Inspired by the (odious) Jon Hamm thread... what do we know about it? Always the same venue? How big is it? Who goes other than cast, crew and guest star and their guests? Do crew even get to go? Has anyone been murdered at it? Is it true Andy Cohen can't get invited? (I made that up but it's a nice idea.). Anyone?
The SNL after party

If Andy Cohen had ever gone - or even been invited to go - he’d mention it all the time on Watch What Happens Live.

I worry about the introverts who are forced to party after the live show when they just want to go to bed.

Oooh the tea.

The venue changes regularly if not every week. That’s all I know about it.

I read somewhere that at each party there are two rooms set up. One room is for Lorne, repertory players, the host, and special guests and the other room is for featured players and other SNL employees.

R6 How elitist of them. Why not just have everyone party together? They all work together. Rather it's in front of the camera or behind.
That's probably Lorne Michaels doing.

R7 the first room is probably where they keep all the good drugs.

Has there ever been a takedown tell all about Lorne Michaels? You have to assume he's not the nicest guy.

And he's tried many many times.

Years ago on Marc Maron's WTF podcast, Michaela Waktins talked about the SNL after parties. She said repertory players and featured players are picked up by town cars and taken to venue. IIRC, it was Michaela's first show and she rode with Jason Sudeikis to the after party and then mistakenly thought they she could sit with him. At the party, it was revealed to her that they have a certain seating chart in which Lorne, the top producers, host, special guests, and repertory players sit in a circle and then in the next circle is featured players and other guests.

^ sounds more like a cult than a party!

I wonder which hosts bailed and just went back to their hotel.

OP/R1/R10, why do you think Andy Cohen can't get invited to a SNL after party? Of course he has been to them!
He was also invited to the exclusive SNL 40th Anniversary party in 2015. He wrote about it in his book. Click on the link and scroll down to the bottom of page 142 (Sunday, February 15, 2015).
According to his book, he is good friends with Marci Klein ( a former longtime SNL producer) and Jimmy Fallon and he mentions routine visits to their homes. When Andy's pal, Bruce Bozzi, appeared on The Tonight Show Bozzi mentioned that he and Jimmy first met when Jimmy first started on SNL because Jimmy was renting an apartment in a building that housed Bozzi's restaurant. So Andy probably has known Jimmy for a long time, too. When Jimmy was on WWHL one time, Andy mentioned that Marci was in the audience and talked about how the three of them would hang out together.
So Andy has no problem getting in to SNL events. He also frequently has SNLers as guests on his show. On the other hand, I do remember reading in one of his books that he couldn't score an invite to the Vanity Fair Oscars Party.

A 2014 NY Times article about the SNL after parties:
The show’s cast members each sat at specially assigned, high-backed booths with their guests, while feature players were at A-minus tables throughout three downstairs rooms. Perhaps most surprising of all, the food and beverages were not free, even for the cast. (Mr. Lovitz, when told of this, took a long pause. “Oh,” he said finally, as though suddenly wondering if he had been walking out on checks in nice restaurants from 1985 to 1990.)

OP. what you got against the gorgeous Jon Hamm? I love him.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 7, 2018 2:00 AM |
R9, no, just books about the show itself in which he comes out looking difficult.

It sounds fucking awful. You have to pay for your own food and drink. Obviously Lorne gets the shits if you don’t attend.

R18 maybe some people would go overboard if they knew they didn't have to pay for themselves and their guests.

Last night was the season finale. I've heard that the season finale parities are held outdoors at the 30 Rock rink.

Lorne Michaels is richer than God and he makes people pay for their own food and drink? What a cheap stingy bastard.
