as I think it is?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 12, 2018 2:49 AM |
No, he's not really famous and you missed it, r43. I would say he's well-known to a certain niche audience but most people have no clue who TF he is. I'm also perplexed as to how he rated a solo Lincoln Center show and a PBS special. He really isn't a "name" in the Industry to warrant such a thing.

by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 12, 2018 3:51 AM |
r45, do you mean his cock is huge, his ass, or his career?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 12, 2018 3:57 AM |
Looks like I missed this. Wonder if they will re run it. His promo made him look up some old Gilbert O'Sullivan songs on spotify.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 12, 2018 4:01 AM |
He's very charming but his singing was all over the place. I blame the music director/accompanist for not placing the songs in better keys and for not picking better pieces. I really loved the Into The Woods medley, but hated Jacky - that was just dreadful! And he commented on how quirky the song is, which was just even more dreadful. Broadway singers can sing pop songs if they're done Glee like but rock songs? I don't know.... it takes a special performer to pull that off. I think Jeremy Jordon would be a good pick for Live from Lincoln Center.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 12, 2018 4:18 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 12, 2018 4:23 AM |
How did he get a full special when Jonathan Groff was relegated to trotting around in tap shoes like a lovesick child just for Sutton Foster's amusement?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 12, 2018 4:28 AM |
R50, pretty sure the keys were set well in advance of the performance. If they weren't proper, they would have known well before. So they were likely the keys that (he feels) suited his talents.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 12, 2018 4:45 AM |
In case you missed it, this was the fourth (and last) in a series: Sutton Foster (with Groff), Leslie Odom, Jr., Stephanie J. Block, and Andy.

Andrew Rannells Live From Lincoln Center is a LIE!!! He's not at Lincoln Center, he's at the Time Warner building. It should be Live From Columbus Circle. And technically, he's not LIVE. He's pre-recorded.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 12, 2018 5:25 AM |
The Columbus Circle venue is called Jazz at Lincoln Center.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 12, 2018 11:35 AM |
That promo is painful. You can tell Andrew has gotta really police his diet or his face is fat city. He’s definitely pudge and bloated in that clip. He’s tall, but even that isn’t doing him any favors.

R52, lovesick puppy. Let laying dogs lie.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | May 12, 2018 12:08 PM |
What is the story with Mike Doyle, R36? He and Andrew broke up a year or so ago and Doyle does seem a little lost now (based on his social media) but not "insane" as you claim.
Doyle doesn't seem to be working at all though so that can't be good. And he no longer travels in Andrew's more elevated professional circles.
Maybe the career competition, which Andrew is certainly winning, doomed their relationship.

Gavn Creel would have been a much better option. He sings like a dream and he could do his own pop material - he has some pretty ballads - in between the show tunes. Songs from HAIR, where he was one of the leads, would bridge the Broadway/Pop gap. But I guess he has no Q rating or whatever.
I agree that Jeremy Jordan would have been better as well, though I wouldn't want to hear him doing old school diva numbers, as he sometimes does.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 12, 2018 12:47 PM |
Gavin creel would be amazing. BEAUTIFUL voice. This guy is terrible. He sings like an amatuer kid in middle school. Horrible. Just horrible. I don't know him. Saw him in falsettos and he was supposed to be goodlooking or something. I bet he is part asian. He looks like caroline rhea too. Just gay and bad. Sorry.

You queens are too critical. How many of you can carry a tune? He was fine. Andrew Rannells is charming and cute.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 12, 2018 1:25 PM |
Book of Mormon was a huge hit. He got a Ryan Murpht show, which flopped. And he got onto a hit, Girls. He hasn't been a runaway success onscreen or anything.
It is quite odd that Groff isn't one of the headliners. The network would have loved a Lin Manuel duet.

by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 12, 2018 1:28 PM |
I found his nasal singing style - the Adam Pascal approach to singing - irritating from the very beginning.
Having said that, I thought his version of "It Must Be Him" was campy enough to be enjoyable, and "Praying for Time" was subdued enough to work.
Nonetheless, whenever I see him it reminds me of the semi-boner he seemed to have during the Tony Awards.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | May 12, 2018 1:38 PM |
That is weird. The promo looks like a joke. Is it a joke? Does PBS know how to joke?
by Anonymous | reply 71 | May 12, 2018 1:41 PM |

[quote]The Columbus Circle venue is called Jazz at Lincoln Center.
I call my apartment Sandringham House, but that doesn't make it so. I know that's what they call the venue, but it's not *at* Lincoln Center. It's six blocks south of Lincoln Center.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 12, 2018 2:02 PM |
I meant insane in that he had a relationship with Rannells. Not that he himself is insane.
You know people who fall for someone nobody else has a clue why. Especially when Doyle won the looks and talent lottery. Rannells was always very strange looking, smug and annoying.
I saw Doyle in Burning Blue and he was good. If he hadn't been openly gay from the beginning he would have had at least TV casting directors banging on his door for major pilots.
He would have had many more chances for high visibility roles. Just do what other people even today. You establish a solid career and then come out. Just like everyone else who succeeds big time as an actor.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | May 12, 2018 2:39 PM |
Doyle is good looking but he's very short, I doubt taller than 5'6. Andrew towered over him. His height definitely had an effect on his career prospects.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | May 12, 2018 3:29 PM |
But aren't actors often shorter than you think with a bit of a large head? It seems common. I think.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | May 12, 2018 3:34 PM |
It wasnt his height.
It was something far more SINISTER!
by Anonymous | reply 77 | May 12, 2018 3:40 PM |
Mike Doyle's social media desperately presents him with minor celebrities like Christine Baranski, Patty Clarkson and Mariska Hargitay's husband. I'm sure he misses the A gay swirl that Rannells is accustomed to.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | May 12, 2018 3:47 PM |

It's in his contract that he has to say that. He doesn't really mean it.
Everytime they interview someone on PBS, they say that. I found it a bit difficult to believe Maggie Smith when she was raving how wonderful PBS was. When you've seen that Judy Collins "special" for the 500th time, you know Mags doesn't have much experience with PBS.

Rannells is more famous than Jeremy Jordan or Gavin Creel. But I agree he is one fajita away from looking like Amy Schumer.

I liked it overall. I find him charming and the song selection was interesting. However, running his hand through his hair constantly was annoying, and it was tacky of him not to introduce the band. He was cute scolding the picture snapper, though.
Born to Run is a great song, but I don’t think Andrew will ever be considered a great Springsteen interpreter. I also don’t think Big Time was a good way to end. But I am glad he didn’t just sing all his big numbers.
