Color Film Noir

It's so surreal watching film noir shot in color. The one film genre that was meant to be in black and white, and yet some of the color ones are among the greatest...

Glad you started this thread, OP. Here's a handy list to get the discussion going.

Which are your favorites? Others to add to the list?

Which have been immaculately restored for Blu-Ray with extra goodies?

NIAGARA is worth seeing just for the gorgeous Richard Allan:

r1 There's also a list on imdb, but they have DIAL M FOR MURDER, JOHNNY GUITAR and REAR WINDOW as film noir, which I'm not sure is true. The one I would definitely recommend is DESERT FURY with Burt Lancaster. It's beautifully shot in Technicolor by Charles Lang and has John Hodiak and Wendell Corey as a gay couple.

OP, the second I read the title of the thread, before I saw the pic, I thought of that picture.

The first time I saw it it was quite bizarre, seeing all this evil, noir plot playing out in bright daylight in Technicolor.

All of the modern neo noir films of the late-70s through to the 90s are in color, but it's not the same, is it? There's something about the richness of Technicolor that makes it closer to black and white. It's almost hyper-real. More dramatic.

Another shot from DESERT FURY. Apparently, there's a campaign underway to have it restored and released on blu ray...

The Champion is "Farewell My Lovely" with Robert Mitchum. Marlowe was the role that Mitchum was born to play. Unlike the noirs of old, this film shows the grittiness, sleaze and grim of LA in a realistic way. It is not antiseptic like the noirs of the past and that gives it a nice little edge. Watching his film can really explain what the term gumshoe detective meant.

Wouldn't "Dial M for Murder" be such a movie, the Wikipedia article doesn't list it.

r9 This imdb list includes it, along with REAR WINDOW.
