Poor Elizabeth Hartman. Tragic life. Went out a window on the Fifth Floor

A lot of it was filmed in the MacArthur Park region in LA. I think that's the park where they meet up.

I always got Elizabeth Hartman mixed up with Sandy Dennis.

You can see some of old LA in this clip.
And wow - kids skateboarding in 1965!

Shelley devoured the scenery in this film like it was covered in ranch dressing.

SLEEEEENA!

I think of this film everytime I drink pineapple juice. And Shelley almost ruined it for me with her hammy overacting but luckily Hartman, Poitier and Wallace Ford (in his last film role) saved the film with their wonderful and much more subtle performances.

R11 = Peggy Wood!

That won her an ACADEMY AWARD. When it mattered.

Shelley's shrieking harpy act worked great in comedies and disaster films, but felt out of place in movies like this one. She needed strong directors like George Stevens to rein her in and get more balanced dramatic performances out of her and Guy Green obviously wasn't able to do that.
And speaking of Peggy Wood - I'd give her 1965 BSA Oscar in a heartbeat, but only if she did her own singing in the "Climb Every Mountain Scene". Lip-syncing to someone else's voice always cheapens the movie performance in my eyes a bit.

She was dubbed r14
Shelley played a prostitute in Patch of Blue? I don't remember that.

R15, she was sort of a part time prostitute but she and her fat bitch friend were going to start a whorehouse at the end of the movie and bring Selena along and force her into prostitution.
I thought the worst part of the movie was where Shelley had to say the n word and for some reason, you can see she doesn't want to do it. In Cleopatra Jones, she says it with glee.

I read the book when I was very young and it made an impact on me, so I had mixed feelings about wanting to watch the movie when it came on television. It did not disappoint though. Very good adaptation.
For me it was a very moving story and the way it was cast and filmed was well done.

R17, how did the book end. I've read that the semi-happy ending in the movie was a change from the not happy ending in the book but I haven't been able to find out what it was, even through Google.
