The Witches (1990) with Anjelica Huston
I just watched The Witches again am still blown away by Anjelica Huston's performance as the Grand High Witch. She deserved an Oscar due to her ability to portray a totally different character with Eva Ernst vs. the Grand High Witch. There is a perfect balance of horror, thrill, campness, and grotesqueness. Glenn Close is the only other person who I can think of that would come close to pulling this off, and even then I do not think she would be able to portray two different persona so antithetically.
There has been talk of a remake since around 2008 with Guillermo del Toro doing a stop motion film. However, I don't see why Anjelica Huston cannot reprise her role as the Grand High Witch in full makeup for a sequel. It could be much more darker like the Suspiria remake and focus entirely on the witches instead of the children and mice.

There wasn’t talk about stop motion. It was live action. There’s a stop motion Addams Family coming. You’re confused. And yes, she and it, The Witches, is brilliant. Needs a Blu-ray release!!

She's fabulous in that movie, even Mai Zetterling the grandma. I was obsessed with that film as a kid and their accents and lines are hilarious.
I'm glad the endings happier than the book's though the author was furious.

Love this movie. And my dad loved this movie and it was not his genre at all. He also loved the Grifters. And me too.

Have you seen Anjelica lately? If they do a remake she'll need no makeup whatsoever.

Have you seen her work in Transparent? That acting muscle is gone, gone, gone. It was quite shocking to see, actually.

This contains a SPOILER do read no further if haven't seen the movie and want to someday.
I liked the movie, but I thought Houston was rather miscast. The Grand High Witch in the book was a much different physical type, a pixie-like witch; "tiny, probably no more than four and a half feet tall." She was also described as looking "quite young, I guessed about twenty-five or six, and she was very pretty." Anjelica Houston was neither young nor pretty. I think a different type of actress would have been more suited to the role.
I too was disappointed in the hackneyed ending. A statement is made with the original ending, in which The Boy (he never has a name) remains a mouse forever. The Grandmother asks him "My darling, are you sure you don't mind being a mouse for the rest of your life?" And he says "I don't mind at all. It doesn't matter who you are or what you look like as long as somebody loves you." The end of the book has the two of them planning to rid the world of all the witches in existence and they're both beside themselves with excitement. It's a very positive ending.

R9, well the film version changed the ending to a happy one that differs from the book. In the film, Luke gets turned back into a human from a mouse. Since the film version has already changed something, why not change another thing? When the Grand High Witch is "killed" by Mr. Stringer (Rowan Atkinson), we see the green smoke escape. This could very well be her essence that is escaping into the air to find a new host body. Or another witch could use a spell to bring her back to life or something.
As another posted already said, VITCHES. VORK. ONLY. VITH. MAH-GICK!!!!!!

Anyone ever figure out why she grabbed the spoon at the end of the movie? "Gimme that spoon!"

I think that her being so intensely involved in the Hollywood Coven, and serving so many years as the GHW there, made it hilarious that she did this role. Talk about hiding in plain sight. I heard she did go after a couple of the bit actresses who didn't show her proper respect, and they just "disappeared." I'm surprised she wears all that age makeup nowadays to hide how good she really looks, too. I guess it's part of the coverup.
